(l)The number of candles is the person? s age.蜡烛的数目是这个人的年龄。

the number of表示的数目”，作主语时，谓语动词要用单数。

例如：The number of the students in our class is 50.我们班学生的数量是50 人。

The number of the pages in this book is 60・这本书有60 页。

但是a number of表示“许多”，相当于many,修饰可数名词复数。

作主语时，谓语动词用复数。

number前可用large, small等修饰，以表示程度。
