Ⅱ阅读理解
(2016·四川天全中学高二上学期期中)Bright red post boxes, the Queen and queuing —what do they all have in common? They are all important parts of British life.At least I thought so.
However, the ability to queue for long periods of time, once believed to be a traditional characteristic of the British,is no longer tolerated by people in the UK,according to a survey done by British bank Barclays.
Once upon a time, queuing was seen as normal.During World War Ⅱ,everyone had to queue up to receive their daily supply of foods. In fact,if you didn’t stand up and wait in line with all the others,it was seen as uncivilized (不文明的).Th e famous English doubledecker buses, with only one entrance, might also help explain why queuing was seen as part of British life.Almost always, there is a queue to get in.
But perhaps the British are tired of being pushed past by the Spanish, the Italian or the French as they queue up to get a table at a restaurant. The people of these other European countries have more than one entrance to their buses, which explains their more relaxed attitude to the queue.
Two minutes is now the longest time most British people are prepared to stand and wait. But could it be that the Internet, which allows us to carry out tasks quickly,is the main reason why British people are no longer prepared to queue?
“Used to buying without delay, customers are even giving up purchases rather
than wait their turn,〞says Stuart Neal of Barclaycard.“Shoppers are also less likely to queue for long if the item they are buying is of low value.〞Perhaps I will have to replace“queuing〞with“impatience〞in my list of things I relate to the British.

A.to tell us the influence of the Internet on the British ways of life

Ⅰ阅读理解
A
(2016·大连第二十中高二上学期期中)I was appreciating my family photos on my computer, admiring my two beautiful babies when I found a disturbing scene: my laptop was in almost all the pictures. There was my daughter, 8 months old, playing at my feet while I was typing on the couch. There was my son, with a big transformer, on my left arms.
I’d heard about the Internet addiction before, but I always thought it was something only limited to playing too much World of Warcraft (a computer game) day and night. Now, it seemed my Internethabit is slowly but surely crossing the line. Sometimes I find myself up at midnight, surfing the Web while my family are sleeping.
I read news, keep up with friends and write my blog... just for something to do.
It turns out that I’m not the only mama who is addicted to the computer. These moms are contribu ting to a growing global addiction. There’s a movement among psychiatrists (doctors who specialize in mental diseases) to recognize the Internet addiction as an official mental disorder. And a recent StanfordUniversity national survey found that 14 percent of Internet users find it hard to stay away from it for several days at a time; 9 percent try to hide their unnecessary Internet use from their loved ones; 8 percent admit they use the Web as a way to escape problems.
You’re likely not the kind of addict who doesn’t bathe and abuses drugs to help her stay up for more online time. You may have noticed, though, that going online has become a necessary part of your life, which, at least, means a box of clothes
go unwashed. It may also mean you’re missing much time with your baby—something you probably do care about.

In 1863, the great novelist Jules Verne wrote a novel called ParisintheTwentiethCentury. In the book he used the full power of his great ability to forecast the coming century. Unfortunately, the manuscript(手稿) was lost until his greatgrandson happened to discover it lying in a safe where it had been carefully locked away for almost 130 years. Realizing what a treasure he had found, he arranged to have it published(出版) in 1994, and it became a bestseller at once.
Back in 1863,kings still ruled the ancient world in Europe, with so many poor people performing backbreaking work in the fields. And steam power was just beginning to change the world. But Verne predicted that Paris in 1960 would have glass skyscrapers, air conditioning, TV, elevators, highspeed trains, gaspowered vehicles, and even something similar to the Internet. Verne described life in modern Paris almost without any mistakes.
Just two years later Verne made another amazing prediction. He wrote FromtheEarthtotheMoon, in which he predicted the details of the task that sent several astronauts(宇航员) to the moon more than 100 years later in 1969.He correctly
predicted the size of the space capsule, the number of astronauts who would carry out the task, the length of time the journey would take, the weightlessness that the astronauts would experience, and the final landing in the ocean.
How was Jules Verne able to predict 100 years into the future successfully? Although he was not a scientist himself, Verne often turned to scientists, asking them questions about their opinions of the future. He collected a vast amount of information about the great scientific discoveries of his time. Verne realized that science would make it possible for many amazing things to appear in the future. The secret of his successful prediction was his belief in the power of science to change society.
