模块综合测评(一)
(时间:100分钟;满分120分)
Ⅰ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
When I first moved to the US,it was very hard for me to understand a friendly chat or conversation. There were a lot of words that were quite unfamiliar to me.They were just common words, but the only difference was the actual meaning and their usage. We are used to different sets of words in other parts of the world due to British English influence.Though this has been changing a lot in recent times,I would like to share with you some of the common words used here and what I felt were different. It took me a while to catch up very basic words that Americans use in daytoday conversations and I am still learning new words every day!
Usually in India,we say,“Can I get my stuff in a plastic cover?” Here in the US,people say,“Can I get a bag for the stuff?”
We are used to saying I am a nonvegetarian, but in the US,people might get lost. You have to say,“I eat meat or chicken.” When you go to a restaurant,if you are a vegetarian, you should say,“NO Meat or Chicke n”; otherwise, you may find interesting stuff as a vegetarian in your food.
Americans consider association football (英式足球) to be a kids' sport.People say soccer when they refer to actual football. In Europe and other parts of the world we call football, but here in the US they say it soccer.
Typically in the restaurant after you are done with a meal, you ask for a check not a bill in the US from the waiter. No one uses “lift” here; it is “elevator”.Any shop is called store. We often get confused when Americans us e “bike”.It means “bicycle”.If you want to take a bath, people say,“I need to take a shower.”
1.Which of the following groups of words is most likely to be said by an American?
A.Waiter,get my stuff in a plastic cover,please.
B.Is there anything wrong with the lift?
C.Would you like to watch the soccer match this afternoon?
D.It is so great to go traveling across the country on a bicycle!
【解析】细节理解题。

根据第四段中的“In Europe and other parts of the world we call football, but here in the US they say it soccer.”可知C项正确,其余三项均可在文中找到错误的依据。

【答案】 C
2.When you go to a restaurant in the US,which of the following sentences will be used?
A.If you don't eat meat,you will say “I am a vegetarian.”
B.If y ou are a nonvegetarian, you will say “I eat meat or chicken.”
C.If you are done with a meal, you will say “Could I have the bill, please?”
D.If you want interesting stuff as a vegetarian in your food, you will say “No Meat or Chicken.”

根据第一段的“We are used to different sets of words in other parts of the world due to British English influence.”以及第二段中的“Usually in India,we say...”可以推断出印度人说的英语主要是受英式英语的影响。

【答案】 B

Sometimes people add to what they say even when they don't talk.Gestures are the “silent language” of every culture. We point a finger or move another part of
the body to show what we want to say.It is important to know the body language of every country or we may be misunderstood.
In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm.If the handshake is weak,it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness.Friends may place a hand on the other's arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug.
Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away and at an angle,so they are not facing each other directly.Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say,“Pardon me.” or “Excuse me.”
Americans like to look at the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don't do so,it means you are bored, hiding something,or are not interested. But when you stare at someone,it is not polite.
For Americans, thumbsup means yes, very good,or well done.Thumbsdown means the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are singing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger(食指).Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them.
Learning a culture's body language is sometimes confusing. If you don't know what to do,the safest thing to do is to smile.

In the future your automobile will run on water instead of gas! You will be able to buy a supercomputer that fits in your pocket! You might even drive a flying car!
Not all past predictions(预言) have been proven wrong.A few of them have been surprisingly accurate. Some great thinkers predicted the arrival of the credit card, the fax machine and even the Internet—years before they happened. But for each prediction that has come true, some others have missed by a mile. Many of these predictions didn't consider how people would want to use the technology or whether pe ople really needed these hightech (高科技的) things in their lives or not.Let's look at some predictions from the nottoodistant past.
Robot helpers
Where's the robot in my kitchen? Nowhere,of course. And he's probably not coming anytime soon.Robots do exist today, but mostly in factories and other working
environments.
Back in the 1950s,however,people said that by now personal robots would be in most people's homes.
So why hasn't it happened? Maybe because robots are still too expensive and clumsy(笨拙的).And probably the idea of robots cooking our dinners and washing our clothes is just too strange. At home we seem to be doing fine without them.
Telephones of tomorrow
In 1964 an American company introduced the video telephone. They said by the year 2000 most people would have a video phone in their homes. But of course the idea hasn't caught on yet.
Why? The technology worked fine, but it overlooked something obvious:people desire for privacy.Would you want to have a video phone conversation with someone after you just stepped out of the shower? Probably not—it could be uncomfortable! Just because technology doesn't always mean people will want to use it.
And finally, how about that crazy prediction of the flying car? It's not so crazy any more! But a flying car remains one of the most wonderful technology ideas to catch our imagination.Keep watching the news—or perhaps the sky outside your window—to see what the future will bring.

Companies like Google and are famous for their “work hard and play hard” attitudes and friendly work environments, but are their employees healthier too? According to a Tel Aviv University researcher,a positive relationship with your coworkers has longterm health benefits (益处).Dr Sharon Toker says that employees who believe that they have the personal support of their coworkers are more likely to live a lo nger life.“We spend most of our waking hours on work, and we don't have much time to meet our friends during the weekdays,” explains Dr Toker.“The workplace should be where people can get necessary emotional support.”
Dr Toker and her colleagues Prof.Arie Shirom and Yasmin Alkaly, along with Orit Jacobson and Ran Balicer from Clalit Healthcare Services, followed the health records of 820 adults who worked an average of 8.8 hours a day through a twodecade period. Those who had reported having low social support at work were 2.4 times more likely to die sometime within those 20 years, says Dr Toker.
820 study participants were drawn from adults aged 25 to 65 who came into their local HMO office for a regular checkup.Researchers controlled various psychological, behavioral or physiological risk causes, such as smoking, fatness and unhappiness, and gave a questionnaire to participants, who were drawn from a
wide variety of professional fields.
Researchers asked about employees' relationships with their managers, and also judged the participants'evaluation (评价)of their coworkers' relationships at work, and whether their coworkers were friendly and approachable, which was a reflection (反映) of emotional and professional support.“During the course of the study,” says Dr Toker,“53 participants died, most of whom had small social connections with their coworkers.”A lack of emotional support at work led to a 140% increased risk of dying in the next twenty years compared to those who reported supportive coworkers, she concluded.

Yours sincerely,
