Why should we read Chinese Classics(我们应该学国学)

Why should we read Chinese Classics(我们应该学国学)

Why should we read Chinese Classics?1. What are Chinese Classics?2. The importance of reading Chinese Classics3. Conclusion: Chinese must read Chinese ClassicsWhat are the classics? Classics refer to the extensively influential and authoritative works. No matter how long or how far it is, Classics always can cross the boundary of time or space and give you an extraordinary power. I believe that the East and the West respectively have their own classics. Chinese classics are Chinese nation's blood, and even are the foundation of Chinese culture during thousands of years. Chinese classics include four parts: Confucian classics, history, philosophy and literature, of which Confucian classics are the most important. Confucian classics are just The Thirteen Classics. Why should we read Chinese Classics? We want illustrate our reasons from the national, social, personal three aspects. Firstly, Reading Chinese Classics is the need of inheriting Chinese culture. President Xi Jinping ever said: "To reach the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is the greatest modern dream of Chinese nation." We think Chinese Dream not only includes economic, political dream, but also includes cultural dream. To reach our cultural dream, we must walk the road of China and read and research Chinese Classics. Secondly, Reading Chinese Classics is the need of purifying social atmosphere. Today, China has a lot of socialproblems, of which the most serious one is the moral landslide. Just as a saying goes, our pockets are rich but our heads are poor. Then Chinese Classics have many theories of ethics, such as benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, faith and so on. Mencius said: “Expend the respect of the aged in one’s family to that of other families; expend the love of the y oung ones in one’s family to that of other families.” Only to find a way of combining traditional classics with modern society, will our social atmosphere be cleaner. Finally, reading Chinese Classics is the need of improving our own qualities. Reading them can not only increase our knowledge but also enhance our moral cultivation. As Qian Muwei says, for a Chinese we must have a kind of tender feeling and respect for our culture. Learning Chinese culture is the responsibility of the Chinese people. At the same time, learning Chinese traditional culture can improve our temperament. As The Book of Changes says, strengthen self without stopping, and hold world with virtue. This is Chinese spirit and we should learn it by reading Chinese Classics. In a conclusion, Chinese culture is broad and profound, and has a lot of energy. Only reading Chinese Classics, can we understand and carry forward the Chinese culture. Only reading Chinese Classics, can we and our country have great progress.传承中华文化、净化社会风气、提高自身素养圣经:the Holy Bible。

Should we believe Traditional Chinese Medical

Should we believe Traditional Chinese Medical

Should we believe Traditional Chinese Medical(TCM)?There is no denying that TCM is absolutely an indispensable part of Chinese culture. It has been prevalent for thousands of years in Chinese history and contributed a lot to the Chinese’s life quality. When it comes to the topic that whether TCM is still believable now, opinions vary from person to person, which may mean a collision of tradition and modernity. Some people hold the opinion that TCM can help people a lot and it’s necessary to obey some rules of TCM to keep fit. On the flip side, many people, including most of the youngsters, prefer western medical system to TCM. From my perspective, I regard TCM as an important way to improve my life quality. My reasons are as follows: Firsty, the greatest strength of Western Medicine is in its trauma care and therapies of acute problems, while Chinese medicine excels in the areas of chronic problems and preventive medicine. So if I get a fever I may use western medicine, but during my daily life I will choose TCM to increase immunity. TCM has its own way to identify each person’s different body type and for each type they have different recommendations. Besides, comparing to western medicine, TCM’s medicine is more natural and have less side effects, because traditional medicines are mostly herbs or some parts of animals in the nature. Through years of experiments, the effect and the disadvantagesof these medicines are revealed. The majority of people who don’t believe TCM suspect the existence of TCM’s central concepts, that is Qi and Jingmai. Though they still can’t be detected by any scientific instruments, people can feel them and describe Qi as bio-electric energy in the West. Many Chinese cultural heritages can’t be proved exactly, but it can’t directly be the reason to deny those heritages. In conclusion, I agree that TCM is still of essence now.And if we can choose to use TCM or western medicine depending on different situations, we will benefit from both of them to keep healthy.。

舟楫英语课堂专八范文听读06专八题目:Should We Return to Complex Chinese Characters ?发邮件至aikouxinzi432@获mp3录音材料专八范文:As one famous professor stated,“One can only appreciate the beauty of ancient Chinese literature through the complex Chinese characters.” What the professor wants to convey is that complex Chinese characters are manifestation of traditional Chinese aesthetics. However, since the foundation of the PRC, China began to adopt simplified Chinese characters, so that illiteracy can be more easily eliminated.

