A Big Book Collection for a Good Cause
Hi everyone! My name is Emma and I'm a fifth grader at Oakdale Elementary School. I have some really exciting news to share with you all about a special event our school is doing. We're going to have a huge used book collection drive! I'm helping organize it along with some other students, our librarian Mrs. Johnston, and a few parent volunteers.
You might be wondering, what's so cool about collecting old books? Well, let me tell you! The books we gather up aren't going to just sit in a dusty storage room. We're going to donate them all to a wonderful organization called Book Treasures. Book Treasures takes books and gives them away for free to kids who don't have very many books at home. Isn't that awesome?
See, having lots of books at home is actually really important for kids like us. Studies show that kids who have more books in their house tend to do better in school. They get higher test scores in reading, math, you name it! Having books around helps improve our vocabulary, our comprehension skills, our imagination and creativity. Basically, it makes us smarter!
But the crazy thing is, there are so many kids out there who barely have any books at home. Maybe their families can't afford to buy lots of books. Or maybe their parents didn't grow up around books themselves, so they don't realize how important it is. Whatever the reason, those kids are at a huge disadvantage compared to kids like us who are lucky enough to have bookshelves overflowing with stories and books on every topic you can imagine.
That's where Book Treasures comes in. They take donated books and give them away for FREE to kids in need through things like book fairs at schools, book giveaways at community centers, donations to shelters, and more. They make sure those books get into the hands of kids who really need them and whose lives can be changed just by having more books around. Isn't that just the coolest idea ever?
Our book drive is going to run for two whole weeks starting next Monday. During that time, every student is encouraged to go through their bookshelves, closets, under their beds, and anywhere else books might be hiding to find gently used books they're willing to donate. We're taking all kinds of books - picture books, chapter books, nonfiction books, you name it! As long as
the books are in good condition with all their pages and covers intact, we'll take them.
Mrs. Johnston has even gotten some big cardboard boxesfor each classroom to collect the books in. The class that collects the most books is going to get a special pizza party! I don't know about you, but I'm definitely going to try my hardest to make sure my class wins that pizza. I LOVE pizza!
But even more important than the pizza, just think about how many books we could collect if every person at our school of 500 students donated even just 5 books each. That's 2,500 books right there! And those books could go on to be read and loved by so many kids who currently have hardly any books at all. We could make such a huge difference just by going through our overstuffed bookshelves and pulling out ones we're no longer using or have outgrown.
Of course, I'll be donating a big stack of books myself. There are so many that I've already read over and over, or that I've outgrown with my new advanced 5th grader reading level (just kidding, but I do feel like a super advanced reader now). From my old favorite Junie B. Jones books to the Boxcar Children novels to some of the easier Magic Tree House adventures, I've
got plenty of books that will be better off finding new homes with kids who need them more than me.
I really, really hope every single one of you will take part in this book drive. Just imagine how incredible it would be if we were able to shatter the school record and collect 3,000 or even 4,000 books! That could put hundreds or even thousands of brand new books into the hands of kids who don't currently have access to them. Getting free books from Book Treasures could help those kids catch up to the rest of us in terms of reading skills. It could inspire them and get them interested in new subjects they'd never encountered before. Who knows, it could maybe even set some of them off on a path to become lifelong bookworms like you and me!
Donating your old books is one of the easiest, simplest ways we can help make a difference for other kids in need. You're not even losing anything yourself since they're just books taking up space that you don't read anymore. But those books could absolutely change a life when passed on to a kid who desperately needs them.
So please, please pretty please with a cherry on top, go look through your shelves and any nook and cranny where you keep books and set aside some gently used ones to bring to school.
TheBook Treasures people are coming to pick up our whole collection as soon as the drive is over, so we need to make it as huge as possible! Let's show them how incredibly generous the students at Oakdale Elementary can be. Every single book counts!
Thanks so much for taking the time to read this. I'll be reminding everyone about the book drive again once it gets closer. But for now, start setting aside those old books! Let's make this book collection incredibly epic, Oakdale! Who's with me?!。
