I was traveling alone through the UK. To reach places that were off the public transportation map, I bought an old car, which cost most of my money. I couldn't afford to stay in the hotel, so I had to camp in my car for the rest of the trip.
One morning I awoke in my old car on a country road in Ireland and saw a single house. The water in my thermos(保温瓶) had gone cold, so I knocked on the door of the house. A woman opened it. I asked her for some hot water. But she wouldn't let me get away with just that! I was invited indoors. She asked me to sit at the table and have breakfast with her family. They filled my thermos before I left.
I was greatly moved. And I decided to pass the kindness on. The other day I met a young man who had been driving around to look for a parking lot. He looked increasingly upset. I was glad that I was able to point one out to him. His thankful smile was the hugest reward(奖赏) for me.

A scientist named Charles had a strange idea. He wanted to invent a new kind of car which could go without a driver. It could also be used at a living room. That means you can go anywhere on your sofa in the car. You might say that it's impossible. But Charles succeeded in making it in a factory and named it Tridika.
Tridika has no wheels and it starts working when it reaches the magnetic levitation tracks(磁悬浮轨道). It takes its energy from the tracks. And it works in the same way as a magnetic train. It moves very fast. As everyone knows, cities are developing rapidly. There are more and more cars running on the road. So parking space is limited. Sometimes it's hard to find a place to park(停车). Tridika can solve this problem easily because it needn't park on the ground. Actually, it can park on the outside wall of the building with the help of an elevator system(电梯系统). In this way, much parking space can be saved. When Tridika parks itself in front of your apartment, you can get into your room directly. Of course, there must be a side door in the outside wall. Then Tridika becomes another living room. It's really amazing, isn't it?
Tridika can hold six passengers. So you can go on vacation in it with your family in your free time. Of course it can also be used at an office while you are traveling on the road. That is to say, you can travel and work at the same time.
( )16.Who invented the new kind of car?
A.Charles. B.A driver.
C.A factory worker.

B.Tridika: A fast magnetic train
C.Tridika: A strange side door

On Saturday morning, every boy in town was happy, except Tom Sawyer. Tom's aunt said he had to paint the fence (围栏). It was thirty yards long and three yards high! When he was working, some boys came along and made fun of him.
Ben was the first one that came happily with an apple in his hand.

"Well, all right, Ben ,〞 said Tom. "But you must be careful.〞
He gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his heart. He started to eat Ben's apple.
All day, boys passed by and wanted to paint. When Ben got tired, Billy began to paint. He gave Tom his favorite kite. Then Johnny gave him twelve marbles (玻璃球), and so on.

Have you ever got your lunch, but not known where to sit? You don't want to sit alone. But you are not sure who would be friendly and let you sit with them.
To solve the problem, Natalie Hampton, 16, made an app called Sit With Us. It makes finding friends in the school canteen(食堂) very easy. Natalie is from Sherman Oaks, California, the US.
The free app went online on Sep.9. Students can sign up as "ambassadors〞(大使) for a club. Then they can post "open lunch〞 events to invite others to join in.
Natalie got the idea to create the app after she ate alone her whole seventh grade year. The experience made her feel sad and she was even bullied(欺负). She changed schools because of that.
People may want to know why you don't just ask to sit down. Natalie said the app stops kids from being rejected in front of others. "This way it's very private. It's through the phone. No one else has to know. And you know that you're not going to the table ,〞 she told NPR.

An Activity for Reading
By: CCTV Department of Education
This activity is developed by reading experts for you to use with children. Doing
the activity with your children helps you develop their reading skills while having
fun at the same time. If the reader finishes one book and asks for another, you know
you are succeeding!
We wish you spend wonderful hours of reading with children! This summer holiday,
we will invite some families to the program Readers to read aloud poems or books
you like, and share your reading experience.
Activity: Read to Me
It's important to read to your children, but equally important to listen to them
read to you.
What you'll need: Books at your child's reading level
What to do:
▲Read good books to your child. Parents who read aloud to their children are
developing their interests and skills in reading. Encourage your children to listen,
express their ideas, and ask questions.
▲T ake turns. You read a paragraph and let your child read the next one. If your
child becomes easier with reading aloud, you can ask him or her to read a full page.
▲Listen carefully as your child reads. Listening to your child will encourage him
or her to practice reading. Besides, this is another way to enjoy reading together.
▲If your child has trouble reading words, you can help him or her in some ways:
·Ask the child to jump over the word and read the rest, then try to guess the meaning
of the missing word.
·Guide your child to use what he or she knows about letter sounds.
·Tell your child that you are proud of his or her hard working.

Dear Sunday Globe ,
I am writing to tell you about your article Smartphones Make Life Easier in last Sunday's newspaper. You did an excellent job explaining the good points of smartphones, but you didn't talk about their bad points at all. So, I hope you'll let me give your readers some advice on smartphone etiquette(礼仪).The first point I'd like to address is loudness. When you talk on your smartphone in public, please don't shout. In fact, the microphones in smartphones are very sensitive(灵敏的). So, you can be heard even if you speak quietly.
Another point is about personal space. I don't think it is polite to make calls in small spaces full of people. This makes others uncomfortable and forces them to listen to your personal business. What's worse, it stops many facetoface conversations from ever beginning.
Lastly, doing two things at the same time is dangerous. For example, making calls while driving is a bad habit. Pay attention to the road! Similarly, when staying with your friends, turn off your smartphone and enjoy their company.
Yours truly ,

Ⅱ.阅读理解
A
I'm not the kind of mother who often combs her daughter's hair, and my daughter has never liked sitting quietly long enough for me to do it.
But today, I took a chair outside and let my daughter Kitty sit on it. She was sitting high with her eyes closed, her skin still wet from the shower and her messy hair behind her back. I realized she was taking_in every touch from my hands. Today I would send Kitty away for a week of summer camp. This was all my idea. She's nearly 12, and I notice that I'm with my child nearly 24 hours a day. Living on the farm without neighbors, Kitty has become increasingly dependent(依赖的) on me.
After lunch, we drove to the camp place. After we got out of the car, we were introduced to the other children. Kitty followed me closely, holding my hand all the time. "I need you for a few more minutes ,〞she said to me, horror in her eyes.
I pulled away and walked up to a camp worker. "Excuse me ,〞 I said loudly. "I'd like to introduce you to my daughter. Maybe you could help her meet a few of these kids.〞 He came over to talk to Kitty and I kissed on her face. Then I disappeared before Kitty realized I had left.
On my way home, I felt a piece of my soul(灵魂) had been taken away from my body. I began to shake. Tears came down my face. When I arrived home, I calmed down and reminded myself why I chose this path. "I want Kitty to have a chance to find herself, out of my shadow(影子). If I don't set her free, I'm afraid she won't be independent(独立的) forever ,〞 I said to myself.
( )11.How long would the camp last?
A.5 days. B.7 days. C.12 days.
( )12.What does the underlined phrase "taking in〞 mean in Paragraph 2?。
