And with those flowers comes May Day, a holiday that most people have heard of but have no idea what it’s forMay Day, celebrated on May 1 every year, has its roots in ancient pagan(异教徒的)festivals marking a new start of a new season——summer. Over the centuries, it developed and took on a more non-religious nature In Europe, including the addition of maypole dances that the holiday is now associated with. But May Day isn’t all about skipping around with ribbons in the sunshine. It has also been on the same day as International Workers' Day since the 1880s. In fact, May Day refers to America's Labor Day for certain countries. On May 1, 1886, hundreds of thousands of U. S. industrial workers participated in a nationwide strike to demand an 8-hour workday. The protests in Chicago lasted for several days, and on May 3, a strike at McCormick Reaper Works ended in a brawl with police officers. Several strikers were wounded or killed. The next night, the violence became even worse. When police came to break up a crowd of protestors gathered in Hay-market Square, a bomb went off in the police ranks. The bomb killed seven policemen and wounded 60 more. Police then opened fire on the crowd, killing several men and wounding 200.In memory of these events, the International Socialist Conference declared May 1 as an international holiday for labor. That’s why the world sees not only celebrations of warmer weather on the first day of May, but oftentimes marches for labor unions as well29. What does the text mainly talk about?A. Why people celebrate May Day.B. How May Day came into existenceC. Activities held to celebrate May Day4/ 15D. Ways to honor May Day worldwide30. It can be known from the text that _________A. all festivals were closely related to religionB. celebrations on May Day caused many deathsC. 19th-century workers had a longer workday than eight hoursD. International Workers' Day has no connection with Americas Labor DayDWhenever we see a button on a doorbell or on a remote, we may press it. This is true in most cases. But some buttons are actually fake(假的),like the“ close"button on an elevator. Many people are in the habit of pressing the "close" button because they don’t have the patience to wait for the elevator doors to shut. But according to experts, the buttons are a complete trick- the doors will not close any faster however hard you pressIt started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed, making sure that all elevators stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter. Only firefighters and maintenance workers(维修工) can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys. But to normal elevator riders, the buttons aren't completely useless.According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control. Experts have showed that a lot of buttons that don't do anything exist in our lives5/ 15for this same purpose. For example, pedestrian crosswalk buttons don't live up to their names. Pressing them used to help make the traffic signals change faster, but that was before computer-controlled traffic signals were introduced. But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little "white lies". They still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effortThat habit is here to stay, John Kounios, a psychology professor at Drexel University in the US, told The New York Times. “After all, I’ve got nothing else to do while wait ing. So why not try the chance?”33. The author writes the text to______________A. analyze what roles fake buttons playB. inform readers of kinds of fake buttonS explore different ways to push buttonsD. explain why fake buttons were introduced34. The underlined “for this same purpose " in Paragraph 4 probably refers to_____________.A. making people more patentB. improving people 's bad moodC. offering people a sense of controlD. helping people build up confidence35. What can we know from Joh n Kounios’ words?ping people build up confidenceA.Pressing fake buttons is of no meaning at allB. People don't know that what they press is fakeC. Some people press fake buttons Just to kill timeD. People are supposed to quit Pressing fake buttons第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)6/ 15根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Three months ago, my friends and I planned a trip to spend six days there. The moment I landed at Dubai Airport, I was surprised by the blue sky and good service. After that, we decided to have a rest, so we went to the hotel, which is called Flora Park. The second day was all about shopping. We went to the Dubai Mall, which is the biggest mall in the city. The price of many goods there is lower than in China because it is a free port. I went to some popular entertainment parks and restaurants the last day. It was surprising to see that Dubai has so many trees, as it is a city built in the desert.I have visited a lot of cities in the world, but I still consider Dubai my favourite one.。

