Laurie Horam never thought of himself as musical. At home, his dad never listened to music, while one of his boarding school teachers labelled him tone-deaf. But last month he started to play the harmonica (口琴) on the streets of Bradford. People clapped, danced and threw coins into his case for the local food bank.
Eight years ago, Horam, a retired civil servant, was on his way back from a trip with his family. Gavin, one of his sons who cover a range of instruments, stopped at a music shop. He walked out and said: “Here you are. I bought this for you, Dad. We must have got our musical abilities from you. It’s a harmonica. I’ll try to show you how to play a bit.” Horam was surprised and confused.
They went to their local pub. Gavin played the guitar and Horam sat in the corner with his harmonica, trying to make a sound that no one would hear. After six months, he was invited into the group. He discovered a talent for improvisation (即兴表演) , responding to a note within a millisecond without batting an eyelid. “I don’ t play by ear. I play by heart.” Actually, Horam says, “My harmonica plays me — how I feel what I am, and what I’ve been.”
Music has enriched life with friendship and made Horam feel “part of something much bigger” than himself. “At a time when the circle of life might be shrinking, mine is expanding,” he says. “Maybe we never know completely who we are or what we can do.”
24.Why did Horam play the harmonica on the streets of Bradford?
A.To recall the good old days.
B.To beg food from passers-by.
C.To raise money for charity.
D.To live his childhood dream.
25.What is Gavin’s attitude to his father’s musical ability?
A.Unclear.B.Positive.C.Doubtful.D.Negative.
26.What can Horam do by playing the harmonica?
A.Express himself.B.Make a lot of money.
C.Enjoy the fame.D.Sharpen his hearing.
27.What does music bring to Horam?
A.A sensitive soul.B.A comfortable life.
C.A new understanding of family.D.A broader circle of life.

Teen brains aged faster than normal from stress by at least three years, a study has found. The study, published in Biological Psychiatry: Global Open Science, was the first to compare examinations of the physical structures of teenagers’ brains from before and after the stress started, and to document significant differences.
Researchers knew teens had higher levels of depression, anxiety and fearfulness than before the stress. But we knew nothing about the effects on their brains. The researchers found growth in brain areas that control access to some memories and help control fear, stress and other emotions.
Premature(过早的) aging of kids’ brains isn’t a positive development. Their stressful childhood experiences not only make people easier to suffer from depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses, they can raise the risk of cancer, heart disease and other long-term negative outcomes.
The scientists tried to make out how the stress itself may have impacted the physical structure of the children’s brains and their mental health. They matched pairs of children with the same age, gender and stress. “That allowed us to compare 16-year olds before the stress with different 16-year olds assessed after the stress,” said Ian Gotlib, a psychology professor at Stanford University.
To determine the brain age of their samples, the researchers fed their brain examinations into a machine-learning model for predicting brain age developed by the ENIGMA-Brain Age working group, a co-operation among scientists who share their brain image data sets. They also evaluated mental health outcomes reported by the matched pairs. They found more severe symptoms of anxiety, depression and internalizing(内在化
的) problems in the group that had experienced the stress.
Dan Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, noted that many individuals experience post-traumatic(创伤后的) growth after a stressful experience. “This is a useful initial study,” agreed David Fassler, clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Vermont. “I expect the results will inform the design of future research initiatives.”
28.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.Researchers had a good knowledge of aging.B.Stress greatly influenced teenagers’ brains.
C.Brain growth improved teenagers’ happiness.D.Bad memories resulted in negative emotions.
29.What enabled scientists to do research according to Ian Gotlib?
A.The application of advanced technology.B.The accurate analysis of the data provided.
C.The participation of volunteer teenagers.D.The previous experience of the researchers.
30.Why was the machine-learning model developed?
A.To satisfy the need of the market.B.To evaluate the brain age of samples.
C.To predict mental health outcomes.D.To solve internalizing problems.
31.What was David Fassler’s attitude to the study?
A.Favorable.B.Indifferent.C.Doubtful.D.Unclear.

Water poisoning is caused by too much consumption of water during a short period of time. Water in and of itself is not poisonous by any means, but rapid intake of a large quantity of water can break the careful balance of sodium(钠)in the body fluids(体液). This contributes to a swelling of the cells, often in the central nervous system, including the brain.
When the cells can no longer bear the pressure, they can begin to die. This is indicated in serious forms of water poisoning. Symptoms of this condition include vomiting, headache and unresponsiveness. When the sodium in the blood falls to dangerous levels, brain damage and possibly death may occur.
What is a fatal(致命的)amount of water can vary from person to person, depending on one’s state of health, his or her physical activity at the time, the temperature and the amount of time in which the person consumes the water. For some, a one-time consumption of three liters can prove deadly. Although the person consuming the water may lose a lot of fluid during heavy labor or exercise, the electrolytes(电解质)are not replaced fast enough to avoid
water poisoning.
Those particularly at risk for water poisoning are athletes engaged in long distance running like a marathon. Due to the need to replace large quantities of lost fluid, runners must drink a lot of water. This can lead to poisoning, so runners must replace their fluids with sports drinks that have added electrolytes. Other factors that contribute to water poisoning include activities that stimulate heavy sweating. The person working under extreme heat or intense humidity(湿气)must be careful when consuming water in order to maintain electrolyte balance. Mental diseases can also lead to water poisoning. Psychogenic polydipsia is a condition in which the affected person feels a need to drink a lot of water for unknown reasons.
32.What harm does water poisoning bring?
A.It can affect brain function.B.It disturbs the balance of sodium
C.It causes a drop in blood pressure.D.It tends to make its victims nervous.
33.What can we know about proper amount of water to drink?
A.Three liters per day is deadly.B.No single rule fits everyone.
C.It doesn’t bother healthy people.D.Physical activity is its decisive factor.
34.Who would probably fall victim to water poisoning?
A.A patient suffering from stomachache.
B.A laborer working with heavy sweating
C.An athlete fond of drinking sports drinks.
D.A teenager doing appropriate exercise daily.
35.What might be discussed in the paragraph that follows?
A.What has been found about sports drinks.
B.What else contributes to water poisoning.
C.What are the symptoms of water poisoning.
D.What can be done to avoid water poisoning.

