Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees comm unicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next g eneration?
UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more co mplex than most of us ever imagined .Although Charles Darwi n thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Si mard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is tr ue: trees survive through their co-
operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition “d epending on who needs it”.
Nitrogen
(氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground f ungi(真
菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecologic al system give and receive just the right amount to keep them
all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons(神经元)
in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all. Simard talks about “mother trees”, usually the largest and old est plants on which all other trees depend .She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transpo rting important minerals to young trees so they may continue t o grow .When humans cut down “mother trees” with no aware ness of these highly complex “tre e societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival f or the entire forest.
“We didn't take any notice of it .” Simard says sadly .“Dying tr ees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we n ever give them cha nce.” If we could put across the message t o the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towa rds our environmental protection efforts for the future.
59.The underlined sentence “the opposite is true” in Paragrap
h 2 probably means that trees______.
pete for survival
B.protect their own wealth
C.depend on each other
D.provide support for dying trees
60.“Mother trees” are extremely important because they_____ _.
A.look the largest in size in the forest
B.pass on nutrition to young trees
C.seem more likely to be cut down by humans
D.know more about the complex“tree societies”
61.The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to____ __.
A.how “tree societies” work
B.how trees grow old
C.how forestry industry develops
D.how young trees survive
62.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Old Trees Communicate Like Humans
B.Young Trees Are In Need Of Protection
C.Trees Are More Complex Than You Think
D.Trees Contribute To Our Society

Your house may have an effect on your figure.Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off.You can make your en vironment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights.Dark environments ar e more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often les
s self-conscious(难为
情) when they’re in poorly lit places — and so more likely to e at lots of food.If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our app etites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room con sumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room.Wa rm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to re paint,go blue.
Don’t forget the clock — or the radio.People who eat slowly te nd to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路
里)per meal than those who rush through their meals.Begin k eeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it,actually sit down to eat.If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It make s you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-
inch plate.When we choose a large spoon over a smaller o ne,total intake(摄
入) jumps by 14 percent.And we’ll pour about 30 percent mor
e liquid into a short,wide glass than a tall,skinny glass.
63.The text is especially helpful for those who care about____ ___.
A. healthy diets
B. house buying
C. their body shape
D. their home comforts
64.A home environment in blue can help people_________.
A. reduce food intake
B. digest food better
C. regain their appetites
D. burn more calories
65.What are people advised to do at mealtimes?
A. Use smaller spoons.
B. Turn down the lights.
C. Eat quickly.
D. Play fast music.
66.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?
B. Is Your House Making You Fat?
C. Ways of Serving Dinner
D. Effects of Self-Consciousness

3:00 pm It’s Friday. Alice comes home from high school to her mother who greets her at the door. She puts her backpack on her bedroom floor. She sees that she got a text from her frien d, and hurriedly texts back before getting a head start on her homework.
4:15 pmAlice takes a moon cake from the kitchen that her mot her has set aside for her. Her mother sits her down in the dini ng room to ask about Alice’s day. Alice tells her mother in Chi nese about her math test that morning. She fails to tell her ab out her history class on women’s rights and her modern art cl ass, because she knows it would make her mother uncomfort able.
6:30 pm Alice tells her mother in rapid Chinese that s he’s don e her homework and mentions that there is a mandatory(强制的) school function that night which she will have to attend. Sh e asks her if she can go over to a friend’s house to study in th e meantime. Her mother refuses because she has arranged f or a tutor to come over.
7:00 pm Alice puts on a long-
sleeved shirt and jeans, because she knows her mother woul d approve, but secretly packs a crop top(露脐
装) and shorts. She empties her backpack of books and puts i n her change of clothes.
7:45 pm Alice’s mother drives her to the school and drops her off. She tells Alice that she’ll pick her up when the function is over. The girl tells her mother that she will call.
8:00 pm Alice finds her friend. She changes to English and tel ls her that she’ll be right back. She goes into the bathroom an
d changes into th
e clothes that she brought. She now looks lik
e all the other kids at the dance. She deeply loves her mother and hates lying to her, but she knows that is the only way she’ll understand. Avoiding the issue entirely by just “slipping out”is the only way she feels she can maintain her loving relations hip at home, but still fit in with her schoolmates, who are them selves doing something that is supported by their parents.
In today’s world, scenarios (情
况) like this one are more than frequent. They’re everywhere. Being born or living in a different country than the country you r parents grew up in has become more and more regular. In t he U.S. where the word “immigration” (移
民) is often on people’s lips, nearly one-
quarter of the 70.9 million children and adolescents under 17 i n 2009 had at least one immigrant parent. The untold story of immigration is the stress put on the adolescents who need to l ive in two different worlds at the same time.
In the home, these teenagers are brought up within the traditi onal culture of their parents. They eat sushi, andxiao long bao , but even more than that, they’re brought up with the ideas a nd values of their parents’ cultures. Even the most independe nt teenager is influenced by his or her parents. However, as s oon as these teenagers leave their houses, these values and
expectations begin to lose their meaning. Instead of it being s omething that unites them with others, these traditional princip les create cultural boundaries between teenagers. Seeing this and desperately wanting to connect with others, teenagers ca st off(抛
弃)their identities and roles in the home and put on a new cult ure and set of values.
These teenagers change themselves many times a day to ad apt to these different worlds. Of course this isn’t something th at they necessarily have to do. But following what their parent s want and what their friends expect gives them the ability to f eel accepted both in their home and in their school. In most c ases, these teenagers are not pretending to be something the y’re not. Rather, they are simply willing to play double roles in the drama of their life, adding an extra layer of stress to their t eenage years.
What does Alice probably do between 3:00 pm and 4:15 pm?
A. She keeps texting her friend.
B. She pre pares for supper.
C. She does her homework.
D. She tidies her bedroom.
68. What can be inferred (推断) from Alice’s story?
A. Her social life is limited by her mother.
B. She is forbidden to speak Chinese at school.
C. Her mother is interested in history and art.
D. Her mother doesn’t seem to care much about her studies.
69. By “slipping out” in Paragraph 6, the author probably mea ns Alice ________.
A. tells her mother she’ll go over to her friend’s home
B. goes to dance at the school party with other kids
C. fails to tell her mother what she’ll truly do
D. wears a long-sleeved shirt and jeans
70. The last paragraph implies (暗
示) that teenagers from immigrant families ________.
A. have their own ways to cope with stress

C. feel rather satisfied with their social activities
D. want to be accepted by the people around them