Undoubtedly, the introduction of simplified Chinese characters contributes to China’s modernization. So when a member of the national committee of CPPCC proposed that we should return to Complex Chinese Characters, ongoing debates ensued with vehemence.Personally, it is impractical to return to Complex Chinese Characters, but individuals can voluntarily make efforts to know Complex Chinese Characters.无可否认,简体字的引进促进了中国的现代化建设。

Should We Use Traditional Chinese Characters 3

Should We Use Traditional Chinese Characters 3

Should We Use Traditional Chinese Characters or Simplified Characters? In today's hybrid world, Chinese simplified character is becoming more and more popular, while the traditional character is being phased out of existence in China. This phenomenon has caused people's discussion, which has been lasting for years. On the one hand, people who support to revive the traditional character think that it not only has a long history, but also helps to unite Chinese people. On the other hand, people who hold the view that we should continue using the simplified character believe that the simplified character are more efficient to use and can also preserve traditional culture. As far as I'm concerned, people should continue using the simplified character. To begin with, it is easier for people to learn simplified character. According to the survey, the number of the commonly used character in traditional character is about nine thousand but in simplified one is only about four thousand. From the survey we can know that people will learn only 3.5 thousand words if they choose to use simplified character and the strokes of it are much more simple than traditional character. So simplified character is easier for people to learn. Furthermore, simplified character help to improve the intelligibility of reading. An article written in traditional character will give people the impression of its intricacy and complexity. They will also find out that it has so many words that they feel difficult to read it, let alone understand its meaning. Otherwise than the article written in traditional character, the article written in simplified character makes people feel that it's brief and clear, which not only can attract readers to read it but also is easy-to-understand. Last but not least, simplified character enables people to aware of the value of Chinese traditional character. As we all know, traditional character was taken out some redundant words to transform into simplified character. Thus, people will discover the deeper meaning of words from traditional character when they learn the words in simplified character, which makes them have a better understanding of cultural inheritance and start to pay more attention to traditional character. In conclusion, although traditional character are important for preserving our traditional culture, the society still needs to keep using the simplified characters, for the reason that it has to adapt to the rapid development of the world. What's more, traditional character should be a precious Chinese culture heritage which can become a way to propagandize traditional culture instead of using it. Therefore simplified Chinese character is more suitable for living in this society.。

高三英语作文传统文化及翻译高三英语作文传统文化及翻译1It seems we are living in the conflict between modern and traditional cultures every day. Hearing the blaring of horns the moment you step out of your house, seeing the so called "pop" the moment you open your eyes, you cant help thinking, "Will the traditional culture be gradually lost?"Many people believe so. They may put right in front of you all the evidences they can dig out. They may argue that people are rushing to restaurants instead of cooking at home, listening to pop music but not traditional, wearing in a way people couldnt imagine ten years ago. Modern people like the air of freedom, not to be restrained by traditions. They offer this long list, only trying to confirm that this world is full of fashion, competition and temptation and the traditional culture is fading and will be lost at last.Though we are now living in a world in which undeclared aggression, war, hypocrisy, chicanery, anarchy are part of our daily life. Though this is a skeptical age, and our faith has weakened, ourconfidence in some aspects of the traditional culture should and would never be lost.Wouldnt you agree that our traditional culture is always credited with modesty, politeness and respectfulness, which have always been treasured for more than five thousand years?Even in this modern world, people still admire those with good manners, those who are polite to others or respectful to old people.Wouldnt you agree that our Chinese traditional music is beautiful and artistic and our Chinese tea culture is always an appealing treasure to people around the world? So there may just be some changes in our lifestyle or our attitudes towards life, but little change occurs to some fundamental aspects of our traditional culture that people still treasure in heart. The traditional culture will never be lost, I believe.似乎我们生活在每天现代和传统文化之间的冲突。

