The Story: In the Song Dynasty, there was a scholar named Chen Zao. He called himself 'Mr. Dragon Hill'. He was very hospitable and often gathered his friends to have parties at home and called some singing girls for fun. His wife Liu was very unhappy and jealous about this. When she heard the girls' songs, Liu would use sticks to hit the wall and shout in the next room, and all the guests had to leave then.
Chen Zao feared his wife very much, and everyone knew this. His good friend Su Dongpo one day joked with him and wrote a poem: "Mr. Dragon Hill is a pathetic man; chatting with friends until midnight; suddenly a lioness' roar comes from the east bank; he was perplexed and dropped his stick to the ground."
Later the line 'lioness roars from the east bank' was used to describe a bossy woman, especially a wife.
在宋代,有一位叫陈造一个学者。
他自称'龙山先生'。

Fu Bi, his assistant, said to him: "You can strike out their names with one stroke of pen, but don't you know that the whole family of the dismissed official will weep bitterly?" Fan Zhongyan answered quickly: "Let a whole family cry if they want to, so that the people of a whole prefecture will not cry." He thus dismissed all the incompetent supervisors.

The Story: At the time of the Warring States, a man named Ji Liang fell ill. His son saw his father's critical condition and sent for three doctors.
The first one, Dr. Jiao, after examining Ji Liang, said, "You've failed to deal with cold and heat properly. Your functional metabolism is in disorder and your functional power is weak. The cause of your sickness is over-hunger and over-eating and indulgence in carnal desires. It can be cured only slowly." After hearing of this, Ji Liang told his son: "He is only a mediocre doctor."
The second one, Dr. Yu, looked over Ji Liang and said, "Your illness did not come in a morning or evening. It's been there for a very long time. I'm afraid that I cannot do anything about it." Ji Liang then said to his son, "He is a good doctor."
The third one, Dr. Lu, also examined Ji Liang's condition. He said, "You're beyond the cure of medicine." Upon hearing his words, Ji Liang praised him and said, "You are really an excellent doctor!" He gave Dr. Lu many presents before sending him home.
Ji Liang was actually suffering from a nervous disorder. He soon recovered.

A Ruinous Defeat

The Story: At the end of the Qin Dynasty, the feudal princes in many places revolted against the tyrannical Qin court and the peasant leader Chen Sheng staged an uprising at the Great Marsh Township.
The magistrate of Pei County was greatly alarmed by the perilous political situation. At the suggestion of the county officials Xiao He and Cao Shen, the magistrate sent someone to fetch Liu Bang, who had been exiled. But when Liu Bang and his men were outside the city, the magistrate was afraid that once Liu Bang was in the city, he might remove the magistrate from his post.
The magistrate closed the city gates and planned to kill Xiao He and Cao Shen. Xiao and Cao managed to escape from the city and received Liu Bang's protection.
Liu Bang wrote a letter calling on the people to rise against the magistrates, tied the letter to an arrow and shot it into the city. The people in the city responded to the call with one heart -- they killed the magistrate and opened the gate to welcome Liu Bang into the city.
They all wanted him to be the magistrate, but Liu Bang refused, saying, "The whole country is now in a great turmoil. If you don't choose the right person to be the magistrate, maybe you have to suffer with your livers and brains scattered to the ground. I wish you could choose a more suitable person." After declining several more times though, Liu Bang eventually assumed the post of magistrate and became known respectfully as Lord Pei.

The Story: During the period of the Three Kingdoms, Cao Cao of the kingdom of Wei and Liu Bei of the kingdom of Shu fought with each other for the control of the city of Hanzhong.
Cao Cao sent his general Zhang He to stockpile a large quantity of grain and fodder at the foot of the North Mountain by the Hanshui River. The aged general Huang Zhong was dispatched by Liu Bei to seize and burn Cao Cao's grain and fodder. At the same time, Huang Zhong was encircled by Cao Cao' men and could not break the cordon. Zhao Yun came to his rescue and saved him.
Seeing that Zhao Yun was unrivaled in his courage, Cao Cao led a great army himself to reinforce his men. Zhao Yun had by then withdrawn to the town of Mianyang garrisoned by Liu Bei's general Zhang Yi. When Zhang Yi saw that Cao Cao's army was bearing down on them ferociously, he wanted to close the gates in order to defend the town. Zhao Yun would not hear of it. He had the city gates opened widely, furled the flags and stopped the drums.
The Cao's army thought this must be a ruse and started to pull back. Taking advantage of the situation, Zhao Yun thumped the drums and gave chase. The Cao's army was utterly defeated. The next day, when Liu Bei came to Zhao Yun's camp, he said with feeling:" Zilong(Zhao
Yun's familiar name), you are really full of courage!"

The Story: At the end of the Southern Dynasties, Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty, Yang Jian, on the northern side of the Yangtze River, launched a war to unify the whole country.
He wanted to destroy the state of Chen on the southern side but his army was stopped by the torrential river. He stood by the river and looked towards the south that was enveloped in mists for a little while and he said to his minister, Gao Ying: "The emperor of Chen has plunged the people of Chen into the depth of sufferings. As an official of the people, am I to be stopped by a narrow strip of water and not come to their rescue?" He ordered boats to be prepared and eventually subjugated the state of Chen, unifying the whole country under his leadership.
