Looking for some bucket-list travel ideas You can’t go wrong with these natural wonders.
Marble Chapels, Patagonia
The Marble Chapels are an absolute must when visiting Patagonia. The stunning caves are located in the middle of General Carrera Lake, which makes them accessible only by boat. The Marble Chapels are layers of calcium carbonate (碳酸钙)formations resulting from wind and water slapping the rocks. The best time to visit is in the austral summer, from December to March. One of the world’s greatest views also happens to be one of the most vulnerable. Whether you choose to view this global treasure from a helicopter or go diving to enjoy close encounters with tropical fish, it’s hard not to notice the direct impact of climate change.Warmer temperatures have led to amounts of coral bleaching(珊瑚白化). If the damage continues at the rate, more than 90 percent of the living coral will erode within the next decade.
Blue Grotto, Malta
Malta is known for year-round warm weather, ancient cities, dazzling beaches, and the Blue Grotto: a series of caves that form high arches along the southern coast of the island. Maybe it’s because it was our first purchase as hom eowners. The salesman must have spotted just how green we were, so he began persuading. And soon he led us to a classic leather chair. All these years later, I remember he used words like rich and handsome, the thing every living room needed.
We believed him. So we bought that chair — just less than $100, a great deal in the 1970s for a young couple !
How we loved that chair ! It always occupied a place of honor in our various living rooms, moving with us from our first tiny house
to our beloved new house.
Somehow, conversations were better on that chair, and life was more fun around it. Three daughters spilled their secrets on it. Old friends seemed to be attracted by it on those wonderful occasions. Crazy as it sounds, that leather chair seemed to have — well, powers. All for good.
At first, we didn’t really care that the leather was showing signs of wear(磨损) or that it had lost its sheen (光泽). But in our most recent move, when the chair was moved in our new living room, it suddenly looked terribly lonely sitting close to newly painted walls and a couple of shiny new tables.
My husband and I tried but still we couldn’t ignore the rough spots. Our chair had a skin disease. Even our adult kids raised eyebrows, urging us to at least remove the chair to some dark corner of the room. Neither of us could imagine such a retirement for it.
So we had an inspired idea. We’d call in an upholsterer (修理工) to give our old chair a whole new life. Our friend Joe studied the chair and then took out a simple leather conditioner. He explained that although it wouldn’t work miracles, it would definitely get our weary chair looking younger again. It certainly doesn’t look new, but its seat and back are shining, and some of its deeper wrinkles have lightened.
Best of all, it’s back in the living room, looking like a wise old friend to the furniture around it. And, yes, there it will stay.
Because some things, like some people, just deserve a happy old age.
24. How did the salesman persuade the author into buying the chair
A. By thinking highly of the author.
B. By saying that the author was green.
C. By describing how great the chair was.
D. By comparing the chair with others.
25. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. Sweet memories with the chair.
B. Various functions of the chair.
C. People’s comments on the chair.
D. Family activities and parties of friends.
26. Why did the author finally decide to repair the chair
A. Because she was persuaded by Joe.
B. Because it couldn’t match her new house.
C. Because she didn’t have eno ugh money.
D. Because it showed signs of hardness.
27. What can we learn from the text
A. East or west, home is best.
B. From saving comes having.
C. It is never too late to mend.
D. Old friends and wine are best.
C
Starch(淀粉) is the main component of flour, rice and corn among others, while carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) makes up the vast majority of greenhouse gases. One day, humans may be able to “eat” carbon dioxide, and global warming could be “eaten away” by carbon lovers. Although it sounds wild, the day is coming. Chinese scientists have created starch using carbon dioxide, hydrogen and electricity, according to a study published in Science in September, 2021.
“Plants create starch through photosynthesis(光合作用), which is a complex and inefficient process,” Ma Y anhe, the director of the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily. He added that it would take a plant about 60 steps to turn carbon dioxide, water and sunlight into starch.
“Our breakthrough shows that making starch is achievable in a lab. This method makes it possible to produce food in factories and there are many industries that can benefit from this technology,” Ma told China Daily.
The team has been working on the process for 6 years. “The fir st step of the method is to convert carbon dioxide and hydrogen into
methanol(甲醇), which is a molecule(分子) that contains a single carbon atom,” Cai Tao, one of the first authors of the study, told China Daily.
Scientists then piece these single-carbon molecules into bigger and more complex molecules. With the help of supercomputing, Chinese scientists have simplified the natural starch-making process from about 60 steps into 11.
“The new process has made it possible to turn starch production from traditional agricultural farming to industrial production. And it may be possible to satisfy our needs without farming in the future. This will not only help save water, fertilizer and land but also help recycle carbon dioxide to deal with climate change,” a researc h fellow with the Chinese Academy of Sciences told the Global Times. The study can also benefit space exploration in the future. The starch may provide a secure food source for astronauts as they travel long distances in space by simply turning the carbon dioxide they breathe out into food.
28. What does Ma Yanhe think of the new method of creating starch
A. It’s more efficient than the natural method.
B. It’s achievable through photosynthesis.
C. It’s a way of dealing with global warming.
D. It’s extremely complex and inefficient.
29. The underlined word “convert” in Paragraph 5 probably means ________.
A. Push
B. change
C. divide
D. mix
30. What can be learned about the breakthrough
A. It can help improve people’s health.
B. It can provide astronauts with nutritious(营养的) food.
C. It can change the way of starch production.
D. It can save farmers from traditional agriculture.
31. What can be the best title of this passage
A. Smart with starch
B. Hungry for starch
C. Secure about food supply
D. Beneficial to food diversity

