Last year, 138,000San Franciscoresidents used Airbnb, a popular app designed to connect home renters and travelers. It’s a striking number for a city with a population of about 850,000, and it was enough for Airbnb to win a major victory in local elections, asSan Franciscovoters struck down a debatable rule that would have placed time restrictions and other regulations on short-term rental services.
The company fiercely opposed the measure, Proposition F, with a nearly $10 million advertising campaign. It also contacted its San Franciscan users with messages urging them to vote against Proposition F.
Most people think of Airbnb as a kind of couch-surfing app. The service works for one-night stays on road trips and longer stays in cities, and it often has more competitive pricing than hotels. It’s a textbook example of the “sharing economy”, but not everyone is a fan.
The app has had unintended consequences inSan Francisco. As the San Francisco Chronicle reported last year, a significant amount of renting on Airbnb is not in line with the company’s image: middle-class families putting up a spare room to help make ends meet. Some users have taken advantage of the service, using it to turn their multiple properties into vacation rentals or even full-time rentals. Backers of Proposition F argued that this trend takes spaces off the conventional, better-regulated housing market and contributes to rising costs.
“The fact is, widespread abuse of short-term rentals is taking much needed housing off the market and harming our neighborhoods,” said ShareBetter SF, a group that supported Proposition F. Hotel unions have protested the company’s practices inSan Franciscoand other cities, saying that it creates an illegal hotel system.
San Franciscois in the middle of a long-term, deeply rooted housing crisis that has seen the cost of living explode. Actually, explode is a generous term. The average monthly rent for an apartment is around $4, 000. Located on a narrow outcropping of land overlooking the bay,San Franciscosimply doesn’t have enough space to
accommodate the massive inflow of young, high-salaried tech employees flocking toSilicon Valley.
As the Los Angeles Times reported, someSan Franciscoresidents supported the measure simply because it seemed like a way to check a big corporation. Opponents of Proposition F countered that the housing crisis runs much deeper, and that passing the rule would have discouraged a popular service while doing little to solve the city’s existing problems.
4. The intention of Proposition F is to ________.
A. place time limits in local election.
B. set limits on short-term rental.
C. strike down a controversial rule.
D. urge users to vote against Airbnb.
5. What is the negative consequence of Airbnb onSan Francisco?
A. It shrinks the living space of middle-class families.
B. Users are taken advantage of by the service financially.
C. It makes the house market more competitive.
D. It indirectly leads to high house rental price.
6. The housing crisis inSan Franciscoresults from ________.
A. explosion of the living cost
B. its geographic characteristics
C. generosity of local enterprises
D. inflow of migrant population
7. Theauthor’s attitude toward Proposition F is ________.
A. objective
B. supportive
C. negative
D. indifferent
C
ByteDance(字节跳动)Group’s TikTok, an overseas version of Chinese short video sharing app Douyin, faces an existential crisis in the United States, as murmurs of a “crackdown”(强制取缔)from the White House forced the Chinese company toengage in talks on selling its US business to Microsoft.
TikTok is the fastest-growing registered global mobile internet app, with more than 100 million users, and its rapid growth, especially in the US, is seen as a threat to Facebook. The US government has long viewed globally competitive Chinese high-tech companies including Huawei as a threat and done whatever it could to crack down on(打击)them in the name of “national security”.
The US government has not introduced any specific policy against TikTok only threatened it through a number of unclear statements.
According to the latest media reports, Microsoft is prepared to press ahead withthe negotiations to take over
TikTok’s US operations and complete the negotiations by Sept 15, following talks between Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and US President Donald Trump.
This means that TikTok will have to hand its fate over to some unpredictable power, and even have to sell its assets without the option of setting a price.
The US government has failed to find a reasonable legal excuse to deal with TikTok. All private data of TikTok’s US users are stored in the US and are unlikely to be transferred. Considering the US government is trying to deal with TikTok in a political way, TikTok should consider incorporating(合并)the dispute into the US legal process to assert(坚持)its legal rights and interests.
