AThe Key to Your HealthA car needs gas to run and your body also needs food to work for you. Eating the right kind of food is very important. But you will find yourself tired in these days and you can not think quickly.Watching what you eat will help your body remain healthy and strong. It is also good to take some exercise. She replied, “I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!”We became friends quickly. At the end of the term I invited Rose to make a speech to our football team. I'll never forget what she taught us. She said, “There are some secrets of staying young and being happy. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You must have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you will die. There is a huge difference between growing old and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't need any talent or ability. To grow up, you must always find the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The people who are afraid of death are those with regrets.”At the end of the year, Rose finished her college. One week after graduation, Rose died peacefully in her sleep. We would always remember the great woman.5.From the passage, we can learn that Rose ________.A.went to college at an old ageB.became a professor laterC.once worked in a hospitalD.died before college graduation6.At the end of the term the writer invited Rose to ________.A.go to a party B.play footballC.make a speech D.write a book7.The underlined word“talent”in the third paragraph means “________” in Chinese.A.训练B.方法C.途径D.才能8.What is the best title of the passage?A.Laughing every dayB.Never too old to learnC.Growing old and growing upD.How to stay young and being happyCThe Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of September 2, 1666. In four days it destroyed more than threequarters of the old city, where most of the houses were made of wood and close together. Over one hundred people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives. The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the King's baker (面包师) in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window into the roof. A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.By eight o'clock three hundred houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the River Thames. Tuesday was the worst day. The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St Paul's and the Guildhall among them.Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire, “People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat.”The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out. After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect (建筑师), wanted a city with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. In fact, the streets are still narrow, but he did build more than fifty churches, among them the new St Paul's.The fire caused great pain and loss, but after it London was a better place: a city for the future and not just of the past.9.It seems that the writer of the text was most sorry for the fact that ________.A.some people lost their livesB.the birds in the sky were killed by the fireC.many famous buildings were destroyedD.the King's bakery was burned down10.Why did the writer cite (引用) Samuel Pepys?A.To give the reader a clearer picture of the fire.B.Because Pepys also wrote about the fire.C.To show that poor people suffered most.D.Because Pepys was among those putting out the fire.11.How was the fire put out according to the text?A.The King and his soldiers came to help.B.All the houses made of wood in the city were destroyed.C.People managed to get enough water from the river.D.Houses standing in the direction of the fire were pulled down.DDo you know what Street Sense is? It's a newspaper in Washington D.C. about homeless people and problems that affect them. Homeless, or formerly homeless, Washingtonians write many of the articles. The newspaper's business model is based on homeless sellers who sell the newspaper. You can hear them call out “Street Sense for sale!”near subway entrances, lunch places and other areas around the city. The Street Sense newspaper is housed in an office in a Christian church in Washington. Every other Wednesday about fourteen thousand copies are printed. The newspaper expresses the thoughts and experiences of people who call the streets home.Four staff members work at Street Sense, and two of them are paid. The staff members write the first two pages of the paper. Interns —students working as part of their studies —and volunteers help. Homeless writers provide the rest of the material. This includes poems, stories and essays.Street Sense provides training for the homeless people who want to become part of the sales team. After the training, each student is given ten free copies of Street Sense. Once those are sold, trainees become real salespeople. They buy papers for thirtyfive cents each and sell them for a dollar.Lisa Gillespie is the managing editor of Street Sense. She says the newspaper plays a part in homeless people's lives that other media cannot. With the help of the newspaper, a lot of homeless people have become confident again, and their lives have also been improved a lot.12.What does the writer mainly tell us in Paragraph 1?A.Something about the Street Sense.B.Homeless people in Washington D.C.C.How Street Sense solves homeless people's problems.D. Even though most countries have a system for recognizing, honoring and rewarding people who have done something good in their countries, there are now hundreds of awards and awards ceremonies for all kinds of things・The Oscars are