By drawing patterns on the surface of a cup of tea, chabaixi, an ancient Chinese tea trick dis-played in a recent TV drama, has gone viral for its apparent similarity with modern latte art However, ten years ago, this distinctive technique was close to disappearing completely. Zhang Zhifeng, a practitioner of chabaixi, found scenes of chabaixi in the drama aroused great interest among ordinary people.Chabaixi can create endless patterns such as bamboos and mountains or even calligraphy. There are over a dozen steps, from grinding (碾碎) tea for fine powder to pouring boiled water, stirring the mixture for thick froth, and finally drawing the patterns. It is different from making latte because people use clear water as the object to put into the cup instead of milk. But when the water touches the surface of whipped (搅打起泡沫的) tea, it turns into a white color and disappears in 20 minutes. The process before the drawing is known as the tea-making tech-nique, diancha, the quality of which is crucial to whether patterns can be successfully produced later."Chabaixi is one of the countless forms of tea-making techniques in China. The importance of chabaixi is that not only this technique is unique in the world, but also it gives us a window into people's lifestyle in the Song Dynasty, a period of time when leisure activities in some ways resemble what we have now, "Zhang said. Before chabaixi was discovered by TV audiences, the technique was listed as part of China's Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017, after it was recovered by Zhang Zhifeng, who spent nearly 30 years studying and researching the origins and making of tea, but for him it was all worth-while."This technique is key to the tea culture of the Song Dynasty, and it would be a shame to let it fade. A"Grandma, Grandma, tell us a story!" Four darling children sat by my feet, looking up at me expectantly.Suddenly, we were interrupted by clapping. "Terrific," the director said, stepping up to the stage from the aisle(过道). “Except, could you kids face the audience a bit more?"The kids shifted to face the empty seats, which would be filled in a few days for the church play. "Perfect," the director said. "Now, Grandma, read to your grandchildren." A pang of sadness hit me. If only I could read to my real grandchildren!I had a granddaughter, but I'd never met her. Sixteen years earlier my son was involved in a relationship that ended badly. But out of it came a blessing: a baby girl named Lena. I hoped to be a grandmother to her-- but shortly after the birth, the mother moved without any address left. Over the years, I asked around town to try and find my son's ex-wife, but it seemed that she didn't want to be found.I'd just joined this new church a week earlier, and was at once offered the part of Grandma in the play. At least now I could pretend to be a grandma. The rehearsals went well, and finally the day of the show arrived. The performance was great. "You all looked so natural up there," one of my friends said.Afterward, we went to the church basement for refreshments. I walked over to one of the girls in the play. Rehearsals had been in such a hurry that we never really got to talk. "How's my granddaughter?" I joked." Fine!" she answered. Just then, someone else walked up and asked the girl her name.I wasn't sure I heard the girl's answer correctly. But it made me ask her another question. "What's your mother's name?"She told me. I was still in shock. "And what's your father's name?" I asked. It was my son. She'd only started going to that church a week before I did. Since that day of the play, we've stayed close. Not long ago, she even made me a great grandma.1. What was the author doing at the beginning of the story?A. Telling a storyB. Playing a game.C. Preparing for a play.D. Acting in a movie.2. Why did the author feel " a pang of sadness" at the words of the director?A. The director's words reminded her of her lost granddaughter.B. The director's words hurt her badly.C. She wished that she had a real grandchild.D. The director wasn't content with her performance.3. What happened in the church basement after the play?A. The author played a joke on Lena.B. Lena treated the author as a friend.C. The author got to know who Lena was.D. Lena mistook the author for her grandmother.4. We can infer that when writing the story, the author felt ______.A. light-heartedB. heartbrokenC. confusedD. anxiousBThe ability of falling cats to right themselves in midair and land on their feet has been a source of wonder for ages. Biologists long regarded it as an example of adaptation by natural selection, but for physicists it bordered on the miraculous. Newton's laws of motion assume that the total amount of spin(旋转) of a body cannot change unless an external force speeds it up or slows it down. If a cat has no spin when it is released and experiences no external force, it ought not to be able to twist(转动) around as it falls. In fact, the righting of a falling cat is similar to a magician's trick. The movements of the cat in midair are too fast for the human eye to follow, so the process is hard to understand. Either the eye must be speeded up, or the cat's fall slowed down for the phenomenon to be observed. A century ago the former was realized by means of high-speed photography using equipment now available in any drugstore. But in the nineteenth century the capture on film of a falling cat led to a scientific experiment. The experiment was described in a paper presented to the Paris Academy in 1894. Two series of twenty photographs each, one from the side and one from behind, show a white cat in the act of righting itself. Grainy though they are, the photos show that the cat was dropped upside down, with no spin, and still landed on its feet. Careful analysis of the photos reveals the secret. As the cat rotates the front of its body clockwise, the back and tail twist (扭转) counterclockwise, so that the total spin remains zero, in perfect accord with Newton's laws. Halfway down, the cat pulls in its legs before changing its twist in the opposite way and then extends them again, with the desired end result. The explanation was that while nobody can acquire spin without force, a flexible one can readily change its direction. Cats know this naturally, but scientists could not be sure how it happened until they increased the