TiKTok’s core value lies in its unique algorithms,a product of artificial intelligence that represents the expertise of Chinese engineers and programmers with high-value intellectual property.
The US government’s move, which has forced ByteDance to sell TikTok to a US company, is similar to a forced technology transfer and an example of the US’ openseizureof Chinese intellectual property.
If ByteDance sells TikTok to a US company for “security reasons", that would set a dangerous precedent, motivating other countries where TikTok operates to follow the US administration's example and cause a chain reaction.
ByteDance is a young Chinese private company that cannot deal with a political game played by the US. But as a Chinese company that has gone global, ByteDance has reasons to take up legal means to defend its legal rights. The Chinese government can also consider examining whether the technology transfer in the deal violates China’s law and harms the country’s national interests.
8. What is the most valuable as for TikTok?
A. Its global popularity.
B. Its artificial intelligence.
C. Its registered global mobile internet app.
D. Its private data of TikTok’s worldwide users.
9. Why does the American government force the Chinese company to hand over TikTok’s US operations to a US company?
A. Out of so-called political reasons.
B. Out of so-called debt reasons.
C. Out of so-called technical reasons.
D. Out of so-called security reasons.
10. What does the underlined word “seizure”probably mean in Para. 8?
A. An untrue spoken statement about someone.
B. The use of legal authority to take sth from sb.
C. The crime of stealing sth from a person or place.
D. The act of trying to hurt somebody using physical violence.
11. What can be the best title for the news report?
A. TikTok must defend its rights legally
B. TikTok is seen as a threat to Facebook
C. ByteDance has to sell TikTok to a US company
D. ByteDance agrees to transfer technology
D
Imaginary friends in childhood refer to the invisible beings that a child gives a personality to and plays with for over three months.
Crabbycrab(蟹)appeared on a holiday in Norway by running out of my four-year-old son Fisher's ear after a night of tears from an earache. Like other childhood imaginary friends, Crabby should be a sign thatFisher's mind is growing and developing positively. Indeed, research shows that imaginary friends can help develop children's social skills.
Research has shown that the positive effects of having imaginary friends as a child continue into adulthood. Adolescents who remember their imaginary playmates have been found to use more activecoping(应对)styles, such as seeking advice from loved ones rather than bottle things up inside. Even adolescents with behavioral problems who had imaginary friends as children have been found to have better coping skills through the teenage years.
Scientists thinkthis could be because these teens have been able to adjust themselves to the social world with imagination rather than choose to be involved in relationships with more difficult classmates. It could also be because the imaginary friends help to reduce these adolescents, loneliness.
These teens are also more likely to seek out social connections -they tend to turn to others for advice. Current research by Tori Watson is taking this evidence and looking at how adolescents who have imaginary friends as children deal withbullying(欺凌)at school. It is found that teens who remember their imaginary friends are better at dealing with bullying.
While we know a lot about childhood imaginary friends such as Crabby Crab and the positive effects they can have, there is still a lot to learn about imaginary friends.
12. What is Crabby crab?
A. It is a crab Fisher caught inNorway.
B. It is Fisher's imaginary friend.
C. It is a toy Fisher like much.
D. It is a cause of earache.
13. Why do children with imaginary friends have better coping skills?
A. Imaginary friends help improve their adjustment.
B. Having imaginary friends makes them smarter.
C. They have rich imagination.
D. They are no longer alone.
14. What will a child with imaginary friends probably do if he is bullied?
A. Escape from the bully.
B. Fight with the bully bravely.
C. Keep silent about being bullied.
D. Ask a parent or a teacher for help.
15. What is the author's attitude towards the effect of imaginary friends?
A. Concerned.
B. Doubtful.
C. Optimistic.
D. Indifferent.

Eating jellyfish could save endangered fish
According to the IUCN Red List 32,000 species are threatened with extinction — everything from birds and mammals. Despite national and international efforts being gathered to protect threatened species, we actively fish for many of them. For those of us who enjoy the odd fish and chips, this isn't great news,___41.___the researchers have come up with an unusual way we can help while still enjoying seafood — and it involves eating jellyfish.