中国的传统文化应该被保留下来吗英语作文

中国的传统文化应该被保留下来吗英语作文

中国的传统文化应该被保留下来吗英语作文Should Traditional Chinese Culture Be Preserved?Hi everyone! My name is Li Ming and I'm a 5th grader at Sunshine Elementary School. Today I want to talk to you about traditional Chinese culture and why I think it's really important that we preserve it.First of all, what exactly is traditional Chinese culture? It refers to all the customs, beliefs, arts, and way of life that have been passed down in China for thousands of years. Things like Chinese calligraphy, painting, music, martial arts, medicine, philosophy, festivals and more.Traditional Chinese culture is super old - it has been around for over 5,000 years! Can you imagine that? It started developing way back during the Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties. Over all those years, so many amazing things were invented and created in China that had a big influence on the rest of the world too. Some of the most important Chinese inventions and discoveries include the compass, gunpowder, paper making, printing, the abacus for math, and the first books and written language. Wow, right? They were way ahead of their time backthen! Chinese people also made great advances in areas like agriculture, astronomy, ceramics, silk production, and more. But traditional Chinese culture isn't just about inventions and discoveries. It's also about values, philosophies, and ways of living that have been embraced for centuries. Confucianism teaches ideas like respect for elders, emphasis on education, and proper social relationships. Taoism promotes being in harmony with nature. Buddhism encourages compassion and finding inner peace. There are so many fascinating aspects of traditional Chinese arts and crafts too. Chinese calligraphy is considered the highest form of art - each stroke has meaning and calligraphers train for years to perfect their skills. Traditional Chinese painting uses special brushes and ink to capture the essence of landscapes, plants, animals and figures. Chinese music has beautiful ancient instruments like the guqin, erhu, and dizi flute.Speaking of arts, let's not forget about things like Peking Opera with its colorful costumes, acrobatics and singing. Or Chinese martial arts like kung fu that involve intricate moves and discipline. Or Chinese architectural marvels like the Forbidden City and temples with their pagodas, gardens and intricatedesigns. So much skill and artistry went into creating all these cultural traditions!Chinese cuisine is another highlight, with its varied regional styles and dishes prepared through ancient techniques. Who doesn't love dumplings, noodles, stir-fries and dim sum? Many familiar foods and recipes originated from traditional Chinese cooking methods. And then there are all the colorful traditional festivals in the Chinese calendar year! My favorite is Chinese New Year with its red decorations, firecrackers, dragon dances, family reunions, gift giving and special foods. Other fun festivals include the Lantern Festival, Qingming Festival to honor ancestors, Dragon Boat Festival with its delicious zongzi, and the Mid-Autumn Festival for moon gazing and mooncakes. Each one celebrates something unique and has its own customs.I could keep going on and on about traditional Chinese culture - there's just so much to talk about! Things like traditional medicine, proverbs and sayings, clothing like the qipao dress, games like Chinese chess...the list goes on and on.The main point is, traditional Chinese culture is an incredibly rich part of world heritage. It has had such a profound influence not just in China but around the globe over the past fewmillennia. So many aspects of this ancient civilization have made valuable contributions to humanity. That's why I strongly believe we need to make an effort to preserve and protect traditional Chinese culture. It's a precious treasure that should be celebrated, not forgotten or allowed to disappear over time. Too often these days we get wrapped up in modern technology, fast lifestyles and new trends. But our ancestors' amazing cultural legacy deserves to be carried on respectfully. How can we preserve this heritage? Well, by continuing to study, practice and participate in traditional customs, arts, festivals and ways of life. Families can pass them down from generation to generation. Schools can teach students about the history and significance behind traditions. Communities can hold events to share and experience different cultural elements. Authorities can also protect heritage sites, museums, archives and resources. If we let traditional Chinese culture fade away, that means losing a huge part of world culture and history. It would be such a shame not to appreciate and sustain the incredible achievements, wisdom, beauty and values created by ancientChinese civilizations. We owe it to our ancestors to safeguard their precious legacy!Traditional culture gives us a sense of identity, values to live by, and amazing arts, innovations and customs to be proud of. It connects us to our roots and where we came from as Chinese people. Protecting our heritage shows respect for our ancestors and all that they accomplished over thousands of years. So let's work together to promote, experience and revive interest in traditional Chinese culture however we can. The more we participate in upholding these traditions, the longer this precious heritage can be cherished for generations to come. I hope you'll join me in helping to preserve the vibrant and incredible cultural treasures of ancient China!。

