So many of us hold on to little resentments that may have stemmed from an argument, a misunderstanding, or some other painful event. Stubbornly, we wait for someone else to reach out to us—believing this is the only way we can forgive or rekindle (重新激起) a friendship or family relationship. An acquaintance of mine whose health isn’t very good recently told me that she hasn’t spoken to her son in almost three years. “Why not?” I asked. She said that she and her son had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldn’t speak to him again unless he called first. When I suggested that she be the one to reach out, she resisted initially and said, “I can’t do that. He’s the one who should apologize.” She was literally willing to die before reaching out to her only son. After a little gentle encouragement, however, she did decide to be the first one to reach out. To her amazement her son was grateful for her willingness to call and offered an apology of his own.As is usually the case when someone takes the chance and reaches out, he wins. Whenever we hold on to our anger we turn “small stuff” into really “big stuff”in our minds. We start to believe that our positions are more important than our happiness. They are not. If you want to be a more peaceful person you must understand that being right is almost never more important than allowing yourself to be happy. The way to be happy is to let go and reach out. Let other people be right. This doesn’t mean that you’re wrong. Everything will be fine. You’ll experience the peace of letting go as well as the joy of letting others be right. You’ll also notice that as you reach out and let others be “right” they will become less defensive and more loving toward you. They might even reach back. But if for some reason they don’t that’s okay too. You will have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world and certainly you’ll be more peaceful yourself.1. In the sentence “Stubbornly we want for someone else to reach out to us...”the phrase “reach out” is closest in meaning to ______.A. offer helpB. be in pursuit ofC. offer an apologyD. offer one’s hand2. According to the passage, the author’s friend never spoke to her son for three years because ______.A. she had got an argument with her daughter-in-lawB. she had disagreed about her son’s marriageC. she had got an argument about her daughter-in-lawD. she had disliked her son’s wife for many years3. By telling the story about a mother and her son, the author wants us to learn that ______.A. it’s fine to be the first one to apologizeB. his friend is very stubbornC. if taking the chance we’ll all winD. position is more important than happiness4. Which of the following is NOT the reason for people to be unwilling to apologize first?A. People believe that they are always right.B. People always wait for others to offer an apology first.C. People consider the position more important than happiness.D. People want to get an inner satisfaction.5.The purpose of the passage is to ______.A.instruct the readers how to apologizeB.teach the readers how to gain inner peaceC.inform the readers the importance of being forgivingD.tell the readers to reach out first when there is resentment答案:1.[C]词义推断题。

Visual impairment(视觉障碍)carries with it a reduced or restricted ability to travel through one’s physical and social environment until adequate orientation and mobility skills have been established.Because observational skills are more limited,self-control within the immediate surroundings is limited. The visually impaired person is less able to anticipate hazardous situations or obstacles to avoid.Orientation refers to the mental map one has of one’s surroundings and to the relationship between self and that environment. The mental map is best generated by moving through the environment and piecing together relationships, object by object,in an organized approach. With little or no visual feedback to reinforce this mental map,a visually impaired person must rely on memory for key landmarks and other ndmarks and clues enable visually impaired persons to affirm their position in Space.Mobility,on the other hand,is the ability to travel safely and efficiently from one point to another within one’s physical and social environment.Good orientation skills are necessary to good mobility skills.Once visually impaired students learn to travel safely as pedestrians(行人)they also need to learn to use public transportation to become as independent as possible. To meet the expanding needs and demands of the visually impaired person, there is a sequence of instruction that begins during the preschool years and may continue after high school. Many visually impaired children lack adequate concepts regarding time and space or objects and events in their environment.During the early years much attention is focused on the development of some fundamental concepts, such as inside or outside,in front of or behind, fast or slow, movement of traffic, the variety or intersections, elevators or escalators, and so forth. These concepts are essential to safe, efficient travel through familiar and unfamiliar settings, first within buildings, then in residential neighborhoods, and finally in business communities.1.How can we increase the visually impaired person’s ability to travel through his physical and social environment?A.By helping him develop adequate orientation and mobility skills.B.By teaching him to learn observational skills.C.By warning him of hazardous situations or obstacles.D.By improving his visual ability.2.The visually impaired person’s position in space.A.is not determined by memory but by physical landmarks and cluesB.is located in relation to other items in his mental mapC.enables him to construct the mental mapD.reinforces the mental map of his surroundings3.Mobility skills which the visually impaired person is learning refer to theability.A.to travel as a dependent touristB.to travel as a pedestrian and a passengerC.to travel as a pedestrian with a companyD.to travel within the safe physical and social environment4.In the passage, the author insists that.A.visually impaired children go to school for survivalB.the needs and demands of visually impaired children expandC.visually impaired children acquire the fundamental concepts for safe mobilityD.preschool children receive the instruction in the concepts of time and space or objects and events5.What is the author mainly talking about in the passage?A.Visual impairment and memory.B.The visually impaired person’s physical and social environment.C.Mental development of the visually impaired person.D.Orientation and mobility of the visually impaired person.译文:有视觉障碍的人如果没有掌握足够的定位和移动技能,他们在自然和社会环境中的行走能力会减弱或受到限制。

