大学英语(三)-1习题及答案

大学英语(三)-1习题及答案

大学英语(三)-1习题及答案大学英语(三)-1习题及答案一、阅读理解Although the United States covers so much land and the land produces far more food than the present population needs, its people are by now almost entirely and urban society. Less than a tenth of the people are engaged in agriculture and forestry (林业) , and most of the rest live in or around towns, small and large. Here the traditional picture is changing: every small town may still be very like other small towns, and the typical small town may represent a widely accepted view of the country, but most Americans do not live in small towns any more. Half the population now lives in some thirty metropolitan areas (large cities with their suburbs) of more than a million people each ---- a larger proportion than in Germany or England, let alone France. The statistics (统计) of urban and rural population should be treated with caution because so many people who live in areas classified as rural travel by car to work in a nearby town each day. As the rush to live out of town continues, rural areas within reach of towns are gradually filled with houses, so that it is hard to say at what moment a piece of country becomes a suburb. But most and more the typical American lives in a metropolitan rather than a small town environment.(4.0 分)1. If now America has 250 million people, how many of them are engaged in agriculture and forestry?A.About 25 million.B.More than 25 millionC.Less than 25 millionD.Less than 225 million得分:4(4.0 分)2. Which of the following four countries has the smallest proportion of people living in metropolitan areas?A.United States.B.Germany.C.France.D.England.得分:4(4.0 分)3. What’s the meaning of the word “metropolitan” in the middle of the passage?A.Of a large city with its suburbs.B.Of small and large towns.C.Of urban areas.D.Of rural areas.得分:4(4.0 分)4. According to the passage, what can we learn about small towns in the United States?A.Most small towns become gradually crowdedB.Small towns are still similar to each other.C.As the traditional picture is changing, towns are different.D.Small towns are turning into large cities.得分:4(4.0 分)5. Why is it hard to say when a piece of country becomes a suburb?A.Because they are the same.B.Because the rush takes place too quickly.C.Because the process is gradual.D.Because more and more Americans live in metropolitan areas.得分:4For any Englishman, there can never be any discussion as to who is the world’s greatest dramatist (剧作家). Only one namecan possibly suggest itself to him: that of William Shakespeare. Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight, of the work of our greatest writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings that have become part of the common property of the English-speaking people. Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we used, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of Hamlet and complained that it was full of well-known proverbs and quotations.Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, makes full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal use of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand. There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it. Such a study is well worth the effort (it is not, of course, recommended to beginners) even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day.(4.0 分)6. English people _______.A.have never discussed who is the world’s greatest dramatistB.never discuss any issue concerning the world’s greatest dramatistC.are sure who is the world’s greatest dramatistD.do not care who is the world’s greatest poet and dramatist得分:4(4.0 分)7. What does the word “proverb” mean?A.Familiar sayings.B.Shakespeare’s plays.C.Complaints.D.Actors and actresses.得分:4(4.0 分)10.Why is it worthwhile to study the various ways in which Shakespeare used English?A.English words have changed a lot since Shakespeare’s timeB.By doing so one can be fully aware of the richness of the English language.C.English words are now being used in the same way as in Shakespeare’s time.D.Beginners may have difficulty learning some aspects of English usage.得分:4二、单选题(3.0 分)1. Passage one If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season toseason. Your are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of year. A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington, concluded from other men’s work and his own among peoples in different climates and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in summer. Spring appears to be the beat period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man’s mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking According to the passage, man’s intelligence_________-(A)Stays the same throughoutthe year(B) Varies from day to day(C) Changes with the seasons(D) Changes from yearto yearEllsworth Huntington decided that climate and temperature have________(A) a great effect oneveryone’s intelligence(B) ?some effect on mostpeople’s intelligence(C) some effect on a fewpeople’s intelligence(D)no effect on mostpeople’s intelligence Ellsworth Huntington’s conclusion was based on____-(A) variations of his own mental abilities fromseason to season(B)theresults of research done by him and otherscientists amongpeoples in different climates(C)detailed records of temperaturechanges in differentplaces(D) detailed recordsof different ways of thinking amongpeoples on different climatesWhy does the author say summer is a good time to take a long vacation from thinking? ____(A) Because a long vacation in summer helps to improvepeople’s mental power.