Have you ever heard the saying “If you want a friend, be one.”?

Then she said in a quiet voice, “Good morning. How nice it is to have all of you in my class this year. I’d like to meet all of you. When I was about 12, I had an enemy (敌人), a girl who liked to point out my shortings (缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin; I wasn’t a good student; I talked too much; I was too proud (骄傲), and so on. I tried to hear all these as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly. Then he asked, “Are the thing she said true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever think about what you are really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being ver y thin), but a good number I could --- and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I got a very clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He wouldn’t like to take it. “That is just for you,” he said, “You know better than anyo ne else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you will
find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do the right thing.”

That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had bee too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers(抢劫犯). Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment(公寓), I heard a sound behind me and turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still , the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reachedmy apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my
wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired any more. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck(垃圾车)pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?” I t hought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eyes. “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 am by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

First, smile at your classmates. Do this as often as you can, until your classmates bee used to your smiles and smile in return. 93
Perhaps you could ask a classmate about your studies. 94
There must be someone else in your class who is also quiet. It might be easier to try to talk with him or her. 95 Once you have more confidence, you can make as many friends as you want.
