Being the first to declare your love can be nerver racking(紧张)and risky and can leave you feeling as vulnerable as a turtle with no shell. But is the person who says it first really in a position of weakness? Doesn’ t it pay to hold back, play it cool and wait until the other half has shown their hand fast?A really good relationship should be about being fair and being equal," says psychologist Sidney Crown. "But love is seldom equal. " All. relationships go through power struggles but, he says, if a love imbalance continues for years, the rot will set in. "That feeling of ’ I’ ve always loved you more’ may be subverted(颠覆,破坏) for a time, but it never goes away completely and it often emerges in squabbling(大声争吵). " In love, at least, the silent, withholding type is not always the most powerful. "The strongest one in a relationship is often the person who feels confident enough to talk about their feelings," says educational psychologist Ingrid Collins. Psychosexual therapist Paula Hall agrees. "The one with the upper hand is often the person who takes the initiative. In fact, the person who says ’ I love you’ first may also be the one who says ’I’ m bored with you’ first. " Hall believes that much depends on how "I love you"is said and the motivation of the person saying it. "Is it said when they’ re drunk? Is it said. before their partner files off on holiday, and what it really means is ’ Please don’ t be unfaithful to me’ ? By saying ’ I love you’, they really saying’ Do you love me?’ If so, wouldn’t it just be more honest to say mat.Collins agrees that intention is everything. "It’s not what is said, but how it’ s said. What it comes down to is the sincerity of the speaker.”51. But at about age 15 or so, the men voluntarily began cutting down their nightly sleep time because of pressures from school, work, and other activities. These men tended to view their nightly periods of unconsciousness as bothersome interruptions in their daily routines. In general, these “short sleeps” appeared ambitious, active, energetic, cheerful, conformist(不动摇) in their opinions, and very sure about their career choices. They often held several jobs at once, or workers full-or part-time while going to school. And many of them had a strong urge to appear “normal” or “acceptable” to their friends and associates. When asked to recall their dreams, the “short sleepers” did poorly. More than this, they seemed to prefer not remembering. In similar fashion, their usual way of dealing with psychological problems was to deny that the problem existed, and then to keep busy in the hope that the trouble would go away. The sleep patterns of the “short sleepers” w ere similar to, but less extreme than, sleep patterns shown by many mental patients categorized as manic(疯人). The “long sleepers” were quite different indeed. Baekeland and Hartmann report that these young men had been lengthy sleeps since childhood. They seemed to enjoy their sleep, protected it, and were quiteconcerned when they were occasionally deprived of their desired 9 hours of nightly bed rest. They tended to recall their dreams much better than did the “short sleepers.”Many of the “long sleepers” were shy, anxious, introverted (内向), inhibited (压抑), passive, mildly depressed, and unsure of themselves (particularly in social situations). Several openly states that sleep was an escape from their daily problems.1. According to the report,______.A) many short sleepers need less sleep by natureB) many short sleepers are obliged to reduce their nightly sleep time because they are busy with their workC) long sleepers sleep a longer period of time during the dayD) many long sleepers preserve their sleeping habit formed during their childhood2. 阅读理解Unit 1(1)Memory Lane Isn't What It Used to BeAbout this time every year, I get very nostalgic. Walking through my neighborhood on a fall afternoon reminds me of a time not too long ago when sounds of children filled the air, children playing games on a hill, and throwing leaves around in the street below, I was one of those children, carefree and happy. I live on a street that is only one block long. I have lived on the same street for sixteen years. I love my street. One side has six houses on it, and the other has only two houses, with a small hill in the middle and a huge cottonwood tree on one end. When I think of home, I think of my street, only I see it as it was before. Unfortunately, things change. One day, not long ago, I looked around and saw how different everything has become. Life on my street will never be the same because neighbors are quickly growing old, friends are growing up and leaving, and the city is planning to destroy my precious hill and sell the property to contractors. It is hard for me to accept that many of my wonderful neighbors arc growing old and won't be around much longer. I have fond memories of the couple across the street, who sat together on their porch swing almost every evening, the widow next door who yelled at my brother and me for being too loud, and the crazy old man in a black suit who drove an old car. In contrast to those people, the people I see today are very old neighbors who have seen better days. The man in the black suit says he wants to die, and another neighbor just sold his house and moved into a nursing home. The lady who used to yell at us is too tired to bother anymore, and the couple across the street rarely go out to their front porch these days. It is difficult to watch these precious people as they near the end of their lives because at one time I thought they would live forever. The ―comings and goings‖ of the younger generation of my street are now mostly ―going‖ as friends and peers move on. Once upon a time, my life and the lives