(B) Because people tend to be less creativeduring summer.(C)Because summer is a good time for outdooractivities(D)Because mental exertion in the summer heat taxes too muchof people’s energy. The central idea of this passage is______(A) man’s mental abilities change fromseason to season(B) man’s intelligence varies from place toplace(C) manshould take a long vacationin summer(D) if you want to do creativethinking,go to acool place难度:中 分值:5.02. Warm water freezes more quickly than cold. Sir Francis Bacon said that almost fourhundred years ago. But few people believed him – till 1970. In that year Canadian scientist George Kell proved the English scholar was right. Dr. Kell filled an open pail with cold water. He exposed both to the same low temperature. The warm water froze first. The lack (缺少) of covers on the pails was the secret. Some of the warm water changed to vapor. (水蒸气) It evaporated (蒸发) into the air. This meant that less of the warm water was left to freeze. And so the warm water froze faster than the cold water – even though it had a greater temperature drop to make. On November 19,1863, Abraham Lincoln went to Gettysburg in Pennsylvania to speakat the National Soldiers Cemetery The Civil War was still going on. There was much criticism of President Lincoln at the time He was not at all popular. He had been invited to speak at Gettysburg only out of courtesy. The principal speaker was to be Edward Everett, a famous statesman and speaker of the day. Everett was a handsome man and very popular everywhere. It is said that Lincoln prepared his speech on the train while going to Gettysburg. Late that night, alone in his hotel room and tire out, he again worked briefly on the speech. The next day Everett spoke first. He spoke for an hour and 57 minutes. His speech was a perfect example of the rich oratory of the day. Then Lincoln rose. The crowd of 15,000 people at first paid little attention to him. He spoke for only nine minutes. At the end there was little applause. Lincoln turned to a friend and remarked, “I have failed again.” On the train back to Washington he commented sadly, “That speech was a flat failure, andthe people are disappointed. Some newspapers at first criticized the speech. But little by little, as people read the speech, they began to understand better. They began to appreciate its simplicity and its deep meaning. It was a speech which only Abraham Lincoln could have made. Today , every American school child learns Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address by heart. However, chances are that you don't act on your impulse(冲动), but let it pass instead. You know that to commit the action is wrong in some way and that other people will not accept your behavior.Perhaps the most interesting thing about the phenomenon of taboo(禁忌的) behavior is how it can change over the years within the same society, how certain behavior and attitudes once considered taboo can become perfectly acceptable and natural at another point in time. One of the newest taboos in American society is the topic of fat. Unlike many other taboos, fat is a topic that Americans talk about constantly. It's not taboo to talk about fat; it's taboo to be fat. The "in" look is thin, not fat. In the work world, most companies prefer youthful-looking, thin(苗条)executives(经理)to sell their image as well as their products to the public. The fat person, on the other hand, is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy, self-discipline, and self-respect. After all, people think, how can people who care about themselves, and therefore the way they look, permit themselves to become fat? In an image-conscious society like the U. S. , thin is "in", fat is "out".1. From the passage ,we knom that taboo is .A. a strong desire to do something strange or terribleB. a crime committed on impulseC. behavior considered unacceptable in society's eyesD. an unfavorable impression left on other people2.Based on the ideas presented in the passage we can conclude "being fat"_______ in American society.A. will always remain a tabooB. is no longer a taboo any moreC. has long been a tabooD. has not been considered a taboo by most people3.The topic of fat is_______many other taboo subjects.A. the same asB. more popular thanC. different fromD. less often talked about than4. The word "in", fat is "out" mean_______.A. thin is "inside", fat is "outside"B. thin is "diligent", fat is "lazy"C. thin is "beginning", fat is "ending"D. thin is "fashionable", fat is "unfashionable"5.The expression image-conscious society can be replaced by_______.A. fast-developing society which is built on a clear imageB. the society in which image has been attached importance toC. the society whose image has been reined becaused of moneyD. very imaginative society with nice appearance2、判断对错On average, American kids aged 3 to 12 spend 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more than they did in 1981. They also did more household work and participated in more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet (芭蕾舞). Involvement in sports, in particular, rose almost 50% from 1981 to 1997: boys now spend an average of four hours a week playing sports; girls log hall that time. All in all, however, children‟s leis ure time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%“Children are affected by the same crunch (危机) that affects their parents,” says Sandra Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children‟s timetable. A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home. (Nevertheless, children in both double-income and “male breadwinner” households spent comparable amounts of time interacting with their parents 19 hours and 22 hours respectively. In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.)All work and no play could make for some very messed-up kids. “Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself,” says T. Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with their peers, but kids ages 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours aweek engaged in it.The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing “free time” watching television. But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. If they‟re spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren‟t replacing it with reading. Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spent just over an hour a week reading. Let‟s face it, who‟s got the time?1.The reason given by Sandra Hofferth for the time crunch is partially true.( )2. A child develops better if he has more time participating in school activities. ( )3.The auther is concerned about the fact that American kids are engaged in more and morestructured activities. ( )4.Most children will turn to reading with TV sets switched off. ( )5.Sandra Hofferth means children have little time to play with their parents. Invariably a few hands would go up.“What did you learn in that course?” I’d ask.“Well, the main thing was learni ng how to face an audience ... not to be inhibited( 拘谨 )... not to be nervousExactly, when you take a course in public speaking nowadays, you don’ t hear much about grammar and vocabulary. Instead, you’ re taught how not to be afraid or embarrassed, how to speak without a prepared script, how to read out to the live audience before you. Public speaking is a matter of overcoming your long-standing nervous inhibitions. The same is true of writing. The point of the whole thing is to overcome your nervous inhibitions, to break through the invisible barrier that separates you from the person who’ ll read what youwrote. You must learn to sit in front of your typewriter or dictating machine and read out to the person at the other end of the line.Of course, in public speaking, with the audience right in front of you, the problem is easier. You can look at them and talk to them directly. In writing, you’ re alone. It needs an effort of your experience or imagination to take hold of that other person and talk to him or her. But that effort is necessary -- or at least it’ s necessary until you’ve reached the point when you quite naturally and unconsciously “talk on paper(1). When rainwater collects on the surface of the ground, some of it evaporates and some of it sinks into the earth. The remainder begins to flow downhill, commencing its lengthy journey form brook to stream to lake, or to a river that will carry it to the sea.As water flows along the ground, it picks up sand, pebbles, even boulders. It uses them to gnaw at the sides and bottom of its channel, gradually loosening more earth.By this process enormous amounts of mud and rock are moved from the land to the sea. Each year the Mississippi River carries 730 million tons of solid matter into the Gulf of Mexico. This constant hauling of land into the sea is lowering the United States’ average height above sea level at a rate of about one foot every 9000 years. If erosion continues at the same rate, the United States will be worn completely down to sea level in about 23 million years.(1). The Average Height of the United StatesD. The Mighty Raindrop4. It is a great truth because once we truly understand and accept it. Then life is no longer difficult. Most people do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent ( 代表 ) a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation. What makes life difficult is the process of facing and solving problems and it is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness or, loneliness or regret or anger of fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Those things that hurt, instruct." It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.(1). Its first use was as a shade (遮光物)against the sun! Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, way back in the 11 century BC.We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And therewas a strange thing connected with its use: it became asymbol of honour and authority. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those inhigh office. In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrellawas in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that thefirst persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late 16th century. And again it was considered a symbol of power and authority. To manypeople, the cause is clear: we eat too much. But scientific experiments do little to support this idea. Going back to the America of 1910, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines muchless, and didn't watch television.Several modern studies, besides, have shown that fatter people donot eat more on average than thinner people. In fact, some research work, such as the 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers, reports that fat people eat less than thinner people on average. Studies show that thin people are more active than fat people.A study by the research group at Standford University School of Medicine found the following fact: the more the man ran, the greater body fat he lost. The more he ran, the greater was his need for food. Choose the one you think is the best answer.Passage 1Have you ever been afraid to talk back when you were treated unfairly? Have you ever bought something just because the salesman talked you into it? Are you afraid to ask someone for a date? Many people are afraid to assert themselves. Dr. Alberti, author of “Stand Up, Speak Out, and Talk Back”, thinks it’s because their self-respect is low. “Our whole set-up is designed to make people distrust themselves,” says Alberti. “There ‘s always a ‘superior’ around: a parent, a teacher, a boss who ‘knows better.’ These superiors often gain when they chip away at your self-image.”But Alberti and other scientists are doing something to help assert themselves. They offer “assertiveness training” courses-—AT for short. In the AT course people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so. They learn to be aggressive without hurting other people. In one way, learning to speak out is to overcome fear. A group taking an AT course will help the timid person to lose his fear. But AT uses an even stronger motive—the need to share. The timid person speaks out in the group because he wants to tell how he feels.Whether or not you speak up for yourself depends on your self-image. If someone you face is more “important” than you, you may feel less of a person. You start to doubt your own good sense. You go by the other person’s label. But, why should you? AT says you can get to feel good about yourself. And once you do, you can learn to speak out.1. The problem the writer talks about is that ______.A. some people buy things thy don’t wantB. some people are afraid of arguing for themselvesC. there are too many ‘superiors’ aroundD. some people think too highly of themselves2. The cause of the problem talked about in this passage is that _______.A. some people have a low self-imageB. there is always someone around who “knows better”C. salesmen talk people into buying things they don’t wantD. people don’t share enough in common3. The effect of our set-up is often to _______.A. make people distrust themselvesB. make things more favorable for “superiors”C. keep people from knowing as much as their “superiors” knowD. help people to learn to speak up for their rights4. AT is one solution to the problem in this passage. One thing AT doesn’t do is ______.A. use the need of people to shareB. show people they have a right to be themselvesC. help people overcome fearD. help people to assert themselves even if others suffer5. A good title for this passage could be _______.A. Assertiveness TrainingB. Loss of Self-respectC. The Importance of Human RightD. Share Your Feeling With OthersPassage 2Everywhere we’ve traveled we’ve been asked, “Can we achieve an advanced, high-technology economy- -- and still stay Chinese? Or Mexican? Or Russian? Must nations surrender their cultural uniqueness to the next wave of technological and social change?”If, in fact, Web-televiewers some day will be able to pick up a Brazilian variety show,a Polish newscast, a Yugoslavian cartoon and a Japanese soap opera, all translated into the local language; if fashions and foods come from several different countries and if religious ideas come in from many different parts of the would, what happens to the original culture? Can any nation keep its identity under this large amount of foreign images and ideas? Are all destined to melt into the so-called “global village” with all the same qualities and shared experience of villagers?Where economic development is still based on the export of cheap muscle labor and mass production, the answer may be “perhaps”. Low-tech mass production societies need low-tech mass media. But where economies move beyond the assembly line and the traditional manufacturing techniques to the new, knowledge-based forms of wealth creation, the answer will be a strong “no”.The Chinese can remain uniquely Chinese by choosing, from all the elements of world culture, selection of ideas, images and knowledge. The combination chosen by chian will be different from that chosen by France or Germany or the United States. In this sense, the Chinese will be totally, unmistakably Chinese----___ not France, German or American. But they will no longer be the Chinese of the past. They will be the Chinese of the future. In short, despite the near-term dominance of the producers of mass culture like Disney, the long-term future of culture is not a situation where all cultures seem the same but an immense, complex and valuable mixture of individual national traditions, fashions, and beliefs.6. What’s the main idea of this passage?A. Information technologies bring us into a “global village”.B. People from different cultures can share many things on the Internet.C. For example, psychologists are interested in why some things make you sad, but others make you happy. They want to know why some people are shy, but others are quite talkative. They also want to know why people do the things that they do. They test intelligence.Psychologists deal with the minds and behavior of people. Your mind consists of all your feelings, thoughts, and ideas. It is the result of one part of the brain called the cerebrum (大脑). Your behavior is the way you act or conduct yourself. Examples of behavior include shouting, crying, laughing and sleeping.Several