speed oftheir views a thousand times as much.5. What does the passage mainly discuss?A. The explanation of an interesting phenomenonB. Miracles in modern scienceC. The process in scientific researchD. The differences between biology and physics.6.Which of the following can be inferred about high-speed photography in the late 1800's?A. It was a relatively new technology.B. The necessary equipment was easy to obtain.C. The resulting photographs are difficult to explain.D. It was not fast enough to provide new information.7.The underlined word “rotates” in third paragraph is closest in meaning toA. dropsB. turnsC. controlsD. touches8.According to the passage, a cat is able to right itself in midair because it isA. frightenedB. smallC. intelligentD. flexibleCWhen people search online, they leave a trail that remains stored on the central computers of firms such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft. Analyzing what we're looking for on the Web can offer a remarkable understanding of our anxieties and enthusiasms.UK writer John Battelle wrote on his blog, "This can tell us extraordinary things about who we are and what we want as a culture."Google's experimental service Google Trends, for example, compares the numbers of people searching for different words and phrases from 2004 to the present.According to these graphs, sometimes people's interests are driven obviously by the latest news: when the Spice Girls, a pop group, announce a reunion, there's an immediate rush to find out more about them. Other results are strikingly seasonal: people go shopping online for coats in winter and sandals(凉鞋)in summer. The most fascinating possibility is that search data might help predict behavior. Perhaps we search for a political candidate's name when we are thinking about voting for him or her. This information could clearly be useful to a marketer- it's already how Google decides which ads to show on its search results pages – or to a political campaign manager.Marissa Mayer, a Google vice-president, argues that Google Trends correctly "predicted" George Bush's victory over John Kerry in the 2004 election. The graph clearly shows that Bush continued his lead over Kerry, in terms of search volumes, even when polls(民意测验) suggested the race was on a razor's edge. However, that’s not always the case. For instance, the same approach predicted Hillary Clinton would beat Barack Obama in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008 turned out to be wrong in the end.9. According to the passage, Google are able to see the trails of the people when they are ________ .A. using their computersB. surfing the InternetC. using its search engineD. connecting their computer to another one10. The search data can help foresee the following EXCEPT ______A. The different features of different culturesB. the better place to put advertisements inC. The victory of a politician in the electionD. The reunion of a pop group11. On the whole, the author holds a view towards the search trail that ______A. It is necessary to make rules about collecting the search trailsB. People are in danger of letting out their personal informationC. The search data is very useful to understand people in societyD. Search trails might cause a lot of disorder.12. The underlined expression in the last paragraph means_______A. The competition was a very close oneB. The competition was towards the endC. The competition showed a clear resultD. The competition was endlessDGadgets (小玩意儿)with education programs start to find a place in classroom. While most public schools don't allow the devices because they are considered distractions--and sometimes portable cheating tools--some school districts have started to put the technology to use. The key, educators say, is controlling the environment in which they are used.In St. Mary's, Ohio, a school district of 2,300 students is continuing a program where students are assigned PDAs, or personal digital assistants, for use as a learning tool in the classroom, and at home. They use applications created by a company to draw pictures and create sketches, journals and write essays, said Kyle, the district's technology coordinator(协调者). Other applications create flash cards for spelling and math.Students took the phones on a museum field trip where they took photos, uploaded them to a server where the teacher could view the assignment and write comments on what they saw.In addition to the applications that students use, having the PDA teaches them responsibility, he said."Cell phones aren't going away. Mobile technology isn't going away, " he said. "Right now, what we're telling kids is 'You go home and use whatever technology you want, but when you get to school, we're going to ask you to step back in time.' It doesn't make any sense," he said. The district started the program last school year with $40,000 and 60 Palm personal data devices that were handed out to students. Kyle said teachers who used to wait weeks to use computer labs were now able to use technology right in their classrooms--and students love it.But there are many questions districts face before opening the door to allow cellphones: If children had their own fancier phones, would they be allowed those instead of school-issued devices? How would they fund PDAs in large districts? And do kids really need technology always at their fingertips?13. Students in public schools are forbidden to have the devices because ______A. the devices have bad effect on studentsB. the devices are considered poor qualityC. it makes no sense to use them at schoolD. it is a waste of money14. A school district uses the PDAs ______A. as a learning toolB. as an applicationC. to keep in touch with the studentsD. to watch the students in the exam15. From the last paragraph we can learn _______A. all the kids really need cell phones in schoolB. not all the kids really need cell phones in schoolC. there is no doubt for cell phones to be used in schoolD. there is still some doubt for cell phones to be used in school16. Kyle's attitude towards the use of PDAs in the classroom might be ______A. approvalB. dissatisfactionC. suspicionD. toleranceEIt is difficult to imagine what life would be like without memory. The meanings of thousands of everyday perceptions, the basis for the decisions we make, and the roots of our habits and skills are to be found