In India, one of the most significant festivals is Diwali, which falls between October and November. It's a five-day celebration that includes good food, fireworks, colored sand, and special candles and lamps.
In honor of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, people make special prayers on the first day to obtain blessings for welfare, succcss, and well-being. People welcome the goddess into their homes by decorating entrances with colorful lanterns and traditional designs. In addition, many people treat themselves to fine jewelry, praying for good fortune. Those who cannot afford so much, seek out cheaper items such as clothes or household goods.
The second day of the festival is called Kali Chaudas. For some, the day provides an opportunity to drive away misfortune from homes and businesses. They decorate their homes with clay lamps and create design patterns called rangoli on the floor using colored powder or sand.
The third day is when the biggest celebrations occur, which begin early in the morning with a visit to a temple to seek the blessings of the goddess. As the sun sets, festival observers light up their homes with small lamps and enjoy delicious traditional foods with their loved ones.
The festival's fourth day is celebrated in many different ways. Friends and relatives visit with gifts, sweets and best wishes for the season.
And the final day of the festival is called Bhai Oooj It honors the close bond between brothers and sisters and is observed with traditional ceremonies and more delicious food.
For children in India, Diwali is similar to Christmas. 2.
There are lots of ways to educate yourself on the Internet. You can find photos, documents, and films on almost any topic you can imagine. And at , you can access lectures by artists, scholars, designers, technicians and others.
TED began in 1984 as a conference that brought together individuals from the fields of technology, entertainment and design. It was intended to be a one-time event focusing on technology and design. The event ended up losing money, and it was six years before the
founders tried it again. This time it worked, and since 1990, the TED conference has been an annual event. There are now two held every year, with topics as diverse as music, medicine, and money. Other specialized spin-off conferences address narrower issues.
The TED website came from a desire to share the conferences with the world, to "offer free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers," as the website puts it. The current version of the site was launched in April 2007, and contains videos of talks given at the TED conferences around the world. The talks are transcribed into hundreds of languages.
The TED website is owned by the Sapling Foundation, a non profit devoted to fostering the spread of great ideas. The Sapling foundation acquired TED in 2001. Since then, it has been focusing on using TED to broadcast ideas that might change the world.
TED, of course, isn't immune to criticism. It's been called elitist(精英) for its high ticket prices (more than 6,000 dollars total). It's been accused by a few people of censorship for not publishing their talks. One controversial speaker was upset about being criticized by the conference's host afterward.
The complaints, however, seem to be relatively few for such a large, long-running organization. And accusations of elitism ring hollow when so much is given away for free on TED's website. Whatever its failings, TED is a source of inspirational information for those who seek it out.
(1)What is the main topic of the article?
A.The case against TED
B.What's on TED today.
C.Pros and cons of .
D.What is TED
(2)Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.The TED conference came after the success of .
B.Two TED conferences are now held every year.
C.TED talks are available in many languages.
D.The Sapling Foundation owns .
(3)From the last two paragraphs, we can infer that ________.
A.it is accepted to all involved that some TED talks might not be published
B.the host of the conference is one who plays a supportive role to the speakers
C.TED is criticized for giving special treatment to the wealthy or powerful
D.the negative comments on TED greatly affects its reputation
(4)This author probably believes that________.
A.TED is elitist
B.TED is beneficial
C.TED isn't important
D.TED is the best website
【答案】(1)D
(2)A
(3)C
(4)B

根据第一段中的“And at , you can acce ss lectures by artists, scholars, designers, technicians and others.”

根据第三段中的“The TED website came from a desire to share the conferences with the world, to ‘offer free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers,’ as the website puts it.”TED网站源于一种与世界分享会议的愿望,用网站的话说,就是“向世界上最有灵感的思想家们提供免费的知识”。

根据倒数第二段中的“TED, of course, isn't immune to criticism. It's been called elitist(精英) for its high ticket prices.”

它因其高昂的票价被称为精英主义;以及最后一段中的“And accusations of elitism ring hollow when so much is given away for free on TED's website.”

