When the COVID-19 hit and supermarket shelves were empty, Chris Hall and Stefanny Lowey decided they no longer wanted to rely on others for food. The couple, who live on Pender Island in BritishColumbia, Canada, decided to start a year-long challenge where they wouldn't buy a single thing to eat. Instead they would grow, raise or catch everything—right down to sugar, salt and flour. Now, five months in, they say the challenge has changed their lives.
Chris, 38, said, “It has always been something that we have wanted to do. We have had a garden and grown vegetables for a long time already. When the COVID-19 hit, it gave us that extra push that we needed to do it. We were both out of work when we started, and with the reality check of grocery stores running out of items, it gave us even more motivation to see if we could look after ourselves.”
The pair spent the months before building a house for chickens, ducks and turkey as well as studying as much as possible to figure out where they would get all the things they needed. Chris adds, “We had to learn so many
new things like how to grow mushrooms, process our Stevia plants, and harvest salt from the ocean. We spent a lot of time reading and studying online to figure out all the things we were going to need to do.”
Now after five months, they both feel its been going well but Chris admits the first few weeks were difficult. “The first three weeks were very challenging as our bodies adjusted to cutting out coffee, wine and sugar all on the same day,” he says. “After three weeks our energy levels balanced out and our wishes reduced and now we feel great.” Now February has ended. As they come through winter, they feel positive about continuing with this way of living, with their challenge officially ending in August.

Most kids can walk into a library or bookstore and find hundreds of books to read. But it’s not that simple for kids who are blind. They read in a different way. Jenny Lee and other braille (盲文) transcribers take the printed words of a book and change them into a code of raised dots. Blind people can read these dots with their fingers. To know what braille feels like, take a ballpoint pen and press hard onto a piece of paper. Now turn the paper over and touch the raised dot made by the pen point.
When Lee first saw the dots of the braille alphabet, she wondered if she’d ever be able to read and write
them easily. She took a class and practised hard for about six months before she passed the final exam: she had to convert 35 pages of a book into braille. Today, Lee works for a publisher. One of her jobs is to change children’s books into braille.
To do this, Lee first types the story into a computer and then uses a computer program to translate it into the braille code. Next, she looks over the translation several times to make sure it’s mistake-free. After that, a copy of the braille story is printed with a special printer. Then Lee and a proofreader work together to find and correct any mistakes. When a book is ready, many copies of it are printed. Afterwards, some are sold through websites and others are sent to libraries.
Sometimes, going over a story again and again gets tiring. That’s when Lee takes a break. Several of Jenny Lee’s co-workers, who are blind, use guide dogs. When the animals aren’t working, Lee likes spending a few minutes with them. To her, playing with dogs “is always apick-me-upin the middle of the day”.
“I love this mission,” Lee says. “Through my brain power and my fingers, I am putting the dots into some kid’s hands.”
8. How does the writer explain what braille feels like?
A. By explaining what braille words look like.
B. By describing how blind people read books.
C. By asking readers to experience it themselves.
D. By giving examples of different braille words.
9. What was Lee’s first reaction to braille?
A. She was excited to get a new skill.
B. She was amazed at the clever idea.
C. She realized she could teach it herself.
D. She believed it would be difficult to learn.
10. What does the underlined word “pick-me-up” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A A discussion to release work stress.
B. Something to improve one’s appetite.
C. Something to help restore one’s spirit.
D. A free ride accompanied with a guide dog.
11. What does Lee think of her job?
A. Profitable and hopeful.
B. Tiring but meaningful.
C. Relaxing and helpful.
D. Boring but challenging.