in our past experiences, which are brought into the present by memory.Memory can be defined as the capacity to keep information available for later use. It not only includes "remembering" things like arithmetic or historical facts, but also involves any change in the way an animal typically behaves. Memory is involved when a rat gives up eating grain because he has sniffed something suspicious in the grain pile.Memory exists not only in humans and animals but also in some physical objects and machines. Computers, for example, contain devices for storing data for later use. It is interesting to compare the memory storage capacity of a computer with that of a human being. The instant access memory of a large computer may hold up to 100,000 "words"—string of alphabetic or numerical characters—ready for instant use. An average U.S. teenager probably recognizes the meaning of about 100,000 words of English. However, this is but a fraction of the total amount of information that the teenager has stored. Consider, for example, the number of faces and places that the teenager can recognize on sight. The use of words is the basis of the advanced problem-solving intelligence of human beings. A large part of a person's memory is in terms of words and combinations of words. But while language greatly expands the number and the kind of things a person can remember, it also requires a huge memory capacity. It may well be this capacity that distinguishes humans, setting them apart from other animals.17. Which of the following is TRUE about memory?A. It helps us perceive things happening around us every day.B. It is based on the decisions we made in the past.C. It is rooted in our past habits and skills.D. It connects our past experiences with the present.18. According to the passage, memory is helpful in one's life in the following aspects EXCEPT that ________.A. it involves a change in one's behaviorB. it keeps information for later useC. it warns people not to do things repeatedlyD. it enables one to remember events that happened in the past19. What is the major characteristic of man's memory capacity according to the author?A. It can be expanded by language.B. It can remember all the combined words.C. It may keep all the information in the past.D. It may change what has been stored in it.20. Human beings make themselves different from other animals by _______.A. having the ability to perceive dangerB. having a far greater memory capacityC. having the ability to recognize faces and places on sightD. having the ability to draw on past experiencesCACA AABD CDCA AADA DCAB。

手惰市安逸阳光实验学校环境保护类Passage 1 (2011•广东卷•D)In a world with limited land, water and other natural resources (资源), the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise. Actually, the past decade has seen more and more forests disappearing and globe becoming increasingly warm. People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable (可持续的) ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources.Today, sustainable development is a proper trend in many countries. According to a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decade. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy revolution. It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil (棕榈油), which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown by more than 50%.Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions (排放) and targets for saving and reusing energy. Besides, stronger management of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge public expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accelerate the change from traditional model to a sustainable one.The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of a growing population within the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries.41. The traditional business model is harmful because of all the following EXCEPT that ______.A. it makes the world warmerB. it consumes natural resourcesC. it brings severe damage to forestsD. it makes growth hard to continue42. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?A. China lacks wind and solar energy.B. China is the leader of the low-carbon market.C. High-speed trains are a low-carbon development.D. Palm oil is made at the cost of valuable forests.43. To fully develop the low-carbon markets, government can ______.A. cut public expensesB. forbid carbon emissionC. develop public resourcesD. encourage energy conservation44. We can learn from the last paragraph that businesses have many chances to ______.A. develop sustainable productsB. explore new natural resourcesC. make full use of natural resourcesD. deal with the major challenge45. Many citizens are still confused about the classification of the four different types of trash. Thankfully, authorities have released an official guideline to clarify the new rules. The guideline, published by the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau, provides a rather clear definition on the four kinds of waste: recyclable waste, hazardous (有害的) waste, household food waste and residual (剩余的) waste.Hazardous waste, as the name suggests, includes assorted poisonous materials like used batteries, light bulbs, out-of-date medicines, paint and pesticides.Household food waste which is translated to “wet trash” in Chines e,refers to food leftovers, rottenfood, pet food, fruit peels, remains of TCM herbs (中药) and flowers.Paper, plastic, glass, metal and textiles (纺织品) are counted as recyclable waste. The definition of residual waste is a little confusing. Anything that is not listed above belongs in this category. As specific as the new guideline is, residents still have a hard time sorting trash correctly and are finding it challenging to memorize them all. For instance, both plastic bottles and bubble tea or coffee cups are plastic materials. However, the former falls to the category of recyclable waste and the latter belongs to residual waste. To save the hassle, some netizens have come up with their own ways to sort trash.“We should do this from a pig’s angle,” commented one netizen. “Those edible (可食用的) for pigs are household food waste. Those even pigs don’t want to eat are residual waste. If a pig consumes something and dies of it, then something must be hazardous waste. Those which can be sold and the money we gain can be used to purchase pigs are recyclable waste.” The new regulation has gone into effect on July 1. Those who do not sort their trash properly will be fined RMB200.4. What do the old thrown-away sweaters belong to?A. Residual waste.B. Hazardous waste.C.Recyclable waste.D. Household food waste. 