A new “paparazzi-proof” scarf could be a game-changer forcreation of Dutch-born fashion entrepreneur Saif Siddiqui and is designed to “give people their right to privacy back”. A host of celebrities including Cameron Diaz, singer Joe Jonas, Bayern Munich footballer Jerome Boateng and music producer Major Lazer have worn the ISHU after it was spotted at London Fashion Week last year.It works by reflecting the light back into a camera, effectively becoming “invisibility clothes” for celebrities who don’t want their photos taken. Anyone wearing the scarf is protected from mobile flash photograph, with the fashion accessory’s f abric (附件结构) effectively blocking out any unwanted pictures, although it doesn’t stop no-flash photographs from being taken. The 28-year-old Siddiqui was inspired while visiting family in Amsterdam in 2009 when his friends attempted to take a photo of him using an iPhone in front of some bikes. “He noticed that the bike’s reflector carried the flash of his mobile camera in a way that confused the faces of his friends in the picture.” the ISHU website explains. “He immediately realized that if developed into the right product, this feature would be an ideal solution for his friends and is now available to the public who want to keep their private moments in public private. “Saif put together a team of experts who dug intothe science of light and reflection, and how to blend technology with fashion.”He told Decoded Magazine: “The ISHU scarf effectively allows an individual to control what pictures and videos are taken of him. “There are no more unwanted pictures and videos on Snapchat, Instagram, or Facebook! Everyone carries a phone with them nowadays that has an amazing camera. So, it all made sense to me.” More ISHU products are set to launch in August, with mobile phone cases set to launch in the next few weeks. That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals who live or work in low levels of light overnight can develop clinical depression. Doctors use the word “clini cal depression” to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide. In the new study American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters (仓鼠) to different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal which means they sleep during the day and are active at night. The animals were divided into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their night-time period. Another group was placed in front of a blue light a third group slept in front of a white light while a fourth was put in front of a red light. After four weeks the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water.Randy Nelson heads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University. He says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. “What we saw is that these animals didn’t show any sleep uneasiness at all but they did mess up biological clock genes and they did show depressive sign while if they were in the dim (微弱) red light they did not.”He notes that photosensitive (感光) cells in the eyes have little to do with eyesight. He says these cells send signals to the area of the brain that controls what has been called the natural sleep-wake cycle. He says there’s a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness.8. Researchers use hamsters in the experiment because __________.A. they are similar to humans in dealing with colorsB. they are easy to observe and studyC. they are sensitive to colors like human beingsD. they are active at night and sleep during the day9. What sign shows that the hamsters are being depressed?A. Their energy level becomes low.B. They don’t sleep well.C. Their eyesight becomes worse.D. They drink less sugary water.10. __________ tends to cause hamsters to be depressed.A. Dim lightB. Blue lightC. Red lightD. Darkness11. What can help people who work late at night to avoid being depressed?A. Equipping their computer screens to put it more in the reddish light.B. Not being exposed to dim red light when using computers.C. Living or working in low levels of light overnight.D. Going to see doctors of clinical depression regularly for help.DBody language is a broad term for several forms of communication using body movements or gestures, instead of, or as a complement to, sounds, verbal language, or other forms of communication. In turn, it is one category of paralanguage, which describes all forms of human communication that are not language.Paralanguage including body language has been extensively studied in social psychology. In everyday speech and popular psychology, the term is most often applied to body language that is thought to be involuntary, but in fact the distinction between voluntary and involuntary body language isoften blurred: a smile or a wave may be given either voluntarily or involuntarily, for example.Voluntary Body Language is less commonly discussed because it seems unproblematic. It refers to movement, gestures and poses intentionally made by the person: smiling, hands, imitating actions, and generally making movements with full or partial intention of making them and a realization of what they communicate. The relation of body language to animal communication has often been discussed. Human paralanguage may represent a continuation of forms of communication that our non-linguistic ancestors already used, or it may be that it has been changed by co-existing language. Some species of animals are especially skilled at detecting human body language, both voluntar y and involuntary: this was the reason for trying to teach the chimpanzee Washoe American Sign Language rather than speech and perhaps the reason why the Washoe project was more successful than some previous efforts to teach apes how to dance.Body language is a product of both genetic and environmental influences. Blind children will smile and laugh even though they have never seen a smile. The ethnologist (文化人类学者) Iraneus Eibl-Eibesfeldt claimed that a number of basic elements of body language were universal across cultures and must therefore be fixed action patterns under instinctive (本能的) control. Some forms of human body language show continuities with communicative gestures of other apes, though often with changes in meaning. More refined gestures, which vary between cultures (for example the gestures to indicate “yes” and “no”), must obviously be learned or modified through learning, usually by unconscious observation of the environment. 