Color words in English
Abstract:Color words are widely used in languages. This article is talk about how color words used in English, and have listed out some examples such as red, green, blue and so on.
Since human beings could see a colorful world by birth, we could see that color words are widely used in our daily dialogues. There are also much color words uses in English, I will use some color words for example to show how important the color words are.
Red: In English, red is not only express happiness and good things, but also means something bad or embarrassment. In English, a “red-letter day”means a memorable day and “the red carpet” means a grand welcome.But “running a business in the red” doesn’t means a good business, it means lose money in business. And “the red-light district” is a district with many brothels, “to become red-faced” means feel shame or embarrass.
Green: Green is not as positive as it looks in English. “green-eye” means envy and green also express new comers in office, young and without enough experience at work. “greenhorn” means the guy who are easy to get the shaft. “green fingers” is the guys who knows how to be a good gardener.
Black: blacklist，black market，black-hearted, a black day, a black sheep…all of the words shows that black means bad and terrible in English, they also consider that a black cat means bad luck. However, “in the black” means profit in business and “be in the black” is the antonym of “be in the red”. Isn’t it very interesting?
Blue: In English, “a blue mood” and “have the blues” means feel depressed in mind and “blue Monday” is a dispirited day because after a happy weekend, Monday often make us feel upset. But blue is not also means bad mind and depressed, it also have good meanings: a “blue blood” is an aristocratic guy, and “a blue ribbon” means the first prize.
Through learning English, I found that color word used in languages are very interesting, therefore, I write it down and share it with you, I’m a blue hand in English article writing, what I can do is just write down the phenomenon which I found interesting and try my best express my opinion, but I like it, I will work harder and enjoy myself in it.