5. What does “wet trash” have in common?A. They are completely wet. B. They all come from plants. C. They can give off bad smell. D. They can break up easily. 6. What is the tone of the netizen? A. Humorous. B. Serious. C. Delightful. D. Uncertain. 7. What is the main idea of the text? A. Shanghai bans four sorts of garbage. B. Shanghai launches garbage sorting enforcement. C. Citizens in Shanghai still question garbage sorting. D. Citizens in Shanghai welcome the garbage sorting policy. C Detroit Hives is a non-profit organization that buys vacant lots in the city to transform into bee farms.Timothy Paul and Nicole Lindsey started the non-profit last year, focused on improving the Motor City’s “left behind” communities and educating people on bees.Timothy got interested in honey and honeybees because of a cough he couldn’t shake. He was sick for months, until a store owner in nearby Ferndale recommended he try some local honey. Soon Timothy’s cough was gone. And he and Nicole found that abandoned urban sites often became illegal dumping grounds, contributing to an overgrowth of allergens (过敏原) — not to mention the mess. The couple began to think about how to settle that issue by producing local honey on vacant sites, and Detroit Hives was born.To become certified beekeepers, Timothy and Nicole took two courses. They bought their first vacant lot for $340, with the aid of the Detroit Land Bank Authority community partnership program. From there, they built three hives and vegetable garden plots. Thousands of bees now buzz (嗡嗡) on the lot. “The neighbors say they wish we were there decades of years ago. That area had always been a place where people dumped garbage, so when we came here, we gave that area a sense of purpose. The neighbors keep an eye on the area to make sure that people don’t dump any more,” Lindsey said.Currently, Detroit Hives has partnered with local Detroit Soup and a homeless shelter to provide local, raw honey and they also sell their sweet product. In addition, Detroit Hives spreads awareness about beesthrough public tours of the farm. The couple also speak at schools in the area. They aim to expand beyond their first farm this year.8. What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 2?A. The method of curing cough.B. The inspiration for Detroit Hives.C. The terrible environment in Detroit.D. The medical value of local honey.9. What can we learn about the couples’ work?A. It enriched the variety of vegetables.B. It disturbed the neighbors’ normal life.C. It improved the environment in the area.D. It enabled neighbors to live in harmony.10. Why does Detroit Hives offer public tours?A. To appeal to more customers.B. To help expand their first farm.C. To promote their honey product.D. To help people learn more about bees.11. Which of the following best describes the husband and wife?A. Optimistic.B. Faithful.C.Creative.D. Demanding. D As they reach school age, about 90 percent of children will have experienced a condition in which fluid (液体) fills the middle ear, muffling (使模糊) sound and sometimes causing infection. The fluid usually clears on its own, but if not, it can lead to a painful ear infection called acute otitis (中耳炎) media. In some cases the fluid can persist for more than a year, causing hearing loss during this period, and slowing down their development of language and social skills.Diagnosis usually requires a visit to a specialist—but researchers have now developed an app that detects this fluid just as accurately, with only a smartphone and a paper funnel (漏斗).Doctors typically detect the problem by peering into the ear for a visual assessment. Yet, this method has only a 50 percent accuracy rate. “Right now, if you bring your child to a pediatrician, or to any urgent care family doctor, the way they look a t whether or not there’s fluid in the middle ear is by looking at the eardrum,” says Sharat Raju, a surgeon in the department of head and neck surgery at the University of Washington. For a cheaper and more accessible alternative, researchers at the University of Washington turned to smartphones. First the user follows a template to cut and tape a piece of paper into a funnel, which can be placed between a smartphone and the patient’s ear. Next the app plays a chirping sound through the phone’s speaker; the sound waves bounce off the eardrum and hit the phone’s microphone, where they register and are analyzed by the app. An eardrum with fluid behind it will vibrate (振动) differently than if the middle ear is full of air, as it normally is.To develop the app, the researchers first played chirps for patients with and without fluid in their ears. They recorded the echoes (回音), which indicate the eardrum’s mobility. Then they used a machine learning model to classify the returning sound waves, determining which audio characteristics indicated a normal ear and which suggested the presence of fluid. Once they tested the app on 98 children, ranging from 18 months to 17 years old, at Seattle Children’s Hospital. It correctly detected fluid in 85 percent of cases, and correctly identified fluid-free ears in 82 percent. The researchers are currently trying to get FDA approval for the app, and have founded a company to commercialize it. They hope to make it available by the end of the year, to help parents track children’s ear health at home.12. What do we know about the fluid from the first paragraph?A. It is mostly part of children’s growth.B. It is unavoidable for any child.C. It is a permanent physical condition.D. It is beyond any medical means.13. What does the underlined word “pediatrician” refer to in Paragraph 3?A. A hospital.B. A specialist.C. A relative.D. An app.14. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?A. The application of the app.B. The causes of the kid’s ear problem.C. The purpose of developing the app.D. The experiment of the smartphone.15. What do the researchers expect of the app?A. It will upgrade the medical technology.B. It will hit the market in the near future.C. It will help children do better academically.D. It will save doctors medical operations.

