Digital technology-email and smart phones especially-have vastly improved workers’ ability to be productive outside of a traditional office. Even so, most white-collar work still happens in an office. One reason is that, according to findings of a new survey of office workers conducted by Wakefield Research for the IT company Citrix, most bosses arc doubtful about remote working. Half of the workers say their boss doesn’t accept it, and only 35 percent say it’s tolerated.
Skeptical bosses will likely have their doubts reinforced (加深) by the same survey, which shows that 43 percent of workers say they’ve watched TV or a movie while “working” remotely, while 35 percent have done housework, and 28 percent have cooked dinner.
It is true, however, that working at home makes people much more efficient (高效的), because it allows workers to take care of annoying housework while still getting their jobs done. It’s much faster, for example, to shop for groceries at a quarter to three than to stand in line during the after-work rush.
The fact th at such practices remain officially unaccepted reflects how far we haven’t come as a society from the days when we expected every full-time worker to be supported by a full-time homemaker.
More broadly the Wakefield survey suggests that employers may be missing a low-cost way to give workers something of value. Sixty-four percent of those survey participants who haven’t worked remotely would rather give up some bonus in order to get even one day a week working from home. Under such circumstances, smart firms need to find ways to let their employees have enough flexibility (灵活性) to manage their time efficiently.
21.Why do some employers hesitate to allow remote working?
A. They have little trust in modem technology.
B. They want to stick to their routine practice.
C. They fear losing control of their workers.
D. They are used to face-to-face communication.
22.What seems to be most workers’ attitude toward remote working?
A. Favorable.
B. Doubtful.
C. Reserved.
D. Disapproving.
23.What does the author suggest smart firms do?
A. Shorten their office hours.
B. Give employees a pay raise.
C. Reduce their staffs workload.
D. Adopt flexible work patterns.

Many Chinese people have awakened their interest in classical Chinese poetry recently t hanks to a popular TV show that aims to “appreciate classical Chinese poetry, explore cultural genes and enjoy the beauty of life” by combining traditional literary form with light-hearted TV quizzes.
The ten-episode “Chinese Poetry Competition”,since its broadcast ,has been praised for injecting vitality (活力) into TV programs with fantastic performances of contestants, impressive comments from judges as well as its innovative interactive mode. In the show, poems can be adapted into songs or depicted (描绘) through artistic pictures. Any contestant who can memorize the latest number of poems may not necessarily be the final winner, while fast reaction and usage of poems matter a lot more in the competition.
Wu Yishu, a 16-year-old student from the High School Attached to Fudan University in Shanghai, is the champion of this season. Her rich knowledge of classical poetry impressed everyone and she rose to become famous online. In an earlier episode, Wu wowed the audience when performing in a section. She amazingly recited lines from the Classic of Poetry(《诗经》),the earliest collection of poems in China. “Learning poems isn't about winning or losing. The power of poetry lies in shaping one’s view of life and developing one’s inner world.” said Li Bo, an expert guest at the Chinese Poetry Competition's second season.
When it comes to teaching people about poetry, Li Dingguang, the show’s academic advisor, suggested that teachers should explain more about the beauty of the poetry from both the aesthetic (审美的) and emotional sides, and guide students to lose themselves in the poems, rhythmic and rhyming (押韵的) lines.
“Although the proportion (比例) of ancient Chinese poems in the textbooks of primary and secondary schools has increased, many students still learn them for exam s.” Li Dingguang said, “Therefore, it’s important to help students truly appreciate the artistry and fun of poetry.”
24.The TV show has been produced to ______ .
A. appreciate classical Chinese poetry and cherish our traditional culture.
B. shape people's view of life and develop their inner world
C. help students learn poems for exams
D. explore cultural genes and enjoy classical Chinese poetry and life
25.What do we know about the TV show?
A. Only by memorizing as many poems as possible can a contestant win the quiz.
B. Poems can be adapted into any form of art in the show.
C. The TV show has aroused people's interest in classical Chinese poetry.
D. Fantastic performances of contestants matter most.
26. Which of the following may Li Dingguang agree with?
A. The beauty of the poetry should be explained more from the aesthetic and emotional sides.
B. Students should memorize the poems’ rhythmic and rhyming lines.
C. The main duty of teachers is to help students truly appreciate the artistry and fun of poetry.
D. There will be more and more ancient Chinese poems in the textbooks of primary and secondary schools.
27.The underlined word “wowed” in the third paragraph probably means ______ .
A. excited