people have been instrumental in the field of psychology. Whilhelm Wudt set up the first psychological laboratory in Lenpzig, Germany, in 1879. Ivan Pavlov, a Russian, is noted for his experiments with dogs in which he studied their relaxes ( 反射作用) and reactions. Around 1990, Sigmund Freud stated his theory that people try to repress any memories or thoughts that they believed were not good.Psychologists should not be confused with psychiatrists. Psychiatrists deal only with mental illness. They are medical doctors who treat people.11. A good title for this selection is .A. Studying the MindB. Feelings and Behavior of Human beingsC. Choose the one you think is the best answer.Passage 1I was only eight years old when the Second World War ended, but I can still remember something about the victory celebrations in the small town where I lived. We had not suffered much from the war there, though like most children of my age, I was used to seeing bombed houses in the streets and the enormous army lorries passing through. But both at home and at school I had become accustomed to the phrases "before the war" and "when the war's over". "Before the war," apparently, things had been better, though I was too young to understand why, except there had been no bombs then, and people had eaten things like ice cream and bananas, which I had only heard of. When the war was over, we would go back to London, but this meant very little to me. I did not remember what London was like. What I remember now about VE Day was the afternoon and the evening. It was a fine May day.I remember coming home about five o'clock. My father and mother came in about an hour later. After dinner I said I wanted to see the bonfire, so when it got dark my father took me to the end of the street. The bonfire was very high, and some people had collected some old clothes to dress the unmistakable figure with the moustache they had put on top of it. Just as we arrived, they set light to it, the flames rose and soon covered the "guy". Everyone was cheering and shouting, and an old woman came out of her house with two chairs and threw them on the fire to keep the fire going.I stood beside my father until the fire started to go down, not knowing what to say. He saidnothing either. He had fought in the First World War and may have been remembering the end of that. At last he said, "Well, that's it, son. Let's hope that this time it really will be the last one".1. Where did the narrator live before the Second World War?A. BrazilB. In LondonC. In EuropeD. In the countryside2. By saying "Let's hope that this time it really will be the last one, " the father meant that .A. he hoped there would be no more wars in the worldB. he wished the Second World War had not happenedC. he hoped people would not build any more bonfiresD. he wished people would learn many lessons from the warPassage 2The game of golf has become more popular each year. Golf players enjoy spending time on the open, grassy areas on which the game is played. Yet, several international organizations say golf courses (高尔夫球场) damage the environment. One environment group, the Worldwatch Institute, has published a report about the problems with golf courses. It says studies show that most golf courses use large amounts of chemical poison and fertilizers (化肥). The grass often grows in sandy soil which fail to absorb the chemicals. So, the chemicals pollute natural water supplies.Golf courses also require a lot of water. A study shows that one golf course in Thailand uses as much water as that needed by 6 000 people.Environmentalists also fear the expansion of golf courses will destroy natural areas. In Vietnam, the government sold a protected rainforest, Thu Duc forest near Saigon, to a golf course developer. In Laos, a Thai company recently won approval for building a golf course and a hotel in one of the country’s few remaining underdeveloped areas. The World watch Institute says golf courses are the fastest growing kind of land developmentin the world. There are about 25 000 golf courses throughout the world.Together, they already cover an area about the size of Belgium (比利时).6. Golf courses may bring many problems EXCEPT .A. consuming much waterB. destroying natural areasC. poisoning sandy soilsD. polluting water suppliesPassage 3By adopting a few simple techniques, parents who read to their children can substantially increase their children’s language development. It’s surprising, but true. How parents talk to their children makes a difference in children ‘s language development. If a parent encourages the child to actively respond to what the parent is reading the child’s language skills increase.A study was done with two-to three-year-old children and their parents. Half of the thirty children participated in the experimental study; and half acted as the control group. In the experimental group, the parents were given a two-hour training session in which they were taught to ask open-ended questions rather than. “Is the doggie running away?” Experiment parents were also instructed in how to expand on their children’s answers, how to suggest alternative possibilities, and how to praise correct answers. At the beginning of the study, the children did not differ on measures of language development, but at the end of one mouth, the children in experimental group tested 5.5 mouths ahead of the control group on a test of verbal expression and vocabulary. Nine mouths later, the children in the experimental