Last summer vacation, I went to visit my grandparents in a small village. It was a beautiful and peaceful place, with green fields and clear rivers. One day, my grandpa took me to a farm where we could pick our own fruits and vegetables. We bought a big basket and started picking strawberries. As I picked the strawberries, I noticed a small, white butterfly dancing among the flowers. It was so lovely and delicate. I couldn't help but follow it as it fluttered from one flower to another. It seemed to be leading me somewhere, so I kept on following it.After a while, the butterfly finally led me to a hidden corner of the farm. I was surprised to find a small pond with lots of frogs. They were making a loud noise. Among the frogs, there was a little frog that had a crown on its head. It looked like a king. I was amazed.Curious, I approached the pond and tried to catch the little frog. But every time I got close, it jumped away. I tried again and again, but failed each time. Eventually, I gave up and sat down by the pond, watching the frogs jumping around.Suddenly, the little frog with the crown on its head came hopping over to me. It sat down next to me and croaked softly. I reached out my hand and gently touched it. To my surprise, it didn't jump away. I held it in my hand and we stared at each other for a while.Just as I was about to put the frog down, it started to speak. "Thank you for not giving up on catching me," it said. "I am a magic frog. Whoever catches me will be granted one wish. What is your wish?"I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I had always wanted to have a pet dog, so I told the frog my wish. The frog nodded and said, "Your wish will come true. Take good care of your new pet dog."After that, the little frog hopped back into the pond. My grandpa walked over to me and asked why I was sitting alone by the pond. I told him about the magic frog and my wish. He laughed and said, "Sometimes, miracles happen when you least expect them."1. Where did the author go on vacation?2. What did the author notice while picking strawberries?3.

During their six-month stay, Wang, alongside Zhai and Ye, will do experiments and set up robotic arms. Wang will also do the first spacewalk by a Chinese woman, reported Xinhua. Wang’s space dream started in 2003, when China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space. She told herself, “China now has a male astronaut. When will there be a female one?” At that time, Wang was a pilot in the Chinese army. After having safe flights for 1,600 hours over nine years, Wang was a strong candidate to become an astronaut in 2010. She pushed herself hard, getting the same training as men, including the pull-ups (引体向上) and barbells (杠铃). “The space environment won’t change because you are a woman,” she told Xinhua. The hardest part is the high-G training. Sitting in a spinning (旋转的) machine, Wang would become blind for a while because her brain was short of blood. “There’s a red button (按钮),” said Wang. “If you can’t bear it, you can press it to stop.” But Wang never used it. “There is no such red button in my heart.”That strong spirit finally led to realizing her dream in 2013. She joined the team for the Shenzhou X mission (任务).Wang said that as astronauts, women have their own advantages. “Women tend (倾向于) to be more patient and can better deal with loneliness. Women’s hearts are also easier to adapt to the weightless (失重的) environment, making them more suitable for long-term missions.”Retired NASA astronaut Catherine Coleman sent a greeting to Wang before the Shenzhou XIII trip. Coleman said, “When you look out the window and see the stars and the earth, billions of women will be looking out that window with you.” Wang carries the spirit of every young woman who dreams of something big.5.Wang won’t _______ during the six-month space stay.A.do experiments B.set up robotic arms C.look after her daughter 6.Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?A.Wang had few difficulties in the training.B.Wang is the first female astronaut to do the spacewalk in China.C.According to Coleman, Wang sets an example for women.7.According to the passage, the underlined word “candidate” in Paragraph 3 means_______.A.候选人B.参赛者C.考生8.According to Wang, a female astronaut has advantages of _______.a. more patienceb. less weightc. more problem-solving skillsd. better ability to deal with lonelinessA.ad B.cd C.bc9.What’s the best title of the passage?A.Long-term Space Missions B.The Space Dream C.Tiangong Space Station (2021·江苏无锡·九年级期末)On Nov 8, Wang Yaping, a female taikonaut of Shenzhou XIII mission, became China’s first and the world’s 16th female space walker. The expected six-month journey in space has left many curious about the differences between male and female astronauts, especially in terms of performing extravehicular (舱外的) activities (EV As). Despite (即使) physical challenges, female astronauts have unique (独一无二的) advantages.Understanding between astronauts is very important for carrying out EV As, which is based on excellent communication skills. Women are superior (更好的) in communication and language expression, and this helps female astronauts do extravehicular activities, according to Yang Yuguang, vice chair of Space Transportation Committee of the International Astronautical Federation.Men and women are different in body size, which also gives women unique advantages for spacewalks. “Their generally smaller size is an advantage, as women will be able to control their weight better and perform a wider variety of tasks,” Pang told China Daily.Women in general weigh less, eat less food, consume less oxygen (氧气), and therefore required less fuel (燃料) to get into space. A taikonaut must weigh between 55 kilograms and 70 kilograms to fit in the cabin of spacecraft and consume less fuel, according to CGIN.A different body shape requires a different spacesuit. A tailor-made spacesuit was prepared for Wang’s extravehicular activities, which was lighter than the males’. Designers optimized the pattern of this spacesuit in the lower limb (下肢) area to make it more suitable for astronauts with slimmer figures.According to Pang, many studies have found that female astronauts are more suitable for space missions, and have advantages over male astronauts in qualities such as attention to detail and thinking comprehensively (全面地).Men tend to excel in shorter-term, goal-oriented (目标导向的) situations while women are better in longer-term habitation-type (居住类) circumstances, according to National Geographic.Women’s participation in EV As is an integral (不可缺少的) part of space missions, and we are witnessing history thanks to Wang’s bravery, according