21.(6分) A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women’s shoes.
Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.
A San Francisco start-up company called Roth y’s, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company’s co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women’s feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe’s outer part, called the sole (鞋底). This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.
Rothy’s shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that d emand. “We’re not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled materials to make other products.
For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.

23.(8分)Like a lot of health-care professionals, Dr. Brian Goldman finds it extremely difficult to draw boundaries between his work and personal lives. “There’s this view that you should suck it up and do one more thing,” says the ER physician and host of CBC’s White Coat, Black Art. But that “one more thing” often comes at Goldman’s expense.
“You’re exhausted and a patient or their family look at you with begging eyes,” he says. “So you have this dilemma: say that your shift is over or give until you’re totally spent?” Goldman’s work stress combined with family tension after his mother was diagnosed with dementia 20 years ago. Caring for her over a decade was difficult, as was dealing with his father’s grief. “When someone else is drowning you, you have to grab a life preserver and save yourself,” says Goldman.
Setting boundaries isn’t just important for busy professionals; everyone can benefit fro m managing situations that cause undue stress or pain. Here are some tips.
First, “If someone’s behavior makes you unhappy --- and it could be anything from the way they speak to you to repeatedly failing to stick to their promise --- then there’s room to set limits,” says Patrick Keelan, a Calgary psychologist. We often avoid setting limits because we prioritize the happiness and comfort of others over ours. In order to control t hi s im pul se, Goldman suggests framing the development of boundaries as a form of self-kindness. When facing an overwhelming situation like the one he was in with his father, Goldman suggests reflecting on what is making you feel uncomfortable, unhappy or unappreciated. “You can’t relate to others or be kind to others if you aren’t kind to yourself,” he says.
Second, once you’ve become aware of your needs, setting and maintaining boundaries requir es clear verbal communication. There are three obstacles to enforcing boundaries in a relationship: fear, guilt and self-doubt, says psychologist Nicole MaCance. We often fear that if we set limits, the other person will reject us, or we feel bad claiming our needs. Keelan proposes setting ground rules before relationships become tense. Start by cooperatively listing values --- like mutual respect, support, and loyalty --- and then building the guidelines from these values. If you’re struggling to reach a consensus, Keelan recommends engaging a third party, such as a therapist, to help.
Now, if you want a boundary to stick to, you can’t enable someone in breaking it. As such, it’s crucial to establish consequences for transgressions ( 越轨). Otherwise, McMance says, “you’re giving them permission to violate
that boundary.” If they won’t respect your boundaries, you have to do some soul- searching about the value of the relationship. “When you feel bad more than you feel good in this person’s presence, and when the relationship is impacting your self-worth and happiness, it’s time to reassess,” says McCance. Saying no is hard, but she sug gests framing it as saying yes to healthier relationships. “We’re all better mothers and partners and brothers when we have boundaries.”
1、What do we know about Goldman?
A.He is in need of support in his work.
B.He is caught between his work and life.
C.He slides into the state of desperation.
D.He always puts his family at the first place.
2、What do the underlined words “this impulse” refer to?
A.prioritizing others’ happiness B.avoiding setting limits
C.failing to stick to their promise D.framing the development of boundaries
3、What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Do communicate. B.Do not cross.
C.Identify your limits. D.Say no and mean it.

25.(10分)When I was three years old, I couldn't speak. It was a strange reality that none of the doctors I visited could understand.
One day, I was shadowing(跟随)my mother. She found herself looking in a mirror, and through it our eyes met. She began to speak to me through the reflection, and I slowly began to mimic(模仿)her mouth's movements until I formed a word.
It turned out I'm deaf in my left ear, and have a slight problem in my right. Being hard of hearing has been difficult, but I've never lived in a state of self-hating sorrow. Imagine being able to shut out all sound as you lay your head down to sleep by simply rolling over onto one side. That's my reality when I sleep on my "good ear", and it makes me feel like a superhero sometimes.
People call my deaf side my "bad ear", but when I wear my hearing aid, I have access to a range of features that some other deaf people don't. In cinemas, for example, with one click of a button I can enjoy a whole film as though it were whispered to me from the mouths of the actors.
Owning a hearing aid hasn't always felt good, however. On the first day I got my aid, when I was eight, I took it to school for show-and-tell. As I explained how it worked to my classmates, a boy yelled out, "Aren't those for old men?"
At that moment, I felt different. It took a long time for me to get over that sense of being so unlike my peers.
But it's not just school kids who can make us deaf and hard-of-hearing people feel like burdens. Every video on social media that lacks subtitles(字幕), for example, means an entire community of deaf people is unable to enjoy it. Completely deaf people are excluded from enjoying many movies too, as subtitles in cinemas are almost impossible to find.
And with hearing aids costing around $2,500 each, it can be hard for many people to afford to be able to listen to the things that others take for granted. As for me, I can listen to music, enjoy films, and catch conversations - I'm lucky. I'm deaf, but I can still hear everything. I've been blessed with wonderful life experiences, and I am human. And when it comes to sleeping, I'm even superhuman.
1、How does the author view his hearing difficulty?
A.It's a disaster and causes him a lot of trouble.
B.It gave him a chance to experience something special.
C.It made him feel embarrassed in front of his classmates.
D.It helped him to live in his own world without being interrupted.
2、What can be inferred from the passage about the author?
A.He was born deaf.
B.He is optimistic and helpful.
C.His family and classmates have supported him a lot.
D.The hearing aid brings much convenience to his daily life.
3、What is the author's attitude toward his life?
A.grateful. B.anxious.
C.excited. D.disappointed.
4、What is the author's main purpose in writing the article?
A.To give advice on life to disabled people.
B.To show how difficult life is for disabled people.
C.To share his experience of treating a disadvantage with gratitude.
D.To show the convenience a hearing aid could bring.

29、Dear Peter,
Having known that you are interested in our school art festival about traditional Chinese culture, I am writing to offer you some detailed information.
This art festival falls in every December at our campus, aiming to enrich our school life and arouse our awareness of carrying forward the precious traditional Chinese culture.
Sponsored by our Students’ Union, the festival covers a wide variety of activities, among which I pay special attention to the Chinese poetry competition, since I hold the belief that one filled with knowledge always behaves with elegance. Poem lovers read, recite seas of poems that they love and exchange their perspectives on poetry.
Why not come and enjoy the strong atmosphere of our festival at the very beginning of December? Your involvement will be warmly welcomed.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
