剑8 test 1 task 2
Children should be taught about how to be good members of the society, but who are responsible for this important task? Some people believe that parents should do this job, whereas others think that school is the right place.
For those who point to the parents, they indeed have valid reasons. Children spend a large amount of time with their parents, who are also the very first teacher to the children. Even from birth, children start to feel and learn how to be a member of a family, and the society is consisted of millions of families. After the child reaches school age, he or she spends every evening and weekend with their parents, and such valuable times are often spent reading or playing together.
The intimate two to one relationship between the child and the parents strongly affect the child’s character and his/her social belief. Being the child’s ever first teacher and friend, the parent should take up the responsibility because they enjoy the closest relationship with the child and their teaching is very likely to be effective.
On the other hand, some also believe that children should learn how to be good members of the society at school. This claim also appears reasonable. It is in the school where children learn how to interact with others and how to cope with emotions such as anger and sadness. Also, after they reach school age, students spend most of their time in the school. Teachers set models for their students and if school could instill good belief into the teaching process, children will surely learn the correct knowledge about how to be a member of the society.
In my opinion, both of the above factors are important for helping a child to build the correct concept. Parents and school should work together and communicate frequently in order to monitor a child’s mental growth. This is probably the most effective way to guide a child on the journey to become a good member of the society.
剑桥雅思8 test 2 task 2 technology changes the relationship between people
Technology has redefined various aspects of our lives including the manner in which people interact with each other. With the invention of mobile phones and the internet as well as social networking websites, communication as become so easy that some describe our world as being bombarded by information. These new inventions have undoubtedly benefited us in many respects, but at the same time some of their negative side effects can not be ignored.
On a personal basis, new technology not only helped us to connect with our loved ones more frequently and cheaply, it sometimes could be life-saving. Messages sent on tweeter could be viewed instantly by all your friends who may take immediate action to save your life. But on the other hand, there have also been complaints from parents who find a more distant and colder relationship with their children. Although young people may be spending more time at home nowadays, they simply sit in front of the computer screen whole day, apart from meal time. In fact this problem has also been noted by researchers, doctors and teachers, because more and more young people now lack the ability to interact properly with real people in the real world – in other words, people are now “isolated” by computers to some extent.
On a wider scale, the new styles of interaction between people have brought revolutionary changes to our society. For example, many universities now provide online courses, during which students could sit in their home watching a lecture that is held on the other side of the planet.
Multinational corporations are saving millions of pounds on travelling costs thanks to online video phone calls. But while we enjoy all these advantages, we are also suffering from a new life style that is manifested by high pressure and fast pace. Many companies now require their employees to be accessible 24-7; you can also find people in Beijing working at midnight because they have to interact with clients in New York. Some argue that this kind of busy life greatly increases world-wide productivity, but others believe it harms our health which could be extremely costly to the government.
To conclude, we must admit that technology has dramatically altered the way that we interact with other people. This alteration is like a two edged weapon –we must monitor it carefully to make sure that the negative effects don’t go beyond the bottom line.
剑8 test 3 task 2 –increase oil price
Some people assert that increasing the price of oil is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems. Undoubtedly it could be an effective method, but in my opinion it might be too arbitrary to claim that increasing price of oil is the best measure.
From a financial perspective, the quantity of a product purchased by consumers is decided by the price of that product and by the consumers’ demand for this product. Higher price tend to drive away some buyers in the short term, but if demand keeps shooting up as is the case with oil, then most probably traffic and pollution problems will remain unsolved or even become worse. Therefore, we need to address this issue from both sides: demand and price.
To suppress the demand for oil, scientists have already introduced some greener, cheaper substitutes such as solar energy and wind power. Although some technical breakthroughs are still needed to enable us to use these substitutes on a wider, more stable basis, this field of study is very promising and represents the future, because our planet’s petrol storage is not unlimited, neither is it renewable. Governments should invest more in the development of such clean energy, building more wind farms, promoting the installation of solar panels at home, or even give tax incentives for purchasing hybrid cars.