珍视中国戏剧英语作文高考

珍视中国戏剧英语作文高考

As a high school student deeply immersed in the rich tapestry of Chinese culture, I have always been fascinated by the art of Chinese drama. It is an integral part of our heritage, reflecting the history, traditions, and values of our society. The stage is a canvas where stories are brought to life, and the actors are the painters who use their bodies, voices, and emotions to create a vivid picture of the narrative.Growing up, I was fortunate to have parents who appreciated the arts and often took me to watch performances of Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera, and other traditional Chinese dramas. These experiences were not just entertainment they were lessons in empathy, understanding, and appreciation for the depth of human emotion and the complexity of lifes situations. One of the most memorable experiences was attending a performance of The Peony Pavilion by Tang Xianzu, a classic Kunqu Opera. The story revolves around a young woman named Du Liniang who falls in love with a scholar in a dream and later dies of lovesickness. Her spirit then seeks out the scholar, Liu Mengmei, and they eventually reunite in the human world. The performance was mesmerizing, with the actors movements being graceful and their expressions full of emotion. The music, a harmonious blend of traditional Chinese instruments, added a layer of depth to the storytelling. What struck me most was the way the drama conveyed the universal theme of love transcending the boundaries of life and death. It was a poignant reminder that love is a powerful force that can defy the mostinsurmountable odds. This theme resonated with me deeply, as it highlighted the resilience of the human spirit and the lengths to which we are willing to go for the ones we love. Moreover, Chinese drama is not just about the stories being told it is also about the art of performance itself. The stylized movements, the elaborate costumes, and the intricate makeup are all part of the visual spectacle that draws audiences into the world of the play. The use of masks in some forms of Chinese drama, such as the Peking Opera, adds an additional layer of symbolism and meaning to the characters and their actions. In school, we often discuss the importance of preserving cultural heritage, and Chinese drama is a prime example of this. It is a living testament to the creativity and ingenuity of our ancestors, and it is our duty to ensure that it continues to thrive for future generations. By learning about and appreciating Chinese drama, we are not only honoring our past but also enriching our present and shaping our future. However, the preservation of Chinese drama is not without its challenges. With the rise of modern entertainment forms, there is a risk that traditional art forms may be overlooked or forgotten. This is why it is crucial for us, as young people, to take an active interest in these cultural treasures. We can do this by attending performances, learning about the history and techniques of Chinese drama, and even participating in workshops or classes to gain a deeper understanding of the art.In conclusion, Chinese drama is a treasure trove of stories, emotions, andcultural insights that offer a unique perspective on the human experience. It is a testament to the enduring power of art to move, inspire, and connect us. As a high school student, I am proud to be part of a generation that values and cherishes this rich cultural heritage. Let us continue to support and promote Chinese drama, ensuring that it remains a vibrant and integral part of our cultural landscape for many years to come.。

