Unit 5 The power of nature
教学目标
1. Knowledge objects
1) To know the meanings of the following new words and phrases:diagram,volcano,erupt,eruption,ash, questionnaire,alongside, appoint,database,evaluate,wave,fountain,absolute,absolutely,suit, potential,actual,burn to the ground,make one's way, etc.
2) To learn about volcano eruption and the exciting

1) To develop the students' reading ability by skimming and scanning the passage.
2) To develop the students' speaking ability by talking and discussing.
3. Emotional objects
1) To stimulate students' love to nature.
2) To develop students' sense of cooperative learning.
教学重点
To develop the students’reading ability.
学时难点
To enable the students to talk about natural disasters and their ideal careers.
教学活动
Step 1Warming up
1.Warming up by looking and talking
Teacher asks: On May 12th, 2008, what happened to China? (Students answer)
Teacher asks: Do you know any other natural disasters?
Please work with your partners and make a list of natural disasters(such as earthquake,snowstorm,flood,drought).
Teacher shows the pictures of all kinds of disasters to the students and let them know about the power of nature and talk about them. Purpose of my design:
(1) To catch Ss’attention about all kinds of disasters and the power of nature.
(2) To developSs’interest in volcanoes.
2. Teacher asks:
Do you know how a volcano erupts?
Have you ever seen a volcano?
(students may answer “no”)
Then the teacher plays a period of video about volcano-eruption to help them.
Then encourage students to analyze the volcano diagram.
(Magma chamber, Lava, Crater, Ash cloud/volcanic ash)
Purpose of my design:
To help Ss’learning more about volcano eruption directly by watching the video.
Step 2Pre-reading
1. Teacher asks :
Can you imagine climbing into a live volcano in order to measure the temperature of the boiling rock inside?
Can you imagine doing such dangerous work as part of your job?
2. Let students do a survey to ask one of their friends the questions on
Questionnaire Yes No
1) Do you like working outside as well as inside?
2) Do you enjoy travelling to unusual places?
3) Do you enjoy taking risks?
4) Do you dislike doing the same thing every day?
5)Do you like adventure in your life?
6) Are you interested in studying rocks and other things
that make up the surface of the earth?
the questionnaire to find out if he or she is suitable for the job.
3. Invite some students to report their survey results.
eg. He /She would like/ wouldn’t like to be a volcanologist because...
4. Teacher says: If he /she answered “yes”to all these questions, then volcanologist could be a good career for him/her. Next, we will read the text about an exciting job.
Purpose of my design:
Stimulate Ss’interest in having a better understanding about the exciting job as a volcanologist.
Step 3Reading
1. Skimming
Let the students skim the text to find the main idea of each part, discuss and check their answers with their partners.
Part 1(Para 1-2) a. The writer’s experience of
watching the volcanic eruption
Part 2(Para 3-4) b. The writer’s job and
its importance
Part 3(Para 5) c. The reasons for the writer’s enthusiasm
about his job
2. Scanning
Let the students scan the text for specific information.
