The study was a project of researchers in theUnited Statesthat was ongoing for over 13 years. They asked nearly 2,300 men and women to identify 12 common smells. All the subjects were from 71 to 82 years of age. The researchers gave the adults scores, from 0 to as high as 12, based on how many smells they identified correctly.During the years of follow-up investigation, over 1,200 of the subjects died. When the study was launched, none of the adults were weak. They could walk a little under half a kilometer, climb 10 steps and independently complete daily activities. In the latest findings, the researchers noted that those with a weak nose were 30 percent more likely to die than people with a good sense of smell. The findings were reported last month in the scientific publication Annals of Internal Medicine.Honglei Chen, a doctor withMichiganStateUniversityinEast Lansing,Michigan, was the lead writer of a report on the study. He said the connection between a poor sense of smell and an increased risk of dying was limited to adults who first reported good-to-excellent health. This suggests that a poor sense of smell is an early and sensitive sign for worsening health before it is recognizable in medical tests. With a poor sense of smell, people are more likely to die of brain and heart diseases, but not of cancer or breathing disorders. The results also suggest that a poor sense of smell may be an early warning for poor health in older age that goesbeyond dementia or other neurodegenerative(神经变性的) diseases. These often signal the beginning of a weakening of the mind or body.4. What do you know about the study mentioned?A. The study involved researchers from the world.B. All the participants were of different ages.C. The study began to be performed about 13 years ago.D. 2 ,300 men and women were young and healthy.5. What was the situation like at the beginning of the study?A. More than 1,200 of the participants passed away.B. Many of the subjects were found with health problems.C. All the subjects were independent of others when walking.D. One third of the participants had a poor smell sense.6. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?A. People with a poor sense of smell have heart disease.B. You should be careful with your health if you smell poorly.C. People with a poor sense of smell won't suffer from cancer.D. Most of the elder people may have the dementia disease.7. Which is the best title for the passage?A. Strong Sense of Smell May Be Linked to Longer LifeB. Old People Tend to Have a Poor Sense of SmellC. A Number of Factors Result in Longer LifeD. Being Ill Means Losing the Sense of SmellCWhile the arts can' t stop the COVID-19 virus or the social unrest we see in the world today, they can give us insight into the choices we make when moving through crises and chaos. The arts invite everyone to think in new ways.We often experience works of art as something that's pleasing to our senses without a full understanding of the creative effort. Great art often shows us contradictions and crises, and we can learn a great deal from their resolutions(解决). Through our understanding of art, we can gain a deeper understanding of how we might overcome our own challenges. In understanding extremes of contrast, we can see the beauty in art with themes that are not simply pleasing for their magnificent features or qualities.Beethoven offers a wonderful example of moving artfully through crises and chaos. He composed his Symphony No. 9 as his hearing loss became more and more pronounced. The opening of the symphony seems to come out of nowhere, from near silence in the opening to a full expression of what many consider to be the joy of freedom and universal brotherhood with Schiller’s Ode to joy(欢乐颂). Beethoven appears to have created a work of art that not only freed him from his personal struggles, but one that also speaks to the joy of living together in peace and harmony.Have a dialogue between the two opposing parts and you will find that they always start out fighting each other until we come to an appreciation of difference—a oneness of the two opposingforces. The arts offer many lessons that can help us gain the knowledge we need to move more confidently in today’ s competitive anduncertain environment. An openness to arts-based solutions will give you more control over your future.8. What value does art have beyond pleasing people's senses?A. It brings people inner peace.B. It contributes to problem-solving.C. It reduces the possibility of crises.D. It deepens understanding of music.9. What can we learn about Beethoven's Symphony No. 9?A. It celebrates freedom and unity.B. It aims to show crises and chaos.C. It opens with Schiller's Ode to Joy.D. It is unfinished due to his hearing loss.10. What is the author's suggestion on dealing with conflicting forces?A. Leaving things as they are.B. Making a choice between them.C. Separating them from each other.D. Engaging them in a conversation.11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. How COVID-19 changes artB. Essentials of Symphony No. 9C. Moving artfully through crisesD. Joy in the eyes of BeethovenDThe connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have found positive effects. A study conductedin Youngstown,Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants. The engineers at the Massachusetts Instituteof Technology(MIT)have taken it a step further changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they’re short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater."We’re thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of thethings that we use every day,"explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow(发光)in experiments using some common vegetables. Strano’s team found that they could create a faint light for three-and-a-half hours. The light, about one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by,is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn trees into self-powered street lamps. In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a one-off treatment that would last the plant’s lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off"switch"where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source(电源)-such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway-a lot of energy is lost during transmission(传输).Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.12. What is the first paragraph mainly about?A. A new study of different plants.B. A big fall in crime rates.C. Employees from various workplaces.D. Benefits from green plants.13. What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineer?A. To detect plants’ lack of waterB. To change compositions of plantsC. To make the life of plants longer.D. To test chemicals in plants.14. What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future?A. They will speed up energy production.B. They may transmit electricity to the home.C. They might help reduce energy consumption.D. They could take the place of power plants.15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Can we grow more glowing plants?B. How do we live with glowing plants?C. Could glowing plants replace lamps?D. How are glowing plants made pollution-free?第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

U. K., when the idea of a boy attending a school of wizardry, the characters and situations came flooding into her mind. Born as Joanne, Rowling was always fascinated with fantasy stories and started writing them at a young age. It seems that young people in China are more optimistic than youth in other countries. Varkey Foundation, a UK non-profit organization, did a survey between last September and October. It asked 20,000 young people in 20 countries including China, the United States and the United Kingdom how they think and feel about the world. The survey found that 53 percent of those questioned in China thinkthe world is becoming a better place, the highest percentage among the countries surveyed. When asked why they felt hopeful for the future, 93 percent of Chinese youth think it’s because of advances in technology. Medicine, renewable energy and computing may make life in the future easier. Some 64 percent of Chinese youth also think China is a good place to live. The biggest reason(29 percent)is that China is “a country in which anyone is able to get on if they work hard”.The survey also found young people in emerging economies are more hopeful about the future than those in developed countries. Following China, Indian youth were the second most optimistic(49 percent). Those in France, Italy and Turkey are the most pessimistic. The rise of global terrorism worries them most. However, Chinese young people seem to worry about something else. As much as 82 percent of them worry about climate change. China is the only country out of the 20 in which climate change was the biggest cause of fear for future. Vikas Pota of the Varkey Foundation took this as a good thing. The young people in developed countries are worried about terrorism. DDo you always struggle to understand others’ feelings? Perhaps you should listen to your heart.According to a team of scientists at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK, people who are more aware of their own heartbeat are better at understanding others’ emotions.Researchers have long suspected that this ability is important for understanding others’ thoughts and feelings. To test this theory, the British team asked 72 volunteers to count their own heartbeats without feeling a pulse(脉搏). This aimed to see how aware they were of the feelings inside their own bodies. Then, the volunteers were shown video clips of social interactions(互动), which tested their ability to read the minds of the characters.During the clips, they were asked questions that required an understanding of the emotions of a certain character - for example, “What is Sandra feeling?” In addition, they were asked questions that did not involve any emotions, such as “What is Michael thinking?” Th ey were also askednon-social questions, like “What was the weather like that evening?”The results showed that those who had counted their heartbeats most accurately were better at answering questions relating to the characters’ emotions. However, there was no link between the ability to feel what’s going on inside your body and questions that did not involve any emotions. Punit Shah, lead author of the study, used an example to explain this: If your colleague Michael is rude toward Sandra in public, your body processes (处理)this by increasing your heart rate. This may make you feel anxious and allow you to understand that Sandra is embarrassed.“If you do not feel your heart rate increase, it may reduce your ability to understand that situation and respond a ppropriately,” Shah told The Telegraph.Researchers believed their findings mean it could be possible to make people more empathetic by training them to listen to their hearts. This also lends support to the argument that feelings are, at the very least, deeply rooted in physical sensations(感觉)).32. What does the new study find?A. People are better at understanding others’ emotions than thoughts.B. People with quicker heartbeats are more sensitive to others’ feelings.C. The ability to feel your heartbeat is important for understanding others’ thoughts.D. Your ability to feel others’ emotions is related to your ability to feel your own heartbeat.33. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the new study according to the article?A. The volunteers were asked to count their heartbeats while watching video clips.B. Researchers designed emotional, non-emotional and non-social questions.C. The volunteers were required to describe each other’s thoughts and feelings.D. Researchers trained the volunteers to listen to their hearts and observed them.34. The underlined word “empathetic” in the second-to-last paragraph probably means _________.A. willing to accept ideas that are different from your ownB. not influenced in any way by other people or thingsC. being able to understand others’ feelingsD. willing to help those in trouble35. What can be concluded from the last four paragraphs?A. We react to a situation more slowly when our heart rates increase.B. Physical sensations in our bodies are believed to cause emotional changes.C. Our ability to feel emotions is part of us and can’t be changed.D. How we feel has nothing to do with the state of our bodies.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

To try to get his peers (同龄人) to do the same, the boy from Peru came up with the idea of an eco-bank, the Bartselana Student Bank, which allows kids of all ages to become financially independent while also helping the environment.Set up in 2012, the bank is the world's first bank for kids. To become a member, a kid has to bring in at least 5 kilograms of solid waste and set a savings goal. Once accepted, all bank "partners" are required to deposit atleast one additional kilogram of recyclables on a monthly basis and observe other requirements, such as attending financial education and environmental management workshops. The waste accumulated is sold to local recycling companies, who, thanks to Jose's efforts, pay a higher-than-market rate for everything brought in by the bank members. The money received is placed in the personal account where they collect until the savings goal is reached. The account holder can then withdraw the money, or choose to leave it and continue to grow for a bigger target. "At the beginning, my teachers thought I was crazy or that a child could not undertake this type of project," Jose recalls. "They did not understand that we are not the future of the country but its present. Luckily, I had the support of the school headmaster and an assistant in my class."The boy's efforts paid off, and by 2013, the bank had over 200 members, who brought in one ton of recyclable waste. Today, the eco-bank, which now has the support of several local institutions, boasts ten educational centers. They are designed to teach the over 3,000 students, aged 10 to 18, to become financially independent, use their money wisely, and help the environment. Not surprisingly, Jose's efforts have earned him several national and international awards. On November 20, 2018, Jose won Children's Climate Prize, which comes with a medal and $5,500 in prize money and is given to a child or youth who has accomplished an extraordinary achievement for the climate or environment.4.Why did Jose set up the bank?A. Regardless of whether visitors select the carved suites or the basic ice rooms, the temperature is always set to a bone-chilling -5℃!That is why guests are advised to snuggle(蜷缩)up inside sleeping bags and wear gloves and winter hats all night. Not surprisingly, most end up spending just a single night at this unique hotel before moving on to the conventional and warmer hotels nearby.8.What does the underlined phrase"bucket list"mean in the text? ______A. An Experience Close to NatureC. A Taste of Cold:A Night in a VillageD. A Winter Destination:Sweden's Ice HotelDMost dog owners are convinced that their four-legged friends know exactly what they mean when they use certain words like sit, stay or treat. However, researchers have always wondered whether dogs really understand human speech or if they rely on other information to get the meaning. For example, does the word "fetch" form a picture of a stick or ball in the dog's mind, or does the dog bring back the object based on the owner's voice or gesture? A new study by scientists at Atlanta's Emory University seems to indicate that "man's best friend" does indeed know what the owner is saying. The researchers began by asking the owners of twelve dogs of various kinds to train their pets to identify two toys of different materials, such as a toy animal and a ball. Once the dogs had mastered the task, they took turns inside a special scanner. The owners then tested their dog's language skill by first calling out the names of the toys they had been trained to recognize and then saying meaningless words such as "bobbu" and "bodmick" while holding up random objects the dogs hadn't seen before. The scans suggested that the parts of the dogs' brains responsible for processing of sounds showed different brain patterns when they heard words they were familiar with, compared with the ones they had never heard before. While that was not enough to prove that the dogs were picturing their toys when they heard the word, it did indicate some sort of recognition. The researchers believe this is an important step forward in understanding how dogs process language.Even more interesting was that the dog's brains showed a higher level ofneural (神经) activity at the sound of unknown words. This is the exact opposite of what happens in human