HowShouldWeReviveTraditionalChineseCulture-

HowShouldWeReviveTraditionalChineseCulture-

How Should We Revive Traditional ChineseCulture? There has been a growing interest during the past year in the popularity of traditional Chinese culture, both domestically and globally.Currently, over 40 Confucius Institutes have been set up worldwide, focusing on promoting Chinese culture. Named after China’s most eminent philosopher and the father of Confucianism, the Chinese Government has announced plans to establish 100 such institutes overseas.Traditional Chinese culture generally refers to China’s academic culture, including philosophy, history, archeology, literature and linguistics. The name “traditional Chinese culture” came into existence at the beginning of last century, to provide a distinction between Chinese and Western cultures. For ordinary citizens, traditional Chinese culture has emphasized Confucianism and Taoism, because they had served as a kind of state religion for thousands of years during China’s feudal period. Since last century, the fate of traditional culture has gone through much turmoil. The Cultural Revolution(1966-76) shattered all ideologies and religions. During that period, Confucianism and Taoism were criticized and abandoned as feudal nonsense.China’s opening-up and reform, which began in the late 1970s, awakened people’s attention to their ancient culture. Since the 1990s, the public’s interest in traditional Chinese culture has kept growing. Children started to learn classics like the Three-Character Classic and Analects of Confucius, Lao Zi and Zhuang Zi. Universities provided special classes on traditional Chinese culture. And institutes focused on the study of traditional Chinese culture were founded. The enthusiasm was unprecedented.Since the end of last year, one of China’s best universities, Peking University, established a Qianyuan Traditional Chinese Culture Class under its Department of Philosophy. Despite its high tuition fee of 24,000 yuan a year, demand is exceeding supply. It is not uncommon for business leaders to fly across the country to Beijing to take the class. Renmin University of China was next to set up a special institute that recruits students nationwide. Now almost all the renowned universities of arts in Chinahave established such institutes. From this year, Peking University initiated a service that allows cell phone owners to subscribe to messages featuring classic words from Chinese culture, similar to news or weather services. One message per day costs a monthly subscription fee of 10 yuan. In addition, some training institutions in Guangzhou and Shenzhen in south China hold lectures teaching students how to adapt the ancient cultural messages to modern company management. The courses last from several days to several months, while the tuition fees can vary from a few thousand yuan to tens of thousands yuan. While it’s good to give attention to traditional Chinese culture, questions arise over people chasing after culture like maniacs. There is no denying that the revival of the culture relies on education. However, how should the public learn traditional Chinese culture? Should the culture be taught back at schools or must it be combined with real life? And what is to be gained from reviving traditional Chinese culture anyway? The form doesn’t matterQiu Zi (chief editor of Beijing’s Culture Vision magazine): In the old days, the passing down of traditional Chinese culture was conducted in private schools or family ancestral halls, while Buddhism was taught in temples. These facilities are not freely available today, so how do we learn culture in modern days? In a market economy society, traditional Chinese culture education is weakening as the social mechanism has changed much. To revive the culture, relevant education should be strengthened and brought backto today’s life. As for forms of education or high tuition, it’s not the focus and we needn’t spend much time discussing it. Wang Zhenglun, a 33-year-old who established the Traditional Chinese Culture Club, said that now nobody knew what was the best way to carry out such education, so why not be tolerant to new methods?Tolerance itself constitutes an important component of the traditional Chinese culture. What needs to be discussed, against a background where modern business methods clash with traditional cultures, is the necessity to calmly work out an effective method that can fit the current need and help combine these cultures with market economy principles. Wu Xiangzhou (professor with the School of Literaturein Capital Normal University): Giving attention to learning is social progress. Presently Peking University and Renmin University of China have established special institutes on traditional Chinese culture. There is also Chinese culture learning facilities provided by some Internet sites. Research institutes and trial educators are springing up across the country now all aimed at passing down traditional culture.Dai Xiaolin (writer of Beijing Morning Post): Most Chinese people find it difficult to accept an easy way of teaching their traditional culture. I think it’s completely unnecessary. Teaching culture via cell phone is undoubtedly a thing to be praised, as it uses