Another way to decrease oil usage and thereby alleviate traffic jams is to provide better public transportation system. This, again, relies to a great extent on the government, who must realize that the money spent on the construction of trams and underground tubes will be revamped in the long run.
To conclude, tackling the problem of traffic and pollution is not easy, but there are many effective options to choose from. It might be difficult to judge which one is the best, but I believe if we could combine those measures, we shall see better results.
剑桥雅思8 test 4 task 2 –weight increase and health decrease
In some countries the average weight of people is increasing but their level of health and fitness are decreasing. In this short passage we endeavor to provide some possible explanations to the phenomenon as well as some measures that could be taken to solve the issue.
We now live in a world that is quite different from the one in which our great grand parents lived.
For the past thousands of years, hunger was perhaps the primary problem that threatened human being. But the situation was alleviated a lot during the most recent 100 years - thanks to scientists and farmers who greatly increased the productivity of farm land. But while most people in the world now enjoy the over-abundance of food, they are also suffering from health problems that stemmed from excessive eating. Diabetes, for example, now ranks among the top causes of death. Too much intake of sugar, oily food and red meat is the main cause of this disease.
To address this world-wide health issue, we must also look at our modern life-style. In this digitized world, most people take a 9am to 5pm job, sitting in front of a computer monitor. Such mental work rarely involves any physical exercise but is often manifested by high pressure. What makes the situation worse is what we do after going back home: mentally tired, we fill our stomach with some fast food and then sit down again to watch TV the whole evening until mid-night. In short, we are eating more junk food but exercising less; we are making more money but we are also more depressed by fierce competition and less sleep.
How can we cope with this chaos? In my opinion, the government should take immediate actions to educate people, especially children, about healthy food and lifestyle. There must be stricter rules and guidelines to regulate the food industry, as well as how they advertise their products.
More sporting facilities should be provided to residents so that they can exercise on a regular basis. We could easily enumerate dozens of positive measures, but please bear in mind that it is more important to remind people about the seriousness of this issue because it is up to each individual to control his/her own diet and to start running.
9 test 1 Task 2
Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school.
Traditionally, children have begun studying foreign languages at secondary school, but introducing them earlier is recommended by some educationalists. This policy has been adopted by some educational authorities or individual schools, with both positive and negative outcomes.
The obvious argument in its favour is that young children pick up languages much more easily than teenagers. Their brains are still programmed to acquire their mother tongue, which facilitates learning another language, and unlike adolescents, they are not inhibited by self-consciousness.
The greater flexibility of the primary timetable allows for more frequent, shorter sessions and for a play-centre approach, thus maintaining learner’s enthusiasm and progress. Their command of the language in later life will benefit from this early exposure, while learning other languages subsequently will be easier for them.
They may also gain a better understanding of other cultures. There are, however, some disadvantages. Primary school teachers are generalists, and may not have the necessary languages skills themselves. If specialists have to be brought in to deliver these sessions, the flexibility referred to above is diminished. If primary language teaching is not standardized, secondary schools could be faced with a great variety of levels in different languages within their intake, resulting in a classroom experience which undoes the earlier gains. There is no advantage if enthusiastic primary pupils become demotivated as soon as they change school. However, these issues can be addressed strategically within the policy adopted.
Anything which encourages language learning benefits society culturally and economically and early exposure to language learning contributes to this. Young children’s innate abilities should be harnessed to make these benefits more achievable.
9 test 2 Task 2
Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children
It has been suggested that high school students should be involved in unpaid community services as a compulsory part of high school programmes. Most of the colleges are already providing opportunities to gain work experience, however these are not compulsory. In my opinion, sending students to work in community services is a good idea as it can provide them with many lots of valuable skills.
