Mary had a problem that she got annoyed with everything easily. She felt bad about everything and always carried a negative thinking. She developed all these negative aspects suddenly.
One day she felt she was so miserable and requested help from her dad.
Her father comforted her and took her to the kitchen.
He asked Mary to take a potato, an egg and two spoonfuls of tea leaves. Mary was surprised, “Do you want me to cook?” Her father denied. He then put three containers on the stove and poured one cup of water in each container. Once the water started to boil, he dropped separately potato, egg, and tea leaves in each container.
Mary was totally annoyed and asked her father why to do those stupid things. He asked her to wait for a few more minutes with patience.
The impatient daughter managed to wait for around 15 minutes. The father removed the potato from the pot and placed in a plate and did the same with eggs. He poured the tea into a cup. Then he placed the two plates, one with the potato and the other with the egg, and the cup of tea in front of Mary.
“what do you see?”
She said, “Potato, Egg and a cup of tea!”
“No, touch it and reply me again.” said the father.
Mary couldn’t find the correct answer.
Her father said, “The potato was so hard before boiled, but now they turned soft and smooth. Also, the egg was too delicate but after boiling it become too hard. Sip the tea, it is delicious!
Mary asked, “What does it mean, father? I don’t understand!”
“Each object responded differently to water. That is how you have to be. Each object was put under the same kind of circumstance, faced similar adversity, but reacted differently. The potato became weaker. The egg became harder and the tea leaves are unique. It changed the water itself, giving it unique flavor!it gave something new.”
Mary understood that we could create something new and unique even when we experienced adversity.

Winter is often a time when we switch our activities indoors and wait for spring. We miss out on the fresh air, beautiful scenery and healthy exercise that outdoor activities in Saskatchewan offer. If you are not the skiing or snowmobiling type, ice fishing is a great way to spend part of your winter indoors.
Murry Koob, a biologist with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, notes that there are over 50,000 fish-bearing waters in this province. “We have a lot of opportunities for ice fishing here, especially when most lakes are covered with ice for almost half of the year.”
It is estimated that one third of those who fish during the summer also fish in the winter. Koob says that a minimum amount of equipment is required for ice fishing.” In reality, all you need is something to cut a hole in the ice and a line with a hook on it. Warm clothes are obviously needed, too.”
Ice fishing can start as soon as the ice is thick enough to support a person walking on it: about 10cm thick. When it reaches 30cm, it will support a truck. Koob warns that ice thickness can vary greatly, so it should be tested as you cross it.
He suggests that anyone fishing on the ice carry emergency equipment, such as a throw rope, in case you break through the ice. “you should always fish with a companion and let people know where you will be fishing.
Carrying a cellphone with you is also a good idea. As noted, the equipment for ice fishing an be simple and inexpensive----or it can be costly. “I’ve seen people fishing with a home-made chisel (凿子) and a spool of line. But you can also spend hundreds of dollars or more on underwater cameras and portable tent-like shelters or a wooden shack. It all depends on how much you want to spend,” said Koob.
Often, the hardest part about ice fishing is getting out on the lake and cutting
a hole through the ice.
25. The underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to ____________.

A. more fish can be taken home with it
B. it can meet the need of emergency
C. a hole in the ice can be broken easily
D. It can be used to break through the ice.
28. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Go fishing with a companion is necessary.
B. An underwater camera is also a good idea.
C. The ice reaching 30cm thick is the bottom line to fish.
D. You can take a tent-like shelter with you.

Teen star Xu Shilin made Chinese sports history on Tuesday when she officially moved on the top of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) world junior rankings for girls' aged 18-and-under at last week's Osaka Mayor's Cup in Japan.
"I am very proud to become the first Chinese player to earn the number one world junior ranking," said Xu, who has been Asia's top-ranked junior player during the past two years. "The 2014 season is not over yet, so I need to stay focused and continue to play like I did in Japan. Osaka was a really incredible week as I played my style of tennis, keeping the points short and always being aggressive."
Xu lives and trains in Shenzhen with her father and coach Xu Yang. Xu has three more tournaments (比赛) to finish the 2014 tennis season. Xu will attempt to defend her Asian titles in singles and doubles in Korea during November 10-16, and then finish the season during the first two weeks of December playing two world-class events – Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl -- in Florida, USA.
As a junior player, Xu was limited to playing 12 professional tournaments in 2014 but has still managed to climb to number 414 in the latest WTA world rankings, one of the highest rankings for a junior player.
Returning to Florida will be familiar playing conditions for Xu, who lived in the US state with her family while training full-time at various tennis academies during ages 8 to 13, before returning to China in 2012. Remaining outside of the state-supported sports training system, Xu's father Xu Yang has been her full-time coach since putting a racquet (球拍) in her hand at age three.

How do humans learn? They go to school, of course! School is for more than learning ABCs and 123s. Kids have been going to school for thousands of years, but what they learned depended on when and where they lived.
Sparta, Greece, 320BC
Sparta has only one kind of school, the Agoge. Sparta boys started school at about age seven. They learned many things: reading, writing, arithmetic, poetry, dance, music, and public speaking. They also got some tough training designed to make them strong, disciplined soldiers.
Florence, Italy, 1450AD
Florentines realized that if they taught good math skills to kids, the kids would grow up to be better at their jobs. In the 1400s, Florence had schools called Abbaco School, where boys learned finger reckoning, a kind of math sign language. They studied multiplication, money, weights and measures. After finishing Abbaco School at 12 or 13 years old, many students started working at banks or as merchants right away.
Paris, France, 1600AD
For many centuries, teenagers have been workers in training. This meant a young boy must go to live with a master who was very skilled at a certain job. The parents paid the master, and the student ate, slept, and worked at the master’s workshop. Most teenagers started at about 11 or 12 years of age. How long they lived and worked
with a master depended on the trade they were learning, most of which lasted seven to eight years.
England, 1850AD
In 19th-century England, parents who could afford it sent their sons to private boarding schools. Boarding school students learned little that would help them at work. Instead they learned Latin, Greek, ancient history, and geography. Parents believed that these studies would make their sons better people. Boys might study French, fencing, music, or dance, but no math and science. Students interested in them should pay extra for a lecturer who visited the school once every year or two.
33. Which school offered students the military training?
A. The Agoge.
B. Abbaco Schools.
C. Master’s workshop.
D. Private boarding schools.
34. Which of the following statements is wrong?
A. All of the four kinds of education system were open only to boys.
B. Many Florence kids began to work at banks at 12 or 13 years old.
C. Teenagers in Paris must work for the master to pay for their fees.
D. What kids learning in private boarding schools was useless for work.
35. Maths is paid special attention in __________.
A. Sparta, Greece, 320BC
B. Florence, Italy, 1450AD
C. Paris, France, 1600AD
D. England, 1850AD

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.”36 I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary.37 However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
38 Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using them to get your message across. But to talk to someone in English, as quickly and well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn’t matter. 39
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All the hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive(主动的) language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. 40
A. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.
B. They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.
C. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.
D. However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”!
E. The second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned.
F. The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.
G. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

Dear Editor,
I’m now studying in a very good school in a city. When I left my old school in the country, I was very happy to come here, but now I don’t think my choice was right.
I do my best to study hard. I listen attentively in class, speak out my opinions and ask my teachers whenever I have questions. I don’t care about food and clothes.
I try to be friendly to my fellow students and I don’t believe I’ve done anything to hurt them. But one of my friends has told me that some of my classmates hate me and others don’t like me. Hearing that, I was sad and couldn’t concentrate on my studies any more.
What should I do? I’m looking forward to your advice.