modern communications, is reasonably priced, and conveys the professors’understanding of traditional Chinese culture.A healthy message platform can surely create a win-win situation. Operators and universities make their profits, while cell phone users get some knowledge of their traditional culture. Isn’t this a good idea?Tang Yijie (professor with the Department of Philosophy, Peking University): There have been two peakperiods of learning traditional Chinese culture since the 1990s: first in 1992 when scholars began to get reacquainted with their roots and now, the second period, where a wider audience is becoming interested.Entrepreneurs and kindergarten kids all show their interests in traditional Chinese classics. I am expecting a boom of traditional culture in the 21st century.Industrialization leads traditional Chinese culture nowhereLou Yulie (professor with the Department of Philosophy, Peking University): It’s been the focus of much attention how to develop and popularize our traditional culture. Many schools are targeting business people in search of profit. This trend will certainly lead the culture study in the wrong direction. The public should not take studying traditional culture as mere fashion. At the beginning of the last century, studying traditional culture seemed to be necessary for our nation’s own cultural development. Studying traditional culture became popular due to the need to rethink the problems coming from Western civilization and our own traditionalroots. At that time, the boom was not utilitarian. In contrast, popularity of traditional culture today is different. It is fast becoming utilitarian. The study of traditional Chinese culture is operated as an industry. In my own opinion, supplying traditional Chinese culture via cell phone messages is indeed a business operation, which comes from a combination of some elements of traditional Chinese culture and modern technology. It’s clear proof of making traditional Chinese culture a business medium. What we should be clear about now is whether or not the popularity of traditional culture is a surface phenomenon or something we should actively pursue in the process of culture development. We have realized that neither Western civilization nor traditional culture alone can solve all our problems in the country’s modernization efforts. Real traditional culture should make its own contributions to solving problems. And such communication of traditional culture shouldn’t be profit-oriented.Xu Youyu (Beijing scholar): To be frank, what I hate most about people’s frenzy in studying traditional Chineseculture is the over-exaggerated promotion far beyond pursuing and teaching knowledge. In the quest of advocating traditional culture, many people devote themselves to giving lectures, organizing meetings and being interviewed instead of focusing on the topic at hand. The cultural study is becoming nothing more than a public relations exercise in many cases, and there is little Confucian discipline left in them.At present, the popularity of traditional culture shows a tendency of being used for business purposes. For instance, the Qianyuan Traditional Culture Classroom set up by Peking University’s Department of Philosophy charges an annual tuition of 24,000 yuan and most of its students are business leaders. How can the cost of a teaching program be that high? We can only consider that the teaching party is charging exorbitant amounts while the students are using money to gain a name for them.Obviously, the China Traditional Culture Club is also using culture to make profits. It advocates that all its students should be entrepreneurs or senior management personnel. I have no idea what kind of traditional culture class this is. Is it only a moneymaking class under theguise of a traditional cultural class? What cultural resources can it give and what knowledge can it teach? Wu Ming (graduate student of the Department of Chinese Language and Culture, Beijing Normal University): Traditional Chinese culture cannot be understood only by reciting a few sentences and neither be used as something to indicate a refined person. Cell phone messages can only help people know some classic words, but if you really want to learn traditional culture, text messages are far from enough.Wei Shu (researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences): Nowadays studying traditional Chinese culture is becoming popular, which is a good thing. However, serious learning should be the way. Some organizations should not make profits through advocating learning traditional cultures, as that is against the very principal of the cultural message in the first place.Qi Yudong (director of MBA program, Capital University of Economics and Trade): You can’t depend on teachers to give detailed methods to solve a company’s problems using traditional Chinese cultural training. The real value ofthe culture lies in changing the attitude and mindset of management personnel. It’s all about enlightenment and opening the mind. Never try finding management skills from traditional Chinese culture.Dear Readers,“Forum” is a column that provides a space for varying perspectives on contemporary Chinese society. Should We Chinese Celebrate the Western Festivals?