Life skills are very important and by doing voluntary work, students can learn how to communicate with others and work in a team but also manage their time and improve their organisational skills. Nowadays, unfortunately, teenagers do not have many after-school activities. After-school clubs are no longer that popular and students mostly go home and sit in front of the TV, browse internet or play video games.
By giving them compulsory work activities with charitable or community organisations, they will be encouraged to do something more creative. Skills gained through compulsory work will not only be an asset on their CV but also increase their employability. Students will also gain more respect towards work and money as they will realize that it is not that easy to earn them and hopefully will learn to spend them in a more practical way.
Healthy life balance and exercise are strongly promoted by the NHS, and therefore and kind of spare time charity work will prevent from sitting and doing nothing. It could also possibly reduce the crime level in the high school age group. If students have activities to do, they will not be bored and come up with silly ideas which can be dangerous for them or their surroundings.
In conclusion, I think this is a very good idea, and I hope this programme will be put into action for high schools/colleges shortly.
9 test3 Task 2
Some people say that the way to improve public health is by increasing the number of sports facilities. Other, however, say that this would have little effect on public health and that other measures are required.
A problem of modern societies is the declining level of health in the general population, with conflicting views on how to tackle this worrying trend. One possible solution is to provide more sports facilities to encourage a more active lifestyle.
Advocates of this believe that today’s sedentary lifestyle and s tressful working conditions mean that physical activity is no longer part of either our work or leisure time. If there were easy-to-reach local sports centres, we could be more likely to make exercise a regular part of our lives, rather than just collapsing in front of a screen every evening. The variety of sports that could be offered would cater for all ages, levels of fitness and interests: those with painful memories of PE at school might be happier in the swimming pool than on the football pitch.
However, there may be better ways to tackling this problem. Interest in sports is not universal, and additional facilities might simply attract the already fit, not those who must need them. Physical activity could be encouraged relatively cheaply, for example by installing exercise equipment in parks, as my local council has done.
This has the added benefit that parents and children often use them together just for fun, which develops a positive attitude to exercise at an early age.
As well as physical activity, high tax penalties could be imposed on high-fat food products, tobacco and alcohol, as excessive consumption of any of these contributes to poor health. Even improving public transport would help: it takes longer to walk to the bus stop than to the car.
In my opinion, focusing on sports facilities is too narrow an approach and would not have the desired result. People should be encouraged not only to be more physically active but also to adopt a healthier lifestyle in general.
9 test 4 Task 2
Every year several languages die out. Some people think that this is not important because life will be much easier if there are fewer languages in the world.
Overall, I disagree with this opinion that fewer languages will make life much easier for people. It is true that the extinction of some languages will save some people the trouble of learning new languages to break communication barriers, but we are also suffering from irreversible loss of cultural treasures.
Language is much more than a communication tool. A language represents a unique cultural identity and contains collective wisdom and consciousness. Many are proud of who they are because of the language they speak. French people, for example, are well-known to be very proud of their language. When the Germans occupied France during WWII and forced students to speak German in school, many French teachers and students refused to obey the order, insisting reading and writing in French. The famous novel The Last Lesson by Alphonse Daudet told such a story. From this story and its historical background, it’s not hard to see that the death of a language is sometimes as serious as the destruction of a unique cultural or national identity, which may wipe out a people’s collective memory, sense of honor and respect. Such cases are not uncommon in human history. While we feel indifferent towards the death of other languages, we may as well think about what would happen to ourselves if our own language is forgotten by the world.
In an increasingly globalized world, English has become so dominant in all areas that many local languages face the danger of dying out. In this way, one will not be able to decipher the precious documents preserved in these languages any more, a huge loss to our future generations. Eventually, we will regret sacrificing the cultural value contained in these languages for the convenience of communication.
In summary, we need to learn to preserve languages that are dying out and respect their unique cultural value. It’s shortsighted to sacrifice linguistic diversity and cultural identity just because we spend more time learning foreign tongues.。