to Yang.10.What do we know about Wang’s extravehicular activities?A.She is the first ever female space walker.B.The mission was planned to show gender equality.C.She performed some tasks that her male partners couldn’t do.D.The spacesuit she wore was specially designed.11.What does the underlined word “optimize” mean in this passage?A.make something better B.make something worseC.make something colourful D.make something colourless 12.Which of the following is an advantage females have over male astronauts? In 2013, with the assistance of two other Shenzhou X crew members, Wang hosted the country’s first live space lecture to over 60 million schoolchildren across China.More space to teachCompared with the class eight years ago, this year’s space lecture is greatly different. The “classroom” is bigger. Instead of Tiangong I experimental module(实验舱), this year Wang had the space lecture in the Tianhe space core module(核心舱), which is the biggest spacecraft developed by China.Technological developmentThe quality of space to ground communication is also much improved. The space lecture eight years ago sometimes faced the challenges of the video freezing and an unclear picture, but this year’s lecture is different. With the help of China’s Tianlian satellites, the transmission(传输) speed has been highly increased and the whole live broadcast has run smoothly. These changes show that Chinese aerospace industry has made great progress in the past eight years.More coursesAlong with the technological progress, this year’s space lecture discussed more areas inscience. Eight years ago, students could watch the interesting phenomenon of weightlessness in space on TV. But this year, biology was added.Though these space lectures showed various topics, the aim behind the lectures has never changed. The space lectures aim to “spread knowledge about manned spaceflights and light up the interests for science among young people”. The spirit of science in the youth is an important driver of the progress of mankind. The space lecture makes young Chinese people take pride in our country as they see the rapid development of our space technology. 18.How far is Tiangong space station from the earth?A.2400 kilometers B.1800 kilometers C.400 kilometers D.600 kilometers 19.Who gave the space lecture on Dec 9th 2021?A.Wang Yaping, Zhai Zhigang and Ye GuangfuB.Wang Yaping, Yang Liwei and Liu yangC.Wang Yaping, Zhai Zhigang and Yang LiweiD.Wang Yaping, Zhai Zhigang and Nie Haisheng20.Which of the following is false according to the passage?A.The spacecraft where the astronauts gave the lecture on December 9th, 2021 is bigger than before.B.We could watch the whole live broadcast clearly on December 9th, 2021 because of technological development.C.Chinese aerospace industry has achieved a lot in the past eight years.D.We can learn as much knowledge as before from the space lecture.21.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “phenomenon”?A.原理B.数据C.现象D.表演22.What can we learn from the passage?A.The space lecture can not attract young people to study science.B.The purpose of the space lecture is to spread knowledge about manned spaceflights. Welcome to Tiangong Class.” A special lecture began on Tiangong space station about 400 kilometers above Earth on Dec. 9, 2021.Lasting for about an hour, the space lecture was given to millions of students. Three astronauts, Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu showed how they live and work on the space station and did some interesting experiments. This space lecture was greatly different from the one 8 years before. The “classroom” was bigger. It was China’s first extraterrestrial (地球外的) lecture series.Plants in space —The lab of the space station has many conditions that the Earth lab does not have, such as the weightless environment. The important jobs for astronauts included cell (细胞) observation and “feeding” plant life. In the lecture, Ye showed experiments about cell growth in a weightless environment. As early as 2016, Chinese scientists tried to grow rice on the Tiangong II space lab to study how plants grow without an Earth-like environment.Use it or lose it —The human body grows with the pull of Earth’s gravity (重力). But in space, our bones and muscles (肌肉) don’t need to support our body’s weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. Astronauts can lose up to 20 percent of their muscles after a couple of weeks. That is dangerous for astronauts because they will be too weak to work.Astronauts have different ways to precent this. Zhai introduced a special uniform called “penguin suit”. Wearing it, astronauts use their muscles to stretch the bands in it. This keeps their muscles strong. Wang also showed students how she walked on a machine, and rode a bicycle. Astronauts exercise like that every day to prevent muscle loss.Young voices -Students were really interested in the lecture. A 13-year-old boy from Tianjin said, “The most exciting thing I learned is that astronauts “fly” all the time because there is no gravity.”Yin Peixin, an 11-year-old girl from Hubei said, “My favorite experiment is the one with the table tennis ball. Wang put the ball into a glass of water, but the ball didn’t float (漂浮). This was so magical!”Look! It was an eye-opening experience that would light up students’ interest in science, wasn’t it?23.What do we know about the 2021 space lecture from Paragraph 1?A.It was similar to the one 8 years before.B.It took place half a year ago.C.It showed astronauts’ life and work.D.It was given in a smaller classroom. 24.From Paragraph 2, what did Ye want to show the students?A.How cell grows on the space station.B.How rice is grown on the Tiangong lab.C.How to better grow space plants.D.How to study the rules of plant growth. 25.What does the part “Use it or lose it” mainly talk about?A.The reasons for muscle loss.B.Muscle loss in space and ways to stop it.C.The necessity of daily exercise.D.The advantages of “penguin suit”. 26.According to the article, which is NOT TRUE about the 2021 space lecture?A.The influence is far more than one hour.B.It showed the differences without gravity.C.It interested the kids with the experiments.D.It first introduced plant growth in space. 27.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing this article?A.To light up people’s interest in space experiments.B.To explain the importance of studying plants in space.C.To introduce the space lecture by Chinese astronauts.D.To make scientific knowledge popular among readers.(2022·重庆南开中学一模)Wang Yaping, together with Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu, went into space aboard the Shenzhou XIII on October 16th, 2021.