根据最后一段中的“Whatever its failings, TED is a source of inspirational information for those who seek it out.”

Moscow city authorities have begun using comics (漫画) with characters from Russian fairy tales to explain to migrants (移民) how they should behave. They say a 100-page guide is needed to "keep a positive image" of the city and could help reduce "tensions" between natives and migrants. But critics have pointed out that foreign migrants and natives may be regarded as antagonists in the manual (手册).
Russians and migrants have repeatedly flooded in Moscow recently. Many migrants from ex-Soviet republics in Central Asia, the Caucasus (高加索) and North Caucasus, arrive in Moscow every year, attracted by the capital's job opportunities and relatively high salaries. A significant number of them work in the Russian capital illegally.
The new guide in Russian seeks to explain the "dos" and "don'ts" to migrants. They are urged not to cause trouble, by staring at women, or eating or talking loudly on the streets. They are also warned that the police may routinely (例行公事) stop them to check their documents.
In the manual, Russia's famous "three warriors" are meant to represent the city's law enforcement agencies (执法机关), while Prince Yuri Dolgoruky (a historical character) is used for tours around Moscow. Meanwhile, Vasilisa the Wise and The Snow Maiden test the reader on Russia's language and history. A special section of the book explains the importance of following
Moscow's strict residency and employment rules, stressing that migrants could otherwise be deported (驱逐出境) or banned from entry.
The manual was written primarily for illegal migrants, Alexander Kalinin, who heads the group Support for Working Migrants in Moscow, told BBC Russian.
"We want to raise their level of law awareness," he added.
Migrant characters had initially (最初) been identified as representatives of different nationalities, but the book's authors later decided to drop this idea so as "not to offend anyone",
said Mr. Kalinin.
"The old conflict between Russian heroes and non-Slavic invaders is being revived," Yevgeny Varshaver, a migration expert told BBC Russian. He also suggested that the language used in the book would be "difficult" to understand for some migrants who were not native Russian speakers.(1)The underlined word "antagonists" in Paragraph 1 can probably be replaced by "________".
A. friends
B. acquaintances
C. cooperators
D. opponents
(2)People from other countries come to Moscow "________".
A. to find well-paid jobs
B. to have a new lifestyle
C. to enjoy the fine climate
D. to experience a new culture
(3)The third paragraph is mainly about "________".
A. consequences the migrants may suffer
B. the purpose of publishing the handbook
C. the measures to attract foreign migrants
D. characters and their functions in Russian fairytales
(4)Which of the following would be the best title of the text?
A. Ways to help foreign migrants to settle in Russia
B. Characters from Russian fairy tales have new jobs
C. More and more foreign migrants to work in Moscow
D. Moscow fairy tale comics to help migrants behave

Being attractive isn't usually considered much of a disadvantage in today's world. Actually, there is the endless potential benefit about it, but researchers have found one area that being pretty makes life a challenge securing yourself a boring, low-paying job.
This stands in contrast to a large body of research that attractiveness, in general, helps candidates in the selection process. For the most part good looks is a blessing. We treat pretty people more favorably in general, often vote for them more in elections, and pay them more in their professions. The research suggests that attractive people may be discriminated against in selection for relatively less desirable jobs.
Researchers carried out four experiments involving more than 750 participants, including university students and managers who make hiring decisions in the real world. Participants were shown photos of two potential job candidates, one attractive and the other unattractive. Participants were then asked a series of questions designed to measure their opinions of the job candidates and whether they would hire these candidates for a less-than-desirable job.
The less desirable jobs included a warehouse worker, housekeeper, customer service representative and the more desirable jobs included things like a manager, project director, IT elite(精英). In all experiments where they were asked, participants were significantly less likely to hire the attractive candidate for the less desirable job and more likely to hire the attractive candidate for the more desirable job.
Ms Lee said, "In the selection decision for an undesirable job, decision makers were more likely to choose the unattractive individual over the attractive individual. Co-author Dr Madan Pillutla said, "It is interesting that decision makers consider others' opinions in their decisions. They thought that attractive individuals would want better outcomes, and therefore would be less satisfied, so they favored unattractive candidates when selecting for a less desirable job."
The research also suggests the established view that attractive candidates are favored when applying for jobs might be limited to high-level jobs.
(1)What do people generally think of being attractive?
A. It is a disadvantage.
B. It is a blessing.
C. it is not important.
D. It has nothing to do with jobs.
(2)What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The participants of the experiment.
B. The importance of the experiment.
C. The process of the experiment.
D. The result of the experiment.
(3)An ordinary-looking graduate may have an advantage when applying for _______. A. a manager B. a project director C. a warehouse worker D. an IT elite (4)Why are less attractive applicants preferred for less desirable jobs?
A. Because they are more hardworking.
B. Because they will be more satisfied.
C. Because they have no requirements at all.
D. Because they will want better outcomes.
(5)Which of the following agrees with the research?
A. Attractive people are more fit for high-level jobs.
B. Less attractive people are easy to find high-level jobs.
C. Attractive people can always be hired when applying for jobs.
D. Less attractive people can easily get highly paid if they work hard.
【答案】(1)B
(2)C
(3)C
(4)B