group still showed an advance of 6 mouths over the children in control group.11. Which of following can be inferred this passage?A. Children who talk a lot are more intelligent.B. Parents who listen to their children can teach them more.C. Active children should read more.D. Parents’ good questions help a lot in development children’s verbal ability.12. Children who read actively act six mouths older.15. At the beginning of the study, the children did not differ on measures of language development, but at the end of one months, the children in the experimental group tested 5.5 months ahead of the control group on a teat of verbal expression and vocabulary. Online HomeWork_U5B3-1I. Reading ComprehensionSection A Fast Reading1 Maintaining a marriage is the responsibility of both you, the wife and mother, and your husband. Living together is already a challenge for couples faced with new situations, a new environment, and new responsibilities, but these challenges tend to increase when you become parents. It is not easy to adjust immediately to the new situation especially when you become the proud parents of two or more at the same time. Then the adjustments are even tougher. While you may not even have enough energy to care for the infants and keep the house clean, you may find that you have even less energy left with which to maintain your marriage.2 Are you aware that statistics show that parents of multiples have a higher stress level and tend to argue more often which leads to a higher divorce rate? It is also seen that these children are more likely to suffer some form of child abuse than other children who don‟t come from homes with multiple s.3 There are many reasons why the marriage struggles during the years of bringing up multiple-birth children. One reason is that when you start feeling overwhelmed with stress, little things start adding up, sleep deprivation, fatigue, the need for personal time and depression can all become too overwhelming to handle, especially when you get no co-operation from your spouse. This can be overcome by talking openly with your spouse and sharing responsibilities. Understanding each other is important to help maintain your marriage especially during the tough times.4 Caring for your children is another area where fathers can and should get involved. Talk with your spouse about getting more involved, and even if he was not born with the skills of parenting, let him make an effort to learn through experience. Be specific about areas where you would like his help. Make him feel he is as capable as you of caring for your babies. Make your spouse feel that he is important and needed. Make him realize that you believe in him as a father. By doing that he will feel proud and self confident in assisting at home. Remember not to push him, give him the chance and time to learn, and the freedom to do things in his own way, even if that means he will make some mistakes. Help him to realize that it‟s not only about helping out at home, but rather more, it is a strong contribution towards maintaining a good married life.5 It is vital for you both, as parents of multiples, to have an outlet to release and share your frustrations, to keep your senses clear and maintain a great relationship with the children as well as each other. When you handle situations wisely, you can strengthen both your marriage and your family.1Statements based on the passage:1. Young couples find it easy to live together because they are faced with newsituations and responsibilities.2. A couple may have less energy to maintain their marriage if they have severalchildren at the same time to take care of.3. Cooperation and understanding between a couple are important to help maintaintheir marriage during the years of bringing up multiples.4. When bringing up multiple-birth children, mother will have more sleep, fatigue andpersonal time.5. Only fathers who were born with the skills of parenting should get involved incaring for children.6. It is not easy for a woman to bring up multiples on her own without the help of her spouse.7. Fathers can also be good at looking after children with a little training.8. Mothers should be tolerant when fathers make some mistakes in assisting at home.9. Fathers‟ involvement in caring for children helps maintain a good married life.10. It is unnecessary for parents to release their frustrations and stresses every nowand then.Section B Passage ReadingPassage 1On the morning of September 11th, I boarded the train from Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan just as usual and went to the Body Positive office in the South Street Seaport of Lower Manhattan. While I was leaving the subway at 8:53 am, a man ran down the street screaming, “someone just bombed the World Trade Center.” Those around me screamed and shouted “No!” in disbelief. However, being an amateur photographer, and thinking that I might be able to help out, I ran directly toward the WTC. I stopped just short of the WTC at a corner and looked up. There2before me stood the gaping hole and fire that had taken over the first building. I stood there in shock taking pictures, wanting to run even closer to help out, but I could not move. Soon I saw what looked like little angels floating down from the top of the building. I began to cry when I realized that these “angels”—in fact, desperate office workers—were coming down, some one by one, some even holding hands with another. Could I actually be seeing this disaster