Parents do not owe(欠)their children a college education. If they can afford it,they can certainly send them to a good university. But they needn't feel guilty if they can't.When children grow up and want to get married, their parents do not owe them an apartment. They do not have the duty to look after their grandchildren, either. If they want to do it,it must be considered a favor, not an obligation.
Do parents owe their children anything?Yes,they owe them a great deal.
One of their obligations is to give their children a personal worth.Children who are always made to feel stupid and unworthy, constantly compared with brighter brothers, sisters,or cousins will become so unsure,so afraid of failing that they won't try at all.Of course they should be properly corrected when they do wrong, but it's often better to let children learn their mistakes by themselves in time. All their parents should do is to trust them, respect them, understand them and give them chances to try and fail. They must learn to stand failure. When criticisms(批评)are really needed, they should be balanced with a smile and a kiss. That is the way children learn.
Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others. Also it means being respectful to elders,to teachers, and to the law.The best way to teach such values is by deed.A child who is lied to will lie.A child who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have difficulty laughing and loving.
No child asks to be born.If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something.
24.The author thinks parents_
A.should send their children to college
B.should support their children after they get married
C.need to buy an apartment for their children
D.needn't feel guilty if they can't send their children to universities
25.What does the underlined word"obligation"in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Right.
B.Promise.
C.Duty.
D.Excuse.
26.According to the passage, what should parents do when children make mistakes?
A.Understand them and tell them not to do that again.
B.Let them learn the mistakes by themselves in time.
pare them with brighter brothers or sisters.
D.Correct their mistakes immediately.
27.What does the author mainly talk about in this passage?
A.The duties of parents.
B.The best way to teach children.
C.The reason why children feel stupid and unworthy.
D.The reason why parents owe their children something.

Many people have long dreamed of being able to fly around as simply as riding a bicycle. Yet the safety and strength of a flying bike was always a big problem.Over the past 10 years, developments in technology have moved the dream of personal flying vehicles closer to reality. Now,two groups of inventors say such vehicles may be available soon.
The British company Malloy Aeronautics has developed a prototype(原型)of its flying bicycle.Grant Stapleton, marketing sales director of Malloy Aeronautics, says the Hoverbike is
able to get in and out of small spaces very quickly."It can be moved across continents very quickly because it can be folded and packed,"he adds.
Mr.Stapleton says safety was the company's main concern. He says the designers solved the safety issue by using overlapping rotors to power the vehicle.
The company is testing a full-size prototype of the Hoverbike, which will most likely be used first by the police and emergency rescue teams.
In New Zealand,Martin Aircraft Company is also testing a full-size prototype of its personal flying device, called the Jetpack. It can fly for more than 30 minutes,up to 1,000 meters high and reach a speed of 74 kilometers per hour.
Peter Coker is the CEO of Martin Aircraft Company. He said the Jetpack"is built around safety from the start".In his words,"Reliability(可靠)is the most important element of it.We have safety built into the actual structure itself, very similar to a Formula One racing car."
The Jetpack uses a gasoline-powered engine that produces two powerful jet streams.Mr. Coker says it also has a parachute(降落伞)that would be used,if there should be an emergency."It starts to work at very low altitude and actually saves both the aircraft and the pilot,"he adds.
Mr.Coker says the Jetpack will be ready for sale soon.

A.the Jetpack is very safe and reliable
B.the engine of the Jetpack is powerful
C.the actual structure of the Jetpack is unique
D.the Jetpack can reach a great speed and height
30.The underlined word“It”in the last paragraph refers to______________
A.the jet stream
B.the engine
C.the Jetpack
D.the parachute
31.What is the author's main purpose of writing the passage?
A.To describe the problems of inventing flying vehicles.
B.To advertise the two personal flying vehicles.
C.To show the differences between two flying vehicles.

An unpleasant smell floated into my nose as the bowl of fried stinky tofu(臭豆腐)settled onto my grandmother's dinner table.I immediately sat back. The smell ruined my appetite, and I pushed the dish away.
“It's supposed to stink.Just give it a try!"my grandmother said.
Holding my breath,I unwillingly took a bite.To my surprise, the tofu beneath the fried skin was warm, soft, and mouthwatering.Since then, whenever I visited my grandmother's house,I would rush to the kitchen for the stinky tofu with excitement. Thus, stinky tofu became more than a household tradition. It became my favorite dish.
Along with the stinky tofu,I would meet my Uncle Chan on every visit. As an immature boy,I never understood my uncle's condition of Down syndrome(唐氏综合征)。

He was an unfriendly and terrible creature in my eyes.He constantly walked around the house, talking to himself.Whenever he was within view,I would run away in fear.
However, one day,my view of my uncle suddenly changed.I was just getting out of my bed when I heard soft steps approaching. It was my uncle. My muscles froze. He slowly sat next to me and touched my face gently,as a mother would stroke(抚摸)a baby.
A wide smile emerged(出现)from his blank expression. How beautiful his smile was!I could not help but smile back.My fear disappeared gradually, and my muscles relaxed. For the first time,I could see softness and warmth in his eyes.
My uncle very much resembles stinky tofu.Stinky tofu smells unpleasant on the outside, yet feels warm and soft in the inside.Like stinky tofu,my uncle's Down syndrome made me keep my distance at first.Yet,I learned that deep inside,he is harmless and has a loving nature.
Some people tend to look down upon disabled people and regard them as unfit for a regular life.As I was able to see through the outer surface of the tofu, these people are unable to see through the surface of prejudice(偏见). As a result, they judge the disabled with one glance.
The outside and inside of the stinky tofu exist as two extremely different worlds.Perhaps that is what makes it such a tasty dish. Not only is it delicious, stinky tofu offers a valuable lesson:never judge people at first glance, for true beauty comes from the inside.
32.Why did stinky tofu become the author's favorite dish?
A.It was related to family tradition.
B.It turned out to be quite delicious.
C.Grandma encouraged him to try it.
D.His appetite for food had increased.
33.What did the author think of his uncle at first?
A.He was a quiet person.
B.He was an energetic guy.
C.He was an immature man.
D.He was a strange creature.
34.The author's attitude towards Uncle Chan changed when_
A.Chan's footsteps woke up the author
B.Chan showed his friendliness to the author
C.Chan displayed his love towards his mother
D.Chan's blank expression made the author smile
35.What does the author mainly want to tell us in the passage?
A.We shouldn't judge by appearances.
B.A person's taste changes over time.
C.Blood is thicker than water.
D.You are what you eat.

