With more self-confidence comes more praise from teachers and classmates. I have gone from “43 ” in the back of the classroom and not wanting to call attention to myself, 44 raising my hand — even when I sometimes wasn’t and not 100 percent sure I had the right answer. Now I have more self-confidence in myself.

Jane Austen(1775-1817),an English novelist, started writing young and completed six novels in her life. Today Austen’s books are more popular than ever. In the last 10 years, five of her six novels have been made into Hollywood films, while her books continue to be best-sellers.
Richard Jenkyns, a professor of English at Oxford University, says that her novels are about marriage, friendships and the family, which are still with us today. “The stories are timeless,” Jenkyns said.
Pride and Prejudice(偏见)(1813) is A usten’s most famous work. It is a love story about Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. At first, these two dislike each other. Elizabeth is pretty, smart and lively. She is proud because Darcy doesn’t know about her family. Mr. Darcy is handsome, rich and has a better family background. So, he is proud as well. At the same time, Darcy holds a prejudice against the Bennet family. He has no understanding of why the family, especially its mother and daughters should try so hard to find rich and powerful husbands. He thinks they are vulgar. Anyway, Elizabeth and Darcy finally fall in love and become a romantic couple but their families don’t want them to.
In Pride and Prejudice, some of the main things that Jane Austen wants to teach people are as follows. Opposites can attract each other. Lovers should not only make each other feel relaxed or comfortable, but also educate and improve each other.
Austen is often called the greatest romantic writer, so it is surprising she remained unmarried. ‘Maybe she was too roman tic, waiting for the perfect man,” Jenkyns says.

People li ke to tell me rubbish. Not just friends, but strangers, too.
Once, at the airport, my husband stepped off an escalator(自动扶梯) before me. When he realized I wasn’t with him, he looked back and saw me hugging (拥抱) a stranger.
I’d asked the man behind me: “Did you have fun in Vegas?”
His answer broke me heart. After 50 years away, I’d come to say goodbye to the lover of his life, who was dying of cancer.
“I should have married her 50 years ago,” he said. I hugged him, and then he was gone.
Moments later, my husband sa id: “He told you all that on the escalator?” I nodded.
“Maybe he just needed to tell somebody, And I happened to ask.”
When someone wants to talk, you just need to ask a question. The words don’t matter. It’s the tone (语调) in your voice and the look in your eyes and the caring in your heart that count.
Sometimes I think the whole world is crying out to be heard.
And yet, we don’t ask the question or say the things we need to say to those who matter most to us while there is still time, and a chance, to do so.
Recently I heard from a reader who shared with me the eulogy(悼词) she’d wri tten after losing her mother. I wish her mother could have read it. I can only hope her mother knew all the things her daughter wrote about her—that she was known so well and loved so much.
I like to think people will say a few nice things about me when I’m gone. But given a choice, I would rather hear those things before I go. Wouldn’t we all?
That started me thinking. I need to tell my children I am proud of them. They know it, but it can’t hurt to say it again.
I need to tell my sister I will forever in her debt(欠她的情). I was the one who left. She was the one who stayed, who’s “been there” for our family—for our mother, our dad, our brothers and me.
And to my husband, I need to say, well, he puts up with a lot.
In fact, I need to say a lot of things to whole lot of people. Maybe you do, too. You can tell me, if you want. But maybe you should tell them first.
51. What happened to the writer at the airport in Los Vegas?
A. She developed a friendship with a stranger.
B. She helped a stranger with cancer on the escala tor.
C. She listened to a stranger’s story and hugged him.
D. She told a stranger the story of her stay in Los Vegas
52. According to the writer, what matters least when someone wants to talk?
A. The question you ask.
B. The way you speak.
C. The way you look at someone.
D. The caring in your heart.
53. What does the writer want to tell us with the article?
A. It’s neve r too late to express your love.
B. It’s better to say what you need to say before it’s too late.
C. We should care about strangers to make the world better.
D. We should be careful about what we say to our beloved one s.
D
Making a decision is never easy. You spend a lot of time weighing costs and benefits ( 获益). But you have to pick one.
Now, a group of Canadian scientists say that a tiny area of our brains, called the lateral habenula (外侧缰核), may be to “blame (责怪)” for the difficulty of decisions.
The lateral habenula is one of the smallest parts of the brain. Yet, the research has found that
this brain area is connected to depression (抑郁). When scientists turned it off in a patient’s brain, the patient seemed to be happier.
However, the new study might have made this more difficult to understand.
In the new study, scientists trained rats to pick between two choices – receiving one piece of food regularly or four pieces less often.
They choose the four pieces when they didn’t have to wait t oo long to receive them. But they picked the single piece as the waiting time increased. This means that rats also have the ability to weigh costs and benefits, just like humans.
Scientists then turned off the lateral habenula in the rats’ brains. When t hey did this, the rats started making choices randomly. It seemed that they had no idea which choice might be better for them.
“This finding shows how the brain works when making important decisions,” said Professor Stan Floresco of University of British Columbia, Canada, to Science Daily. These decisions include choosing between job offers or which house to buy.
It also helps to clear up scientists’ misunderstanding about the lateral habenula’s function
(作用). When this area is shut off, patients with depression seem to feel better, but that might not
be because they feel happier. “They may simply no longer care as much about what is making them feel depressed.” said Floresco.
54. We can tell from the first two paragraphs that _______.
A. most people don’t like making decisions or choices
B. it’s good to weigh costs and benefits before making decisions
C. it’s unnecessary to blame people who are unable to make decisions
D. scientists may have found out why it’s sometimes hard for us to make decisio ns
55. Which of these followings about lateral habenula is TRUE?
A. It has more than one function.
B. It’s a newly discovered part of the brain.
C. It used to be thought of as useless.
D. It’s one of the largest parts of the brain.
56. The underlined word “randomly” in Paragraph 7 probably means _______.
A. repeatedly
B. without a good result
C. without a normal pattern (正常模式)
D. regularly
57. What might people do if their lateral habenula is shut down?
A. They might make decisions without thinking much.
B. They might feel more depressed than before.
C. They might care more about other people.
D. They might have a better ability to weigh costs and benefits.