For years, doctors have given blood to patients who need it to survive. These transfusions(输血) usually include giving red blood cells to patients.
Blood transfusions aren't as simple as taking blood from one person and giving it to someone else. There’re several different blood types that don't all mix well. If someone gets a transfusion of the wrong kind of blood, their body will reject the blood cells, causing problems. For the first time ever, scientists from the University of Bristol, Britain, are carrying out a new trail: testing red
blood cells grown in a laboratory on human volunteers. The scientists have used stem cells (干细胞) from a blood sample to grow billions of brand new red blood cells.
This could be even better than a regular blood transfusion. For one thing, they can be adjusted for people with different blood types. That'll be extremely helpful for people with rare blood types. Also, a normal transfusion has red blood cells of all different ages, which means only a small part of them are brand new. The red blood cells grown in the lab are brand new, and this means they last longer and that patients will need fewer transfusions.
To test its safety, researchers have given a couple of teaspoons of the blood to two healthy people, both of whom seem to be doing just fine after the transfusions. In all, they'll be tested on 10 people, and compared to normal transfusions. The new process doesn't indicate that normal blood transfusions will disappear. Meanwhile, growing red blood cells in a lab is extremely expensive. And a lot of work and testing still need to be done. But if it's successful, the process could make life much easier for patients who often need transfusions-even those with rare blood types.
32.What is special about the red blood cells in the experiment
A. They're given by those with rare blood types.
B. They 're collected from seriously ill patients.
C. They're specifically for a single blood type.
D. They've never existed in any human bodies.
33. What is the disadvantage of normal blood transfusion
A. There is often a shortage of blood.
B. It often takes the patient a lot of time.
C. Most normal blood cells don't live long.
D. It's dangerous for those with rare blood types.
34. What can be inferred about the new process of red blood cells
A. It will have a long way to go.
B. It'll replace normal transfusions.
C. It will separate rare blood types.
D. It'll reduce blood research costs.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Blood Transfusions Get Easier
B. Rare Blood Types Are Not Rare
C. Scientists Test Lab-created Blood
D. Rare Blood Cells Need Donating

There are many things that we would be thankful for in life, but many people aren't, including me.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable. For years, she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help her until I became a teenager. Suddenly I was too
caught up in my world to worry about helping others.
One summer day, when I was 12,Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin(破坏) everything Eventually, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Feeling angry, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation.
“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going ” Mom asked calmly.
“I guess...,” I murmured(嘟哝) under my breath. “Sweetheart, we are going to a children’s shelter(庇护所), I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.
I felt even more angry. How was I supposed to hep there
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victory home.As we got close to the large front porch(门廊), wind bells played a calming tune while trees and flowers welcomed us.Maybe this wasn't going to be so bad.
Mom ran the doorbell. The door opened and we were shown to the front room, where all of the children were playing.Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby with wounds(伤口) on his body. The majority of the children had noticeable physical
scars(伤痕) such as the cuts, scratches(抓伤) and burns. What a terrible life they had before they moved here! My heart sank.

参考范文:
Dear John,
I’m very pleased to invite you to enjoy a traditional Chinese festival — the Lantern Festival.
First, I’d like to tell you something about the festival, which is celebrated on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar year. It is one of the biggest holidays in China. Several days before it, people begin to make lanterns, which are made in the shape of different animals, vegetables, fruits and many other things. Meanwhile, people usually write riddles on them. On the eve of it, all the lanterns are hung up. People appreciate them and guess the riddles.
Why not come and enjoy the strong atmosphere of the festival I
hope you can make it. I’m looking forward to your coming and reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl with brown eyes looking up at me.Her face lighted, although there were some scars on her little arms. “Hi. I’m Ashley. Do you want to play dolls with me ” she asked. I looked over and saw Mom nodding to me with a smile. I bent towards Ashley and whispered, “Sure. I’d love to.” Her tiny hand reached up and took mine, and we walked towards the doll house. Our time
to-gether brought her great joy and fun and she also made my day.
I returned to the shelter with Mom several times. During those visits, some of the children including Ashley shared their troubled pasts with me in great detail. I felt sorry for what had happened to them and treasured the friendship between us. I would like to do everything in my power to help the children there. At the same time, I learned to be grateful for all that I had. It was a meaningful time in my young life that I will never forget. It was Mom who taught me the valuable lesson that summer.。
