The seed vault(种子地窖)
A lot of countries need different kinds of seeds so that they can plant them again. There is an important reason for this, Sometimes plants can't grow in a country because of bad weather or disease, so farmers need new seeds.
You can keep seeds in a" seed vault". It's a place at a special temperature. The seeds don't grow, but they can live for a long time. Norway has the biggest seed vault in the world ﹣the Svalbard Global Seed Vault﹣and it has seeds from a lot of different countries.
The vault is on the island of Spitsbergen. The island is about one thousand kilometers from the North Pole. It's a very cold place so it's good for seeds. Above the ground, the doorway is small, but inside, the building is huge. You walk down a long corridor (走廊), which is one hundred and thirty meters inside a mountain. At the end of it, there are three large areas with seeds.
There are about half a million kinds of seeds inside the vault. For example, there are kinds of seeds for rice from Asia and Africa, 32 kinds of seeds for potatoes from Ireland and seeds for different tomatoes from the USA.
The seed vault has space for a lot more seeds. You can put about 2.2 billion(十亿)seeds inside. The seeds can live here for thousands of years because of the cold temperature of ﹣18℃. So in the future, humans can grow any seed they want. In other words, the seed vault is the difference between life and death.
(1)Why can't plants grow in a country? (within 6 words)
(2)Where is the biggest seed vault in the world? (within 2 words)
(3)How far is the Svalbard Global Seed Vault from the North Pole? (within 4 words)

6.根据短文内容,完成下面的表格。

Have you ever wondered what an American high school is really like? This article will describe a typical (典型的) high school and its students.
A typical American high school has several large buildings and enough space for about l, 500 students. Every student is given a locker. When students first arrive at school, they go straight to their lockers to put away or get their textbooks and to hang up their outdoor clothes. As American textbooks are expensive, students would rather loan (租借)than buy them. Students must pay back if they lose any of them.
American students have different types of school transport. They usually take a yellow school bus or walk to school if they live close enough. Sometimes their parents drive them to school. When they turn 16 years old, most take a free driving class at school for one term. If students earn passing grades in the class and also pass their state driver's exam, they can begin driving themselves to school.
Each day, students take six or seven classes. They must take Science, Maths, English and Social Studies. They can choose Art, Homemaking, Fashion Design and other classes. In some schools students are required to take one or more of the following special classes: Health Education, Physical Education or Foreign Language Studies. Students move to different classrooms for each subject. This is because each teacher has their own classroom. There is a five-minute break between classes, to give the students the time to hurry to their next class.
The regular school day usually ends early in the afternoon. After school more than half of the students are involved in after-school activities. These activities include sports-especially football, basketball, baseball and soccer or clubs, such as yearbook, speech, school newspaper, photograph or student government.
7.根据短文内容,填写所缺单词,每个空格只填1个单词。

'USA? Britain? Which country is better to study in?' We often hear such discussions. As China opens its door, it is a dream for many Chinese students to study abroad. They want to learn about the outside world.
It's true that studying abroad can help students develop themselves. Their foreign language skills will be improved and it may be easier to find jobs.
But there are problems that should be considered. Language is the first. Students must spend a lot of time learning another language.
Students must also learn to live without parents' care and deal with all kinds of things they haven't had to do before, like looking after themselves. There are reports about Chinese students abroad running into an ocean of difficulties and giving up finally. When they have to take care of themselves, it is hard for students to study well.
Finally, studying abroad brings a heavy burden (负担)to the family. For most Chinese parents, the cost of studying abroad is very high. But is it worth it?
We know that there are many famous people who have achieved success through their hard work in China. Liu Xiang is a good example. Once an American teacher invited him there, but he refused. He kept training hard with his Chinese teacher. He surprised the world when he won a gold medal at the Athens Olympic Games. So when you wonder which country is better to study in, think again.

While he was there, Marco Polo worked for Kublai Khan, the emperor of China. He was able to learn and experience many things that were new to Europeans. In his diary, he wrote, "Kublai Khan's palace is the greatest I've ever seen. The streets of the new capital, Dadu, are so straight
and so wide." Paper money also took him by surprise, since it was not yet in use in the West at that time. Homes were heated with "bla ck stones… which burn like wood." Those stones were coal, and most of the Europeans knew little about it then.

Do you clean your school desks every day? If not, then maybe it's about the time for you to get started. Keyboards, computer mice and telephone dials are infected (polluted)with lots of germs(细菌), according to scientists from the University of Arizona, the US.
The study suggests that office equipment should be regularly cleaned. “Desks are in fact germs' cafeterias(自助餐厅),” said Charles Garbage, a biologist who took part in the study. “They are breakfast bars, lunch tables and everything el se.” The desks at your school are probably not different.
The scientists found that telephones in workplaces have almost 4,000 germs/cm2, keyboards 500 and computer mice around 250. The office as a whole contains 4, 750germs/cm2.
When some people catch a cold or flu, they leave germs on the surfaces(表面) they touch during the day. Some flu germs can live on the surface for up to 72 hours, so the germs can easily move to other people. If you're ever wondered why everyone catches the germs when only one student has a cold, now you know the answer.
Experts in the US last month warned about the spread(传播)of the germs during flu seasons. They reminded Americans to cover their noses and mouths while sneezing, often wash their hands and clean their office desks.
Hand washing is the most important. Killing germs during hand washing is useful only if you clean carefully with soap and water for at least 30 seconds. You should pay close attention to cleaning your thumbs, fingertips and fingernails.