of my peers revolve around home. The boundary of our world was the gutter at the end of the street. We got pleasure from playing night games, or from a breathtaking ride on a bicycle. Things are different now, as my friends become adults and move on. Children who rode tricycles now drive cars. The kids who once played with me now have new interests and values as they go their separate ways. Some have gone away to college, a few got married, two went into the army, and one went to prison. Watching all these people grow up and go away only makes me long for the good old days.Perhaps the biggest change on my street is the fact that the city is going to turn my precious hill into several lots for new homes. For sixteen years, the view out of my kitchen window has been a view of that hill. The hill was a fundamental part of my childhood life; it was the hub of social activity for the children of my street. We spent hours there building forts, sledding, and playing tag. The view out of my kitchen window now is very different; it is one of tractors and dump trucks tearing up the hill. When the hill goes, the neighborhood will not be the same. It is a piece of my childhood. It is a visual reminder of being a kid. Without the hill, my street will be just another pea in the pod. There was a time when my street was my world, and I thought my world would never change. But something happened. People grow up, and people grow old. Places change, and with the change comes the heartache of knowing I can never go back to the times I loved. In a year or so, I will be gone just like many of my neighbors. I will always look back to my years as a child, but the place I remember will not be the silent street whose peace is interrupted by the sounds of construction. It will be the happy, noisy, somewhat strange, but wonderful street I knew as a child.Statements1. By saying ―nostalgic‖, the writer means that he misses his parents very much.2. The writer feels sentimental every time he walks along his street every year when autumn comes.3. The writer has been living on the same street for sixteen years since he was born.4. The writer finds it hard to accept the fact that many of his good neighbors are moving out.5. The lady who used to yell at the writer and his brother for being too loud has ceased to live.6. The writer thinks of the past all the more when he sees those who had grown up with him leave the neighborhood they grew up in.7. None of the writer’s friends and peers still lives on the street now.8. The biggest change on the writer's street is removing the hill to make way for residential development.9. When the writer says that his street will be another pea in the pod, he means that his street will have some new attractions.10. The writer will move out of his street like many of his neighbors in a year or so.答案: 1-5 F T N F F 6-10 T F T F T1)记忆里是不是有什么它曾经是每年这个时候,我非常怀念。

英语阅读理解带翻译10篇精选大全英语阅读理解带翻译10篇:给予Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world withoutgetting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, andthat my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”

Decoding the Secrets of Ancient Egyptian HieroglyphsHieroglyphs are an ancient writing system used by the Egyptians thousands of years ago. These pictorial symbols were carved into stone walls or written on papyrus scrolls. For centuries, hieroglyphs remained a mystery to archaeologists and historians, as their meaning and pronunciation was lost over time. However, in 1799, a discovery made by a French soldier paved the way for the decipherment of hieroglyphs.During the French campaign in Egypt, a soldier named Pierre-Francois Bouchard found the Rosetta Stone, a large rock inscribed with three scripts: Greek, hieratic, and demotic. The Greek inscription provided the key to understanding hieroglyphs. This monumental discovery allowed scholars to eventually decipher the hieroglyphic system. The English linguist and Egyptologist Jean-Francois Champollion played a crucial role in deciphering hieroglyphs. Using the Rosetta Stone as a guide, he focused on the Greek text and compared it to the hieroglyphs. He realized that certain hieroglyphs corresponded to the sounds of Greek words. By connecting the ancient Egyptian writing system to a known language, Champollion was able to unlock the secrets of hieroglyphs and bring ancient Egyptian history to life.Hieroglyphs are a complex writing system with over 700 different symbols. They can represent objects, concepts, or sounds. Some symbols are phonetic, representing the sounds of the Egyptianlanguage. Others are logographic, representing complete words or phrases. Additionally, there are determinative hieroglyphs that provide context and clarify the meaning of other symbols.Unlocking the meaning of hieroglyphs has allowed historians to gain a deeper understanding of the ancient Egyptians. Through these symbols, we now know about their religious beliefs, daily life, and communication methods. Hieroglyphs have also revealed valuable information about Egypt's rich history, including the reign of pharaohs, the construction of pyramids, and the role of women in society.Learning to read hieroglyphs is like solving a puzzle. Each symbol has its own meaning, but together, they form a coherent message. It requires careful observation and knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. Today, many universities offer courses in Egyptology that teach the basics of hieroglyphs.Deciphering hieroglyphs has brought the past back to life. It has allowed us to discover and appreciate the wonders of ancient Egypt. Through the efforts of archaeologists, historians, and linguists, we can now understand the remarkable civilization that existed thousands of years ago.

