高一英语 My Father’s Hands教学设计
As Daddy’s devoted and only daughter, I noticed things about him that my brothers never mentioned or may have taken for granted. Two things in particular made Daddy more wonderful than all the
other fathers I’d ever seen or heard of —Daddy’s large, sensitive hands.
Daddy’s hands were capable. Daddy had long and nimble fingers that could sew on the missing button. They could
do my hair. They could trim the nails of my tiny fingers and toes. Those same fingers had a magical way of playing the guitar as well, making my nursery tunes the most
beautiful music I ever heard.
Daddy’s hands were also strong and useful.

Yes, these were the hands of my father — Hands with household knowledge and heavy equipment. They untiringly cared for his family through my mother’s long illnesses right up until her death.
It was obvious to me that no mother’s hands could have done better. In my little-girl eyes, my father’s ha nds were perfect. They had the strength and power to move mountains. They made the impossible possible!
……
Years later, in a small hospital lay Daddy near death, too weak to speak out loud. I sat
tearfully at his bedside. But as I held his hands, I smiled — all those delightful and unforgettable years of memories came crowding in.
I could well remember the scene where Daddy sang the old, familiar songs with his hands patting me. Peacefully settled in his arms, I sucked my thumb, feeling the rhythm of Daddy’s heartbeat
while the old rocking chair creaked back and forth. With my other hand, I would hold one of
Daddy’s large hands studying the lines and touching the rough spots. I encircled his hands with pride, although he had a split in his nail, which endeared him to me more because he got the injury when building my dollhouse.
Once again feeling every line, every callus and scar, I came to realize how much love that father’s hands had brought. I lifted them, placing the tired, now pale hands against my face. How warm they were even now, just as in my treasured yesterdays! I kissed each brown spot, reminders of his 83 years, but I did not see these brown places as “age spots”. To me they were beauty marks instead, standing for a job well done. I could no longer hold back the tears filling my eyes.
For a moment, Daddy opened his eyes as if to speak. I leaned over close to him. With a weak, concerned smile of love, his trembling fingers reached up to touch my face, wiping away the tears now running down the cheeks of his“l ittle girl.” And time stood still. Then Daddy closed his eyes, sighing one final breath.
As I looked down at the motionless hands of my dear father, I knew one thing for sure then, and I am even more sure of it now: No mother’s hands, in all the world, were ever more endearing or more beautiful than the hands of my father.

(B) Daddy’s hands were capable . Daddy had long and nimble fingers that could sew on the missing button. They could do my hair. They could carefully trim the nails of my tiny fingers and toes. Those same fingers had a magical way of playing the guitar as well, making my nursery tunes the most beautiful music I ever heard.
(C) Daddy ’s hands were also strong and useful. Wonderfully tanned from working in the sun, they looked a bit callused. There was no unfamiliar area to Daddy’s hands. They could make a delicious and colorful meal in minutes. I loved to watch in wonder as his skillful hands worked.
How do you understand the sentence “Time stood still.”?
The day that you see me old Dear son,
The day that you see me old and I am already not, have patience and try to understand me. If I get dirty when eating, if I can not dress, have patience. Remember the hours I spent teaching it to you.
If, when I speak to you, I repeat the same things thousand and one times, do not interrupt me, listen to me. When you were small, I had to read to you thousand and one times the same story until you get to sleep. When I do not want to have a shower, neither shame me nor scold me. Remember when I had to chase you with thousand excuses I invented, in order that you wanted to bath.
When you see my ignorance on new technologies, give me the necessary time and not look at me with your mocking smile. I taught you how to do so many things: to eat good, to dress well, to confront life.
When at some moment I lose the memory or the thread of our conversation, let me have the necessary time to remember, and if I cannot do it, do not become nervous, as the most important thing is not my conversation but surely to be with you and to have you listening to me. If ever I do not want to eat, do not force me. I know well when I need to and when not.
When my tired legs do not allow me walk, give me your hand the same way I did when you gave your first steps. And when someday I say to you that I do not want to live any more, and that I want to die, do not get angry, some day you will understand. Try to understand that my age is not
lived but survived.
Some day you will discover that, despite my mistakes, I always wanted the best thing for you
and that I tried to prepare the way for you. You must not feel sad, angry or impotent for seeing me
near you. You must be next to me, try to understand me and to help me as I did it when you started
living.
Help me to walk, help me to end my way with love and patience. I will pay you by a smile and by
the immense love I have had always for you.
I love you son.
