The Fifth Period
Teaching Aims:
1. Go over the grammar-the Direct Speech and the Indirect Speech, pointing out and correcting the mistakes that the students often make in changing the Direct Speech into the Indirect Speech.
2. Summarize the changes of the pronouns, tenses, adverbials in turning the Direct Speech into the Indirect Speech. Teaching Important Points:

2. By doing plenty of exercises, let the students know how to make a statement correctly in the Indirect Speech. Teaching Difficult Points:
1.Let the students know how to tell the difference between
an order and a request.
2. Let the students know how to change the pronouns when turning the Direct Speech into the Indirect Speech. Teaching Methods:
Review, explanation, inductive methods
Teaching Aids:

2.a blackboard
Teaching Procedures;
Step I Greetings
Greet the whole class as usual
Step II Revision
(Teacher shows some sentences on the screen)
1. “Please open the window,” the t eacher said to Li Ming.
2. “Don't play games in the classroom,” the monitor said to us.
3. He asked, “Where are you going to get off, John?”
4. He said to me, “You are wrong.”
5. “Are you a Party member?” he asked.
6. “A sport meet will be held in our school next week,” Li Mei said to her parents. T: There are some sentences on it. They are all direct speeches. Now I'll ask some students to turn them into indirect speech. (Six students are asked to write their answers on the blackboard. Then the teacher checks them and points out the mistakes. )
T: The first sentence is a request. So you should use the verb “asked” before the
o bject “Li Ming”. The second one i s an order, so you can use the verb “told”or
“ordered”before the objects. That is, you should judge the mood of the direct speech and then decide whether it is a request or an order. Are you clear about that?
Ss: Yes.
T: OK. Look at the last four sentences. The direct speech includes two statements and two questions. We know, an object clause can be used here in changing the Direct Speech into the Indirect Speech. But we must pay attention to the changes of the pronouns, the tenses and the adverbials when we change the Direct Speech into the Indirect
Speech.
Answers:
1. The teacher asked Li Ming to open the window.
2. The monitor told us not to play games in the classroom
3. He asked John where he was going to get off.
4. He told me that I was wrong.
5. He asked me if/whether I was a Party member.
6. Li Mei told her parents that a sports meet would be held the next week. Step III Presentation
T: From the mistakes you have made, I can see that you haven't made clear the changes of tenses and the adverbial when changing the Direct Speech into the Indirect Speech. Now look at the screen. Let's have a summary and try to learn them by heart.

T: There is something else I must tell you, only when the main clause is the past tens can we change the tense in the clause
Step IV Practice and Explanation
T: If we remember all these changes in the two tables. I think you won’t make mistakes in the tenses and adverbials, But for the pronouns, you should change them according to the different situation. In a word, you must make others understand you. Now look at the sentence on the blackboard.
(Bb: “Please tell me your telephone number, Li Mei,”Yang Pei said. Can you turn this sentence into indirect speech?
S1: Let me try. Yang Pei asked LiMei to tell her his telephone number.
T: I'm afraid you've made a mistake .You should say: Yang Pei asked Li Mei to tell him her telephone number, write it on the Bb.)Are you clear about that?
S1: Yes.
T: Now let's do more exercises so that we can use the Indirect Speech freely and correctly. Look at the screen, please.
Correct the mistakes in the following Indirect Speech.
1. The doctor said to Linda, “Take the medicine three times a day.”
The doctor asked Linda to take the medicine three times a day.

Turn the following into Indirect Speech.
1. “I’ve been there twice,” he said.
2. She said, “Mother, is the boy very clever?”

12. “Be quiet, children” said Mrs. Wilson.
(Ask some students to do these exercises one by one. At the same time the teacher corrects the mistakes that the students make.)
T: You should pay more attention to the eighth sentence. When we turn this sentence into the indirect speech, we don't change the tense in the direct speech though the main verb of the sentence is the past tense. Because the Direct Speech is a truth. It won't change with time. Are you clear about that?
Ss: Yes.
T: I'll give you another example: The teacher said to the pupils, “The moon moves round the earth.”(Write it on the Bb.)Who'd like to change this sentence into Indirect Speech?
S2: Let me try. The teacher told the pupils that the moon moves round the earth. (Write it on the Bb.)
T: Quite right.
(Show the following on the screen.)

1. He said(that)he had been there twice
2. She asked her mother if the boy was very clever.
3. He asked me who would take me to the office.
4. She said (that) she was doing her homework then.
5. He told Tom not to do the work any more.