Academic learning is usually in the spotlight at school, but teaching elementary-age students “soft” s kills like self-control and how to get along with others might help to keep at-risk kids out of criminal trouble in the future.
Once a program called Fast Track was started in the early 1990s for more than 7,600 children of 55 schools in America. They were identified by their teachers and parents to be at high risk for developing aggressive behavioral problems. The students were randomly divided into two groups; half took part in the intervention, which included a teacher-led curriculum, parent training groups, academic tutoring and lessons in self-control and social skills. The program, which lasted from first grade through 10th grade, reduced delinquency(少年犯罪), arrests and use of health and mental health services as the students aged through adolescence and young adulthood.
In another latest study, by looking at the data from nearly 900 students in previous findings, researchers found that about a third of the influence on future crime outcomes was due to the social and self-regulation skills the students learned from ages 6 to 11.
The academic skills, or hard skills like learning of physics, which were taught as part of Fast Track, turned out to have less of an influence on crime and delinquency rates than did the soft skills, which are associated with emotional(情绪的) intelligence. Soft skills might include teaching kids to work cooperatively in a group or teaching them how to think about the long-term consequences when they make a decision.
Researchers drew the conclusion that these soft skills should be emphasized even more in our education system and in our system of socializing children. Parents should do all they can to promote these skills with their children as should education policymakers. To the extent we can improve those skills, we can improve outcomes in delinquency.
(1)Fast Track was intended for children who .
A. were randomly chosen from their schools
B. had some problems with academic learning
C. often went against their teachers and parents' wishes
D. were considered to have criminal trouble in the future
(2)What can be learned about "the intervention" in Paragraph 2?
A. It included all the students.
B. It focused on social skills.
C. It improved health services.
D. It had positive outcomes.
(3)Compared with soft skills, hard skills .
A. almost have no influence on students
B. are more affected by students' emotion
C. are mainly related to academic learning
D. offer children greater self-control abilities (4)Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Soft Social Skills Matter
B. Fast Track Helps Children
C. How to Prevent Delinquency
D. What to DO for Education
【答案】(1)D
(2)D
(3)C
(4)A

根据第一段中的“Academic learning is usually in the spotlight at school, but teaching elementary-age students ‘soft’ skills like self-control and how to get along with others might help to keep at-risk kids out of criminal trouble in the future.可知,Fast Track是为那些在未来被认为有犯罪问题的儿童准备的。

故选D。

(2)考查词义猜测。

根据第二段中的“The students were randomly divided into two groups; half took part in the intervention, which included a teacher-led curriculum, parent training groups, academic tutoring and lessons in self-control and social skills. ”学生被随机分为两组;一半的人参与了the intervention,其中包括教师主导的课程、家长培训小组、学术辅导以及自我控制和社交技巧方面的课程。

由此推知划线词的意思是“辅导”,故选D。

(3)考查推理判断。

根据第四段中的“The academic skills, or hard skills like learning of physics, which were taught as part of Fast Track, turned out to have less of an influence on crime and delinquency rates than did the soft skills, which are associated with emotional(情绪的) intelligence.”