probably the most famous, a time for the film industry to tell itself how good it is. The awards are not only for films 一Now there are also Grammies, Brits, the Mercury Prize and the MTV and Q awards for music .In Britain, a writer who wins the Booker prize can expect to see their difficult, literary novel hit the bestseller lists and compete with The Da Vinci Code for popularity. The Turner Prize is an award for a British contemporary artist — each year it causes controversy by apparently giving lots of money to artists who do things like displaying their beds, putting animals in glass cases or 一this year 一building a garden shed・Awards don't only exist for the arts. There are now awards for Sports Personality of the Year, for European Footballer of the Year and World Footballer of the Year. This seems very strange —sometimes awards can be good to give recognition to people who deserve it, or to help people who are on tight budget carry on their work without worrying about finances, but professional soccer players these days “re not shy of fund! Why have all these awards and ceremonies appeared recently? Shakespeare never won a prize, nor did Leonardo Da Vinci. Most awards ceremonies are now sponsored by big organizations or companies. This means that not only the person who wins the award benefits from it 一but also the sponsors. The MTV awards, for example, are great for publicizing not only music, but also MTV itself! On the surface, it seems to be a "wimwirf' situation, with everyone being happy, but let me ask you a question — how far do you think that publicity and marketing are winning here, and how much genuine recognition of achievement is taking place?5.What's the writer's attitude towards the Nobel Prize?A.Critical.B. Doubtful.C. Positive.D. However, since 2011, researchers from Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town have been observing a new phenomenon off the coast of South Africa. Professor Ken Findlay and his team reported seeing 22 cases of large groups of humpback whales on three different occasions in 2011,2014, and 2015.The researchers are puzzled not just by the unusual social behavior, but also by the fact that the U super-groups^ were seen in April and May. That's because the mammals typically spend these late summer months (in the Southern Hemisphere) feeding in the Antarctic waters before heading back to the warmer subtropical South African waters during winter, to breed and give birth. In a study published in the journal PLOS ONE on May 1, Findlay and his team outlined some of the possible reasons behind the big change in the mammals9 behavior. The researchers say that the cause of the recent sightings could be the abundant food available in the Benguela upwelling system. Located near the southwestern tip of South Africa between St. Helena Bay and Cape Point, the system of cold, nutrient-rich ocean cuiTents is rich in phytoplanktons and species of small fish that the humpback whales feed on, such as the mantis shrimp ・Another probable reason is the sudden increase in humpback whales' population. According to a recent scientific report, the mammals, population, off the coast of Australia, has reached nearly 90 perceni of pre-whaling numbers, while on the US East Coast, the number of whales is up 60 percent from its lows. All in all, experts estimate there are currently 150,000 humpback whales swimming in our oceans- They all need to feed・However, while the theories may explain the decision to skip migrating (迁徙)to Antarctic waters, the reason for the social super-groups remains a mystery. According to Findley, "It's possible that the behavior was occurring, but just not where it was visible (看得见的).Because there were so few of them, we may not have seen it:9・ What is implied about the humpback whales in Paragraph 2?A.They no longer hunt for food in the Antarctic waters・B.They usually spend the whole winter in the Antarctic waters・C.They are rarely seen in South African waters during April and May.D.They^ve changed their social behavior to adjust to the warmer waters・10. According to Findley, why are the humpback whales seen in large groups now?A.Because they swim in populated areas now・B.Because their number has increased greatly.C.Because they need to work together to hunt for food.D.Because researchers pay closer attention to them now.11 • What does the passag e mainly talk about?A.Reasons for the number of humpback whales increasing so greatly.B.How humpback whales adapt themselves to the changing environment.C.Why humpback whales appear off the coast of South Africa in large groups. D・ Researchers'findings about a new whale species near the coast of South Africa. DLast Tuesday morning I stared across the table at a woman with severe scars lining her face・ Her angry husband carved those scars when she told him she wanted a divorce.Fm a member of the Rhode Island Parole Board. Month after month — for 13 years — Fve met with criminals and victims. Immediately before my colleagues and I conduct hearings for the criminals, we meet with their victims if they wish to tell us their stories.Every time I walk into those hearing rooms I retest my belief in justice・ I do my best to balance my concern for public safety and my faith that some criminals truly have regretted their deeds・ On hearing days, nearly always, the victims beg us to keep the prisoners behind bars. All morning long I hear their sufferings: murder, armed robbery, and domestic violence. The victims return to their lives and hours later I find myself face to face with the criminals. I settle in to hear what the prisoners have to