Should We Chinese Celebrate the Western Festivals?

Should We Chinese Celebrate the WesternFestivals?Whether we Chinese should celebrate the western festivals or not has been a subject of heated discussion and argument among people of all ranks recent years. Some say that it’s improper for the western fes tivals to be celebrated in China because such a festival as Christmas possesses strong religious sense and colors. They are deeply convinced that on the one hand the popularity of the western festivals in China is the result of the foreign cultural invasio n and the infiltration1 of the foreign “soft force”. On the other hand, more and more Chinese people, especially young people, have lost their interest in our traditional Chinese festivals like Mid-autumn Festival, Dragon-boat Festival, Tomb-sweeping Day, Double Ninth Festival etc., showing clearly that some countrymen have lost their self-confidence in our national culture and customs. At the advent of the western festivals, such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and so forth, a festive air scarc ely seen before appears across the country, attracting thousands upon thousands of Chinese people. In general, the Chinese young men almost don’t know the profound implications of our traditional Chinese festivals, instead they are familiar with the western festivals and go after them like a flock of ducks, which has brought about a serious shock to the Chinese traditional culture and the sense of the community. If the situation continues to develop like this, the consequence would be too ghastly to contemplate. They say as most of us don’t believe in Christ, God or religions, and few of us know the meaning of Christmas, what’s the point of celebrating it? Christmas is a festival full of religious colors and meanings for the Christians. If the non-Christians participate in the observance, they are subservient to foreigners. So let’s keep our mind on the traditional Chinese festivals instead. Others think that being one of the achievements won by the Chinese people in the reform and opening to the outside world, the western festivals are right and proper to be celebrated by us Chinese. It has nothing to do with worshiping and having blind faith in things foreign. A case in point is that Christmas is springing up quietly and soundlessly in our country and becoming widely popular day by day. As is known to all that Christmas Day, December 25, isthe most important festival in the western world, although it is almost certainly not the day on which Jesus Christ was born. Originally Christmas was a religious rite—the “Christ Mass” ---and it did not become a fixed holiday until 440 A.D. . Today, Christmas is still observed as an anniversary of the birthday of Christ, but its religious aspect is almost lost to the lay world amidst all the commercialisation6 and human excitement of it. The celebration usually includes an exchange of cards and presents among relatives and friends, decking the sitting room out with a Christmas tree, and a feast featuring a turkey or a goose. People can take advantage of this moment to entertain themselves, get together and extend their greetings each other. It was said that ten doctors from the most famous universities of China published an article in the newspapers, putting forward a joint proposal with signatures to call on the fellow coun trymen to “resist the western expansion of culture and the foreign soft force”. The article begins with the words that the western culture has turned from gentle breeze and fine rain into violent wind and driving rain. The article continues that when Christmas is around the corner, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels and other places in China are beautifully decorated with Christmas trees and other Christmas ornaments. The nets, newspapers, TV stations and radios are filled with the Christmas information while countless Christmas cards and tens of millions of Christmas messages are sent everywhere through the post offices and the mobilephones. It is on the Christmas Eve that people come together and rejoice with wild excitement, drinking, singing, and dancing. As is mentioned above that our society is evolving into a society with foreign overculture. In the meantime, they criticize the merchants for the responsibility of encouraging and increasing the Christmas’ influence in China. It is common knowledge that every nation has its own special festivals with colorful backgrounds, which are closely connected with its special history or excellent culture. So festivals are the products of the sedimentary accretion8 of a nation’s culture over thousands of years. At the primitive stage of the social and civilized community and society, many of the festivals, no matter whether Chinese or foreign, can be traced back to different religions or customs in the distant past. Take the Chinese Spring Festival as an example, setting firecrackers was an effective way for the ancient people to guard against the tigers and wolfs and expel the demons and ghosts but these days the festival has become a joyful symbol for the Chinese people. Thecontinuous prosperity of the society and the steady progress of the culture promote the development of festive culture. The main characteristic of the festivals is as follows: the festivals with good vitality were gradually freed from the mysterious and superstitious9 atmosphere and evolved into the real festivals for the purpose of get-together and entertainment. If a festival comes into being, it will be handed down over ages from generations to generations with a relative independence and stability. Now and then the social conditions being changed, the festivals remain the shadow of the old habits and customs. Now that many habits and customs have been passed over to the present days and accepted by the people, they show the dogged life force in themselves, but it doesn’t mean the festivals ar e invariable. On the contrary, they are continuously changing, some of which have died out on account of the backward and the outmoded conventions and customs.Nowadays some of the festivals are characterized by cross-nations and trans-areas. In other w ords, it’s the result of economic and cultural exchanges of various countries. It can be said that the process of the development of the human civilization is the very process of mutual infiltration and mutual integration, during which one culture absorbs the nourishment13 of other cultures and each culture develops respectively on a new high degree. During the reform and opening, China needs to assimilate a good deal of foreign progressive culture and swallow anything and everything. As a result, the econo mic integration brings in the festive integration. It’s right to lay emphasis on our traditional festivals but it’s not proper to reject the foreign ones on this account. As late Chairman Mao said: “Make the past serve the present and foreign things serve China.” In fact, China has been receiving some foreign festivals on a selective basis since the reform and opening like Christmas Day, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, which have taken root and sprouted across our country, becoming popular festivals among the people. For one thing, with the various communications and media of the day changing with each passing day, the exchanges in each field are on increase day by day, for another the traditional Chinese culture and customs are being adopted and the Chinese festivals are being celebrated by more and more western peoples. As a traditional Chinese festival and a typical Eastern culture, the Chinese Spring Festival is being observed by foreigners in many countries. The foreign people enjoy Chine se dumplings, set off firecrackers, perform lion’s dancesand take part in all kinds of festive activities. In America and Canada, not only are the stamps with the twelve Chinese animals issued by the postal department but also the Chinese commemorative coins by the central banks each year. When the Spring Festival is drawing near, leaders of some governments pay New Year calls to the Chinese living in there through televisions, broadcasting, and newspapers. The local leaders at all levels even take part in the Spring Festival observances or parades. In some states of the United States, the Chinese Spring Festival has even been set legal festival.I don’t think it’s necessary to find a definite answer to whether we Chinese should celebrate the foreign festiv als or not. We ought to respect others’ decision instead of interference in their choices. It’s not a bad thing for the people to take advantage of the western festivals, entertaining themselves, getting together and exchanging greetings. To the whole soci ety, Christmas can stimulate the country’s economy and the people’s consumption, increase the income of tourism and catering industry and other entertainment industries, creating more social wealth. With the rapid development of society, science and technology, the globalization of the global village is the inevitability of the globalization of economy. For example, the Buddhist culture originated from India from 6th century to 5th century B.C. was created by Buddha and the Moslem born on the Arabian Peninsula was created by Mohammed in the beginning of the 7th century. They are not our native cultures but they have taken root in China for thousands of years. When both Buddhism and Moslem were spread across China, they were smoothly and naturally integrated with the Chinese culture, having great effects on China’s society, politics, culture and life. So to say, at the time we popularize and carry forward China’s traditional culture, we should critically absorb the advanced cultures from abroad. All in all, i t’s natural for the Chinese people, especially young people, to take part in the Christmas activities, relaxing, unbosoming and relieving themselves. They are so attracted by the Christmas decorations, colors and music that no one looks into its religious background and traditional meaning of Christmas. I think if you are not interested in the celebration of the western festivals, you can ignore them but don’t complain and make veiled criticism. Some people like to celebrate the western festivals but I’m su re they neither identify with them nor betray our own culture。

