As is known to all, colors appear in every language to express people’s feelings and thoughts. Then, what is the situation in American English?
Red is a hot color. Americans may say they are red hot about something unfair. They are red hot when they are very angry about something. The small hot-tasting peppers(辣椒) found in many Mexican foods are called red hot for their color and their fiery(火红的) taste. Fast loud music is popular with many people. They may say the music is red hot, especially the kind called Dixieland Jazz.
Pink is a lighter kind of red. People sometimes say they are in the pink when they are in good health. The expression was first used in America at the beginning of the twentieth century. It comes from the fact that many babies are born with nice pink skin that shows that they are in good health.
The color black is often used in expressions. People describe a day on which everything goes wrong as a black day. People or things on a blacklist are connected with things illegal(非法的) now. But at one time, some businesses refused to employ people who were on a blacklist for belonging to unpopular organizations.
The color green is natural for trees and grass. But it is an unnatural color for humans. A person who has a sick feeling in his stomach may say he feels a little green.
A passenger on a boat who is feeling very sick from high waves may look very green.
Sometimes a person may be upset because he does not have something as nice as
a friend has. That person may say he is green with envy. Some people are green with envy because a friend has more dollars or greenbacks. Dollars are called greenbacks because green is the color of the back side of the paper money.

To encourage all students to get education, even if their parents can’t afford it, a primary school in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh is asking parents to simply plant a tree instead of paying school fees. The project was set up by a group of local professionals and business owners in response to India’s rapidly rising education fees.
The parents have to take care of the tree and plant a new one if it dies—but compared to the cost o f traditional school fees, it’s a small price to pay. And it comes with the added bonus(额外的好处) of helping to improve local air quality.
The school is Shiksha Kuteer in the city of Ambikapur in the east of the country.
35 students between the ages of four and five are studying there. By offering an affordable way to get students into school, Shiksha Kuteer is encouraging education
for everyone.
So far, the school has received a positive response, and 700 trees have been planted across the village over the l ast year. “Shiksha Kuteer has opened in the village for students who have no money to pay school fees,” local villager, Sevak Das, said. “Students are being taught till a certain standard and their parents have been asked to plant trees instead of paying s chool fees.”
This is just one small school in a small village in India, but if the approach is efficacious, it could be something that other schools look into. And it can’t hurt, because every day, air pollution becomes a worsening problem in many parts of India. While a few trees aren’t going to solve that problem any time soon, making families plant and take care of a tree—and replace it if it dies—is a way to encourage positive air-purifying(净化空气) action, as well as helping to educate the next generation.

My family has always been a cat or a dog family, or both. We’ve got two dogs, Roxie and Cosita. My childhood memories are full of the cats we’ve loved. But since our last cat friend Sunny died too young, we’ve been cat-less. The sudden loss of Sunny was hard to move on from, especially for my mom.
This year, Mom finally thought she was ready for a new kitten. In the week before her birthday, something funny happened. She started to hear a kitten’ s meow(猫叫声) in the driveway every time she went in and out of the house, but she couldn’t find out where the soft cry came from. She asked my dad if he heard it too. He only shrugged(耸肩).
When Mom’s birthday arrived, she kept her fingers crossed, hoping for a kitten. Before we celebrated, Mom had a doctor’s appointment an hour away. Dad handed her the keys to his pickup truck(敞篷卡车). “The truck is better than your Mustang for long distances,”he said. All week Dad had been preventing her from driving her car. But Mom said she felt better driving her Mustang.
At last, my father had to confess. “About that meow you’ve been hearing…”he began. “Over the past week, I’d heard it too. One day I opened the hood(引擎罩) of your Mustang, and a little kitten stared back at me. I didn’t know how she got there, but I’d fed the kitten since then, waiting for the day I’d reveal(泄露) her to you.”The lovely little cat was the perfect gift for Mom, and Dad didn’t even need to leave the house to find her. We named her “Mustang Sally”. Sally is the first cat we’ve had in 7 ye ars and she’s fit right in with our dogs.

When it comes to dreams, many people tend to have big dreams in mind. What is a big dream? 36 Or, is a big dream something that provides only entertainment? Children dream big dreams, but there are three barriers(障碍) to realizing dreams. They often kill them before they ever have a chance to grow.
The Self
Immediately following the birth of a big dream, a negative self-talk takes over and gives all the reasons why it cannot happen. This inside voice is the ego(自我). It’s there for protecting and should be listened to. 37 Most people are influenced by the inside voice. That’s why only a handful of people make their dreams come true.
38
Family and friends are a lot like the ego. They want to protect those they love, so they will often list all the re asons why the big dreams won’t come true. Sometimes, family and friends destroy dreams of those they love most, out of their own fear of being left behind.
The World
If one gets past the first two barriers, one has to face the world. 39 In the past, big dreamers were locked up and sometimes even killed when they were shown to the world. Fortunately, in most of the world today, big dreamers just get laughed at.
The way to realize a big dream is with confidence and action. When children have confidence and then take action, they will be ready to accept any failure. The truth is that every great dreamer whose dreams have never seen the light of success knows failure well. 40
A. Sometimes it is right, but more often it is wrong.
B. Does a bi g dream show one’s future?
C. It is the last and the most terrible barrier.
D. How Big Dreams Die.
E. Family and Friends.
F. They simply fail until they succeed.
G. And their big dream is to be a rock star or a famous artist.

Dear Mike,
I’m glad to hear from you. You think cooperating is a waste of time, while I
have a different idea.
I used to have the same idea like you, but one thing changed my mind. They chemistry teacher asked us to do some researches and hand in the conclusion one day. It took me lots of time to do the research but I still couldn’t finish it. Thus I tried to cooperate with others. We shared our researches and then made the complete conclusion soon.
So I think cooperating with others not only saves our time, but also helps us to promote the communication with others. You can have a try.
Yours,
Li Hua。