Museums can be overwhelming. With thousands of pieces there, how do you know which to focus on? And
once you see a piece you like, how do you interact with it? Here is some advice on how to have a meaningful connection when you look at art.
Get up close and personal.____36____ Therefore, take your time to observe qualities about a work that may not come through on a computer screen. That includes its look and the feel of its surface, the marks made by the brush and the path your eyes take when viewing the work.
Stand back.Next, take a few steps back, stand in the center — and observe what’s happening in the big picture. What’s going on in the piece? ____37____ What are they doing? How are they related?
Look at it from an angle. Then try looking at an artwork from its sides, because you might catch something you might not have seen straight on. If it’s something like The Ambassadors by Holbein at The National Gallery in London, if you stand to the side, you’ll see something that from front on looks very different. ____38____ That’s called anamorphic art.
Move your body. If you’re looking at a painting, you can take a finger to the air and trace the outline of the figure or the movement of the brushstrokes. ____39____ This can help you see and feel what it might be like to make this artwork from the artist’s perspective.
Consider the subject of the art. That can have a profound effect on how you feel about the work-and perhaps you can learn something from it. Take the example of Andrew Wyeth’s famous painting, Christina’s World, which depicts (描绘) a girl with a muscle disease crawling across a field to get to her home in the distance. The painting personifies (体现) determination.____40____
A.So just keep an open mind.
B.What have they gone through?
C.When you stand to the side, it changes.
D.How are the figures in the piece arranged?
E.We have the luxury of seeing the real thing at a museum.
F.When looking at sculptures, try the poses with your body.
G.It can in a way relieve your stress to know we have this inner strength.

Anxious exam candidates’ problem is the run-up or preparation, not the exam itself.
Exams are always tense and worrying, especially for those of an anxious disposition. The silence of the hall; the ____41____ of the clock; the content expression of the person at the neighbouring desk. It therefore seems ____42____ surprising that those who worry about tests do systematically ____43____ than those who do not. Unexpectedly, according to research in Psychological Science by Maria Theobald, it is not the pressure of the exam which causes the problem. It is the ____44____ pressure.
What Dr Therobald found was that ____45____ on the day of the test did not predict exam performance at all. What predicted it was the level of knowledge a student ____46____ in the earlier learning activities and the mock (模拟) exam. Those who ____47____ well in these also did well in the real thing, ____48____ how anxious they were on the day. What actually ____49____ students were high levels of anxiety during the weeks before the exam took place. The greater a student’s anxiety in the days before the exam, the lower his or her knowledge-gain was during that period, leaving that student with less material to _____50_____ during the exam itself.
This is a positive discovery, for it suggests the anxious might achieve better result by adjusting their _____51_____ when revising. Dr. Theobald notes that test-anxiety is at its worst when students have low_____52_____of success and at the same time know that passing the exam is _____53_____ important. To reduce this anxiety, she proposes a _____54_____ for students to consider as they revise. First, they can raise their belief in their own abilities by reminding themselves of just how much they know. Second, they can _____55_____ the significance of the test by reminding themselves that, while it is important, it is not a life or death situation. It really isn’t.
41.A.clicking B.ticking C.dropping D.ringing
42.A.slightly B.basically C.hardly D.completely
43.A.worse B.better C.less D.higher

We arrive for the good times, such as when the grandson is available to lie in our arms and glancing up at the world as if to comprehend its wonder.
Why, you may ask, would a young couple be willing___61___(do) all the hard work, while the grandparents enjoy the good times? It’s a fair question. When we arrive, ___62___couple has usually been up, all night with dark circles. The grandchild, though, is full of energy. 67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My adventure short story took place in Nepal, where I did the Mohare Danda Trek — which was no easy feat; however, in my opinion, it is truly one of the best hiking trails in the world. The Mohare Danda is one of Nepal’s newest treks, opened in 2010 as an Eco-trek to help support and develop the Parbat and Myagdi districts.
I’ve always enjoyed such kind of hikes as my friends and I conquer one destination after another. As you gaze upon the mountain peaks, interact with locals, and take in the nature that surrounds you, it’s hard not to feel immense gratitude for such adventures. This is particularly true when we reached the top of Mohare Danda at 3,313 meters (10,869feet) and realized just how far we’d come.
It was a stunning hike, though my first day got off to a difficult start as I found myself violently ill. Ascending (爬升)higher and higher, sweat pouring down my face and my backpack threatening to pull me to the ground, I stopped constantly to gasp for breath and throw up quite a bit — until we reached the high altitude tea house where we’d be staying the night. The accommodation was rough, to say the least, which was a small family-run hotel with squat toilets, spiders, and no showers.
While the group went in for tea, I laid on the ground, nearly crying from the physical pain from the challenging hike and discomfort from the sickness. At that moment, I truly didn’t think I could do it. But then I opened my eyes to the beauty that surrounded me— scattered wild flowers all over the mountains, feasting yaks and buffaloes, high-altitude villages and the stunning terrain of the Annapurna Himalayas, which were the type of
beauty you truly can’t find anywhere else —and realized that if I gave up now I’d never forgive myself.
The hotel owner was very kind, who brought me warm water and some medicine. He also suggested that I bring some oxygen just in case, and I did so, which turned out to be life-saving.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

After a good rest, the illness lessened and I felt eager to experience this hike.