brains, which get more active at the sound of familiar words. The researchers say the dogs may become cheerful at the sound of new words to try to understand them in the hope of delighting their masters. "Dogs want to please their owners, and perhaps also receive praise or food," says Empty neuroscientist Gregory Burns, senior author of the study. However, though your pet may understand human speech, the scientists recommend using visual signals and smell for training. "When people want to teach their dog a trick, they often use spoken command because that's what humans prefer," Prichard says. "From the dog's view, however, a visual command might be more effective, helping the dog learn the trick faster."12.What's the purpose of the new study?A. To convince dog owners to understand their dogs.B. To advise dog owners to treat their dogs kindly.C. To prove dogs follow owners' order by listening.D. To test out how dogs get information from owners.13.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?A. Inform the result of the research.B. State the process of the research.C. Stress the importance of the research.D. Introduce the subjects of the research.14.How do human brains and dog brains react to words?A. Human brains become active at unfamiliar words.B. Dog brains become delighted at unfamiliar words.C. Human brains are not sensitive to familiar words.D. Dog brains show no response to familiar words.15.What do scientists advise the owners to do in dog training?A. Give dogs oral command.B. Teach dog new tricks.C. Involve sight and smell.D. Encourage faster learning.二、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共10.0分)I just counted how many foreign languages I've studied so far in my life andit's been twelve!I always follow my interests and find ways to put my language learning into things I'm already interested in.I like to read blogs(博客)in other languages. He silently promised himself that he would never cheat again. From that day forward,Raj kept his promise. The cheating incident served as a harsh reminder for him to stay attentive during classes,to respect the learning process, and to avoid the foolish thoughts of shortcuts.【解题导语】本文是一篇应用文。

AOn Friday morning when 53-year-old Thong Pham broke into the house through the unlocked back door, he took a steak knife from the kitchen. It was dark, and the family didn't know what Marley was barking (吠) at. Taylor, Amber and their girls Finley, 6,and Sadie, 4, soon woke up and came downstairs, too. “Well, it was dark so we couldn't see anything, only could hear Marley,” Amber recalled, saying her husband then went for the lights. “And once he turned the hall light on, we realized that the guy was holed up in the corner trying to hide.”“So I think he got to the front door and realized he couldn't get out, and by that point in time, Marley's got him cornered,”Taylorsaid. Pham slashed (砍) both Marley and Taylor, and blood went everywhere. Taylor shared a video summary to his Facebook page, where he said Marley was stabbed (刺) up to six times, mostly around the head and neck area. “And as I pulled back, blood shot out of my arm,”Taylorcontinued. “She got him pretty good and I got him pretty good in the face.”“But it was really hard because I was trying to make sure that my husband wasn't going to die,” Amber explained, adding that she was trying to protect their two girls. “When he realized that the two girls were in the house, that's when he kind of backed up and started running. "Taylorexpressed gratitude to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. And the family is thankful for their dog Marley.“She's our hero,” Amber said. “If it hadn't been for her, that guy could have gone in the...he could have gone to their rooms or something.”Tayloradded, “Yeah, I mean, the story plays out very differently if Marley's not there.”1. Why did the family come downstairs before daybreak?A. To stop a break-in.B. To lock the back door.C. To check on Marley.D. To turn the hall light on.2. What happened during the fight?A. Pham dug a hole in the corner.B. Marley was injured but bit back.C. Taylor had a backup from neighbors.D. Amber fought back to protect her girls.3. What doesTaylormainly express on his Facebook?A. Forgiveness.B. Concern.C. Anger.D. Appreciation.BAbout a month after I joined Facebook, I got a call from Lori Goler, a highly regarded senior director of marketing at eBay. She made it clear this was a business call. “I want to apply to work with you at Facebook,” she said. “Instead of recommending myself, I want to ask you: What is your biggest problem, and how can I solve it?”My jaw hit the floor. I had hired thousands of people over the previous decade and no one had ever said anything remotely like that. People usually focus on finding the right role for themselves, with the implication that their skills will help the company. Lori put Facebook’s needs front and center. It was a killer approach. I responded, “Recruiting is my biggest problem. And, yes, you can solve it.”Lori never dreamed she would work in recruiting, but she jumped in. She even agreed to trade earnings for acquiring new skills in a new field. Lori did a great job running recruiting and within months was promoted to her current job, leading People@Facebook.The most common metaphor for careers is a ladder, but this concept no longer applies to most workers. As of 2010, the average American had eleven jobs from the ages of eighteen to forty-six alone. Lori often quotes Pattie Sellers, who came up with a much better metaphor: “Careers are a jungle gym, not a ladder.”As Lori describes it, there’s only one way