The idea came to him when he least expected it. Alvin Irby was at a barbershop when he saw one of his former students sitting in the shop with a bored look on his face. That’s when Irby realized that by pairing barbershops and books, he might be able to inspire young boys to read.
Alvin Irby, a former kindergarten and first-grade teacher, knows how important it is for young children to read. He also knows that young boys in particular often don’t have adult male role models who inspire them to read. “Many young boys may literally never see a man reading in school during the years when they’re learning to read because there are so few male elementary school teachers,” Irby toldMashable.
That’s where the barbershops come in. Four years ago, Irby launched Barbershop Books as a way to not just get books into the hands of young boys, but also to create community reading spaces in a place where kids go frequently. Since itsinceptionin 2013, the program has created kid-friendly reading spaces in 50 barbershops in 12 states throughout the United States.
Irby isn’t the first person to see the connection between barbershops and books and boys. Hair stylist Courtney Holmes, launched a program a few years ago offering free haircuts to kids as long as they read to him while he cuts their hair.
That’s the kind of environment that Irby wants to promote with his program. The reading spaces created by Barbershop Books help to spark an interest in books by showing kids that reading is about more than just spelling and vocabulary skills, it’s about making reading a low-stress activity that can help them relax, laugh and have fun.
“Our belief is that if we can create positive reading experiences early and often for young boys, then they will choose to read for fun,” Irby noted, adding, “This is really what Barbershop Books is about, getting young boys to say three words: I’m a reader.”
12. What happened to Alvin when he was at a barbershop?
A. He found it easy for young people to get bored.
B. He offered a barbershop to his former student.
C. He thought of a way to encourage young readers.
D. He realized the importance of reading for young boys.
13. What is the function of Barbershop Books?
A. To attract more customers who love films.
B. To provide free haircuts to book lovers.
C. To show the influence of reading on children.
D. To create a reading environment fbr children.
14. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. reading is a low-stress activity that is relaxing
B. Barbershop Books is only suitable for young boys
C. Irby attaches great importance to school education
D. Barbershop Books can arouse (引起) young people’s interest in reading
15. What does the underlined word “inception” in the 3rdparagraph mean?

选项中有两项为多余选项“I wonder by my troth, what thou and I did, till we loved?” those are the first words of a poem by John Donne that I learned at school and I still know the whole thing today. It’s just one of many poems I've stored in my memory, ready to recite andrelish whenever I please.
It seems that poetry learning has gone out of fashion, but I'm still a fan because it doesn't just breed a lifelong love of poetry.___16___So why not dig out a poem you love and use it to exercise and enrich your recall?
Step 1. Know that poems are designed to stick in your mind.___17___See how they leave you with memory-arousing images and how they surprise you by breaking the rules, and control your senses and emotions. These are all great ways to make information more memorable.
Step 2.___18___ When you're learning a poem, try linking the last word of one line to the first word of the next. In my John Donne poem, one line ends with “see”, and the next starts with “which”, so I pictured a “sea witch”. Making links like these can also help with learning names, and many other kinds of information.
Step 3. Put in a performance. When you're practising a poem, read it aloud, as dramatically and emotionally as you can.____19____
Step 4. Enjoy yourself. Learning poems gives your memory a workout, which improves your mood and gets you into good learning habits. So reap the rewards! Have fun putting rhymes into your shopping list, using rhythm to learn names, or “performing” revision notes before an exam.
___20___And, in the process, you'll be making your memory stronger for everything.
A.Learn through links since memory relies on connections.

E.Follow these steps to appreciate poems and enjoy them wherever you are.

First, do not just visit them during holidays or at weekends. Second, it is suggested that we must take them to travel, making them relaxed. 52.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成地篇完整的短文。

Pinty Tailor was a little boy who enjoyed going to school and doing all sorts of things, except for drawing. Using brushes and pencils didn't come easy to Pinty, so his works of drawing didn't end happily, and he'd just give up.
But one day Pinty found a pencil of such lovely color1 s that he couldn't resist, and he tried drawing a circle. As ever, it didn't go well, and he was about to throw the pencil away when his drawing began to speak to him.
“Psst! You aren't going to leave me like this, are you? Come on! The least you can do is draw me a pair of eyes!” said the drawing. Pinty was understandably shocked, but he managed to draw two little spots inside the circle.
“Much better, now I can see myself, " said the circle, looking around at itself. “Arghh! But what have you done
to me?!”
“I don't draw very well,” said Pinty, trying to make excuses.
“OK, no problem,” the drawing interrupted him. “I'm sure that if you try again you'll do better. Go on and rub me out!” So Pinty erased the circle and drew another one. Like the first one, it wasn’t very round.
“Hey! You forgot the eyes again! Hmm, I think I'm going to have to teach you how to draw until you can do me well,” said the circle with its quick little voice.
To Pinty, this didn't seem like a bad idea, and he immediately found himself drawing and erasing circles. The circle wouldn't stop saying “rub this out, but carefully; it hurts,” or “draw me some hair. quickly!” and other funny remarks.
After spending nearly the whole afternoon together, Pinty could already draw the little figure much better than most of his classmates could have. He was enjoying it so much that he didn't want to stop drawing with his crazy new teacher. Before going to bed that night, Pinty gave his new instructor a hearty thank you.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
