14、If you go to an American middle school on Wednesday morning, you will hear kids talking about the American
idol(美国偶像)show from the night before. Some have called it the most influential show in the history of television. American Idol has been extremely successful in the country since 2002. The show was number one for six years! The most popular episode(剧集)had nearly 38 millionviewers. But why is the show so popular?
The idea of the show is this: everyday people get a chance to show their singing talents to the world and become an “American Idol”, a famous pop star. Anyone in the country(between the ages of 15 and 28) can have a try—a chance of becoming world famous.
In fact, everyday people are the ones who are allowed on the show. If you are a professional singer—you cannot be an American Idol. The winners are regular people from small towns—people who sang in churches or bars(酒吧)but had bigger dreams.
The winners of the contest don’t get a prize of money. Instead, they get to record an album. Famous stars such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood gained fame(获得名声) from winning the show. So, it seems the contest really works. It is the idea that anyone can be a super star that draws people to this program. All those hours of practicing in front of
the mirror could lead to fame and fortune(财富).Even you could be the next “American Idol”.根据材料内容选择最佳答案,将其标号填入题前括号内。

17、When you were at school, the last thing you probably wanted to do was spend your weekends going to work. There was homework to do, sport to play and fun to be had. But our parents probably advise us to find a job to make some pocket money and get some life experience. When I was a teenager I had a paper round: delivering newspapers to people's homes. I then turned to a Saturday job in a supermarket: putting the things on the shelves in order and working at the checkout.
Today in the UK you are allowed to work from the age of 13, and many children take up part-time jobs. It's a taste of independence. Teenagers agree that it teaches valuable lessons about working with adults and about managing your money. So, that's no bad thing!
Some research has shown that not taking on a Saturday or holiday job could be detrimental to a person later. A 2015 study by the UK Commission on Employment and Skills found that employer's(雇主)organizations criticized
young adults because they were ill-prepared for full time work. And they were proved not having taken part-time work at school age. However, a recent report has shown that the number of school children in the UK with a part-time job has fallen by 20% in the past five years.
So, does this mean that British teenagers are now more afraid of hard work? Probably not. Some experts feel that young people think going out to work will influence their performance at school, and they are under more pressure now to study hard and get good exam results---and a good job in the long term. However, Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told BBC News that "Proper part-time work is a good way to help young people learn skills that they will need in their working lives." It's all about getting the right balance between doing
part-time work and having enough time to study and rest.
Many young people actually want to work because it gives them a sense of freedom. One 13-year-old girl called Rachel, who has a Saturday job in a shop, told the BBC that "I enjoy my job because I'm making money and it helps my confidence speaking to people and socializing with people I work with." That seems like something worth getting up for on a Saturday morning. Did you do a part-time job when you were at school?
1.According to the passage, teenagers probably prefer on the weekend.
A.doing homework to having fun with friends
B.playing sports outside to doing homework at home
C.having fun with their parents to playing sports outside
D.playing sports to delivering newspapers to people's homes
2.What does the word "detrimental" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Harmful. B.Impossible. C.Important. D.Worthy.
3.According to the passage, Geoff Barton probably agrees that .
A.Teenagers like taking part-time jobs more than full-time jobs.
B.doing part-time jobs is more important than studying and resting.
C.taking up part-time jobs benefits teenagers' future working lives.
D.teenagers are under more pressure now to study hard and get good grades.
4.What's the writer's main purpose in writing the passage?
A.To call people's attention to the school children
B.To Criticize school children are out of control
C.To show school children dislike part-time jobs
D.To encourage school children to take part-time jobs

18、Last summer I went through a training program and became a literacy volunteer (扫盲志愿者). The training I received, though excellent, didn't tell me how it was to work with a real student, however. When I began to discover what other people’s lives were like because they could not read, I realized the true importance of reading.
My first student Marie was a 44-year-old single mother of three children. In the first lesson, I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn't know which bus to take. When I told her I would get her a bus schedule, she told me it would not help because she couldn't read it. She said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket because she couldn't always remember what she needed. Also, she could only recognize items by sight, so if the product had a different label, she would not recognize it as the product she wanted.
As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie’s self-confidence. She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarket. After this successful trip, she reported how self-confident she felt. At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son, Tony, a shy first grader, with his reading. I found that helping Marie to build her self-confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before.
As a literacy volunteer, I learned a great deal about teaching and helping others. In fact, I may have learned more from the experience than Marie did.
1.What did the writer do last summer?
A.She worked in the supermarket.
B.She helped someone to learn to read.
C.She helped some single mothers.
D.She was trained by a literacy volunteer.
2.Why didn't Marie go to the supermarket by bus at first?
A.Because she liked to walk to the supermarket.
B.Because she didn't have a bus schedule.
C.Because she couldn't afford the bus ticket.
D.Because she couldn't find the right bus.
3.How did Marie use to find the goods she wanted in the supermarket?
A.She knew where the goods were in the supermarket.
B.She asked others to take her to the right place.
C.She managed to find the goods by their looks.
D.She remembered the names of the goods.
4.Which of the statements is TRUE about Marie?
A.She could do many things she had not been able to before.
B.She was able to read stories with the help of her son.
C.She decided to continue her studies in school.
D.She helped to build up my self-confidence.

19、Dear Editor,
I read the stories on BBC World Have Y our Say today. I am interested in Mike's story, because I had the same experience when I traveled in Guangzhou. I can't stand bad manners in public, either. In fact, I really get angry when people jump the queen and smoke in non-smoking areas. I think it's wrong to break the rules in public. In my opinion, we should know more about good manners. On the other hand, we had better stop people around us from being rude. If we can't stop them, we can always ask the police or someone like that for help.
Yours,。