假如你是李华,你的英国朋友戴维想了解中国文化和语言和,写一封Dear David,I’m delighted to know you are interested in traditional Chinese festivals. You might have never heard of Chong Yang festival, but it is actually my favorite. It falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. Since nine is the largest single number, it i s viewed as Senior Citizens’ Day. People often do activities like going hiking and admiring flowers on this day. As for me, I had never thought about doing anything for the elderly until I learnt about the festival at school. Our teacher asked us to do a nice thing for our grandparents. For the first time in my life, I washed my grandma’s feet. I’ll never forget the sweet smile she wore and the happiness I felt. You see, I like Chong Yang festival not just because of the popular activities. The most important reason is that it serves as reminder that I should do something to show my appreciation of my grandparents’ love for me. Yours, Li Hua Possible version 2 Dear Peter, I’m very delighted to know you are interested in traditional Chinese festivals. I want to introduce the most important one, Spring Festival. During every Spring Festival all the family members get together to celebrate the ChineseLunar New Year. On the eve of the day, we often sit around the table to have a big dinner, and jiaozi is the most traditional food. In many places, people like to set off firecrackers and put up spring couplets on the door. Children like the festival very much, because they will receive lucky money for good fortune. Spring Festival is a time I look forward to all year round, because it is the happiest time, when I can enjoy the pure bliss of family reunion.Yours,Li Hua。

Should we revive traditional Chinese characters or continue using simplified characters?
There has been a lot of debate over the acceptability of simplified Chinese characters recently.Supporters hold that they are more practical nowadays and can also preserve and promote traditional culture. But not everyone takes it appropriate .culturally ,it will prevent us from inheriting traditional culture ;politically, reviving traditional characters promotes national unity .However,I think constant simplification of Chinese characters could not be reversed in view of the practicality adaptability to contemporary society and novelty of our vigorous traditional culture.
Firstly,as language,Chinese characters appeared in purpose of helping interpersonal communication. As a tool, the more practical and convenient it is,the more beneficial it is.
Then,in today’s society, efficiency matters most. For example, compared with peers in ancient time who majored in traditional Chinese, students struggling over a range of subjects nowadays have not enough time to learn complicated traditional characters.By contrast, simplification ones meets the needs of modern education better. It seems the same story in other respect of our society.
Finally, the key to flourishing our Chinese traditional culture, lies in novel changes. Simplification of Chinese characters illustrates such change well. Although it may have less aesthetic value than traditional ones,it will not be weakened in cultural function and easier to learn and use, which is surely a kind of cultural progress.
All in all, simplified Chinese characters will create more chance for Chinese culture to flourish in the future.。