say. Often their stories are filled with regret, hope and lots of promises. These face-to-face meetings force me to deal with what I really believe about peopled fundamental rights. Fm proud to be part of a system like ours 一as imperfect as it is. The system does most of its work in the open and takes seriously the rights of both victims and the accused But I struggle to balance these colliding rights. Only an hour after meeting with the woman with scars on her face, I met with her husband, Andrew・ He explained with sorrow and regret how he had mishandled his failing marriage・ He showed me, with heartfelt words, the fruits of his hard emotional labor while in prison 一from his learning in treatment programs and from his own soul-searching. All of a sudden, he didn't seem evil・So, how do I administer justice (执行审判)?1 believe that justice cant be shaped by, simplistic formulas (公式).Rather, justice happens when real human beings sort through a jumble of laws, rules, conflicting stories, and plain old instinct (木能,直觉)12.When staying in the hearing room, the author __________ .A.is full of contradictory feelingsB.feels pitiful for the criminalsC.feels suspicious about the justiceD.is angry at the victims' sufferings13.What's most probably the author's job?A.To decide whether to put the criminals into prison.B.To decide whether to let the criminals come out of prison.C.To give justice to the victims and punishment to the criminals.D.To give justice to the victims and lessen punishment to the criminals.14.What can we know about Andrew?A.He accepted physical labor and treatment programs in the prison.B.He was less evil than he used to be after years of soul-searching・C.He was very mad with his wife about ending marriage with him.D.He was sentenced to 13 years in prison for his violence to his wife・15.What's the author's attitude to the criminals?A.They are able to reform themselves in prison.B.Their rights and freedom also need to be defended・C.The victims should forgive the regretful criminals.D.They should be given punishment and also justice.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

She thought Bobby had made a new dog friend. It seemed very friendly and got well along with Bobby. They would run after each other, play on the pool cover, gently wrestle or nap side by side.At first she thought it was a wild dog. But when she posted a photo of the two playing on her Facebook, a pet rescue center called her. The group told her the Atlanta Wolf Project had been trying to catch the wolf for months, but they failed. Prior gave them new hope.Because of the wolf's friendship with her pet dog, it was likely to come back to her backyard. Researchers hoped Prior could help them. When they put some traps (陷阱) in the back of her yard, Prior got a very complicated feeling. She couldn't describe what it was, but she was closely surrounded by it. The wolf would be in a safe place, but she would do something that harmed Bobby's feelings.Researchers told Prior that they would take the rare, black wolf to the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary where it would live with another wolf. They didn't think it a fulfillingsituation for a wild animal like a wolf to be connecting with humans' life. They need to keep a natural awareness to humans and pets and keep to themselves.Wolf experts added they would look into the genetics (遗传学) of the animal to try to learn why it liked to get close to people and tried to play with their pets. Some experts believe it could have a history with well-meaning humans. Prior had not expected that they should meet such a special and lovely wolf. She and Bobby just hoped the dear friend all the best.4.What happened to Vanessa Prior according to the first two paragraphs?A.She was worried about her dog's safety.B.She was awarded for her meaningful picture.C.She realized her dog made friends with a wolf.D.She learnt a lot of knowledge of wolves from researchers.5.How did Prior respond when some traps were set?A.She was afraid to lose Bobby.B.She regretted helping the researchers.C.She was worried about the wolf's future.D.She had bittersweet feelings about the wolf.6.What does the underlined word "fulfilling" in Paragraph 4 mean?A.Changeable.B.Satisfying.C.Strange.D.Worrying.7.What can be inferred about the black wolf from the last two paragraphs?A.It is a kind and sociable animal.B.It was once kept as a human pet.C.It will stay with Bobby for some time.D.It will be sent to the wild to live with other animals.阅读理解Most parents are worried the first time they catch their kids out in a lie. According to child and teen psychiatrist Gayani DeSilva, lying can actually be a sign of healthy development in young children. "Kids lie for many reasons, and much of it is normal," DeSilva says. "People are not born with the knowledge of communicating with others and getting their needs met. They'll experiment with different communication styles and techniques until they find the ones that work best for them. Lying is one of those techniques."As kids get older, they become more aware of how their actions affect others, and many will lie less frequently. In spite of this, parents still need to Lead their kids to form a habit of not lying. According to DeSilva, when children lie, look at them directly and ask what they need. After they tell you, gently remind them that telling you directly will be more effective than lying. It's also a good idea to model the behavior you want to see in your kids. In other words, don't lie to your children. This will set you and your children on a course of open communication and trust. In some