The 3rd International String Competition in Hong Kong
The International String Competition in Hong Kong is a biennial music event that has been held in the city since 2016. The competition brings together talented young musicians from all over the world to showcase their skills and compete for top prizes in various categories of stringed instruments, including violin, viola, cello and double bass.
The Third International String Competition in Hong Kong was held from August 11th to August 21st, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition was held entirely online, with participants and judges connecting virtually from around the world.
A total of 237 musicians from 42 countries and regions participated in the competition this year. The participants
ranged in age from 12 to 32 years old, and each musician performed a program of pieces selected by the judges.
The competition was divided into three rounds. In the
first round, each participant submitted a video recording of their performance. The judges then reviewed the recordings and selected 60 musicians to advance to the second round.
In the second round, the 60 remaining participants submitted a second video recording. The judges then selected 24 musicians to advance to the final round.
The final round of the competition was held live, with each of the 24 finalists participating in a virtual performance. The competition was judged by a panel of internationally renowned musicians and music educators.
After an intense week of competition, the winners were announced on August 21st. The top prizes were awarded in each category, as well as awards for the best interpretation of a specified piece and the most promising young musician.
The winners of the Third International String Competition in Hong Kong were:
Violin category:
- First prize: Noemie Raymond-Friset (France)
- Second prize: Katharina Alich (Germany)
- Third prize: Shuichi Okada (Japan)
Viola category:
- First prize: Wonhee Bae (South Korea)
- Second prize: Nils Mönkemeyer (Germany)
- Third prize: Eunice Kim (South Korea)
Cello category:
- First prize: Alexander Buzlov (Russia)
- Second prize: Hee-Young Lim (South Korea)
- Third prize: JeongHyoun Christine Lee (South Korea)
Double Bass category:
- First prize: Ross Penner (USA)
- Second prize: Yoshiki Takemoto (Japan)
- Third prize: Peter Kibbe (USA)
Best Interpretation of a Specified Piece:
- Amy Zhan (USA)
Most Promising Young Musician:
- Momo Wong (Hong Kong)
The Third International String Competition in Hong Kong was a great success, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The online format allowed for a truly global competition, with musicians from all over the world participating and showcasing their talents. The winners of the competition are sure to go on to achieve great success in their music careers, and we look forward to seeing many more