Passage 1One day, Mr. Li was reading a book in his office after school. Most readers know that his real name was Samuel Longhorne Clemens, but how many know where the pen name “Mark Twain” came from? The answer shows Clemens' colourful early life before he became a writer. “Mark Twain” was the cry shouted on a ship when the ship entered a part of a river that was two fathoms(6 feet)deep. “Twain” is an oldfashioned way of saying “two”. Twain trained as a ship pilot on the Mississippi river for two years, a time that he wrote about in the humorous Life on the Mississippi(1883).The famous river would become an important theme in many of his works—who could forget the journey of Huck and Jim along it in his most famous book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn(1884)?With little education, he had to teach himself how to write stories. Whenever possible, he would go to public libraries. There he spent much time reading and thinking, which greatly helped him with his writing. On the other hand, his life experiences gave him wonderful material to write about and attract readers. Twain wrote in a style that has been called “local colour” because it shows great knowledge of local people and their customs. This gift is very clear in the two books for which Twain is still celebrated today:The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(1876) and its followup The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which many people call “The Great American Novel”.The most amazing invention in the book is the voice of Huck himself. Huck did not enjoy schooling. It shows in the way he uses language, in a spoken style. Only a master like Twain could copy the way a young southern boy talked so well.()1. What does the underlined word “gift” mean in the passage?A. Twain's talent for selfteaching.B. Twain's “local colour” writing style.C. Twain's good sense of humour.D. Twain's experiences as a ship pilot.()2. According to the passage, what is the best part of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn?A. The deep social meaning.B. The exciting life experiences.C. The special way that Huck talks.D. The nice view of the Mississippi.()3. At the beginning of Paragraph 3.C. At the beginning of Paragraph 4.D. At the beginning of Paragraph 5.()4. What is the passage mainly about?A. Mark Twain's career as a great writer.B. Mark Twain's interest in describing local life.C. Mark Twain's achievements in American literature field.D. Mark Twain's life experiences which influenced his writing.Passage 7Rachel Carson(19071964) was a pioneer of the world's environmental movement through her writing about the protection of the natural world. Her 1962 book Silent Spring made her well known by many people. It describes the harmful changes in the environment of using toxic(有害的) chemicals on farmland.Carson's career started as a biologist in the US Bureau of Fisheries. ln 1951 she published her first book, The Sea Around Us, which became a bestseller. It made her rich enough to leave her job and devote her life to writing. She was a gifted writer. Her next two books were also about the oceansand both topped the book sales lists.Carson's book Silent Spring completely changed the way America thought about nature. It painted a bleak(荒凉的) future for the whole natural world. It led to a nationwide ban(禁止) on the use of a deadly chemical called DDT, and other toxic pesticides(农药) that farmers used for their crops. Many people say the book led to the creation of America's Environmental Protection Agency. Since her death, Carson's name has continued to be connected with protecting the environment. There is now a yearly Rachel Carson Book Prize. Norway awards the Rachel Carson Prize to women who have made great contributions to the field of environmental protection. In 1980, 16 years after her death, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in America.()1. What happened to Rachel Carson in 1962?A.