In some ways, the United States has made spectacular progress.Fires no longer destroy 18000buildings as they did in the Great Chicago Fire of1871,or kill half a town of2400people,as they did the same night in Peshtigo,Wisconsin.Other than the Beverly Hill Supper Club fire in Kentucky,in1977,it has been four decades since more than100Americans died in a fire. But even with such successes, the United States still has one of the worst fire death rates in the world.Safety experts say the problem is neither money nor technology, but the indifference of a country that just will not take fires seriously enough. American fire departments are some of the world’s fastest and best equipped. They have to be.The United States has twice Japan’s population,and40times as many as fires. It spends far less on preventing fires than on fighting them. And American fire-safety lessons are aimed almost entirely at children, who die in disproportionately large numbers in fires but who, contrary to popular myth, start very few of them.Experts say the fatal error is an attitude that fires are not really anyone’s fault. That is not so in other countries, where both public education and the law treat fires as either a personal failing or a crime.Japan has many wood houses;of the estimated48fires in world history that burned more than10000buildings,Japanhas had27.Penalties for by negligence can be as high as life imprisonment. In the United States, most education dollars are spent in elementary schools. But the lessons are aimed at too limited an audience;just9percent of all fire deaths are caused by children playing with matches. The United States continues to rely more on technology than laws or social pressure. There are smoke detectors in85percent of all homes. Some local building codes now require home sprinklers.New heaters and irons shut themselves off if they are tipped.41.The reason why so many Americans die in fires is that.A.they took no interest in new technologyB.they did not attach great importance to preventing firesC.they showed indifference to fighting firesD.they did not spend enough money on fire facilities42.Although the fire death rate has declined, the United States.A.still has the worst fire death rate in the worldB.is still alert to the fire problemC.is still training a large number of safety expertsD.is still confronted with the serious fire problem43.It can be inferred from the passage that.A.fire safety lessons should be aimed at American adultsB.American children have not received enough education of fire safety lessonC.Japan is better equipped with fire facilities than the Untied StatesD.America’s large population accounts for high fire frequency44.In what aspects should the United States learn from Japan?A.Architecture and building material.cation and technology.ws and attitude.D.All of the above.45.To narrow the gap between the fire death rate in the United States and that in other countries, the author suggests.A.developing new technologyB.counting more on laws and social pressureC.placing a fire extinguisher in every familyD.reinforcing the safeness of household appliances答案解析在某些方面,美国取得了令人瞩目的成就。

Andrea had never seen an old lady hitchhiking(搭车)before. However, the weather and the coming darkness made her feel sorry for the lady. The old lady had some difficulty climbing in through the car door, and pushed her big brown canvas shopping bag down onto the floor under her feet. She said to Andrea,in a voice that was almost a whisper,“Thank you,dearie-I’m just going to Brockbourne”.Something in the way the lady spoke, and the way she never turned her head, made Andrea uneasy about this strange hitchhiker. She didn’t know why,but she felt instinctively that there was something...wrong,something odd,something... dangerous. But how could an old lady be dangerous? It was absurd.Careful not to turn her head,Andrea looked sideways at her passenger. She studied the hat,the dirty collar of the dress, the shapeless body, the arms with their thick black hairs...Thick black hairs?Hairy arms?Andrea’s blood froze. This wasn’t a woman. It was a man.At first, she didn’t know what to do.Then suddenly,an idea came into her racing, terrified brain.Swinging the wheel suddenly, she threw the car into a skid (刹车),and brought it to a halt.“My God!”she shouted,“A child!Did you see the child?I think I hit her!”The“old lady”was clearly shaken by the sudden skid,“I didn’t see anything, dearie,”she said.“I don’t think you hit anything.”“I’m sure it was a child!‘insisted Andrea.’Could you just get out and have a look?Just see if there’s anything on the road?”She held her breath.Would her plan work?It did.The passenger slowly climbed out to investigate. As soon as she was out of the vehicle,Andrea gunned the engine and accelerated madly away, and soon she had put a good three miles between herself and the awful hitchhiker. It was only then that she thought about the bag lying on the floor in front of her.Maybe the bag would provide some information about the real identity about the man.Pulling into the side of the road,Andrea opened the heavy bag curiously. It contained only one item——a small hand axe, with a razor-sharp blade. The axe and the inside of the bag were covered with the dark red stains of dried blood. Andrea began to scream.46.Andrea allowed the hitchhiker to take a ride in her car mainly because.A.the hitchhiker was an old womanB.she was curious about the old ladyC.the lady had a heavy bagD.she knew the old lady47.What made Andrea afraid when she looked at the old lady?A.She had a shapeless body.B.She had a harsh voice.C.She wore a dirty dress.D.She had hairy arms.48.Andrea suddenly stopped the car because.A.she thought she had hit a child on the roadB.she skidded on some ice on the roadC.she wanted to trick the passenger into getting outD.she couldn’t concentrate and nearly had a crash49.Andrea looked in the passenger’s bag to.A.examine what was in itB.find out where the passenger livedC.50.A.B.C.D.“我可以肯定那是一个孩子。