V. Reading Comprehension (15%)AIt was 3.21 a. m. when nine-year-old Glenn Kreamer awoke to the smell of burning. Except for the crackling (爆裂声)of flames somewhere below there was not a sound in the two-storey house at Baldwin, Long Island. With his father away on night duty at a local factory, Glenn was worried about the safety of his mother, his sister Karen, 14 and his 12-year-old brother Todd. He ran downstairs through the smoke-filled house to push and pull at Karen and Todd until they sat up. Then he helped each on through the house to the safety of the garden. There, his sister and brother, taking short and quick breaths and coughing, collapsed on the lawn. The nine-year-old raced back into the house and upstairs to his mother's room. He found it impossible to wake her up. Mrs. Kreamer, a victim of the smoke, was unconscious, and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden. But the boy remained calm and, as a fireman said later, "acted with all the self-control of a trained adult."On the bedroom telephone, luckily still working, Glenn called his father and, leaving Mr. Kreamer to telephone the fire brigade and ambulance service, got on with the task of saving his mother.First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. Then, with a wet cloth around his head he went back to the garden. He could hear the fire engine coming up, but how would the firemen find his mother in the smoke-filled house where flames had almost swallowed up the ground flo or?Grasping firmly a ball of string from the garage, Glenn raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother's room. Tying one end of the string to her hand he ran back, laying out the string as he went, through the hall and back out into the ga rden.Minutes later he was telling fire chief John Coughlan :"The string will lead you to mother." Mrs. Kreamer was carried to safety as the flames were breaking through her bedroom floor.71.Why did Glenn run downstairs first?A.He wanted to find out what was happening. Normally, only two methods of transport are in use, namely road or rail, Unfortunately, both of these may have an effect on the general public, since they are sure to pass near, or even through, heavily populated areas.Second, there is the problem of waste. All nuclear power stations produce wastes that in most cases will remain radioactive for thousands of years. It is impossible to make these wastes nonradioactive, and so they must be stored in one of the inconvenient ways that scientists have invented. For example, they may be buri ed under the ground, or dropped into deserted mines, or sunk in the sea. However, these methods do not solve the problem, since an earthquake could easily break the containers.Third, there may occur the danger of a leak (泄漏) or an explosion at the power s tation. As with the other two dangers, this is not very likely, so it does not provide a serious objection to the nuclear program. However, it can happen.Separately, these three types of dangers are not a great cause for worry. Taken together, though, the probability of disaster (灾难) is extremely high.75. Which of the following if FALSE?A. It is possible that a leak or an explosion occurs at a power station.B. It is unusual for radioactive materials to be transported across land.C. The containers are likely to be broken by an e arthquake.D. Nuclear wastes remain dangerous in most cases for many years.76. Every night, he would go onto the roof outside his window to see th e wonders of the sky.“What excited me most was whether there were planets(行星)in other solar(太阳的)systems where life might exist, ”he says. “I decided to try to find planets orbiting(沿…轨道运行)other stars like our Sun.”And he did. “My fellow researche r, Paul Butler, and I found our first planet in 1995, ”Dr. Marcy says. “We worked for ten years without finding anything! But we stuck with it, and our patience paid off. ”Since then, the two scientists have discovered 65 of the more than 100 planets found orbiting other stars. Dr. Marcy and Dr. Butler also spotted the first “family”of three planets. In June 2002 they announced another discovery: a Jupiter-like(像木星一样的)planet orbiting star 55 Cancri. At first, the two researchers found only planets that orbit close to stars. Recently, the scientists found planets farther out. The planet orbiting 55 Cancri is a major breakthrough: it is the first sighting of a large gas planet about the same distance from the star as Jupiter is from the Sun.Why is this important? Scientists think that life on Earth may exist because of two special features(特征)in our solar system. The first is Jupiter.