12. Which of the following diagrams shows the right relationship__________?① = language ② = paralanguage ③ = body language ④ = verbal languageA. B.C. D.13. According to the passage, the reason why the Washoe project was a success may be that _____.A. the chimpanzee Washoe can be taught speechB. apes can be taught how to danceC. Washoe can understand body language wellD. numbers of basic elements of body language are same in different cultures14. Why does the author take the gestures to indicate “yes” and “no” for an example?A. to give us the meaning of the two gesturesB. to tell us continuities of some fixed action patternsC. to show environmental influences of the sign languageD. to indicate genetic effects of the body language15. The last two paragraphs mainly talk about __________.A. origins of the body languageB. cultural influencesC. what the body language isD. relationships between body languages and animal communications第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

It was August and it was hot. I had to wear a tie to do a survey door by door in this neighbourhood, but I was always refused. I finally caught on and began with “Before you close the door, I am not selling anything and I just need to ask a few questions about yourself and the community”.The young woman inside the doorway stopped for a moment, confused by my rude introduction and finally said, “Sure. Come on in. Don’t mind the mess. It’s hard to keep up with my kids.”“I just need to ask a few questions about yourself and your family. Although this may sound personal, I won’t need to use your names. This information will be used.”She interrupted me. “Would you like a glass of cold water? You look like you’ve had a rough day.”“Why yes!”I said gratefully. Just as she returned with the water, a man came walking in the front door. It was her husband. “Joe, this man is here to do a survey.”I stood and politely introduced myself.“Joe works for the town,”she said. “What do you do?”I asked. She jumped right in not letting him answer. “Joe collects garbage. You know I’m so proud of him.”There was a silence. I didn’t know what to say. I shook my head searching for the right words. “That’s unbelievable! Most people would not be satisfied with a job like that. It certainly is a difficult one. But your attitude about it is amazing.”I said. She walked over to the shelf. As she returned she held a small framed(装裱)paper, walking toward Joe. “I have always been proud of him and always will be. You see I don’t think the job makes the man, but the man makes the job!”she said as she handed me the paper. It said: If a man is called to be a cleaner, he should clean streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, “Here lived a great cleaner who did his job well.”4. She has a positive attitude towards Joe’s job.6. What can we infer from Paragraph 6?A. The Young woman will be with Joe forever.B. The Young woman is proud of her job.C. Any job can be done better by heart.D. Any job can change a person.7. What is the best title for the text?A. A Beneficial Experience of SurveyB. The Pleasure from JobsC. AA Great Street CleanerD. The Power of LaborCScience is always advancing over time. A self-driving car from the Google may be coming to a street near you. However, you won’t be able to buy it now. “We’re working to build the world’s most experienced driver,”Kraft, director of the project, said. “Everything that we learn in one of our cars gets passed to all of our cars. But you may need to get over the idea of traditional car ownership along the way.”Google’s software has already driven 5 million miles in U.S. cities, including an “early rider”test in Phoenix last April.Since then Google has grown confident enough to remove the “auxiliary wheel”: a human “safety driver”. Powering the vehicle’s self-driving functions is a series of cameras, radars and sensors on the car’s roof, which detect everything nearby from other vehicles and passers-by to cyclists.Kraft stressed that Google’s cars aren’t connected—they don’t need a 5G wireless link to go anywhere. “The car has everything it needs to drive on the car itself.”He said, “There are no signals coming from outer space or something telling it to turn right.”The resulting ride may not be too exciting but safe. Kraft added. “We can see three football fields down the road, we would come to a stop before we ran into these crowds.”Google’s system has a major advantage over the semi-autonomous(半自主的)systems of Tesla and Cadillac, both of which need continued human attention. Kraft said Google plans to have service in every major city by 2028 with thousands of cars driving themselves.8. What does the underlined words “auxiliary wheels”in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. A car that is very old.B. A driver who has been trained well.C. A part of a car used to sound the alarm.D. A condition where a driver doesn’t know his role.9. How do you know that Ben from London is really 25-year-old? Is his photo takenrecently? Is his name even Ben? Dating apps can be tricky to operate, particularly when you’re trying to know whether someone is trustworthy, but one thing you can’t cheat is your gene, which is why a new dating app is using DNA as a basis for its match.A dating app named Pheramor requires all users to hand in a cheek sample, from which a team of in-house scientists using a specially-created tool can queue the specific genes connected with attraction and then identify which users might be suitable. The process works by separating the 11 genes that link to our pheromones(信息素), the chemical signals that are believed to control; one’s attraction. Combining this data with the personal information allows the app to make very specific matches.