REQUIREMENTSThe following may be made requirements when the purchaser specifies them to be applicable.S1.Materials for High-Temperature ServiceS1.1Unless an H grade has been ordered, this supplemen-tary requirement shall be specified for ASME Code applica-tions for service above1000°F[540°C].S1.2The user is permitted to use an austenitic stainless steel as the corresponding H grade when the material meets all requirements of the H grade including chemistry, annealing temperature, and grain size(see Section6).S1.3The user is permitted to use an L grade austenitic stainless steel for service above1000°F[540°C],subject to the applicable allowable stress table of the ASME Code, when the material meets all requirements of this specification and the grain size is ASTM No.7or coarser as determined in accordance with Test Methods E112.The grain size shall be reported on a Certified Test Report.S2.Corrosion TestsS2.1Intergranular corrosion tests shall be performed by the manufacturer on sensitized specimens of Types304L,316L, 321,347,and348,and for the other austenitic grades,on specimens representative of the as-shipped condition. All austenitic stainless steels shall be capable of passing inter-granular corrosion tests in the as-shipped condition.Tests shall be performed in accordance with Practice E of Practices A262.S3.Product AnalysisS3.1An analysis shall be made by the manufacturer on a sample from one bar in each lot as defined in Specification A484/A484M.The analysis shall meet the requirements of Table1.In the event of failure, the lot represented shall be rejected except that,at the option of the manufacturer, each bar in the lot may be tested for acceptance.Product analysis tolerance provisions do not apply.S4.Material for High Cycle Fatigue ServiceS4.1The mechanical properties of bars furnished in lengths under20ft[6m]shall be determined by testing one end of each bar.Bars furnished in lengths of20ft[6m]and over shall be tested at each end.S5.Material for Optimum Resistance to Stress Corrosion CrackingS5.1This supplementary requirement is to be referenced when austenitic stainless steels are to be purchased with solution-annealing as thefinal operation and with no subse-quent cold drawing permitted.Straightening is permitted as a final operation to meet the straightness requirements of Speci-fication A484/A484M unless specifically prohibited by the purchaser.APPENDIX(Nonmandatory Information)X1.RATIONALE REGARDING DEFINITION OF SOLUTION ANNEALINGX1.1It is generally recognized that austenitic stainless steels are solution annealed by heating to a temperature that dissolves(takes into solution)chromium carbides and quench-ing rapidly so that the chromium carbides will not participate in the grain boundaries, which could cause susceptibility to intergranular corrosion in a critically corrosive environment. Thus, solution annealing also can be accomplished for non-stabilized grades by taking advantage of hot rolling tempera-tures(which always exceed solution annealing temperature requirements),maintaining hot rollingfinishing temperatures well above minimum solution annealing requirements, and immediately quenching integral with hot rolling.Stabilized grades(with columbium or titanium added)cannot be handled this way, since they would become destabilized due to colum-bium or titanium carbide solution, without subsequent reheat-ing.X1.2For Boiler Code applications involving temperatures at which optimum resistance to creep is desired, the larger grain size of material solution annealed by reheating is generally desired. For that reason,a minimum grain size has been required of the H grades(created for optimum elevated temperature properties),and a mandatory grain size test and report has been added for the non–H grades so that the information is available for those desiring to reclassify a non–H grade to H grade.X1.3To satisfy the concerns of inadvertent assignment of fine grained material to elevated temperature applications, special marking has been added for material that meets the requirements of Supplementary Requirement S1.X1.4A mandatory test for susceptibility to intergranular corrosion has been added for material solution annealed bythealternative method so that a history of data can be accumulated,as has been done in the past for material solution annealed byreheating.SUMMARY OF CHANGESCommittee A01.17has identified the location of selected changes to this standard since the last issue,A479/A479M–06,that may impact the use of this standard.(Approved June15,2006.)(1)Added304,304L,316,316L to Table2for the strain-hardened condition.Committee A01.17has identified the location of selected changes to this standard since the last issue,A479/A479M–05a, that may impact the use of this standard.(Approved March15,2006.)(1)Corrected typographical errors in placement of footnotes inTable2.Committee A01.17has identified the location of selected changes to this standard since the last issue,A479/A479M–05,thatmay impact the use of this standard.(Approved Sept.1,2005.)(1)Substantial general revision of the text to refer require-ments as listed in Section3to the corresponding requirementsof A484/A484M.Committee A01.17has identified the location of selected changes to this standard since the last issue,A479/A479M–04,that may impact the use of this standard.(Approved March1,2005.)(1)S31727,S32053,and S32506added to Tables1and2.Heat treatment requirements added to4.1and4.2.ASTM International takes no position respecting the validity of any patent rights asserted in connection with any item mentioned in this ers of this standard are expressly advised that determination of the validity of any such patent rights, and the riskof infringement of such rights, are entirely their own responsibility. This standard is subject to revision at any time by the responsible technical committee and must be reviewed everyfive years and if not revised, either reapproved or withdrawn.Your comments are invited either for revision of this standard or for additional standardsand should be addressed to ASTM International Headquarters.Your comments will receive careful consideration at a meeting of theresponsible technical committee, which you may attend. If you feel that your comments have not received a fair hearing you shouldmake your views known to the ASTM Committee on Standards,at the address shown below. This standard is copyrighted by ASTM International,100Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA19428-2959, United States.Individual reprints(single or multiple copies)of this standard may be obtained by contacting ASTM at the aboveaddress or at610-832-9585(phone),610-832-9555(fax),or service@(e-mail);or through the ASTM website().--``,`,,,`,,`,,`,`,`,`,,,``,`,`-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---。

connection with the use of this information. The reader is advised that the material contained herein should not be used or relied on for any specific or general applications without first securing competent advice.4/081INTRODUCTIONThis designer handbook has been written to provide the designer, engineer, specification writer, producer and user of STAINLESS STEEL with a listing of all the current ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)standards. These standards are listed by mill shape (BAR,SHEET,WIRE,etc.)and by product (bolts, fittings).Stainless types are also listed, along with a selection of applicable society and military specifications.ACKNOWLEDGMENTAn original version was initially published by the Committee of Stainless Steel Producers,American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI),Washington,D.C.,and was used, with thanks,as a basis for this updated handbook. The 2001Annual Book of ASTM Standards,Sections 1and 13were used as the reference base for listed ASTM specifications.GENERAL INFORMATIONStainless steel is not a single alloy, but rather the name applies to a group of iron based alloys containing a minimum of 10.5%chromium.Other elements are added and the chromium content is increased to improve corrosion resistance and/or enhance mechanical properties. There are over 50stainless steel types originally recognized by the AISI and are detailed in a designer handbook,“Design Guidelines for the Selection and Use of Stainless Steel,”available from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).The assumption is made that the reader is well aware of the various types of stainless steels including the five metallurgical classifications (austenitic,ferritic,martensitic,austenitic/ferritic-or-duplex,andprecipitation hardening).Where possible, these five classifications are generally shown with austenitic first. In some cases the ASTMreference is to the content rather than the classification. In those cases the basic content is listed (i.e.,iron-chromium-nickel).Specifications by type are listed by the types generally in use and do not cover all the stainless steel types that areavailable.ASTM STAINLESS STEEL STANDARDS
