School was always something I loved because I always enjoyed learning more. I never felt afraid of going to school early in the morning, and I never tried to get out of any work. I stayed after school every chance I got. I did most of the work I could, got the best grades I could, and in the end, I graduated from high school with honors. All my success was because of the teachers I had who helped me, pushed me, and made learning a fun thing to do.
At the beginning of the school year, I had a lot of trouble leaving my mom in the mornings, but Mrs. Trainer always sat with me, talked with me, and helped me feel OK without my mom. She was understanding, kind, and always made the classroom a comfortable place. Mrs.Trainer also sat down and helped me learn; I was, and still, the worst speller, but she tried her best to help me.
The second was my senior high school English teacher, Mr. Stonerock. Mr. Stonerock was able to make English and writing fun, especially when we had eight-page papers to hand in. Some of my favorite high school memories(记忆) were in his classes. Mr. Stonerock also taught my class APA format(格式)which to me is invaluable. I use it every day in my life. He put up with so many shenanigans(恶作剧)from my classmates and me and always did it with a smile.
My point to all of this is that there are amazing and caring teachers out there whether they teach college level classes, high school level classes, or primary level classes. I have had more influential teachers than I can count. I am still in touch with some of my high school teachers, who give me life advice and guide me. Teachers are invaluable resources and no one can take their place.
4.Which of the following can best describe the author as a student?
A.Creative and proud.B.Confident and polite.
C.Kind-hearted and honest.D.Hard-working and excellent.
5.How did Mrs.Trainer help the author?
A.By teaching him like a mother.
B.By helping him to be the best speller.
C.By asking him easy questions in class.
D.By learning about his habits from his mother.
6.What is the most useful skill the author learnt from Mr.Stonerock?
A.How to finish papers quickly.
B.How to use APA format correctly.
C.How to learn English in a fun way.
D.How to get on well with classmates.
7.What is the best title of this text?
A.How to Be Good Teachers.B.My Experience As a Teacher.
C.The Greatness of Teachers.D.The Joy of Being a Teacher.
The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate ones on the whole.
The origin (起源) of the Eastern culture is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers — the Yellow River in China and the Hindu River in India. They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles.
When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was up on the Mesopotamian Plain — the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn’t have much difference from the European culture.
At the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences. Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic (象形) language while the western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like human race differences count as well. But what’s more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and the west, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference from the other.
The differences are everywhere. They are obvious and make people’s ways of thinking and their views of the world different. But different cultures make the world of 21st century more colorful. The cultural difference should not be the obstacle (障碍) to the civilization of human being. It ought to be the driving force of our going farther.
8.What is the text mainly about?
A.The origin of cultures.B.Culture differences.
C.Language systems.D.Colorful world.
9.Why is the American culture similar to the European culture?
A.Both of the two cultures have a very long history.
B.They have the same mother rivers as the Chinese culture.
C.The early settlers from Britain brought their culture to America.
D.Both the British and the American live along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. 10.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “interference” in paragraph4?
A.difference B.influence
C.confidence D.environment
11.Where is the passage most likely from?
A.A diary.B.A magazine.
C.A novel.D.A guidebook.
Rainforests provide much of the world’s oxygen. People have been trying to protect them for years. But another type of forest, the cloud forest, is just as important to humans.
These forests are at the tops of mountains, generally near the equator(赤道). These wet, wooded mountaintops are mainly in African and Central and South American countries. They are called “cloud forests” because their height allows for the formation of clouds among the trees. The trees in these forests pull water out of the clouds. The water gathers on the leaves and falls into small rivers below, which flow into towns at the bottom of the mountain. The yearly rainfall in these areas is about 180 centimetres. Cloud forests can pull in up to 60 percent of that. The water is important to the plants and the people in the area. It helps them survive.
These forests are being destroyed at an increasing speed. Trees are being cut down, and roads are being built in their place. Some people have a goal to get government money to protect the forests. But they have had little success so far. Another way is to take the place of the destroyed plants with new ones. That, too, has been difficult because the plants are so special. There’s plenty of work to be done, but saving the cloud forests is still possible with creative solutions.
12.Where can you probably find cloud forests?
A.In North America.B.Far from the equator.
C.In an African country.D.At the foot of mountains.
13.How much rainfall is pulled in by the cloud forests in those areas every year?
A.About 60 cm.B.About 108 cm.
C.About 180 cm.D.About 300 cm.
14.What will be discussed in the following part of the text?
A.Ways to protect cloud forests.B.Goals of cloud forest protectors.
C.Difficulties in planting new trees.D.Successes of getting wide support. 15.Where can we probably find the text?
A.In a storybook.B.In a travel guide.
C.In a chemistry textbook.D.In a geography magazine.
