Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing. By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic (逻辑) behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process(过程)of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power.”
Try this experiment. Explain how you’ll increase your brain power, even if you have no idea how right now. Just start with anything, and create an explanation. For example, start with “I’ll learn chess,” or “I’ll read an article on the mind every week.” Explain how that will help. You’ll be surprised how often this becomes a workable plan, and if you actually do th is, you’ll have a better understanding of your brain twenty minutes from now.
Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a diary of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’ll probably have more success.
Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem, why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there. Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.
54.According to the text, writing can help you a lot in the following ways EXCEPT ______.
A. the increase of your brain power
B. the ability to remember
C. the development of your interest in study
D. the better understanding of a topic.
55. The underlined sentence “you’re half-way there” in the fifth paragraph suggests that______.
A. you are already successful
B. you still need to work hard
C. writing can help you walk half way
D. writing is important to solve problems
56.What’s the main purpose of the writer writing the text?
A. To advise readers to start their writing.
B. To explain the importance of writing.
C. To persuade readers to become writers.
D. To increase readers’ brain power
C
One of the most striking findings of a recent questionnaire in the UK is that of the people interviewed, one in two believes that it is becoming more difficult to meet someone to start a family with.
Why are many people finding it increasingly difficult to start and keep close relationships? Does modern life
really make it harder to fall in love? Or are we making it harder for ourselves?
It is certainly the case today that nowadays couples benefit in different ways from relationships. Women no longer rely upon partners for economic security(安全性)or status. A man doesn’t expect his wife to be in sole(唯一的)charge of running his household and raising his children.
But perhaps the knowledge that we can live perfectly well without a partnership means that it takes much more to persuade people to give up their independence.
In theory, finding a partner should be much simpler these days. Only a few generations ago, your choice of soul mate was limited by geography, social customs and family tradition. Although it was never clear, many marriages were essentially arranged. Now those barriers have been broken down. You can approach a builder or a doctor in any bar in any city on any given evening. When the world is your oyster(牡蛎), you surely have a better chance of finding a pearl.
But it seems that the traditions have been replaced by an even tighter restriction: the limitation of choice. The expectations of partners are made greater to an unmanageable degree: good looks, impressive salary, kind to grandmother, and so on. There is no room for error in the first impression.
We think that a relationship can be perfect. If it isn’t, it is intended to be thrown away. We work to protect ourselves against future heartache and don’t put in the hard emotional labor needed to build a strong relationship. Twelve-hour work at the office makes relaxed after-hours dating(约会)difficult. The cost of housing and child-raising creates pressure to have a stable(稳定的)income and career before a life partnership.
57. Nowadays, in a family, _________.
A. men begin to depend on women
B. couples share the burdens
C. men are responsible for housework
D. couples can’t get along together
58. People don’t want to give up their independence because________.
A. they can’t bear arranged marriages
B. they want to have more choices
C. they don’t want to follow traditions
D. they think they can live happily alone
59. People are not eager to date because_______.
A. it requires luck to build a strong relationship
B. it takes them too much energy to work
C. it needs faith(信心)to have a life partnership
D. it causes mental problems to find a life partner
60. Which of the following can best describe the main idea of the passage?
A. The expectations of partners and financial (经济的)pressure may prevent a relationship.
B. People should spend more money on marriage today.
C. Independence is much more important than love.
D. Even a perfect marriage can be given up for the sake of independence.
D
I was raised on a farm in the Fraser Valley along with five sisters and one brother. When I was 15, I got addicted to drinking at weekends and then dropped out of school. By the time I was 17, I continued to drink heavily. I couldn't find a job to support myself. So, I had no other choice but to join the army. I retired and went back home three years later, still a heavy drinker. When I was 22, I met Sue whose father was also a heavy drinker, so my behavior didn't surprise her. We were soon married and later had two daughters.
I started my first business when I was in my mid-twenties. A few years later, I bought a large chicken farm. Even with this success, though, my drinking was always a problem. It affected my marriage and family so much that I knew I had to make up my mind to stop drinking. So I tried great efforts. But two years later, I began drinking again.
When I was in my mid-thirties, I sold both of my businesses, and bought the big house on the hill. I was not at all happy, although I had everything that was supposed to make me happy. I sold our big house on the hill and bought a large land, where I built a new house. Our marriage was in big trouble, and my finances would go down the drain. For the first time in many years, I had to go to work for someone as an employee. I took a job as a heavy equipment operator in a road building camp.
My marriage still came apart when I was 38, and my kids had to go through our divorce. I spent 6 months in giving up drinking on a school camp. Nearly a year later, I met my childhood neighbor girl, June. We were married not long afterwards. My kids learned to trust me and I have two stepchildren that also love me.
Happy life continued about ten years. Everything was going so well when I felt there was something wrong with my body. I went to see a doctor, and the medical examination came out that I had ALS(肌肉萎缩症). Record shows that people with ALS generally survive between two to five years after symptoms appear. I've probably had the symptoms for one-and-a-half years already, so I don't know how much time I have left.…God knows…
61. Which of the following is the right order for th e author’s experience?
a. He married June.
b. He married Sue.
c. He bought the big house on the hill.
d. He bought a large chicken farm.
e. He succeeded in giving up drinking.
f. He tried but failed to get rid of drinkin
g.
A. a, d, c, b, f, e
B. b, d, f, c, e, a
C. b, c, d, a, f, e
D. f, b, d, c, e , a
62. The underlined phrase “go down the drain”(in Paragraph 3) is closest in meaning to “__”.
A. be out of expectation
B. be totally successful
C. become worse and worse
D. be safe in one’s pocket
63. What can we know about the author?
A. He began drinking at the age of 17.
B. He ended his army life at the age of 19.
C. He was not happy, although he lived in the big house at the age of 35.
D. He bought the big house on the hill when he was 25.
64. What can we infer about the author’s marriage?
A. His two kids didn’t trust him before he remarried.
B. His finance was the first thing that led to the failure of his first marriage.
C. His first wife didn’t know about his drinking before marriage.
D. He gave birth to two children in his 40s.
65. What is true according to the last paragraph?
A. The author is hopeless because he will be dead in a few years because of ALS.
B. The author has hope because the doctor concluded that he had 2-5 years left.
C. The author is uncertain whether the symptoms of ALS have appeared or not.
D. The author will ask God whether the disease is curable or not.