“Because it’s so big, Jupiter pulls comets and asteroids(小行星), or they all come and hit the Earth. ”Dr. Marcy explains. “Without Jupiter, life on Earth would likely have been destroyed. ”A second feature is that Earth is a rocky planet where liquid water, which is necessary for life, can exist. Unlike gas planets, rocky planets like Earth have surfaces where water can gather in pools and seas, which may support life. A huge space exists between the Jupiter-like planet and two other planets that lie close to 55 Cancri. Is there an Earth-like planet in the space, too small for us to notice? If so, says Dr. Marcy, “We would have two striking similarities to our solar system: a Jupiter-like planet and an Earth-like planet. And there may be life! ”83. What can we learn about Dr. Marcy from the passage?A. He is fond of watching Jupiter.B. He is from a scientist family.C. He dislikes working with Paul Butler.D. He is interested in finding life in outer space.84.
Living in Iowa and trying to become a photographer specializing in landscape (风景) can be quite a challenge, mainly because the corn state lacks geographical variation.Although landscapes in the Midwest tend to be quite similar, either farm fields or highways, sometimes I find distinctive character in the hills or lakes. To make some of my landscape shots, I have traveled up to four hours away to shoot within a 10-minute time frame. I tend to travel with a few of my friends to state parks or to the countryside to go on adventures and take photos along the way.Being at the right place at the right time is decisive in any style of photography. I often leave early to seek the right destinations so I can set up early to avoid missing the moment I am attempting to photograph. I have missed plenty of beautiful sunsets/sunrises due to being on the spot only five minutes before the best moment. One time my friends and I drove three hours to Devil’s Lake, Wisconsin, to climb the purple quartz (石英) rock around the lake. After we found a crazy-looking road that hung over a bunch of rocks, we decided to photograph the scene at sunset. The position enabled us to look over the lake with the sunset in the background. We managed to leave this spot to climb higher because of the spare time until sunset. However, we did not mark the route (路线) so we ended up almost missing the sunset entirely. Once we found the place, it was stressfulgetting lights and cameras set up in the limited time. Still, looking back on the photos, they are some of my best shots though they could have been so much better if I would have been prepared and managed my time wisely.4. How does the author deal with the challenge as a landscape photographer in the Midwest?A. By teaming up with other photographers.B. By shooting in the countryside or state parks.C. By studying the geographical conditions.D. By creating settings in the corn fields.5. What is the key to successful landscape photography according to the author?A. Proper time management.B. Good shooting techniques.C. Adventurous spirit.D. Distinctive styles.6. What can we infer from the author’s trip with friends to Devil’s Lake?A. They went crazy with the purple quartz rock.B. They felt stressed while waiting for the sunset.C. They reached the shooting spot later than expected.D. They had problems with their equipment.7. How does the author find his photos taken at Devil’s Lake?A. Amusing.B. Satisfying.C. Encouraging.D. Comforting.

Passage1Reading leadership literature, you’d sometimes think that everyone has the potential to be an effective leader.
I don’t believe that to be true. In fact, I see way fewer truly effective leaders than I see people stuck in positions of leadership who arc sadly incompetent and seriously misguided about their own abilities.
Part of the reason this happens is a lack of honest self-assessment by those who aspire to(追求)leadership in the first place. We've all met the type of individual who simply must take charge.
One young man was secretly in love with a girl, one of his fellow-office workers. Being a man of few words and not good at expressing his feelings, he did not know how to unbosom himself of his love for her.unbosom1.vt.
”这部分的翻译不宜这样“…colleague, working in the same office.”
译作not good at speaking/making speeches 似不妥,建议译作not good at expressing his feelings。
“表达他的爱慕之意”,译作express his love for her似不够精彩,我们用unbosom himself of his love to her。

Mark Allen
