第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)Scientists have found amounts of water molecules inside rocks and soil samples from Mars before. But an ancient meteorite (陨石) found recently contains 10 times more water and much more oxygen than any Martian I meteorite ever before discovered.
What’s so wild about this wet discovery? It could mean that the Red Planet once had enough water to have liquid flowing on the planet’s surface.
It was once believed that if Mars ever had water at all, its water would have been small amounts of ice below the surface or existing in the soil only as hydrogen and oxygen---the elements that make up water. But recent discoveries have shown that Mars probably had a much wetter history than formerly thought.
The meteorite, nicknamed Black Beauty, was found in Africa’s Sahara Desert in 2011. Only about 110 meteorites from Mars have ever been found. Scientists believe most Martian meteorites arrived on our planet during one large asteroid crash (小行星碰撞) that sent rocks falling toward Earth long ago.
Black Beauty is about 2.1 billion years old. Its discovery is the first time scientists have been able to study such an ancient Martian rock. It’s also one of the first times scientists have been able to study a piece of the panel’s ancient surface.
The sample’s water molecules were sent out when scientists heated the meteorite to analyze it. Scientists think the meteorite’s hydrogen and oxygen molecules are so plentiful because water flowing on Mars at the time this meteorite fell to Earth, or because these mo lecules were once sealed in large quantities in Mars’s crust.
Black Beauty might do more than just unlock secrets from the Red Planet’s past. These discoveries could also help scientists understand new data about Mars that’s being sent from the robotic rov ers currently gathering information on the planet.
1、People used to think that .
A.there was little water on Mars B.Mars had a lot of flowing water
C.a large quantity of ice was Mars D.Mars was much wetter than Earth

C.It landed on Earth after an asteroid crash. D.It has a history of 2.1 million years.
3、How did the scientists research Black Beauty?
A.By cutting it into pieces. B.By dipping it into water.
C.By burning it on a fire. D.By burying it into a desert.
4、The passage is mainly about .
A.a rock from the center of Mars. B.a major Martian meteorite discovery
C.a new discovery on the Red Planet D.a number of meteorites from Red Plane

23.(8分)Harry Potter lovers around the world may want to thank Alice Newton. She was eight years old when her father brought home a manuscript for her to read. At the time, he was working for Bloomsbury Publishing.
After reading the manuscript, Alice wrote a note to her father: "The excitement in this book made me feel warm inside," she wrote. "I think it is probably one of the best books an 8 or 9 year old could read."
Based in part on Alice's comments, Bloomsbury went on to publish "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone."
Alice's note to her father is part of the British Library's new exhibition, "Harry Potter: A History of Magic." It celebrates the 20th anniversary of the publication of J.K. Rowling's first book about Harry and his friends at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
When "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" was released in 1997, Bloomsbury sent just 500 copies to stores in Britain and another 500 copies to British libraries.
Now, Harry and his friends are known worldwide.
The exhibit at the British Library in February includes Rowling's outline for her books, her artwork of its characters and a map of the Hogwarts School. It also includes early versions of Rowling's books that were rejected by other publishers.
The show has two rooms. They are divided up based on the subjects offered at Hogwarts. Areas include Potions, Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures and Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Each area describes the stories and beliefs that Rowling included in her books.
Included in the exhibition are discussions of alchemy, the European traditions that led to modern chemistry, and the Ripley Scroll--a six-meter-long document from the 1500s. It describes how to make a Philosopher's Stone.
The British Library has already sold about 30,000 tickets to the exhibit—the most advance tickets ever sold for a British Library exhibition.
The show closes on February 28, 2018. It will then travel to New York for the 20th anniversary of the release of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," the book's title in the United States.

