The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and entertainment. We can find new recipes on the Internet or advice on staying healthy. We can even use it to learn a new language. We can use the Internet to keep in contact with fam ily and friends and stay in touch with issues we care about. Th e list goes on and on. So, there may be no going back to an I nternet-

teenagers. So, try to be a responsible guardian(监护人).
The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 ho urs a week online were more likely to have high blood pressur e. Hi
gh blood pressure makes your heart and blood vessels work t oo hard. Over time, this extra strain increases your risk of a h eart attack or stroke. High blood pressure can also cause hea rt and kidney disease. It is also closely linked to some form of dementia(痴呆), or a brain disease.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. I t involved 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old. One hu ndred thirty-
four of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. Re searchers say the study is the first one to connect heavy web use with high blood pressure. Other research has connected t hat heavy Internet use with health problems including anxiety, depression and obesity.
The lead researcher of the study is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. For the purpose of the study, she explains, teens co nsidered heavy Internet users were
online on average 25 hours a week. It is important for teens t
o take regular breaks from their computers or smart phones a nd to do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents limit their children’s use of the Internet to two hours a day, five days a week.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say s, 70 million, or 29%, of American adults have high blood pres sure. The CDC estimates that high blood pressure costs the United States $46 billion each year.

Adopting a new pet should be an exciting and rewarding expe rience. But just as all families are different, so are all pets. Yo u need to learn what to consider before you find your new fam ily member.
All pets require their owners’ time. Kirsten Theisen, director of pet care issues, says how much time they have to give is the top thing that they should consider when they want to adopt a pet. “If you adopt an 8-year-
old cat, she is not going to need the same amount of care as a 9-week-old-dog,”says Theisen.
Like finding the perfect partner, you want a pet that reflects yo ur interests and activity
levels. “Particularly if you want to adopt a dog, consider activi ty levels in the household,” says Theisen. “If you are a couch potato(老泡在电视机面前的
人), or if you are a homebody, look for a pet that matches th at activity level.”
Some dogs, like terriers, can be loud and noisy and demand a more active lifestyle and room to be outside. They might not f it as well in apartments as more sedentary pets. The Humane Society of the United States suggests potential owners searc h for information on the Internet and talk to other pet owners when considering what kind of pet works well with their home environment.
Some unusual pets, like tortoises(乌
龟), have long life spans, which means they will probably out live dogs and cats---
and even their human owners. They can also grow to be muc h larger than they were when they first came to live with you. Owners should accept the fact that
they need to continue to provide room for
these animals and also prepare for the animals’ futures. Theisen encourages families with children to adopt a pet. If pa rents teach children loving pet care, the lessons of responsibil ity will come naturally to children. All animals require daily car e. At the very least, there will be days or weeks when children fail to take care of their new pet and the parents have to step in.
32. According to Teisen, when people plan to adopt a pet, the y should first consider_______.
A. whether the pet is lovely or not
B. whether the pet i s active or not
C. the money that the pet will cost them
D. the amount of time they need to provide
33. The underlined word “sedentary” in Para. 4 probably mea ns “_____”.
A. inactive
B. boring
C. interesting
D. impo lite
34. Parents should adopt a pet for their children to _______.
A. improve their social skills
B. reduce their stress or loneliness
C. teach them how to respect others
D. encourage chil dhood responsibility
35. What can we learn from the text?
A. It is not a good idea to adopt unusual pets.
B. If you are a quiet person, you should adopt an active pet.
C. Pet owners should consider the future of some long-lived pets.
D. Teisen advises us to adopt an adult cat rather than a sma ll dog.

A friend asked me if I would join her in a 5km marathon(马拉
松). My first reaction was “What? A 5km marathon? Are you kidding?” I am a try-anything-at-least-
once kind of girl, even if I end up regretting it later. It sounded like a 5km marathon might hav e been one of those “regretted it later” things, but it was not!
I signed up for (报名参加)
the 5km marathon. The marathon benefited a local charity and it meant that you would help a local organization while you had fun. This was a win-
win event for me. The 5km marathon seemed fun and it was like nothing I had ever done. We arrived early in the morning to line up for the race and there was music from a cool stage. P eople were throwing colorful balloons around and the atmosphere was telling of a fun period. The staff let runners go in waves, groups of about 1000 people. Before letting them run, they counted down. You could hear them shouting 10…9…8… So exciting! When we were about to run next, we ended up being in the front row. We were getting pounded with colored powd er and loved every second of it. We counted down and ran!
I, together with other four kids, didn’t have much time to train. The good news was that I wa s not alone. A lot of people walked. Some walked fast. Some walked slowly, but they still wal ked. I fe
lt not so bad after all. The best part was that I became more active and had fun while I was d oing it. When we arrived at the destination, we were greeted by staff handing out colored pac kets. If you are considering getting more active and experiencing a 5km marathon without the pressure of winning, this is the run to sign up for. You will be so glad you did.

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and entertainment. We can find new recipes on the Internet or advice on staying healthy. We can even use it to learn a new l anguage. We can use the Internet to keep in contact with family and friends and stay in touch with issues we care about. The list goes on and on. So, there may be no going back to an In ternet-
free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say research ers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure in a n unlikely group---teenagers. So, try to be a responsible guardian(监护人).
The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week online were more lik ely to have high blood pressure. Hi
gh blood pressure makes your heart and blood vessels work too hard. Over time, this extra st rain increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke. High blood pressure can also cause heart and kidney disease. It is also closely linked to some form of dementia(痴
呆), or a brain disease.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. It involved 335 young people, fr om 14 to 17 years old. One hundred thirty-
four of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. Researchers say the study is the first one to connect heavy web use with high blood pressure. Other research has connected t hat heavy Internet use with health problems including anxiety, depression and obesity.
The lead researcher of the study is Andrea Cassidy-
Bushrow. For the purpose of the study, she explains, teens considered heavy Internet users were
online on average 25 hours a week. It is important for teens to take regular breaks from their computers or smart phones and to do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that。