to get to the top of a ladder, but there are many ways to get to the top of a jungle gym. The jungle gym model benefits everyone, but especially women who might be starting careers, switching careers, getting blocked by external barriers, or reentering the workforce after taking time off. The ability to create a unique path with occasional dips, detours (弯路), and even dead ends presents great views of many people, not just those at the top. On a ladder, most climbers are stuck staring at the butt of the person above.4. Why did Lori make the call?A. She helped Facebook to solve the biggest problem.B. She wanted to make a business deal with Facebook.C. She tried to ask for a pay rise in Facebook.D. She wanted to become an employee in Facebook.5. What impressed “I” by Lori?A. Lori was good at running recruiting.B. Lori attached great importance to Facebook’s needs.C. Lori jumped in Facebook with no adequate experience.D. Lori was skilled in marketing at eBay.6. What can we infer from the passage?A. Now all people don’t tend to climb the ladder.B. None on the ladder can enjoy the great views.C. Jungle gyms offer limited exploration for employees.D. A pregnant woman, jobless, benefits little from the jungle gyms.7. What is the best title of the passage?A. It’s a Jungle Gym, Not a Ladder.B. Facebook’s Biggest Problem.C. Applying for a Job in Facebook.D. A Jungle Gym is Better than a Ladder.CWhat a day! I started at my new school this morning and had the best time. I couldn't stop laughing. My mom dropped me off at the school gates about five minutes before the bell. A little blonde girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving at me. She ran over and told me her name was Abigail. She was very nice and we became close straight away. We spent all morning together and began to talk to another girl called Stacey. The three of us sat together in class all day and we even made our way home together! It went so quickly. Our teacher told us that tomorrow we would really start learning and developing new skills.I cannot wait until tomorrow and feel as though I am really going to enjoy my time at my new school. But other birds are wishing up, evolving some seriously impressive tricks to spot the cuckoo eggs.Cuckoos are often know asparasites, meaning that they hide their eggs in the nest of other species. To avoid detection, the cuckoos have evolved so that eggs seem reproduction of those of their preferred targets. If the host bird doesn’t notice the strange egg in its nest, the little cuckoo will actually take the entire nest for itself after it comes out, taking the other eggs on its back and dropping them out of the nest.To avoid this unpleasant fate for their young, the other birds have evolved a few smart ways to spot the fakes, which we’re only now beginning to fully understand. One of the most amazing finds is that birds have an extra colour-sensitive cell in their eyes, which makes them far more sensitive to ultraviolet wavelengths and allows them to see a far greater range of colours than humans can. This allows cautious birds to detect a fake egg which might be exactly the same to our eyes.Fascinatingly, we’re actually able to observe different bird species at very different points in their evolutionary war with the cuckoos. For instance, some cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of the redstarts. The blue eggs these cuckoos lay are practically alike to those of the redstarts, and yet they are still sometimes rejected. Compare that with cuckoos who target dunnocks. While those birds lay perfectly blue eggs, their cuckoo invaders just lay white eggs with brown irregular shaped spots. And yet dunnocks barely ever seem to notice the obvious trick.Biologists suspect these more easily fooled species like the dunnocks are on the same evolutionary path as the redstarts, but they have a long way to go until they evolve the same levels of suspicion. What’s remarkable isthat the dunnocks fakes are so bad and the redstart ones so good, and yet cuckoos are still more successful with the former than the latter. It speaks to just how thoroughly a species’ behavior can be changed by the pressures of natural selection, or it might just be a bit of strategic cooperation on the part of the dunnocks. Biologists have suggested that these birds are willing to tolerate a parasite every so often because they don’t want to risk accidentally getting rid of one of their own eggs.12. This passage can be most likely found in a ________.A. science surveyB. nature magazineC. zoo advertisementD. travel journal13. What does the underlined word “parasite” in paragraph 2 most probably refer to?A. Animals that work together to raise young.B. Small harmful animals such as worms or mice.C. Animals that can adapt to changing environments.D. Animals which live on or inside other host animals.14. Which of the following is TRUE about the dunnock according to the passage?A. It is colour-blind and therefore cannot identify foreign eggs in the nest.B. It can easily remove cuckoo eggs from the nest because fakes are so bad.C. It is a host bird that is more likely to raise a cuckoo chick than the redstart.D. It is unable to evolve and hence accepts cuckoo eggs that appear in the nest.15. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?A. Dunnocks may eventually learn to recognise foreign eggs.B. Redstarts seem to be less suspicious compared to dunnocks.C. Cuckoo birds are good at taking responsibility for their own young.D. It is very easy for cuckoos to imitate the colouring of the dunnock’s egg.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
