第1题.
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My name is Chelsea Chowderhead. A chowder is a thick soup. My father says that our early ancestors(祖先)may have invented chowder. For me, the last name teasing(戏弄)began as soon as I started school. So when my family moved to South Carolina, I decided that it was my chance for a fresh start. I asked my dad if I could change my name.
"But the Chowderhead name has a long and rich history—," Dad started.
"I know, I know."
"Why do you want to change it?" he asked.
I didn't want to hurt his feelings, but I didn't want to go through another school year as a Chowderhead, either. "I get teased all the time."
"I know it's not always easy being a chowderhead(傻瓜)," Dad said. "But you shouldn't change who you are. Let people get to know you first and your name later."
"How can people get to know me before they know my name?" I asked.
He said, "Ask good questions."
I looked at him blankly(茫然地). He went on, "When you meet someone new, ask them a good question. Once people start talking about themselves they don't judge you. They're just happy that someone is interested in what they have to say."
Two days later I headed to my new school for the first day of class. As soon as I got to my classroom, a girl named Claire introduced herself. She was very nice and we soon became friends.
By lunch, I'd talked to lots of people and was getting the hang(窍门)of finding the right question. But there were two kids, twin brothers, who didn't seem to talk to anyone but each other. When they looked at me, I felt as if they already knew that I was a Chowderhead. Still, my dad's advice had worked out well, so I decided to give it one more try.

Paragraph 2:
I took a deep breath, and said, "I'm Chelsea Chowderhead." ________
【答案】
Paragraph 1:
I asked Claire if we should sit with the twins. She looked a little surprised, but agreed and followed me. "Do you mind if we sit with you?" I asked. The twins looked at us. I sat down. "What's it like being a twin?" I asked. The twins looked surprised. Then they both started talking at the same time. "No one has ever asked us that!" one said. "Most of the time it's good," the other said. In no time at all we were laughing and talking. Then one of the brothers said, "I'm Nicholas, and this is my brother Nathaniel. What's your name?"
Paragraph 2:
I took a deep breath, and said, "I'm Chelsea Chowderhead." "Chowder? Like the soup?" Nathaniel asked. "Yes," I replied, looking down. "Like a thick soup." "Hey, cool. Do you and Claire want to come over after school and play basketball with us?" Nathaniel asked. "I'd love to," I said. "Me too!" Claire agreed. And that is how I learned to ask good questions and became friends with Nicholas and Nathaniel.

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In Emily White's hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium(大礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town's people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens - her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Mrs. Owens took a look at Amy's body and said, "Child, you just don't fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too."
Without singing a single note(音符), Emily was sent back through the door of the choral(合唱的)room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Buttler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn't want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Buttler called, "Emily, you're next." Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr. Buttler told her to do. Mr. Buttler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Buttler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn't sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn't fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.

Paragraph 1:
The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room. ________
Paragraph 2:
Finally, the day of performance came. ________
【答案】
The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room. She was not rejected this time. Her name was posted at the top of the list. She, Emily White, was chosen to be the leading singer! She would sing alone in the performance. Emily couldn't believe her eyes. There must be some mistake. But Mr. Buttler said to her with determined eyes, "Emily, I choose you because you should perform the part—your voice is unusual. Believe in yourself." Greatly encouraged, Emily practiced really hard.
Finally, the day of performance came. Standing in front of the line, Emily felt her throat tight and her palms sweating. When the curtain opened up, the eyes of the whole audience fell upon Emily. "Emily White!" Someone whispered. Then, along with the first note of music, Emily began to sing her heart out. Her voice was like a nightingale ringing in the auditorium.
Applause! Emily felt so happy and comfortable. She was shining on the stage. Emily White, with so many birth problems in her body, was an angel!

There Are No Vans
To me, what Thanksgiving really means is giving good thanks, not eating turkey. By the time I was 18 I had created my Thanksgiving ritual(惯例). I would go out shopping and buy enough food for one or two families. Then I would dress like a delivery boy, go to the poorest neighborhood and just knock on a door, and would always include a note saying "All that I ask in return is that you take good enough care of yourself so that someday you can
do the same thing for someone else." I have received more from this annual ritual than I have from any amount of money I've ever earned, especially one such experience in New York City.
Several years ago I was in New York City with my newly married wife during Thanksgiving. She was sad because we were not with our family. Normally she would be home decorating the house for Christmas, but we were stuck here in a hotel room. I said, "Honey, look, why don't we decorate some lives today instead of some trees?" When I told her what I always do on Thanksgiving, she got excited. I said, "Let's go someplace where we can really appreciate who we are, what we are able to do and what we can really give. Let's go to the poor neighborhood Harlem and feed some people there in need. We'll go buy enough food for six or seven families for 30 days. We've got enough. Let's go do it!"
We started by getting a van(货车), but there seemed no vans in all of New York City. The rent-a-car places were all out of vans. My wife was disappointed, and I said, "Look, the bottom line is that if we want something, we can make it happen! All we have to do is take action. There are plenty of vans here in New York City. Look down at the street. Do you see all those vans? Let's go get one!" My wife agreed and we took action.