24.(8分)It is not only praise or punishment that determines a child’s level of confide nce. There are some other important ways we shape our kids—particularly by giving instructions and commands in a negative or positive choice of words. For example, we can say to a child “Don’t run into traffic!” or “Stay on the footpath close to me.” In using the latter, you will be helping your kids to think and act positively, and to feel competent in a wide range of situation, because they know what to do, and aren’t scaring themselves about what not to do.
Actually, it is all in the way the human mind works. What we think, we automatically rehearse. For example, if someone offered you a million dollars not to think of a blue monkey for two minutes, you wouldn’t be able to do it. When a child is told “Don’t fall off the tree,” he will think of two things:“don’t” and “fall off the tree”. That is, he will automatically create the picture of falling off the tree in his mind. A child who is vividly imagining falling off the tree is much more likely to fall off. So it is far better to use “Hold on to the tree carefully.”
Clearly, positive instructions help kids to understand the right way to do things. Kids do not always know how to be safe, or how to react to the warning of the danger in negative words. So parents should make their commands positive. “Sam, hold on firm to the side of the boat” is much more useful than “Don’t you dare to fall out of the boat?” or worse still “How do you think I’ll feel if you drown?” The changes are small but difference is obvious.
Children learn how to guide and organize themselves from the way we guide them with our words, so it pays to be positive.
1、Positive choice of words helps kids to ______.
A.do things carefully B.learn in different situations
C.improve their imagination D.build up their confidence
2、What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.One can’t help imagining what is heard.
B.A child will act on what is instructed.
C.A child will fall off the tree when told not to.
D.One won’t think of a blue monkey when given money.
3、Which of the following commands helps kids to be safe?
A.Fasten your seat belt.
B.Don’t play by the lake.
C.How do you think I’ll feel if you get hurt?
D.Don’t you dare to walk through the red light?
4、The main idea of the passage is that ______.
A.praise makes kids confident B.right instructions keep kids safe
C.positive instructions guide kids D.clear commands make kids different
25.(10分)A sunflower is a sunflower. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment? As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury it in a garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower.
A biodegradable (生物所能分解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage consumers to recycle.
Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and is able to change shape. Over time it can also break down into the soil without giving out any poisonous chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms fertilizers. These feed the seed and help the flower grow.
Engineers have designed a small transparent (透明的) window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is throw n away. “We’ve only put sunflower seeds into the covers so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which f lowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time.” said one scientist.
As phone technology is developing so quickly, people are constantly throwing their mobiles away. This means manufacturers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be throw n away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can offer some relief for nature, according to the scientists.
“The seed comes out and the flower grows in the pot so you don’t have to concern yourself with the phone when you have finished using it,” said Kerry Kirw an. She leads the research team, which is based at the University of Warw ick in Britain.
1、What is the purpose of this passage?
A.To tell the popularity of biodegradable cell phones.
B.To discuss the development of the cell phone technology.
C.To persuade the readers to buy the biodegradable cell phone.
D.To introduce an environmental-friendly cell phone to readers.
2、Which of the following is TRUE about the cover of the new type of phone?
A.It can turn into useful fertilizer for the sunflower seeds.
B.It can hardly serve as the storage for the sunflower seed.
C.It may give out poisonous chemicals when breaking down.
D.It may make the seed grow after the phone is throw n away.
3、What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The new type of mobile phone will sell extremely well.
B.The new type of mobile phone is already on the market.
C.Other flowers may be used in the new type of cell phone.
D.Mobile phone is increasingly important to the environment.
4、The most suitable title for this passage might be “”.
A.Design a Phone B.Help the Sunflower to grow
C.Protec t Our Environment D.Plant Your Phone

I am exceedingly delighted to hear from you. You asked me in your last letter about the physical exercise in our school and the following information may give you a rough sketch.
To begin with, a fabulous new stadium has been built up, which has become the new landmark in our school. Moreover, with the stadium set up, a wide range of sports events are able to be held, of which ping-pong, football as well as running competitions enjoy great popularity. As for me, I’m intoxicated with basketball since it has been giving me strength to confront the challenges in my life.
All in all, I sincerely invite you to come to our school and see for yourself.
Yours,
Li Hua。
