Dragons are Awesome! Eastern Dragons vs Western Dragons
Hi! My name is Tommy and I'm 10 years old. I really, really love dragons! They are the coolest mythical creatures ever. I have books, toys, posters, everything with dragons on it. My favorites are the dragons from Game of Thrones and How to Train Your Dragon. But did you know there are different kinds of dragons from different cultures? The Eastern dragons from places like China are pretty different from the Western dragons we see in movies and books. Let me tell you about the awesome differences!
Body Shapes
Western dragons are usually depicted as these big, muscular, winged lizard-like creatures with horns and fangs and claws. They're often shown as these fearsome beasts guarding treasure hoards in caves or castles. Eastern dragons on the other hand look more like gigantic serpents or snakes. Instead of legs, they have long, sinuous bodies. Most Eastern dragon art shows them without wings too, which is different from Western ones which almost always have bat-like wings to fly with.
Number of Claws
Okay, so this is a really specific detail but I think it's pretty cool. You know how Western dragons have three or four claws on each foot and hand? Well, the number of claws an Eastern dragon has is very meaningful. In China, only the imperial dragon, which represents the emperor himself, has five claws on each leg. All other dragons have four claws or less based on their ranking. So the claw number was a status symbol among dragons! How neat is that?
Breathing Fire or Water?
We all know that Western dragons are famous for breathing fire, right? That's like their most iconic trait, using their fiery breath to scorch everything in their path. Eastern dragons on the other hand don't actually breathe fire. Instead, many myths say they have control over water and rain. This makes sense because in ancient Chinese culture, dragons were seen as rulers of rivers, lakes, and seas. Pretty different from the fire-breathing Western version!
Colors
When you think of a typical Western dragon, what color is it? Probably red, green, black, those kinds of fierce colors, right?
Eastern dragons have a much wider range of colors that each have symbolic meanings. Like an azure blue dragon represents the East and the element of Wood. A yellow dragon is associated with the Center and the Earth element. Even colors like black, white, red, and green dragons all mean different things in Eastern mythology. It's a whole color code system!
Personality Traits
This is one of the biggest differences between Eastern and Western dragons. In stories and movies, Western dragons are usually portrayed as quite aggressive, territorial, and greedy. They love hoarding treasure and inflicting fear on people. Eastern dragons meanwhile are seen as much more benevolent and noble. They are symbols of luck, strength, and wealth in Chinese culture. Instead of being terrifying beasts, many people look up to Eastern dragons as directors of rain and blazing new trails through the skies and seas. They have a much more positive, revered image.
Overall, I just find the differences so fascinating! Western dragons are definitely cooler and scarier-looking, with their muscular bodies, wings, and ability to breathe deadly fire. But Eastern dragons seem to have a deeper cultural meaning and
history behind their serpent-like shapes, claw numbers, water powers, and auspicious colors and personalities.
Personally, I prefer the Western dragons a little more just because they seem more formidable and exciting to me. I mean, who wouldn't want a pet dragon that can torch your enemies? Though I guess having a noble rain dragon watching over crops would be pretty awesome too. Hmm, maybe I'll start collecting Eastern dragon stuff as well! A boy can never have too many dragons.
