13、“The hound(猎犬)!” cries Holmes. “Come, Watson! Come.”
We run quickly over the moor(荒野). We hear one last cry. A man is lying on the ground. As we approach(靠近) we see the dead body of Sir Henry Baskerville. He is wearing his brown suit.
“Oh, no!” says Holmes, “This man has a beard!”
Indeed Selden is dead instead of Sir Henry.
“So it is all clear to me. I remember that Sir Henry gave his old suit to Barrymore, and Barrymore probably gave it to Selden—his wife's brother.”
“Then Selden is dead because of this suit,” says Holmes.
“Think, Watson! Someone gives the hound some of Sir Henry's clothes—probably the boot from the hotel in London. The hound picks up Sir Henry's scent and runs after this poor man.”
Suddenly we see Stapleton walking towards us. He says, “There was a strange noise. I was worried about Sir Henry.
I wanted to check if he was all right.”
“Really?” asks Holmes.
Stapleton looks at Holmes. “Why, it is Mr Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective! Can yo u solve the mystery of the Hound of the Baskervilles?”
Holmes shrugs his shoulders,“We cannot solve every mystery. Anyway I will return to London tomorrow.”
“Oh, will you return to London tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
So Holmes and I walk off to Baskerville Hall and Stapleton walk to his home.
Holmes thinks Stapleton is dangerous. But we have no proof that Stapleton is the murderer.
“There are no marks on Sir Charles's body. We know that he died of fright, but we can't prove anything.”

We are surprised to see one portrait(画像) of a thin man is Sir Hugo, the first victim of the Hound of the Baskervilles. 14、Many young people want to become pop-stars. It is their great ambition(雄心)in life. They think pop-stars earn a lot of money, they lead interesting and exciting lives, thousands of fans love them, and they become famous!
Yes, but first they must become stars. Most performers star life with a group. This is the pattern nowadays. But there are many groups and competitions are hard. Groups appear and disappear almost overnight. Only a small number survive. Almost without exception they have to work very hard before they reach the top.
And very few reach the top and stay there. In England there are perhaps thirty or so groups at the top. Most of these do not earn so much money, perhaps 500 pounds each time they perform. Then there are their clothes, their instruments and their van. Sometimes they are still playing
for the last two items.
And don’t forget, they have to travel a great deal-sometimes 2,000 miles in one week. At times they even sleep in their van instead of a hotel, just to save money.

15、Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims (声称) as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Y our house is your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you
might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so, you have actually frightened the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting (筑巢) season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can
see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away. 1.Some scientists believe that most of t he time bird’s singing is actually _______.

3.Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?
A.Because they want to invite more friends.
B.Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.
C.Because they want to find outsiders around.
D.Because their singing helps get rid of their fears.
4.How does the writer explain birds’ singing?

18、Night Milk and Sleep
A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off — if it is milked from a cow at night.
Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help
people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.
The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.
Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.
While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.
Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.
Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night. 1.What does the phrase ‘nod off’ in the first paragraph mean?
A.Try to keep awake.
B.Try to sleep a longer time.
C.Change from being awake to a sleeping state.
D.Change from a sleeping state to being awake.
2.According to the text, the mice being fed with night time milk _________.
A.woke up later B.were more anxious
C.were less active D.could not sleep well
3.Why do lots of people think milk is excellent for helping sleep?
A.Because many people like drinking milk.
B.Because it’s been tested on mice ten times.
C.Because it can make people more energetic.
D.Because it contains calcium, which helps people to relax.
