One evening last summer, when I asked my 17-year-old son, Ray, for help with dinner, his response surprised me, “What’s a colander(漏勺)?” he asked.
I could only blame myself. Nobody’s hands went in the sauce except my own. But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for.
I felt confident that I’d raised a self-reliant boy, as we all try to do. But could he boil water? Sew on a button? Wash his clothes without turning them pink? No, no and no. Suddenly it hit me: He’d be leaving the house in a year to attend college. No way was I going to set a spoiled prince into the world.
As parents, while we focus on our child’s confidence and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we
are also raising someone’s future roommate, boyfriend, husband, or father. I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life, “What’s for dinner?” So I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course. I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no.
For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for toasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust(馅饼皮)and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven.
Three of my four grandparents were tailors, so Ray was genetically programmed to quickly master the basics, like mending a split seam or refastening a button. One day we covered Advanced Laundry, in which I taught him never to mix a red sweatshirt with white shirts or put sweaters in the dryer. I knew that he would rather have been shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother -- he tried to beg off sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive -- but it couldn’t be denied that he was learning, and more than just housekeeping. “I appreciate more what you do as a mom,” he told me one day.
Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more important, he realizes there’s nothing masculine (男子气的)about being helpless. Not only can he make his own dinner, he can make it for his family, too. That’s what I call a man.
24. Hearing her son’s question, the author felt _______.
A. shocked
B. angry
C. disappointed
D. calm
25. We can learn from the text that Ray ________.
A. made great progress in cooking
B. preferred sewing to cooking
C. was unwilling to take the course at first
D. always thought it attractive to do housework
26. The underlined part “more than just housekeeping” shows that Ray _______.
A. fell in love with housework
B. did other work in the house
C. acknowledges the author’s efforts
D. began to be more independent
27. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Are Women Programmed for Housework?
B. Should Boys Be Involved in Housework?
C. I’m Proud I’ve Raised a Curious Son
D. A Present for My Future Daughter-in-law

There are many programs for high school students today that help isolated teenagers cope with loneliness. However, loneliness is not only an issue for teens but also an important and rarely acknowledged one in the elderly.
In Britain,Tracey Crouch was appointed to be the first Minister of Loneliness in order to address the issues caused by loneliness. This is the first time such a position has been created.
In Britain, there are around 9 million people who say they are lonely frequently. In Germany,a study conducted by Ruhr University Bochum found that 20 percent of people over the age of 85 felt lonely, and 14 percent of those between age 45 and 65 felt socially isolated. In the United States, more than 25 percent of the population lives alone, more than 50 percent are unmarried.
Isolation is generally associated with cardiovascular disease, depression, obesity, and anxiety.Additionally, the stress from loneliness can cause your cells to change on a molecular(分子)level that reduces its abilities to defend your body against diseases. In fact, doctors believe having feelings of loneliness is equivalent to smoking
15 cigarettes per day in regard to its impact on health!
In Britain, the new Minister of Loneliness will help establish government policies on the issue and fund charities to devote their efforts towards aiding loneliness. There are charities that link lonely seniors to high school students in order to give them a line of communication whenever they feel lonely!
The possibilities for the new Minister of Loneliness are endless. For example, she can provide education services to household businesses so that they can identify lonely customers if they see one.Loneliness fits into the category of being a social issue that must be monitored by the entire community in order to help those in need.Hence, government involvement in medical services and care for seniors and others is essential for happy seniors.

A portrait created by artificial intelligence(AI)made a historic appearance on the auction(拍卖)block at Christie’s in New York City this week.It is the first artwork created by an algorithm(算法)to be offered for auction in the world of fine art.
The strange-looking pai nting of an imaginary man in a dark long dress left the auction block at Christie’s for $432,500 on Oct.25 in New York City.
The portrait—designed in the“Old Master”style of European fine artists from centuries ago—only partially fills the canvas(画布),leaving empty space around the central figure. It appears to represent a man with an unclear face, dressed in clothing similar to that worn by subjects painted by the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn in the 17th century.
Of course,a computer didn’t pick up a brush and become an artist. The AI that generated(生成)the image had human programmers—a Parisian art team called Obvious. To generate the portrait, titled“Portrait of Edmond
De Belamy”,the Obvious team first fed the neural network a diet of 15,000 images painted between the 14th and 20th centuries,to train it to recognize visual elements in fine art,Obvious artist Hugo Caselles—Dupré told Christie’s.The algorithm that eventually created an original image had two parts that worked against each other, called the Generator and the Discriminator.
“The Generator makes a new image based on the set,and then the Discriminator tries to spot the difference between a human-made image and one created by the Generator. The aim is to fool the Discriminator into thinking that the new images are real—life portraits. Then,we have a result,”he told Christie’s.GAN’s final image was then inkjet—printed on canvas and framed, according to Obvious. At the bottom of the portrait is a mathematical formula(公式)representing the algorithm that created it,Obvious artists wrote on the team’s website.
The goal of the painting and of Obvious, also co-founded by Hugo Caselles-Dupré and Gauthier Vernier, was to prove“artificial intelligence can do more than operate driverless cars or transform industry—it can be creative,”CNBC reported.
32.What does the author think of the portrait?
A.It might frightened away the visitors.
B.It was a breakthrough in history.
C.It was well received by all the artists.
D.It is a masterpiece painted by Christie.
33.How does the portrait look?
A.It is painted with some empty space.
B.The figure wears a strange expression.
C.It is in the style of European fine artists of the time.
D.The figure is dressed in the same way as the Dutch artist.
34.What did the artists do to generate the portrait?
A.They invested $432,500 to buy paintings.
B.They taught the network to learn painting.
C.They worked with the Generator to paint 1 5000 paintings.
D.They input a large number of paintings into the computer.
35.The Obvious team created the portrait to show artificial intelligence can_______.
A.replace human beings
B.be applied in many fields
C.operate driverless cars
D.be better than human beings

M: No, I wouldn’t move into a flat if I were you. You won’t get much studying done in a flat. You’ll spend h alf your time cooking and cleaning!

W: I’ve seen a list of plays that are being performed this week, and I’d like to know which are suitable for my children, and which ones my husband and I might go to.
M: How old are your children?
W: Five and seven.
M: What about The Mystery of Muldoon? That’s aimed at five to ten-year-olds.
W: So if I take my children, I can expect them to enjoy it more than I do?
M: I think so. If you’d like something for yourself and your husband you might like to see Fire and Flood. It’s about events that really happened in Stretton two hundred years ago,and children might find it rather frightening. W: Oh, thanks for the warning. And finally, what about Silly Sailor?
M: That’s a comedy, and it’s for young and old. In fac t, it won an award in the Stretton Drama Festival a couple of months ago.
W: OK. Well, goodbye, and thanks for all the information. I’m looking forward to the festival!
M: Goodbye.

M: No, no. I was just watching TV.
W: Oh, good. Have you had a good weekend?
M: Yeah. It’s been good. I went to the cinema with some friends yesterday. What about you?
W: Not too bad. Hey, actually,I am calling because it’s David’s birthday this Saturday. I was wondering if you and Shirley would come.
M: That sounds good. What time?
W: It’s 7 o’clock, OK? David won’t finish work until 6:30.。