Day 74
Day 74Passage 1Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive. Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator (猎食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the "hurt" adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don't make nests. Instead, they get into other birds' nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, thechimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.As children, many of us learn the saying "You can't fool Mother Nature. " But maybe you can't trust her, either.1. A plover protects its young from a predator by ________ .A. getting closer to its youngB. driving away the adult predatorC. leaving its young in another nestD. pretending to be injured2. By "Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky" (paragraph 5), the author means ________ .A. chimps are ready to attack othersB. chimps are sometimes dishonestC. chimps are jealous of the winnersD. chimps can be selfish too3. Which of the following is true according to the passage? ________A. Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from othersB. The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner's handC. Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nestsD. Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back4. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? ________A. Do animals lie?B. Does Mother Nature fool animals?C. How do animals learn to lie?D. How does honesty help animals survive?Passage 269-year-old grandmother with no teeth of her own has eventually won a long legal battle to stop a Scottish regional council(政务委员会) adding fluoride(氟化物) chemical to the public water supply. In a case which has already cost the taxpayer £1, 000, 000, the judge ruled that it was beyond the powers of the local authority to add the chemical to the water in order to reduce tooth decay. At her home last night Mrs. Catherine fluoride to public drinking water made it into some kind of dirty soup. "Where would it stop? " she asked. "They might come up with the idea of putting drugs into the water to keep the unemployed quiet. " It was a horrible poison, she said, that could have caused all kinds of diseases, including cancer. The judge, however, concluded that there was no evidence to suggest that the inclusion of fluoride in the water supply would have had a negative effect on pulpier health. Although the chemical might serve as an efficient and convenient means of achieving a beneficial effect on the dental health of consumers generally, he said, andits use was greatly favored by the dental profession, he could also understand why some members of the public, Mrs. McColl in particular, might be passionately opposed to the action of the Water Authority in assuming the right to improve public well-being without consulting the public in the first case. The Authority's legal duty to provide "wholesome" water for public consumption which was both safe and pleasant to drink, did not, he said, extend to their right to safeguard public health by chemical means.1. Mrs. McColll felt so strongly about the fluoride issue that she eventually________ .A. took the local council to courtB. had a physical fight with the judgeC. urged the authority to apologizeD. spent much money removing the chemical2. According to what the judge said in the passage, adding fluoride to the water________ .A. wasn't proved to be harmfulB. was the duty of the local authorityC. was strongly poised by dentistsD. was surely beneficial to the public3. The word "wholesome" in the last paragraph can be best replaced by the word "________".A. clearB. poisonousC. healthyD. recycled4. Form the passage we learn that people like Mrs. McColl are more concerned about________ .A. the improvement of their personal healthB. the problem of unemployment in their communityC. the chemicals to be used for the improvement of water qualityD. their right to be informed of the authorities' decisionsPassage 3It's great fun to explore new places—it feels like an adventure, even when you know you're not the first to have been there. But make sure not to get lost or waste time going round in circles.● Do the map reading if you're being driven somewhere. It'll be easier if you keep turning the map so it follows the direction you're traveling in. Keep looking ahead so that you can give the driver lots of warning before having to make a turn, or you'll have to move to the back seat.● Get a group of friends together and go exploring. You'll need a good map, a compass, a raincoat, a cell phone to call for help in case you get lost, and a bit of spare cash for emergencies. Tell someone where you're going before you set out and let them know what time you expect to be back. The test is not in getting lost, not in seeing how fast you can go, so always stick together, waiting for slower friends to catch up.● See if your school or a club organizes orienteering activities, in which you needa map and a compass to find your way. This can be done as a sport, with teams trying to find the way from A to B(and B to C, etc. )in the fastest time, or simply as a spare-time activity. Either way, it's not only good fun, but a great way to keep fit.1. Sitting beside the driver, you should ________ .A. keep looking at the map to find a place to go toB. move to the back seat if feeling uncomfortableC. look ahead to see where there's a turnD. direct the driver when necessary2. Why do you need to tell someone your exploration plan before setting out________ ?A. To be saved in case of an accident.B. To get information when in danger.C. To share the fun with him/her in exploration.D. To tell him/her what's going on with the group members.3. The text mainly talks about ________ .A. the fun of explorationB. what to bring for explorationC. the way to use a map in explorationD. how to prevent getting lost in explorationPassage 4Only a few people in Toronto have the luck to live within walking distance from their workplace. For the rest of us, commuting (长途上下班) is a rather unpleasant daily necessity. So how do you avoid a traffic jam in Toronto? You can do it in the old way and listen to one of the radio stations that give regular updates about the traffic situation in Toronto's streets. Seeing the big picture of Toronto's traffic and knowing when and where heavy traffic occurs is a must. From my own experience, there are situations where a quick decision can help you make it in time for an event or a meeting. That's why we prepared three short videos showing the overall traffic situation in Toronto from dawn to night. You can click them and watch. With the help of "Google Maps", where you can watch the live traffic density all over the world and average traffic data based on past conditions, we are able to provide you with traffic maps for a typical (平常的) Friday.Friday traffic in Toronto is quite fast in the early morning, with only a few hot spots showing up at the major junctions (交叉点) at 7:00 am. The morning traffic jam starts light at 7:30 and the traffic gradually slows down to reach a breaking point at 8:30. The roads are quite free afterwards, only Allen Road is likely to be jammed around lunchtime from 11:30 am to 12:00. It comes as no surprise that Friday afternoon brings heavy traffic as early as 1:30 pm, mainly on the Don Valley Parkway. You won't have a good time getting away from the city from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm, as there is a good chance to get caught in a traffic jam. The traffic in Toronto is quiteheavy on a Friday night. I hope you will have a nice Friday night in the city and a safe journey home this Friday!1. Where is this passage taken from?A. A TV programme.B. A radio programme.C. A travel booklet.D. A website.Passage 5Most British parents give their teenagers pocket money. 阅读理解训练题(七十四)ABefore a new airliner goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests that are more important than all the others. In the first test, a modern airliner must fly at very high altitudes. Air must be pumped into the place so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air, the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure on a small window, for example, is like a huge foot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to crack (爆裂), the plane would explode in the sky.