Grandpa worked as a carpenter(木匠) in downtown Chicago. He loved life—especially when he could play a trick(玩笑) on somebody. At those times, his large body shook with laughter while he pretended(伪装) innocent surprise. But on a cold Saturday, Grandpa felt that God played a trick on him, and Grandpa wasn't laughing.
On this particular day, he was building some boxes for the clothes his church was sending to an orphanage (孤儿院) abroad. On his way home, he reached into his shirt pocket to find his glasses, but they were gone. He remembered putting them there that morning, so he drove back to the church. His search proved fruitless.
Suddenly, he realized what happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket unnoticed and fallen into one of the boxes, which he had nailed shut. His brand-new glasses were heading for India!
The Great Depression(经济萧条) was at its height, and Grandpa had six children. He had spent twenty dollars for those glasses that very morning.
“It's not fair,” he told God as he drove home in sadness. “I've been very faithful in giving my time and money to your work, but now thi s.”
Several months later, the director of the orphanage was on vacation in the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that supported him, so he came to speak on Sunday night at my grandfather's small church in Chicago. Grandpa and his family sat in their usual seats among the workers in the church.
“But most of all,” he said, “I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year.”
“Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses. Along with not being able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my coworkers and I were much in prayer about this. Then your boxes arrived. When my coworkers removed the covers, they found a pair of glasses lying on the top.” After a long pause, he continued, “Folks, when I tried o n the glasses, I was able to see things clearly again. It was as though the glasses had been custom-made just for me!
I want to thank you for being a part of that!”
The people working for the church listened, happy for the amazing glasses, but they thought the director surely must have confused(混淆) their church with another; they knew that there were no glasses on their list of items donated(捐赠) overseas.
But sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, an ordinary carpenter realized God had used him in an unusual way.
28.Which of the following is NOT true about Grandpa according to the passage?

B. He had a large family to support.

D. He believed in God.
29.The people in the church except Grandpa felt surprised at what the director said because ______.

C. the director could not get such glasses in their own country
D. the glasses were not included in the donation list
30.What does the underlined word “custom-made” mean mostly?
A. made specially
B. made by a church
C. made with the director’s agreement

A. Grandfather's Life

Actor Warwick Davis realized he was shorter than other people when he was eight years old. He suddenly noticed all his schoolmates were twice his size. It was then that the effect of having dwarfism hit him for the first time.
Now aged 48, Davi s says, “I have very fond memories of school but I realized I had to become a little bit louder and funnier so I wouldn’t get left out of conversations. I became quite the performer, so being short was my training in acting.”
It worked. Director George Lucas cast young Warwick as the Ewok Wicket in Return of the Jedi. The actor has gone on to star in many TV shows and films, including playing Professor Flitwick in the Harry Potter films.
Warwick’s dwarfism means he is 1.07 meters tall, while the average UK adult male height is 1.78 meters. Most types of dwarfism are caused by a genetic disorder that stops some of the body’s building blocks working properly.
Davis has a positive attitude to being “different”. He says, “If I had my life all over again, I would choose the same job and be the same height. I have enjoyed every minute. At school I played rugby and football and tried long jump and high jump.
I wasn’t very good at them but I always had a go. I defeated everyone at chin-ups (引体向上) because I had a low body weight combined with a strong upper body from climbing up to the top cupboards to reach the biscuit boxes at home.”
Warwick is supporting Jeans for Genes Day, a charity raising public concern for millions of children born with genetic disorders in the U.K. He says, “Even if you can only give a tiny amount of money, it will make such a difference to the children.”
32.Why did Warwick Davis decide to become a little bit louder and funnier?
A. It was his training in his acting.
B. He didn’t want to be igno red by his classmates.
C. The effect of having dwarfism influenced him strongly.
D. The genetic disorder prevented his body from working properly.
33.What can be inferred from paragraph 5?
A. Davis has a positive attitude to being “different”.
B. Davis turns his short body to his advantage at chin-ups.
C. Davis is not fond of rugby and football, long jump and high jump.
D. Davis doesn’t want to choose the same job if he can live his life again.
34.Warwick Davis can be best described as “___________”.
A. pleased
B. independent
C. sensitive
D. confident
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. My Strong Upper Body
B. Dwarfism Caused by Genetic Disorder
C. Height Is Not My Limitation
D. More Money, Bigger Difference

common part of adolescence—a time of life between child and adult. If it’s difficult to believe, you are not alone—every adult has gone through adolescent and your friends are going through it now with you.