unfold with hundreds of people around me crying, screaming and running for safety? As I watched in horror, another white airliner came from the south and took aim at the South Tower. As the plane entered the building, there was an explosion and fire and soon debris (碎片) began to fall around me. It was then that I realized that we were being attacked and that this was just not a terrible accident. Yet, I still could not move, until I was pushed down by the crowd on the street, many now in a panic running toward the water, as far from the WTC as they could possibly get. All around me were the visual reminders of hundreds of people running in panic. There were shoes, hats, briefcases, pocketbooks, newspapers, and other personal items dropped as hundreds of people ran for safety.Much has been written about the disaster already. We have learned so much in such a small amount of time about appreciating life. In some way we must move forward, bury the dead, build a memorial for those lost, and begin the coping and healing process for the survivors. But healing takes time. Some have been able to head right back to work, others seek counseling, while others remain walking through the streets with expressionless faces. However, we are all united in our grief.11. In the last paragraph, all of the following are mentioned EXCEPT that ______.A. life should be appreciatedB. people are deep in grief, but they are unitedC. we should stop and consider carefully what to doD. work should be done about the dead and the livingPassage 2On Mother‟s Day when we visited Mom in the hospital, she told us she believed the multiple rounds of chemotherapy (化疗), radiation, ICU (intensive care unit) stays, and surgeries had been worth it because they had bought her some time. “But now,it‟s time to go home and …take care of business‟.”Shortly after coming home, Mom announced that she planned to make a quilt(拼接缝制的被子), which she had never done. When I asked why, she said, “Dying is boring, and it‟s never too late to learn something new.” The idleness associated with incapacity was madding to her. Over the next few months Mom worked diligently on the quilt, a simple pattern called “Grandmother‟s Garden”.As she picked up a piece of calico (印花布), she would say, “This reminds me of the dress you wore your first day of school,” or “This blue was your father‟s favorite color.” Each recollection opened the door for a conversation about those things that she wanted to share. As the quilt grew, Mom weakened. It was a poignant reminder that time was passing too quickly. At last, she became too sick to work on the quilt.Mom died before the quilt was finished, but it was all right. She had creatively used it as a tool to teach me her final lesson, that the “business” of dying is something best done at home and not in an intensive care unit. This is because the real “business” of dying is reaffirming relationships that have given one‟s life meaning.Without my knowledge, two Christmases later, my husband‟s parents finished the quilt for me. It was the most wonderful gift imaginable. 4Mom‟s quilt has served our family in many ways she would have liked — picnic cloth, moving pad, bedspread, and wrap for her great-grandson. Each time, the quilt reminds me of the bond between generations and the imp ortant “business” of dying.16. According to Paragraph 1, which of the following is true?A. Reading ComprehensionSection A Fast Reading1 At a primary school in Manning, a small town 65 miles east of Columbia, South Carolina, second grade teachers Holly Garneau and Anna Lynne Gamble are convinced that segregating elementary-age boys and girls produces immediate academic improvement---in both genders. The two created a teaching plan for the upcoming semester. But first, Garneau and Gamble need the parents‟ approval. That‟s where David Chadwell, South Carolina‟s coordinator of single gender education, comes in.2 Just as he‟s explained to hundreds of parents and teachers across the state, Chadwell patiently walks the Manning crowd through how boys and girls perceive the world.3 “They see differently.Literally,” he begins. Male and female eyes are not organized in the same way, he explains. The composition of the male eye makes it attuned to motion and direction. “Boys interpret the world as objects moving through space,” he says. “The teacher should move around the room constantly and be that object.”4 The male eye is also drawn to cooler colors like silver, blue, black, grey, and brown. It‟s no accident boys tend to create pictures of moving objects like spaceships, cars, and trucks in dark colors instead of drawing the happy colorful family, like girls in their class.5 The female eye, on the other hand, is drawn to textures and colors. It‟s also oriented toward warmer colors---reds, yellow, oranges---and visuals with more details, like faces. To engage girls, Chadwell says, the teacher doesn‟t need to move as much, if at all. Girls work well in circles, facing each other. Using descriptive phrases and lots of color in overhead presentations or on the chalkboard gets their attention.6 Boys and girls also hear differently. “When someone speaks in a loud tone, girls interpret it as yelling,” Chadwell says. “They think you‟re mad and can shut down.” Girls have a more finely tuned aural(听觉的) structure; they can hear higher frequencies than boys and are more sensitive to sounds. He advises girls‟ teachers to watch the t one of their voices. Boys‟ teachers should sound matter