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but a good sense. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an
atmosphere of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behavior of politeness is by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don't even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. A typical example is the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in a traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can't even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
(1)The most suitable title for this passage would be __________.
A.Traffic Jams.
B.Good Manners.
C.Road Politeness.
D.Modern Drivers.
(2)Troubles on the road are often caused by __________.
A.traffic jams
B.the behavior of the drivers
C.the great speed of modern life
D.terrible road conditions
(3)According to the writer, a good driver should __________.
A.encourage children to cross the road whenever they want to
B.beat back when forced to face rude driving
C.be able to recognize politeness when he sees it
D.join in a traffic stream quickly however other people feel
(4)t is not always right for drivers to __________.
A.master the roadmanship
B.neglect politeness when they see it
C.give a friendly nod in answer to an act of politeness
D.encourage old ladies to cross the road whenever and wherever they want to
【答案】(1)C
(2)B
(3)C
(4)D

Road politeness is not only good manners, but a good
sense.

根据第一段中的“...but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become f ierce tigers behind the wheel”;以及第二段中的“..., but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving.”

根据第二段中的“Many drivers nowadays don't even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.“可知,现在的很多司机看起来不知道什么才是道路礼节。

根据第三段中的“misplaced politeness can also be dangerous”;以及“The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.”

Over the years, cheerleading has taken two primary forms: game-time cheerleading and competitive cheerleading. Game-time cheerleaders' main goal is to entertain the crowd and lead them with team cheers, which should not be considered a sport. However, competitive cheerleading is more than a form of entertainment. It is really a competitive sport.
Competitive cheerleading includes lots of physical activity. The majority of the teams require a certain level of tumbling (翻腾) ability. It's a very common thing for gymnasts, so it's easy for them to go into competitive cheerleading. Usually these cheerleaders integrate lots of their gymnastics experience including their jumps, tumbling, and overall energy. They also perform lifts and throws. This is where the "fliers" are thrown in the air, held by "bases" in different positions that require strength and working with other teammates.
Competitive cheerleading is also an activity that is governed by rules under which a winner can be declared. It is awarded points for technique, creativity and sharpness. Usually the more difficult the action is, the better the score is. That's why cheerleaders are trying to experience great difficulty in their performance.
Besides, there is also a strict rule of time. The whole performance has to be completed in less than three minutes and fifteen seconds, during which the cheerleaders are required to stay
within a certain area. Any performance beyond the limit of time is invalid.
Another reason for the fact that competitive cheerleading is one of the hardest sports is that it has more reported injuries. According to some research, competitive cheerleading is the number one cause of serious sports injuries to women. Emergency room visits for it are five times the number than for any other sport, partially because cheerleaders don't use protective equipment. Smiling cheerleaders are thrown into the air and move down into the arms of the teammates, which may easily cause injuries. Generally, these injuries affect all areas of the body, including wrists, shoulders, ankles, head, and neck.
There can be no doubt that competitive cheerleading is a sport with professional skills. Hopefully, it will appear in the Olympics since cheerleaders are just as athletic and physically fit as those involved in the more accepted sports. It should be noted that it is a team sport and even the smallest mistake made by one teammate can bring the score of the entire team down. So without working together to achieve the goal, first place is out of reach.
(1)What is the main purpose of competitive cheerleading?
A. To compare skills of participants.
B. To make the audience feel amused.
C. To attract more people to watch events.
D. To cheer up the competitors on the court.(2)The underlined word "integrate" in Paragraph 2 probably means "________".
A. examine
B. combine
C. identify
D. replace
(3)We can learn from the passage that competitive cheerleading ________.
A. lacks necessary guidelines to follow
B. enjoys greater popularity than other sports
C. requires more designed actions than gymnastics
D. has a relatively high rate of damage to the body
(4)Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
I: Introduction P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: Conclusion
A. B. C. D.
【答案】(1)A
(2)B。
