Quietly sitting there reading, I found myself suddenly listening to the train guard announcements. Train travelers will surely agree that when the guard makes an announcement, whether it’s the recorded message or the guar d’s message, few people listen to it, because it’s often quite dull or hard to understand. This one was different. I noticed that other passengers appeared to be listening, too. Not only that, everyone was smiling!
Why was so much attention being paid to this message? As best as I can recall, the guard said something along these lines,“ Good morning, ladies, gentlemen and children. It is 7:35 am and you’ll be pleased to know that we are right on time. And what a lovely morning it is in Sydney today. The sun is shining, birds are singing, and all’ s right with the world. I trust you have a great day wherever you’re going. Thanks for catchi ng my train this morning and I hope to see you again soon.”
Quite a few people (obviously previous strangers) started talking to one another about the guard’s excellent message and how good it had made everyone feel. I started thinking about this, and then I found
the young guard and said,“Were you the guard?” The guard seemed a bit stunned at first, replying, “Yes, yyyyes.” “Well,I really appreciate your announcement. Thank you for your extremely good message, which gave me and the other passengers such a good start to the day. Please keep doing it,” I said.
There are two messages for me in what happened that day. Firstly, when people are happy in their work, it shows in what they do and say. Secondly, the story attaches much importance to the benefits that we get from thanking people for something they’ve done, particularly when it’s not expected. Can you imagine the conversation that guard would have when he got home?
24. Why do few train travelers listen to the announcements?
A. The messages are unattractive.
B. The guard’s voice is not clear.
C. They usually feel sleepy.
D. They are lost in books.
25. What does the underlined word “stunned” in Para. 3 mean?
A.Patient .
B. Embarrassed.
C. Surprised.
D. Excited.
26. What might the guard talk about with his family when he got home?
A. The beautiful weather .
B. The recorded message.
C. The train from Penrith.
D. The unexpected appreciation.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. An Intelligent Guard
B. A Boring Train Story
C. A Lovely Morning in Sydney
D. A Different Train Annoncement

It probably won’t surprise you that teens are texting more than ever before. Experts show great concern for teen texting. Students might not learn correct grammar and spelling if they write a lot of text messages. Also all that texting takes away from hours that could be spent studying, exercising, pursuing hobbies, or talking with others face to face. Some kids even sleep with their phones beneath their pillows and wake up several times during the night to text.
Dr. Elizabeth Dowdell points out teens need to learn that they can---and should---turn off their phones sometimes. She and her team had two teenagers, Kenny and Franchesca, carry out an experiment. They should obey the rules: No phone for 48 hours. No computer or Internet either, unless it was for schoolwork. Would these two teenagers be able to do it?
“I think I’m going to feel really alone,” Kenny worried. Franchesca was nervous but brave. “I’m excited for the challenge,” she said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen.”They handed their phones to their
mothers for safekeeping. The challenge was on.
The team caught up with Kenny and Franchesca after 48 phone-free hours. “Wow, it was pure suffering,” Kenny joked. “T hough life with no phone was n’t easy,” he admitted, “it had benefits. I felt less stressed because I didn’t have to be involved.” Sure, Kenny missed his friends, and he was sad at times. But he also felt relief from the constant texting. Instead of texting, Kenny went to the gym and caught up on schoolwork. He said that the first night he slept for 10 hours. He also spent time sitting with his family and talking. “I felt closer to my parents,” said Kenny.
Franchesca had an even happier result when she put away her phone. “I loved it!” she said. “I was going to the gym and hanging out with friends and playing basketball. I had a wonderful experience.” She slept better too, and she decided to continue the experiment for a while. “I think I’l l be so much smarter and healthier,” she explained. “Everybody in the world should try it.”
Kenny doesn’t plan to give up his phone agai n. But he now knows that he can live without it. “It was a reality check,” said the teen.
28. Experts are concerned about teens’ texting because it ______.
A. leads to learning disabilities
B. takes up their learning time
C. develops the habit of staying up late
D. causes misunderstandings with each othe r
29. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Teens will live a healthier life without phones.
B. Expecting teens to live without phones is not realistic.
C. Experimenting with phone use is popular among teens.
D. Teens don’t realize how different their lives are without phones.
30. How were the two t eens’ reactions to the 48-hour challenge different?
A. Only Kenny participated in physical activities.
B. Only Kenny spent time talking with his parents.
C. Only Franchesca benefited from a really good sleep.
D. Only Franchesca appreciated the freedom of having no phone.
31. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Giving up Texting.
B. Rules for Using Phones.
C. Problems Caused by Texting.
D. Two Days with No Phone.
D
Dodder is an unusual and unwanted plant that attacks other plants. Except for its flowers, the plant looks like spaghetti, a kind of noodles in the shape of long thin pieces that look like strings when they are cooked. Its almost leafless, thread-like stems (茎) hang down on top of other plants that dodder needs to stay alive. Dodder does not produce its own food. Instead, it steals food from other plants. It feeds by drinking juices from the plant which is wrapped around, often making its host very weak or even killing it.
Dodder can find other plants by their smell. When a young dodder plant starts growing, it follows the smell of plants it prefers, like tomato plants, potato plants, or other farm crops. Unlike most plants that usually grow in the direction of light or warmth, a dodder plant will grow in the direction of, for example, tomato smell---if a tomato happens to be growing nearby.
However, a young dodder plant must find a host plant quickly. It no longer needs its root once it is attached to the host and wrapped around it. If it cannot catch a smell of a potential host within a few days, it will dry up and disappear---even if there is plenty of water around. Once it finds a host, the young dodder plant will attach itself to it and start growing faster. At that point the dodder plant will drop its root.
Dodder is thus a difficult weed to manage and a real headache for farmers. When it does get out of hand, dodder can greatly reduce a farmer’s harvest or even destroy crops completely. Before sowing their produce, especially farmers in warm parts of the world often check to make sure no unwanted dodder seeds have mixed with their crop seeds. This is a good way to stop dodder plants from making their way to a crop field secretly.
32.Why does the author mention spaghetti in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the taste of some food.
B. To describe the shape of dodder plants.
C. To explain where the dodder plants come from.
D. To argue that dodder plants can be used.
3 33. What will happen if a dodder plant starts growing where there are no other plants around?
A. It will die sooner or later.
B. It will grow deep roots.
C. It will attract other plants.
D. It will cover the entire area of soil.
3 34. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Dodder does not produce its own food.
B. Dodder can affect farmers’ income.
C. Dodder can only survive in the shade.
D. Dodder only grows in the warm areas.
3 35. What is the main topic of the passage?
A. A new variety of farm crops.
B. Plants that are harmful to humans.
C. The special abilities of a dangerous plant.
D. Recent improvements in farming methods.