“Pheramor uses both your biology and your social technology: we collect your genetic data through a cheek sample and collect your like, dislikes, and interest from your social media introductions like Facebook, Twitter, etc,”the app’s website explains. “All of them will be used in our specific software, which is designed to learn what you prefer.”The co-founder Brittany Barreto, who has a PHD in genetics added that Pheramor’s technology digs deeper thantraditional dating apps, making it almost impossible for people to cheat their way to a date. The Houston-based app is already up and running but hopes to be officially put into market in February with 3,000 members.12. What do we know about the new dating app according to Paragraph 1?A. It can be operated easily by users.B. It can know others’trustworthiness.C. It can select information on the website.D. It can use DNA to make matches for users.13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?A. What Pheramor is.B. How Pheramor works.C. How scientists deal with the data.D. How the genes are connected with attraction.14. What will be used in Pheramor to learn the users’preference?A. Attraction and pheromones.B. Pheromones and genetic data.C. Social technology and attraction.D. Genetic data and social media introductions.15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A. To introduce a safe dating app.B. To explore the future of the app.C. To avoid unreasonable requirements.D. To teach people how to design apps.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

ABissel is a small village of the West Sahara. It lies next to a l.5-square-kilometer oasis(绿洲), from where three days and nights are generally required to go out of the desert. However, before Ken Levin discovered it in 1926, none of the Bissel villagers had ever walked out of the desert. Reportedly, they were not unwilling to leave this barren land. Many had previously tried but failed, always somehow finding themselves back at the oasis after several days of trying to walk out. When interviewed by Ken Levin, an expert at the British Royal College of Sciences, the villagers explained that no matter which direction they walked it always brought them back to the village. Why couldn’t the Bissel villagers walk out of the desert? Levin was very puzzled. He had, by himself, managed to walk north from the village and reach the nearest town in three and a half days. He decided to carry out an experiment to solve the mystery. He and a Bissel villager called Argutel, would walk out of the desert together. They prepared enough water for a half-a-month journey and two camels. But this time Ken Levin didn't bring his compass. Levin would follow Argutel.Ten days later, they had walked for about 500 miles but were still in the desert. On the 11th morning, an oasis came into their view. They were back at Bissel. Levin now understood why the Bissel people couldn’t escape the desert. They had no knowledge of the North Star, which had for centuries provided sailors and other travelers with a point of direction. In the desert, if a person goes forward relyingonly on their senses, they will not be able to travel in a straight line. Rather they will travel in a very large circle and eventually track back to where they began. Levin explained to Argu tel the function of the North Star and said, “As long as you rest in the daytime and walk towards the brightest star at night, you would be able to walk out of the desert.” Argutel did as he was told. Three days later, he came to the edge of the desert. Now in the West Sahara, Bissel has become a bright pearl, where tens of thousands of tourists come every year. Argutel’s bronze statue stands in the center of the town. On its base are the words: ___________.21. Villagers in Bissel had never walked beyond the desert because ________.A. they were discouraged by their failuresB. they had a fear of the outside worldC. they had no desire to leave the oasisD. they had no method to find their way out22. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A. the use of a compass was necessary to walk out of the desertB. tourism in Bissel has been greatly developed and improvedC. Argutel became the leader of Bissel after his returnD. Ken Levin didn’t walk south because it would take more days23.W hich of the following can most probably be found at the base of Argutel’sstatue?A. Where there is a will, there is a way.B. A long journey starts with the first stepC. A new life starts from the fixed direction.D. Two heads are better than one.BThe future of written English will owe more to Hollywood films than Dickens or Shakespeare, if the findings of a study into children’s writing are anything to go by. Researchers who looked at the entries to a national competition found they were increasingly using Americanisms such as garbage, trash can, sidewalk, candy, sneakers, soda, and flashlight. The stories, written by pupils aged 7 to 13, show how fairy cakes are referred to as cupcakes and a dinner jacket has become a tuxedo. “Smart” is now often u sed for “clever” and “cranky” for “irritable”.Television also has a powerful influence on children’s work, with Lady