of fact, even excited.7 A boy‟s autonomic nervous system causes them to be more alert when they are standing, moving, and the room temperature is around 69 degrees. Stress in boys, he says, tends to increase blood flow to their brains, a process that helps them stay focused. This won‟t work for girls, who are more focused seated in a warmer room around 75 degrees. Girls also respond to stress differently. When exposed to threat and confrontation, blood goes to their guts, leaving them feeling nervous or anxious.8 “Boys will rise to a risk and tend to overestimate their abilities,” he says. Teachers can help them by getting them to be more realistic about results,” he says. “Girls at this age shy away from risk, which is exactly why lots of girls‟ programs began in the private sector. Teachers can help them learn to take risks in an atmosphere where they feel confident about doing so.”9 These differences can be accommodated in the classroom, C hadwell adds. “Single gender programs are about maximizing the learning.”1. It is of much help to achieve academic improvement by segregating both genders at primary-age.2. Before the teaching plan which raised by Garneau and Gamble is put into practice, it is necessary to get the students‟ parents‟ approval.3. Boys see the world as objects moving through space is due to the reason that the teacher goes around the classroom constantly.4. Girls tend to draw the happy colorful family in their class. So do the boys.5. For girls, it is enough to use descriptive phrases and lots of color on the blackboard to get their attention.6. Boys can hear higher frequencies than girls and more sensitive to sounds, because they have a finely tuned aural structure.7. In class, girls‟ teachers should watch the tone of their voice while boys‟ teachers should sound more excited.8. Stress in boys tends to increase blood flow to their brains, making them nervous or anxious.9. Boys and girls see and hear differently and respond to stress differently.10. Since boys are likely to overestimate their abilities, teachers can help them bymaking them more realistic.Section B Passage ReadingPassage 1Big Ben is one of London‟s best-known landmarks, and looks most spectacular at night when the clock faces are lighted. You even know when parliament is in session, because a light shines above the clock face. The four dials of the clock are 23 feet square, the minute hand is 14 feet long and the figures are 2 feet high. Minutely regulated with a stack of coins placed on the huge pendulum, Big Ben is an excellent timekeeper, which has rarely stopped. The name Big Ben actually refers not to the clock tower itself, but to the thirteen-ton bell hung within. The bell was named after the first commissioner of works, Sir Benjamin Hall. This bell came originally from the old Palace of Westminster, and was given to the Dean of St. Paul by William III. Before returning to Westminster to hang in its present home, it was refashioned in White Chapel in 1858. The BBC first broadcast the chimes(报时) on 31 December 1923. There is a microphone in the tower connected to Broadcasting House.During the Second World War in 1941, a bomb destroyed the Commons chamber of the Houses of Parliament, but the clock tower remained intact and Big Ben continued to keep time and strike away the hours. Its unique sound was broadcast to the nation and around the world, a welcome reassurance of hope to all who heard it.The tower is not open to th e general public, but those with a “special interest” may arrange a visit to the top of the clock tower through a guide.11. His father, supporting the decision, found a place for him in a supermarket. “You‟re lucky, Ron,” he said. “For every boy with a job these days, there‟s a dozen without.” So Ron joined the working world at 20 pounds a week. For a year he spent his days filling shelves with tins of food. By the end of that time he was looking back on his school days as a time of great variety and satisfaction. He searched for an interest in his work, with little success. One fine day instead of going to work Ron got a lift on a lorry going south. With nine pounds in his pocket, a full heart and great longing for the sea, he set out to make a better way for himself. That evening, in Bournemouth, he had a sandwich and adrink in a cafe run by an elderly man and his wife. Before he had finished the sandwich, the woman had taken him on for the rest of the summer, at 20 pounds a week, a room upstairs and three meals a day. The ease and speed of it rather took Ron‟s breath away. At quiet times Ron had to check the old man‟s arithmetic in the records of the business. At the end of the season, he stayed on the coast. He was again surprised how straightforward it was for a boy of 17 to make a living. He worked in shops mostly, but once he took a job in a hotel for three weeks. Late in October he was taken on by the sick manager of a shoe shop. Ron soon found himself in charge there; he was the only one who could keep the books.16. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. The money.B. The meals.C. The cafe.D. The job.19. How many jobs in all did Ron take in the passage?A. Six.B. Five.C. Four.D. Three.20. Ron soon found himself having some say in the shoe shop because ______.A. he knew how to keep the accounts of the businessB. he had lots of experience with shopsC. he got on well with the manager thereD. he was young and strongSection C Reading in DepthAre you single but too busy to search for love?