录音原文:
Text 1
M: This month, our trip will be to the museum. We will take a school bus to the Colma station. Then we’ll take the subway downtown. Yes, Tammy?
W: Can our parents drive us instead? (1)
M: No, I want us to go as a group.
Text 2
W: I heard on the news that we’re finally going to be getting some rain in the next few days. M: That’s good news. This has been one of the driest months on record, (2) so I’m sure the trees really need it.
Text 3
W: What a wonderful wedding that was! It will be a big task to sweep up all that litter.
M: The rules of the wedding hall say throwing colored paper is banned. (3) Throwing rice is OK. And even bits of torn-up newspaper are allowed.
W: That’s crazy!
Text 4
W: On the front page of yesterday’s newspaper, it says that you have come to an agreement with the Canadian government. Can you tell us more about that?
M: Absolutely. We have agreed to continue working together to improve economic relations between our two countries. (4)
Text 5
W: Can I have something to drink? My throat is so dry from our workout earlier, and all I had today was about a liter.
M: You need to drink some water then.I drink two liters a day usually, and an extra one when I exercise. (5)
Text 6
M: Let’s visit the steam railway tomorrow. It’s so exciti ng. (6)
W: You’re like a little boy who wants to see those old trains pumping out smoke and steam. M: I love the power and the size of them — but most of all I just love the steam. It is great to see them in action and we can ride on one as well.
W: Yes. I like them, too. It is like going back to the old days when all trains were black. (7) M: Well, tomorrow there will be green ones and red ones, too.
Text 7
W:I understand that you’re looking to start a show within the next two years. Is this true? (8)
M: Yes.I’ve always wanted to be one of the people you see on television talking to guests about their careers. (8)
W: Have you thought about other options? Those types of shows can be on many different types of media. Many hosts start out on the radio, but now the technology is better and you can even make a show on the Internet.
M: I want it to be the show that people watch while they’re eating dinner. (9)
W: That’s a good goal, but it’ll be difficult to get you on television with just that idea. I suggest you come up with something that makes you different from the other similar shows airing now. (10)
Text 8 (第11题为总结题)
M: Can you pick up the name cards for the conference?
W: Sure, but I need to stop by the hospital first and drop off the card and gift we got for Andy. (12)
M: Of course! I can’t believe I forgot about that.
W: I hope I bought him the right gift.
M: I’m sure it’s fine.
W: I hope so, because last year I wasn’t sure if he liked the birthday gift I got him. I bought him a Lego Star Wars set, because I overheard him talk about it with Mary. But, when he opened it, he asked me if I thought he was a child. (13)
M: I remember that! That was funny! He was joking but you looked so lost. (13) We just laughed at your reaction.
W: OK, I figured he was joking, but I was not sure. (13)
M: No, no. He appreciated it. How long will he be in hospital, do you know?
W: A few more days. He should be able to get back to work soon.
M: OK, great. Send him my best!
W: Will do!
Text 9
M: Let’s go for a swim today.
W: How about going to the lake? (14)
M: It’s too hot inland. The temperature is supposed to reach 105 degrees today. (14) W: Then where should we go?
M: I think the coast is the best place.
W: But the beaches will be too crowded today, won’t they? It’s Sat urday, so everyone will have the same idea as we do.
M: I know a place that isn’t as popular. That beach is rather small and rocky, but it will be suitable for swimming.
W: Sounds great! I’ll pack our bags. (15) Can you fix something for lunch? We can eat on the way. M: Sure. Cheese sandwiches are easy to eat on the road. We can buy cold soda at the gas station. (16)
W: I’d rather take iced coffee.
M: You’ll have to make it, then. I never know how you like it.
W: All right. Do you want me to pack a pair of pants for you?
M: No, I’ll just wear my swimsuit. I can dry off in the sun before we leave the beach.
W:I’ll take extra towels, just in case. (17)
M: That’s good. We can lie on them in the sun. (17)
W: And if there aren’t a lot of trees, we can hang up th e towels for some shade.
M: You could do that, but not for me.
Text 10
In today’s class, we will do a role-playing exercise to better understand what life was like during the Industrial Revolution in Europe in the late 18th and early 19th century. (18) All the information you need is in the instruction sheet in front of you. First, I will need to separate the class into three groups. Each group represents a different class during that time period. The first group will represent the upper class and play the role of owners of businesses in the city. The second group will represent the middle to lower class and play the role of business managers. (19) The third group will represent and play the role of the working class. This last group will consist of different types of working-class families, such as
single-parent families and families who lost their parents. In addition to those groups, I will need two students to represent the bank and two to represent security officers. (20) Each group will have a specific set of goals they must reach by the end of class while trying to follow city rules, like paying taxes and keeping the city at peace. Any questions?。