cases, lying is a sign of a deeper issue. A child who is neglected will lie more than a child who has attentive and responsive parents. He's not sure whether he's loved. He may lie to please others. The same goes for a child who has experienced something unpleasant. He may lie to try to hide his shame, avoid admitting his needs, or to control his surroundings to ensure his safety.By paying attention to the reasons behind a lie, parents can figure out what need to be done. For example, while Jack might lie about completing his homework in order to play video games, he also might be trying to avoid negative feelings connected with school work, and this is just where parents should start, says therapist Gideon Javna.8.What can be inferred about lying from DeSilva's words?A.It has certain benefits for the healthy growth of kids.B.It shows the understanding between kids and parents.C.It can be an effective means of communication for kids.D.It is so common for kids that parents can completely ignore it.9.How can parents get their children to tell the truth?A.By pretending to trust them at first.B.By encouraging them to admit their needs.C.By telling them directly the harm of lying.D.By punishing them for their lying in a safe way.10.The author mentioned the two kids in Paragraph 3 to show _____________.A.It's common for children to lieB.It's important to be a generous parentC.lying can damage family relationshipsD.lying is a reflection of one's mental trouble11.What should Jack's parents do according to Javna?A.Ask him to avoid playing video games:B.Turn his attention to other positive things.C.Give him a second chance to finish homework.D.Listen to and help solve his problem related to school work.阅读理解When your boss calls and tells you to send $100,000 to a supplier, be on your toes. It could be a fake call. As if fake emails weren't enough, on the rise now is the deep fake audio (虚假音频) that can be cloned to sound almost real and perfect and is easy to create. "It's on the rise, and something to watch out for," says Vijay Balasubramaniyan, the CEO of a company called Pindrop.Balasubramaniyan stated during a safety meeting how easy it is to use machine to create sentences that a person probably never said from recorded words. "All you need is five minutes of audio, and you can create fake audio," says Balasubramaniyan. Then, he showed a database (数据库) of voices, typed a sentence, and connected it to a famous people's name on the list. A few seconds later, he clicked "play", and it sounded quite real.More costly are fake phone calls, where cheaters are able to fake the phone number of real contacts andmake calls that result in workers sending off lots of money. He mentioned the example of a United Kingdom energy company in 2019 that got attacked by deep fake audio in a call that asked a worker to send $243,000 to a supplier. Reported by the Wall Street Journal, the worker was directed to pay it within an hour.Balasubramaniyan says if you were to get that kind of call from a "boss" be doubtful and ask to call back right away to prove authenticity (真实性). Besides this, in his opinion, companies need to use more safety measures for keeping up with deep fake artificial intelligence (AI) that produces phone calls and software to check authenticity versus fake calls. "This is a threat that's waiting to happen," he says. "It's a very small number now, but it's very real."12.Why does the author say "be on your toes" in the first paragraph?A.To warn people to be careful.B.To ask people to obey the order.C.To tell people to make an excuse.D.To advise people to put off the deal.13.How is fake audio usually made according to Paragraph 2?A.By attacking the Internet.B.By copying some old audio.C.By recording people's voices.D.By building sentences from a voice database.14.Why is the example of a United Kingdom energy company mentioned?A.To show the terrible result of fake audio.B.To point out the company's safety problems.C.To explain the Internet support of fake audio.D.To study the communication methods of the company.15.What does Balasubramaniyan tell us in the last paragraph?A.How to make better use of AI.B.How to protect workers from fake audio.C.How to collect workers' personal information.D.How to carry out effective business exchanges.二、任务型阅读阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

AAstronauts in the space stations for long missions often work very long days. Tasks are scheduled(安排)so tightly that break times are often used to finish the day's work. It's especially hard for long missions on the International Space Station (ISS). ISS crew members usually live in space for at least a quarter of a year. They work five days on and two days off to mimic the normal way they do things on Earth as much as possible. Weekends give the crew valuable time to rest and do a few hours of housework. They can communicate with family and friends by email, Internet phone and through private video meetings. While astronauts cannot go to a baseball game or a movie in space, there are many familiar activities that they can still enjoy. Before a mission, the family and friends of each ISS crew member put together a collection of family photos, messages, videos and reading materials forthe astronauts to look at when they will be floating 370 kilometers above the Earths During their mission, the crew also receives care packages with CDs, books, magazines, photos and letters. Today, the Internet can be used on the ISS, giving astronauts the chance to do some “web surfing” in their personal time. Besides relaxing with these more common entertainments, astronauts