Signification is the sense of the sign which is the thing or idea the sign refers to, while signal is the form, in most cases the written words. The two are respectively called „signified‟ and „signifier‟ later by Saussure‟s followers, for example Roland Barthes (1999). Signifier may be regarded as the linguistic form of language, and signified the content.



Combinations based on sequentiality may be called syntagmas… In its place in a syntagma, any unit acquires its value simply in opposition to what precedes, or to what follows, or to both.” (Saussure, 1972, 2001:121) To put it simple, syntagmatic relation is the relation among words in sentence, it is word order. Syntagmatic relation makes the word meaningful in a particular context. Syntagmatic relation is the organizing principle of text. Without syntagmatic relation, there is no text. Without syntagmatic relation, words can only exist in isolation.

One thing must be born in mind is that arbitrariness of language is not absolute concept. There are exceptional cases such as onomatopoetic words, exclamations and pictographic characters etc. which are motivated in one way or another. Saussure himself also realized later that “two objections may be mentioned which might be brought against the principle that linguistic signs are arbitrary.” He listed two exceptional examples, namely onomatopoetic words and exclamations, but ignored pictographic characters.

“ In our terminology a sign is the combination of a concept and a sound pattern. But in current usage the term sign generally refers to the sound pattern alone, e.g. the word form arbor …the ambiguity would be removed if the three notions in question were designated by terms which are related but contrast. We propose to keep the term sign to designate the whole, but to replace concept and sound pattern respectively by signification and signal. The latter terms have the advantage of indicating the distinction which separates each from the other and both from the whole of which they are part.”(1972, 2001:67)


Saussure points out that outside the context of discourse, words having something in common are associated together in the memory. Words are stored in memory in groups in this way, with the members of the groups being related in various ways. For example, the word enseignement („teaching‟) will automatically evoke a host of other words: enseigner („to teach‟), rensergner („to inform‟) etc. This kind of connexion between words is of quite a different order. It is not based on linear sequence. It is a connexion in the brain. Such connexions are part of that accumulated store which is the form the language takes in an individual‟s brain. We shall call these associative relations.(Saussure, 1972, 2001: 122)


3.1.4 Syntagmatic and associative relations Saussure points out that in a linguistic state, everything depends on relations ( 1972, 2001:121). To describe the structure of language, Sausssure distinguishes two relations of signs, namely, syntagmatic relation and associative relation. Associative relation is also known as paradigmatic relation. These two relations describe language along a horizontal (syntagmatic) axis and a vertical (associative) axis.
Second principle: linearity

Saussure‟s second principle of sign is linear character of the signal. He asserts: The linguistic signal, being auditory in nature, has a temporal aspect, and hence certain temporal characteristics: (a) it occupies a certain temporal space, and (b) this space is measured in just one dimension: it is a line. (1972, 2001:70)

Key concepts in semiotic theory of Saussure 3.1.1 Sign: signifier and signified

A linguistic sign is not a link between a thing and a name, but between a concept and a sound pattern. The sound pattern is not actually a sound; for a sound is something physical. A sound pattern is the hearer‟s psychological impression of a sound, as given to him by the evidence of his senses. This sound pattern may be called a „material‟ element only in that it is the representation of our sensory impressions. The sound pattern may thus be distinguished from the other element associated with it in a linguistic sign. This other element is generally of a more abstract kind: the concept. (1972, 2001:66)

According to the distinction between the signified and signifier, the translator actually transmits the signified rather than signifier. Because in many cases the signifier itself may indicate a kind of meaning for instance in poetry, if an equivalent signifier can be found in the TL, the translator should keep the signifier while focusing on expressing of the signified.
3.1.2 First principle: arbitrariness

He illustrates the arbitrary relationship between the two with examples: There is no internal connexion, for example, between the idea „sister‟ and the French sequence of sounds s-Ö-r which acts as its signal. The same idea might as well be represented by any other sequence of sounds. This is demonstrated by differences between languages, and even by the existence of different languages. The signification „ox‟ has as its signal b- Ö-f on one side of the frontier, but o-k-s (Ochs) on the other side. (Saussure 1972, 2001:68)
