三.阅读理解

Reading is one of the most enjoyable and useful skills a human being can pick up. It’s also one of the most time-consuming (耗时的). That’s why speed-reading courses are so popular. They promise to teach you how to read more in less time. Do these courses work?
Most courses just teach you how to “skim” and “scan.” They can be useful. There is, however, a new course called Quantum Speed Reading. It promises much more. This course claims that it will teach you to read 100,000 characters in five minutes. All you have to do is to flip the pages of the book. Your brain will take in all the information. In this way, you can read The Dream of the Red Chamber (《红楼梦》) in less than an hour. Learning this magic technique costs you 250,000 yuan. My opinion? Don’t waste your money!
A good English reader can read about 300 words in one minute. A really good reader can read 600 words a minute. And, according to some studies, the faster you read, the less you comprehend what you have read. So, speed-reading doesn’t really help you learn more quickly.
Reading, however, is something we also do for pleasure. There is no joy in racing through Cao Xueqin’s novel if all you can say about it is, “Um, I think it’s about an old Chinese family.” For this kind of reading, slow is better than fast. Reading is a skill, not a magic trick. Your speed will improve naturally as you read more—whether it’s for fun or for school.
1. Why do people take courses on speed-reading?
A. Because they want to read more in less time.
B. Because they have no time to read.
C. Because they think reading is enjoyable
D. Because reading is becoming popular.
2. What does the writer think of the course called Quantum Speed Reading?
A. Amazing.
B. Magical.
C. Unbelievable.
D. Powerful.
3. The underlined part “flip the pages of the book” in the article means “ ______”.
A. turn the pages carefully
B. turn the pages quickly
C. read the headlines of each part
D. choose a few pages to read
4. What does the passage mainly want to tell us?
A. The faster you read, the more quickly you will learn about the material.
B. Practise reading more, and your reading speed will improve little by little.
C. It’s really fun to read The Dream of the Red Chamber in less than an hour.
D. You’d better take some courses if you want to improve your reading s peed.
B
Does this happen to you? You are in the middle of a
conversation. Suddenly, you get stuck on a particular word.
It’s right there… if you could just remember.
You move on. Hours later, the word comes to you.
However, you no longer need it—that conversation is over.
What happened?
You have just experienced a tip-of-the-tongue moment. Well, you don’t need to feel nervous about it. Such moments are simply part of the way we communicate.
Lise Abrams is a psychology (心理学) professor at the University of Florida. He has studied tip-of-the-tongue moments for more than twenty years. According to his research, anybody, in any culture, any language and any age group, experiences tip-of-the-tongue moments.
We are more likely to get stuck on words we use less frequently. Besides, proper names (专有名词) lead to tip-of-the-tongue moments more often. The reason might be that a proper name may refer to different people or things that just have the same name.
Here is an example. Think of the name of the hero in the last novel you read. Now think of the hand-held device (设备) with numbered buttons you use to do calculations. Which word comes to your mind first?
“Calculator!” you will say. That’s because every calculator shares those same
features. As a result, you have more “hints” (提示,暗示) when you try to remember the word. On the other hand, dozens—if not hundreds—of novels have a Tom. They are all very different from each other.
Can we do something to avoid tip-of-the-tongue moments? Well, according to Abrams, one way is to use certain words or names more often. Say, if you can never seem to remember the name of that singer your classmates often talk about, try saying his or her name out loud whenever you can. It could save you from embarrassment some day.
1. A tip-of-the-tongue moment refers to the moment that ______.
A. you come across a new word in the middle of a conversation
B. the word is in your memory, but you just can’t speak it out
C. you forget the name of a proper name during a conversation
D. you don’t know how to express yourself properly in a conversation
2. According to the article, we are more likely to get stu ck on words like “royal” than
words
like “bike” because ______.
A. we often don’t know what the meanings of words like “royal” are
B. we use words like “royal” less frequently in daily conversations
C. words like “royal” are proper names and we can’t rem ember them
D. words like “royal” cannot be translated into Chinese correctly
3. According to Lise Abrams, we can avoid tip-of-the-tongue moments by ______.
A. chatting with our classmates more often
B. talking loudly wherever we can
C. repeating words we cannot remember aloud
D. taking notes when we read novels
3. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Asians are more likely to experience tip-of-the-tongue moments than Westerners.
B. Lise Abrams is the only researcher studying tip-of-the-tongue moments in the world.
C. We need to be nervous if we frequently experience tip-of-the-tongue moments.
D. “Calculator” is not a proper name; the name of the hero in the novel Jane Eyre is.

五. 任务型阅读
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容完成表格中所缺信息,每空一词。

Nobody likes making mistakes. But, no one is perfect. If you can learn from mistakes correctly, they can move you forward.
If you have made mistakes that harm other people, it is important to offer a sincere apology (道歉)in person. A good apology will probably make the other person
forgive(原谅) you. If you refuse to apologize, the person hurt by you will hold it against you.
If you are afraid to make a mistake, you will spend most of your life doing nothing. There is no harm in making mistakes, it is a part of going forward. The more duties you take, the more likely you will make mistakes.
Unluckily, it is natural to justify(为……辩解)our actions. When you make a mistake, you will first blame(责备) someone else. When mistakes are made, the boss won’t be interested in justifications. Sometimes it is best to say, very simply--yes, I made a mistake.
Mistakes happen for different reasons. To avoid repeating them, you need to understand the main reason. For example, you may have made a mistake by saying some unkind words. If you make mistakes because you are tired, try to get more sleep; if you are stressed, look at ways to relax and keep away from the stress of work.
You should avoid feeling guilty about making mistakes, but at the same time, you should make a decision to learn from them. If you repeat the same mistakes, it shows you aren’t making progress and they cause repeating suffering. Often mistakes are caused by bad habits. To avoid making the same mistakes you need to break these bad habits. The sooner, the better.

Arthur Wayne, a famous scientist, happened to be in the forest w 9 we lived in at the time. Hearing me crying over the death of my bird, he told me what happened. “A mother mockingbird, f10 her baby in a cage, will sometimes bring it poison food. She thinks it better for her baby to die than to live in a cage.” 七、书面表达
