Let ’s make up our own minds
My wife and I were raised in different cultures. Linda grew up in the deep south in Alabama, while I spent my childhood in northern Ontario, Canada.
Shortly after we were married, we found ourselves hanging out through a supermarket. Linda asked me what I would like to have for dinner. I suggested turnip. As I picked one up and put it in our basket, she said: “What are you going to do with that?”
I replied: “I’m going to eat it.”
“Well, I’m not going to eat that.”
“Why not?” I thought you liked turnips?” I asked.
“I do, but I wouldn ’t eat that. It ’s the root (根) of the turnip … We feed that to the pigs.”
You know, as strange as this may seem, I had never heard it referred to as the root of the turnip! It was always just a turnip to me.
“Well, what do you eat?” I asked.
“We eat the green of the turnip.”
“Isn ’t that strange, we feed the greens to the pigs.”
I have never eaten turnip greens. I put the turnip back and we went on our way. But I began wondering how far back I would have to go into our family history to find out who made the decision that we would eat the root of a turnip and feed the green to the pigs. Or how far back I

Passage 2
Make schools a quieter place
If you want to learn anything at school, you need to listen to your teachers. But millions of kids don ’t hear what their teachers are saying. And it ’s not because these students are absent-minded. Often, it ’s the room ’s fault (问题). Some school buildings are built in the wrong place or in the wrong way. So the classrooms are echo-filled (充满回声的) and this makes hearing difficult.
In recent years, scientists who study sound have been trying to cut out background noise in schools. Background noise may include loud air-conditioners and outdoor noises, such as highway traffic.
Experts at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association say that the background noise in classrooms shouldn ’t be higher than 35 decibels (分贝). That ’s about as loud as a whispering (耳语) voice about four to five meters away. Many classrooms are much louder than that, and, many schools don ’t have the money to correct the problem. Fortunately, a growing number of schools have started to pay attention.
For example, some schools are changing their old classrooms to make them quieter. When they build new schools, they use noise-cutting technology (技术).
Helps learning
Cutting down noise is important. Why? Because quieter classrooms might make you smarter by letting you hear your lessons better.
Children with hearing problems suffer most from noisy classrooms, studies show. They sometimes can ’t here other students in class. Compared with kids with healthy hearing, they have a harder time picking up new vocabulary words in talks.
Tests also shows that kids with hearing problems have more trouble learning to read than kids who can hear well. They also have a harder time doing well in social (社会的) situations. And background noise makes it even harder for them to hear what ’s going on.

The others denied it as well. Of course, we all knew that one of us must have done it. But as the youngest and smallest of the three, I just couldn ’t find the courage to tell the truth.
To find out who had written on the step, father gave us each a piece of paper and a pencil. “I want each of you to write exactly what you see on the step.”
I tried my best to write the words differently. I didn ’t want dad to be able to tell it was me.
He gathered up our piece of paper and looked at them. “Since none of you will a dmit (承认) to have done it, then I will punish you all.” I stood there and said nothing. The last thing I wanted was for Dad to punish me!
“I did it.” My sister stepped forward and said she had done something she hadn ’t. She was grounded (受处罚) for a month.

US kids help out and make friends as well
For some US college students, a break from school is a time to volunteer to help communities in need. They take school sponsored (赞助) trips to do volunteer work.
This spring break, I had the opportunity to go on one of these trips, and it was the best week of my entire life. I went with 12 other students and two chaperones (陪伴者) down to Rocky Mount. North Carolina in the US. We worked on three houses, building roofs (屋顶), painting, landscaping (造园林), and shingling (盖瓦).
It was very rewarding to see how much we were truly appreciated by the people living in that town. Every time we went out somewhere for dinner, we had people come up to us to express their appreciation. This made us feel really good and motivated (鼓励) us to get more done each day. The trip wasn ’t all about work, however; we had an amazing group of people who enjoyed one another ’s company.
We created our own fun; this helped us get to know each other well. By the end of the trip, I

Passage 6
阅读下面短文, 简要回答文后问题。
Health watchers say that in many countries people will get taller. We will also get heavier. This is because we’re eating more junk food and exercising less. However, we may not have to eat in the future. Scientists are trying to find a new way to help us. Just wait!
Where to work In 20 to 30 year s’ time, only 20% of people will work in an office and more of us will work at home. But that doesn ’t mean we ’ll be able to watch TV all day. With videophones and web-cameras, the manager will be able to keep in touch with us and see exactly what we ’re doing.
Online all the time Before long, we ’ll all be on the Internet all the time. Everything will have inventions that connect us to the Internet. For example, with very small cameras in your sunglasses, you can take a picture and send it to your friend.
Modern homes By the 2030s, most homes will be fully “modern ”. The computer can help us do lots of things just when we make a phone call at home. Scanners (扫描仪) in your fridge will read the bar codes (条形码) on food bags, and then tell you when the food goes bad. What ’s more, your fridge will go online to order food when it ’s empty. No more shopping!
More brain power Scientists say they ’ll be able to build a computer that is like a human brain by 2020. Robots with these man-make brains will do many jobs that humans do today. Road travel will become safer because cars will control themselves. So by the 2030s, there won ’t be car accidents any more. We ’ll be able to put computer chips (芯片) in the human brain to make us cleverer and in crease our
knowledge. But soon computers will become cleverer than people. Some scientists say that computers may even take control of our lives. Terrible, right?
81. What do health watchers find?
82. Will most people work at home or in an office in 20 to 30 years ’ time?
83. What can help you take and send a picture in the future?
84. Why will the future traffic be safer?
85. What will life be like in the future?
