第一节:(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30)阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。
The campaign is over. The celebrations have ended. And the work for US president-elect Barack Obama has begun.
The 47-year-old politician rose to the highest post because of his stand against the war in Iraq and his plans to fix a weak economy. But what will the first 47-year-old African-American president do for race relations?
Obama’s victory appears to have given blacks and other minorities a tru e national role model. For years, many looked to athletes and musicians for inspiration. As Darius Turner, an African-American high school student in Los Angeles, told the Los Angeles Times, “Kobe doesn’t have to be everybody’s role model anymore.”
Recent polls(民意测验)also suggest that Obama’s victory has given Americans new optimism about race relations. For example, a USA Today poll found that two-thirds of Americans believe relations between blacks and whites “will finally be worked out”. This is the most hopeful response since the question was first asked during the civil rights
revolution in 1963.
However, it’s still too early to tell whether Obama’s presidency will begin to solve many of the social problems facing low-ine black munities.
Although blacks make up only 13 percent of the US population, 55 percent of all prisoners are African-American. Such numbers can be blamed on any number of factors on America’s racist past, a failure of government policy and the collapse(瓦解)of the family unit in black munities.
It is unlikely that Obama will be able to reverse (扭转) such trends overnight. However, Bill Bank, an expert of African-American Studies, says that eventually young blacks need to find role models in their own munities. “That’s not Martin Luther King, and not Barack Obama,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s actually the people closest to them. Barack only has so much influence.”
In the opinion of black British politician Trevor Phillips, Obama’s rise will contribute more to multiculturalism(多民族主义) than to race relations in the US.
“When the G8 meets, the four most important people in the room will be the president of China, the prime minister of India, the prime minister of Japan and Barak Obama,” he told London’s The Times newspaper. “It will be the first time we’ve seen that on our television screens. That will be a huge psychological shift (心理转变) for both the white people and the colored ones in the world.”
21. For years, before Obama was elected president of the US, __________.
A. Kobe was the only role model for all the blacks
B. American blacks had no role model who was successful in political area
C. minorities in America couldn’t find role models in their real life
D. blacks could only find role models on the basketball court
22. According to Bill Bank, ____________.
A. Obama is not the proper role model for African-Americans
B. young blacks should not be so much influenced by Obama
C. blacks should find other role models because Obama is far from their reality
D. it’s better for young blacks to find role models in those who are close to them
23. What will be the huge psychological shift Trevor mentioned at the end of the passage?
A. The other three leaders all support Obama.
B. Obama is an African-American president.
C. None of the four leaders is white.
D. The other three leaders except Obama are from Asian countries.
24. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. The First African-American President
B. America’s New Role Model
C. Obama-- A Successful Black.
D. Choosing a Right Role Model

Ok, I admit it: Emoticons(表情符号) are popular. Some people even think they are fun. Many seem unable to get through an e-mail or Instant Message chat sentence without using one. Some feel that they add feeling and character to otherwise cold digital munications.
Some, however, such as editor and Hollywood scriptwriter John Blumenthal, blast the use of emotions as “ infantile(幼稚的) just like the people who use them”. He believes that words themselves should be e nough. “If you’re being funny, happy or sad, that should be apparent from the ment that goes before the emoticons,” he argues.
In the eyes of Blumenthal, the use of emoticons is a gender issue. “Men don’t use emoticons very much. Maybe not at all.” he said. “Teenage girls and women seem to use them a lot. Maybe there’s an emoticons gene.”
It’s an interesting opinion, but it is not shared by all.
In an interview with The New York Times, Dacher Keltner, professor of psychology at the University of California, said that emoticons are popular because our brains are programmed “to seek out representations of humanity”. He believes that they appeal not because they are shortcuts for the lazy, but because they tap into(输入)something beyond language. They reach to our need to be with and municate with people.
All of these arguments may be somehow valid(正确的). Each one of us will choose to municate in our own way. I do not have much time for emoticons. I tried to use one
once and felt like I was stealing into a primary school class that I had no place being in. I’d rather let my words do the talking.
Friends, however, send me messages and e-mails full of emoticons. I have no problem with this; I don’t regard any of my friends as lazy or immature. It’s just a question of individuality.
29. According to the article, emoticons are popular because_________.
A. they add feeling and character to a munication
B. they are easy for lazy people to use
C. most of them look funny
D. a reader cannot understand a message without them
30. Which of the following views would John Blumenthal agree with?
A. Instant Message chatters are childish.
B. It’s enough to use language in digital munication.
C. Men never use emoticons.
D. There is an emoticon gene in everybody.
31. What is the main point of the article?
A. Reasons for the popularity of emoticons.
B. The history of emoticons.
C. Arguments over the use of emoticons. D Advice on language used over the Internet.
32. From the text, we can conclude that the author________.
A. feels he has no difficulty using emoticons
B. encourage his friends to use emoticons
C. thinks emoticons don’t suit him
D. believes that emoticons are suitable for everyone
D
Even if you are naturally shy, these three tricks will help you to quickly build a new social circle in any new city.
1.Take pictures
One of the great things about taking pictures at an event or party is that it gives you an excuse to get in touch with a person.Everybody loves seeing pictures of themselves, and it’s very easy after taking a picture to say “If you’d like I can email it to you”.This can be the seed that leads to new connections. The next time you hear about a fun event email your new contacts to let them know about it.
2.Eat alone in public
You might feel self-conscious eating by yourself but it has an important benefit:you are much easier to approach when you are alone.People may be afraid of interrupting you or being rude if you are in a conversation with someone else.Bring a book or newspaper to read (this will make you feel less self-conscious).Plus,having an interesting book with you will give others an excuse to start a conversation if they’ve read it. 3.Join a class, sports team,or club

*Don’t let little things in life upset you or be a negative person.People don’t
want to be around someone like that!