同等学力英语阅读理解练习及解析2-学苑教育
同等学力英语阅读理解练习及解析(二)-学苑教育Millions of Americans lie awake at night counting sheep - or have a stiff drin kor pop an allergy pill, hoping it will make them drowsy. But experts agree all that self-medicating is a bad idea, and the causes of chronic insomnia remain mysterious.Almost a third of adults have trouble sleeping, and about 10 percenthave symptoms of daytime impairment that signal true insomnia. Sufferers readi lycite the resulting problems: walking around in a fog, as memory and other cognitive functions slow. Dozingoff at the wheel or at work. Depression. Lack o fenergy. But for all the complaints, scientists know surprisingly little about what causes chronic insomnia, its health consequences and how best to treat it,a panel of specialists brought together by the National Institutes of Health concluded Wednesday. Two things are clear, the panel found: Chronic insomnia is a major publichealth problem. And too many people are using unproven therapies, even while there are a few treatments that do work. The hope is that the report will dispel some of what panelist Dr. Sean Caples of the Mayo Clinic decried as "misinformation and myths."Among the panel's findings:_Cognitive/behavioral therapy - a psychology-based treatment that trains p eople to reduce anxiety and take other sleep-promoting steps - is very effectiv e, and doesn't cause side effects. But it can be hard to findhealth providers trained in the techniques. Insomniacs should check with board-certified sleep specialists and psychologists._Newer prescription sleep pills called Sonata, Ambien and Lunesta work without many of the side-effect concerns of older agents known as benzodiazepin es.One study of Lunesta showed effectiveness with six months of use, but moreresearch on long-term use of all three is needed, as chronic insomnia canlinger for years._The most commonly used treatments are alcohol and over-the-counter sedatin gantihistamines like Benadryl. Alcohol use actually disrupts quality sleep, andantihistamines can cause lingering daytime sedation and other cognitive problem s._The most common prescription insomnia medicine is an older, sedating antidepressant called trazodone, even though there's no good evidence that it offers more than a two-week benefit, and it comes with side effects._There is no evidence backing the effectiveness of the popular dietary supplements melatonin and valerian to fight insomnia.1.One of most effective ways to deal with choric insomnia is_______.A. to have a stiff drinkB. to pop an allegry pillC. to sleep and get up earlyD. Cognitive/behavioral therapy2. Which of the following symptoms does NOT belong to insomnia?A. Walking around in a fogB. Lack of energyC. nap at noonD. cognitive functions loss3. Nuclear power’s danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word:radiation.Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it,partly because it cannot be detected by human senses. It can’t be seen or heard,or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us.There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can’t detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver.Similarly,we can’t sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things. At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being outright by killing masses of cell in vital organs. But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe.If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit,and if they are killed outright.Your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in a deformed way. They can grow into cancer.Sometimes this does not show up for many years. This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation.Seriousdamage can be done without the victim being aware at the time that damage has occurred.A person can be irradiated and feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten,or twenty years later as a result.Or a child can be born weak or liable to serious illness as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents.Radiation can hurt us.We must know the truth.1.According to the passage, the danger of nuclear power lies in.A.nuclear mysteryB.radiation detectionC.radiation levelD.nuclear radiation2.Radiation can cause serious consequences even at the lowest level.A.when it kills few cellsB.if it damages few cellsC.though the damaged cells can repair themselvesD.unless the damaged cells can reproduce themselves3.The word“significant”in paragraph3most probably means.A.responsibleB.meaningfulC.fatalD.harmful4.Radiation can hurt us in the way that it can.A.kill large numbers of cells in main organs so as to cause death immediatelyB.damage cells which may grow into cancer years laterC.affect the healthy growth of our offspringD.All of the above5.Which of the following can be best inferred from the passage?A.The importance of protection from radiation cannot be over-emphasized.B.The mystery about radiation remains unsolved.C.Cancer is mainly caused by radiation.D.Radiation can hurt those who are not aware of its danger.译文:核能对健康、安全甚至生命本身构成的危害可以概括为一个词:辐射。

Want a glimpse of the future of health care?Take a look at the way the various networks of people involved in patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient-no matter where he or she may be.Online doctors offering advice based on standardized symptoms are the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis(telemedicine)will be based on real physiological data from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using an off-the-shelf(现成的)PDA(personal data assistance)such as a Palm Pilot plus a mobile phone,it is perfectly feasible to transmit a patient’s vital signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment in a first-aid kit(急救包),the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past.Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster response —especially after earthquakes. Overall, the trend is towards providing global access to medical data and expertise. But there is one problem. Bandwidth is the limiting factor for transmitting complex medical images around the world—CT scans being one of the biggest bandwidthconsumers. Communications satellites may be able to cope with the short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes, wars or famines. But medicine is looking towards both the second-generation Internet and third-generation mobile phones for the future of distributed medical intelligence.Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should usher in(迎来)an era when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, expert opinion and diagnosis are common.51. The basis of remote diagnosis will be .A. standardized symptoms of a patientB. personal data assistanceC. transmitted complex medical imagesD. real physiological data from a patient52.