can simply enjoy the experience of living in space. Many astronauts say that one of the most relaxing things to do in space is to look out of the window and stare at the universe and the Earth's vast land mass and oceans.1. What does the word "mimic" in Paragraph 1 probably meanA. FindB. Copy.C. Change.D. Lose.2. In the last paragraph, the author shows that astronauts .A. get more pleasure in space than on the EarthB. find living in space a bit boring and tiringC. regard space life as commonD. love to see the Earth from space3. The passage mainly discusses how astronauts .A. work for longer missions in spaceB. connect with people on the EarthC. observe the Earth from spaceD. spend their free time in spaceBI love training with my husband Chris. We do our own exercises separately, but then we really enjoy spending 30-40 minutes doing something we both like together. I also train with my family—my brother, his wife and our cousins will come to our house regularly to train together. It's like family fun time! Typically, a little bit of competition also makes us work out harder.Laziness, as you know, is contagious. But so is enthusiasm. If you can get your partner on board, you will be able to encourage each other on those days when the other doesn't feel like moving. If you set yourself a challenge and add competition to the mix, I promise you that the training will be much more enjoyable. Time will fly by and you'll want to do it again. This is why I wanted to learn Chris' favourite sport—surfing. Not only would we have more things to do together, but it would be a great challenge for me. In turn, I have introduced Chris to two of my favourite activities: horse riding and motorbiking. Now he also loves them, which means we have even more chances to have fun together. Encouraged by our example, my brother and his wife now train together too. This is what it's all about at the end of the day: quality time with your partner. What if you don't have a partner Well, I assume that you are sure to have a friend who would love to train with you. Or, if you have youngchildren, why not train in the backyard with another parent while they are playing You just need some music. The important thing is to have a plan and to make the time to do it. It will be much more enjoyable than doing it on your own.1. How does the author train with her husbandA. They train on a daily basis.B. They start with separate training.C. They train for half an hour each time.D. They always try to do the same exercise.2. What happens when the author trains with the familyA. Everyone gets more active.B. Everyone relaxes after work.C. His job filled his day, his thought and his life. While he woke up and took a warm shower, I screamed under a freezing waterfall in Peru. While he tied a tie and put on the same Swiss watch, I rowed a boat across Lake of the Ozarks. My father saw me drifting aimlessly, nothing to show for my 33 years but a passport full of funny stamps. He wanted me to settle down, but now I want him to find an adventure. He agreed to travel with me through some national parks. We met four weeks later in Rapid City."What is our first stop " asked my father."What time is it ""Still don't have a watch "Less than an hour away was Mount Rushmore. As he stared up at the four Presidents carved in granite(花岗岩), his mouth and eyes opened slowly, like those of a little boy."Unbelievable," he said, "how was this done "A film in the information centre showed sculptor Gutzon Borglum devoted 14 years to this sculpture and then left the final touches to his son.We stared up and I asked "Would I ever devote my life to anything "No directions, no goals. I always used to hear those words in my father'svoice. Now I hear them in my own.The next day we were at Yellowstone National Park, where we had a picnic."Did you ever travel with your dad " I asked."Only once," he said. "I never spoke much with my father. We loved each other—but never said it. Whatever he could give me, he gave."The last sentence—it's probably the same thing I'd say about my father—is what I'd want my child to say about me.In Glacier National Park, my father said, "I've never seen water so blue." I have, in several places of the world. I can keep travelling, I realize—and maybe a regular job won't be as dull as I feared.Weeks after our trip, I called my father."The photos from the trip are wonderful," he said. "We have got to take another trip like that sometime."I told him I had decided to settle down, and I'm wearing a watch.1. What can we learn about the father from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3A. Flowers!" Kristine cried. The group rushed towards the holiday plants. "You can't eat flowers." 一It was wiser to use any extra money to buy something that could be turned into meals."But Mrs. Sherlock," came the begging voice. "We want flowers." " The children agreed. An organization had given us the name and address of a needy grandmother who had lived alone for many years. We finally pulled up in front of a small house. A slightly-built woman with a weary face came to the door to welcome us.My little group ran to get the foods. As each box was carried in, the old woman kept on saying "Thanks."—much to her visitors' pleasure. When Amy put the mums on the counter, the woman seemed surprised. She's wishing it was a hag of rice, I thought. We returned to the car. As we fastened our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window. The woman inside waved goodbye, then turned and walked acrossthe room, past the turkey, past the goods, straight to the mums. She put her face in them.