Gaga and Argentinean footballer Lionel Messi among the famous names from TV cropping up repeatedly. But pupils are let down by basic spelling, punctuation and grammar, according to the study by Oxford University Press (OUP), which looked at the entries to BBC Radio Two’s “500 Words” competition.Children struggled to correctly spell simple words such as “does” and “clothes” and often failed to use the past tense correctly, frequently writing “rised” instead of “rose” or “thinked” instead of “thought”.Researchers also found that punctuation was underused, especially semi-colons and speech marks. Some did not know how to use capital letters. However, exclamation marks were overused. Researchers found 35,171 examples in total, with some young writers using five at a time!Popular US fiction such as the Twilight novels and films is thought to be fueling the increasing use of American vocabulary and spelling. Meanwhile, fears that texting was spoiling children’s written work were unfounded, they said, with youngsters only using text language when they were referring to a text message.Samantha Armstrong from OUP said: “Perhaps we are catching a gli mpse of the language of the future.” Chris Evans, whose radio show runs the competition, said the results were “fascinating”, adding: “Who’d have thought that Messi and Gaga would be some of the most used names?”24. Which of the following was NOT frequent ly found in the pupils’ stories?A. A variety of Americanisms.B. Overuse of exclamation marks.C. Names of famous TV stars.D. Text message language.25. What can we infer from the passage?A. American movies and books are increasingly popular in Britain.B. The national writing competition is organised by Oxford University Press.C. Written English is more influenced by classical literature than popular USCulture.D. Lionel Messi is now the most famous footballer in Britain.26. The underlined phrase “unfounded” in Paragraph 7 probably means _________.A. unnoticeableB. not foundC. not based on factsD. unbearable27. The passage is intended to _________.A. share the experience about how to teach written English in a correct wayB. discuss the noticeable changes and evolution of written English in BritainC. criticize the influence of popular US culture on British children’s languageuseD. show that British children have spellings and grammar abilitiesCConsumers everywhere are faced with the same dilemma: given limited resources, what sorts of purchases are most likely to produce lasting happiness and satisfaction? Recent research has confirmed that experiential purchases tend to produce greater enjoyment gains than material purchases. The reason why experiences improve with time may be that it is possible to think about experiences in a more abstract manner than possessions. For example, if you think back to a fantastic summer from your youth, you might easily remember an abstract sense of warm sunshine and youthful exuberant (生气勃勃), but you're less likely to remember exactly what you did day by day.Material possessions are harder to think about in an abstract sense. The car you bought is still a car, that great new jacket you picked up cheap is still just a jacket. It’s more likely the experience of that summer has taken on a symbolic meaning that can live longer in your memory than a possession.Material purchasing may have a negative impact on happiness because consumers often buy “joyless” material possessions, resulting in comfort but not pleasure. In general, people adapt to experiences more slowly than to material purchase. This can be seen in both negative and positive purchases: enjoyment adaptation would result in a positive experience causing more happiness but a negative experience causing less happiness than the comparable material purchase with the same initial happiness level.Experience, however, seems to be more resistant to these sorts of unfavourable comparisons. It is because of the unique nature of experience. It’s more difficult to make an unfavourable comparison when there is nothing directly comparable. After all, each of our youthful summers is different. It’s well established that social comparisons can have a huge effect on how we view what might seem like positive events. One striking example is the finding that people prefer to earn $50,000 a year while everyone else earns $25,000, instead of earning $100,000 themselves and having other people earn $200,000.A similar effect is seen for possessions. When there are so many flat-screen HD TVs to choose from, it's easy to make unfavourable comparisons between our choice and the others available.28. An abstract sense in the passage refers to awareness of something __________.A. you can’t remember wellB. you cannot understandC. you cannot see or touchD. you cannot think about29.If you make an experiential purchase before a material purchase, you may goto__________.A. an exhibition before going to a parkB. a mall before going to a grocer'sC. a market before going to a restaurantD. a theatre before going to a store30. The example of earnings is given to actually indicate__________.A. how people feel contentB. how nearsighted people areC. how people hold prejudiceD. how ridiculous people are31. It is implied in the passage that, after their material purchases, people might__________.A. pick every fault in the products they have gotB. regret making a wrong decision to buy the itemsC. leave what they’ve purchased untouched at homeD. enjoy their ownership of what they have boughtD1234 PENS is your No. 1 source for promotional pens, advertising pens, and logo pens.
