New propulsion systems, fuels, designs, and means of manufacturing cars have all developed rapidly in the past decade. For example, by using the satellite-aided global positioning system (GPS), a computer in the automobile can locate the vehicle's precise position, and with the application of sensors, smart cars can eliminate most car accidents.。

8 As a satellite passes overhead, it sends out a radio signal that can be detected by a receiver in a car's computer. The car's computer can then calculate how far the satellite is by measuring how long it took for the signal to arrive. Since the speed of light is well known, any delay in receiving the satellite's signal can be converted into a distance.

7 Two of the most frustrating things about driving a car are getting lost and getting stuck in traffic. While the computer revolution is unlikely to cure these problems, it will have a positive impact. Sensors in your car tuned to radio signals from orbiting satellites can locate your car precisely at any moment and warn of traffic jams. We already have twenty-four Navstar satellites orbiting the earth, making up what is called the Global Positioning System. They make it possible to determine your location on the earth to within about a hundred feet. At any given time, there are several GPS satellites orbiting overhead at a distance of about 11,000 miles. Each satellite contains four "atomic clocks," which vibrate at a precise frequency, according to the laws of the quantum theory.
review & exercise 2
Summary
GPS and “telematics” make it possible to build smart highways by mounting computer chips, sensors, and radio transmitters on highways to alert cars to traffic jams and obstructions. When telematics is incorporated into highways, this could prove to be an environmental boon , saving fuel, reducing traffic jams, decreasing air pollution, and serving as an alternative to highway expansion.

In today's world, technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate, and the automotive industry is no exception. Smart cars, a product of this technological revolution, are slowly but surely transforming the landscape of transportation. These cars, equipped with advanced sensors, high-tech computer systems, and internet connectivity, are not just vehicles that take us from one place to another; they are intelligent companions that make driving safer, more efficient, and more convenient. The integration of smart technology in cars has led to the development of features such as autonomous driving, collision avoidance systems, and intelligent traffic management. Autonomous driving, in particular, has the potential to revolutionize the way we travel. By using a combination of sensors, radar, and cameras, these cars can navigate roads independently, reducing the risk of accidents and traffic congestion.Collision avoidance systems are another important aspect of smart cars. These systems use radar and sensors to detect obstacles in the car's path and automaticallyadjust the car's speed or direction to avoid collisions. This technology not only reduces the chances of accidents but also improves the overall safety of road users.Intelligent traffic management is another area where smart cars can make a significant impact. By connecting to a central server, these cars can share real-time traffic information, allowing traffic managers to make informed decisions about routing and flow control. This not only reduces traffic congestion but also saves time and fuel for drivers. The integration of smart technology in cars also leads to improved energy efficiency. Many smart cars are now equipped with hybrid or electric engines that consume less fuel and emit lower levels of greenhouse gases. This not only helps in reducing the carbon footprint of the automotive industry but also contributes to the global effort to combat climate change. Moreover, smart cars provide a seamless driving experience for users. They can be integrated with smartphones and other devices, allowing drivers to access their favorite music, podcasts, or navigation apps while onthe road. This not only enhances the driving experience but also makes it more enjoyable. However, the integration of smart technology in cars also raises concerns about privacy and security. As these cars become more connected, they become more vulnerable to cyber attacks and data breaches. It is, therefore, crucial that manufacturers and governments take necessary measuresto ensure the privacy and security of user data.In conclusion, smart cars are a testament to the powerof technology in revolutionizing the future of transportation. By integrating advanced sensors, high-tech computer systems, and internet connectivity, these cars are making driving safer, more efficient, and more convenient. While there are concerns about privacy and security, the potential benefits of smart cars far outweigh these concerns. As we move into the future, it is exciting to imagine the possibilities that smart cars will bring to our lives.**智能汽车:交通未来的革命**在当今世界,科技以前所未有的速度发展,汽车行业也不例外。

4 Approximately 40,000 people are killed each year in the United States in traffic accidents. The number of people that are killed or badly injured in car accidents is so vast that we don't even bother to mention them in the newspapers anymore. Fully half of these fatalities come from drunk drivers, and many others from carelessness. A smart car could eliminate most of these car accidents. It can sense if a driver is drunk via electronic sensors that can pick up alcohol vapor in the air, and refuse to start up the engine. The car could also alert the police and provide its precise location if it is stolen.

6 At the MIT Media Lab, a prototype is already being built which will determine how sleepy you are as you drive, which is especially important for long-distance truck drivers. The monotonous, almost hypnotic process of staring at the center divider for long hours is a grossly underestimated, life-threatening hazard. To eliminate this, a tiny camera hidden in the dashboard can be trained on a driver's face and eyes. If the driver's eyelids close for a certain length of time and his or her driving becomes erratic, a computer in the dashboard could alert the driver.

Each satellite contains four "atomic clocks," which vibrate at a precise frequency, according to the laws of the quantum theory.
8 As a satellite passes overhead, it sends out a radio signal that can be detected bya receiver in a car's computer. The car's computer can then calculate how far the satellite is by measuring how long it took for the signal to arrive. Since the speed of light is well known, any delay in receiving the satellite's signal can be converted intoa distance.