Paragraph 1:
We tried stopping vans as they were driving down the street.________
Paragraph 2:
Eventually a van drove up and the driver said yes. ________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
We tried stopping vans as they were driving down the street. I learned something about New York drivers that day: They don't stop; they speed up. Then we tried waiting by the light. We'd go over, knock on the window and the driver would roll it down, looking at us in alarm, and I'd ask if he would drive us to Harlem so we could help some people. Every time the driver would look away quickly, furiously roll up the window and pull away without saying anything. My wife was ready to give up, but I said, "It's the law of averages; somebody is going to say yes."
Paragraph 2:
Eventually a van drove up and the driver said yes. We were wild with joy and climbed onto the van. Upon arrival, he led us to a store where we bought lots of food and some baskets. Together we packed them up, carried them onto the van and went to buildings where there were even people living without electricity. It was a truly fulfilling experience to make even a small difference. You see, you can make anything happen if you commit to it and take action. Miracles like this happen every day—even in a city where "there are no vans."

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn't get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and asked, "It looks like
you've got a problem," Arthur said.
"I'm afraid so. I'm in a big hurry and I can't start my car."
"Is there something I can do to help?" Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, "Thanks. If you're sure it wouldn't be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi."
"No trouble at all. I'd be glad to help."
The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.
It was from the bank. There had been a robbery(抢劫)!
Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, "What happened?" But everyone had a different answer.
Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. "Why is she looking at me like that?" He thought. "The suitcase! She thinks I'm the bank thief!"
Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Sam loved soccer. Ever since he could remember, his family spent Saturday mornings at the town soccer fields watching his big brother and sister play. It always looked like great fun, with kids running up and down over the grass, chasing the black and white ball as fast as they could.
Now that Sam was finally old enough to join the beginner team, he was feeling pretty nervous. Sure, he had watched a lot of soccer games, but that didn't mean he was good at kicking the ball.
Now the morning of Sam's first game was finally here. Under the warm sunshine, he stood nervously on the field, kind of stiff and there was another player, Briana, standing in front of him in his team on the field. She was very tall, with long, blond braids. In blue jersey(运动衫), she looked more charming. The whistle(口哨)blew, and she ran past Sam toward the ball. Sam blinked, his mouth wide open. He had let her get past him! Sam tried to
run after her, but it was hard to keep up. The ball kept whizzing by(呼啸而过), back and forth. Sam was worn out, sweat coating his forehead. A real game felt so much longer than practice.
Sam was about to stop running and take a short rest. Suddenly, the ball rolled to a stop right in front of him. He was wide open! Sam knew what he had to do. He gave the ball short kicks all the way down the field like the wind. He set up just in front of the net and gave one last, hard kick. The ball sailed into the net for a goal.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Sam scored his first point in life! Sam jumped up and down in excitement, broad smile spreading across his face. What an amazing feeling! However, when he turned around to celebrate with his teammates, he found the kids wearing red coats, not blue ones like Sam's. Confused at first, he suddenly realized that he had kicked the ball into the wrong net! All of a sudden, his excitement gave way to extreme embarrassment.
Paragraph 2:
Sam felt his face turned hot and red. Self-condemned and ashamed, Sam realized because of his fault, the other team was winning the game. Just at the moment, Briana threw the ball out onto the field and the players all ran after it. But Sam didn't move. Close to tears, he wanted to quit soccer. Surprisingly,
Briana ran over and put her arm around him. "Great kick! Kick another one just like it so we can tie!" Sensing her sincere praise, Sam felt better, running toward the ball.

Ten minutes to go and I could lock the shop's door behind me. There were still a few customers who couldn't decide what to buy. One lady tested all the lipsticks on the shelf. Her friend was busy with the sunglasses. They must be tourists with lots of time on their hands. I had a fake smile glued on my face as I waited behind the counter for them to make up their minds. They walked out without buying anything. Then it was ten minutes past 5:00. They wasted my time.
Sometimes I wondered if this was really what life was about. Working from 8:00am to 5:00pm, I caught just a glimpse of the sunrise on my way to work every morning. I wished I could stand on that hill and wait for the sun to rise. It felt like life was slipping through my fingers and that I never enjoyed the little things in life that would make me happy.
Going home after a day's work wasn't much relief. At home, a family was waiting for my attention. While preparing dinner, I put the laundry in the washing machine and took care of the pets. After dinner, it was time to wash the dishes while the rest of the family relaxed with their own activities. I wished I could do that, too.
My body was tired. My soul was tired. I couldn't go on like this. It was my own fault that I didn't make time for myself. I had spoiled my family over the years by doing everything by myself. No time for a walk with the dog, no time to just sit on my own and stare at nothing. Why should I be like this? I needed serious time for myself, time to recharge my batteries and do things that would make me a better person.
A family meeting was the first step. During the meeting, I explained why I was bad-tempered and asked them what they thought would solve the problem. Everyone got a turn to come up with ideas for how they could help me achieve my goal to have at least one hour per day to do what I liked.。