..最恰当的单词。

We all need physical exercise. Exercise uses up food we eat and keeps the body energetic. It works your muscles and makes your heart work hard so as to send blood to your muscles. So, exercise makes your heart and muscles strong. Exercise also makes you feel refreshed. If you take regular exercises, you will stay happy and healthy.
Some Western countries, such as the United States, have problems with exercise. In the US, many people lack exercise because it is hard for them. People have to work from dawn till dusk, so they don't have time to take exercise. They work in office buildings sitting in chairs all day long in front of computers. They cannot get much exercise sitting at desk passively.
Some Westerners can get exercise walking from their homes to work. However, the majority of people cannot do this. It is too far from their homes to their offices. They have no choice but to drive to work. In fact, some have to drive one or two hours to their offices. This is unfavorable in two ways. First, these people don't have a chance to exercise because they are sitting in their cars for two to four hours each day. Second, driving is challenging especially in rush hours and calls for too much attention. It makes a person very tired. So, when these people arrive home at night, they don't have the desire to take exercise after work.
Today, many people in the West are overweight, which causes health problems for them. Doctors say exercise can help people both lose weight and improve their health. So many people are trying to get more exercise. But it takes time to change, and when people don't see a difference right away, they will be discouraged and stop
exercising.

M: You look rather pale. Are you feeling well?
W: Not very. ○13I was sick most of the night. I didn’t sleep very well.
M: What seems to be the matter? Is it the flu? W: No, I think it was something I ate. We ate at that new restaurant last night, ○15and I must have eaten something that didn’t agree with me.
M: Was it that new restaurant over on Fourth Street?
W: As a matter of fact, it was. Why do you ask? M: ○14Jerry ate there last week and had the same kind of problem. He was sick the next day, too. W: ○16Maybe the health authority should investigate the place. M: ○16That’s what I think. Two people having similar problems in such a short time can’t be a coincidence! Text10
M: Let’s welcome Profession Sincl air and invite her to give us her suggestions on weight loss strategies for overweight children.
W: Good afternoon. Childhood obesity (肥胖症) has been receiving increasing attention in recent years. It’s no big secret that children like sweets, snacks and fast food. ○17Fast food restaurants make fatty meals even more popular by including toys. However, there are healthy foods that children can enjoy just as much as other choices. ○18Apple sticks dipped in butter are a delicious choice for middy snacks. Following the suggestions in the food pyramid is an easy way to make sure that a child has all of the nutrition he or she needs. My second suggestion is exercise. Exercise may seem like a dull activity, but it really can be enjoyable. Going for a bike ride, taking a walk around the neighborhood or running around the playground are all fun ways for children to get out and get moving. Fitness for kids is very different to fitness for adults. While adults often have a strong will to force themselves to exercise, kids usually would much rather sit in front of the television and watch their favorite cartoons. ○19It’s important to make things fun to get a child’s attention and peak his or her interest. Finally, it is extremely important for overweight children to stick to a healthy lifestyle. The lifestyles of overweight children can prevent them from improving their health. Eating healthy foods and making fitness for kids a fun experience can help get children on the right track to a healthier lifestyle.。
